#SongoftheDay There's a Star for Everyone (Aretha Franklin)

Image
My partner and I cycled down to the lake to watch the Perseids meteor shower earlier this week. We brought a blanket and got down on the ground to stare up at the sky. We only saw two meteors this year, but they were spectacular, so I'm happy with that. A couple years ago, we were visiting friends at their cottage during the Perseids. Being far from any town or city, we saw tons of shooting stars. But the most I ever saw was camping with my mother and sister in a dark sky preserve. We went on a guided night hike and the sky was just constant streaks of starlight. We counted well over 100, but there were kind of too many to count. We were spoiled for stars. #SongoftheDay Faith in the Power of Love (Rozalla)

Okay, last track from Cool as Ice. There are obviously more songs in the movie, but most of them are by Vanilla Ice. This outfit reminds me of the Friends episode where Ross gets stuck in his leather pants. Menopause really gets you thinking: how much am I going to sweat if I wear this? heh If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay I Can't Get Next To You (Al Green)

I woke up with this song in my head. Sort of. When I opened my eyes, I saw my partner in bed beside me, but there was a thick wall of duvet between us. That's why this song popped into my mind. I was beside my partner, but I couldn't get next to him. Because of the duvet. #SongoftheDay I Got You (James Brown)

Image
I haven't been taking my new prescription long enough to know whether it'll turn out to be the best option for managing my chronic illness, but you know what it's doing a miraculous job of managing? My mood! I'd been taking a different medication, previously, that took my depression and dragged it down deeper than it had been in ages. I woke up every morning thinking dark thoughts, seeing no point in living, and not wanting to get out of bed. The second day on these new meds, I woke up with this tune screaming through my mind, and I couldn't remember the last time I'd felt so happy.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Miss You Like Crazy (Natalie Cole)

Image
Although we have separate residences, my partner and I spend most of our time together--either both of us at his house or both of us at my apartment. It's increasingly rare that we spend time away from one another, and when we do, I am astounded by how much I miss him. Right away!  The reason this amazes me is that I lived alone for 20 years.  I used to be used to being alone. Now I'm not. And I get so instantly lonely that I worry I don't have the emotional resilience (or whatever) to take care of myself. Emotionally. And resiliently. Or something. Was I stronger on my own? I mean... no. I was never not depressed throughout those two decades of living by myself. My mental health was significantly worse back then. I don't love being lonely when my partner's not around, and I'm not saying I'm a mentally healthy person (I'm definitely not), but... But what? I don't know. I don't think I know what kind of point I'm trying to make. I just miss my...

#SongoftheDay My Toot Toot (Rockin' Sidney)

Image
As I mentioned earlier this week, I recently heard this song for the first time in my life and became instantly obsessed with it. All I want to do, all day long, is listen to it. While Denise LaSalle's cover remains my favourite version, I figured I would play you the original. This is it. I actually got the title wrong when I posted LaSalle's cover, but I blame YouTube for that. Anyway, her version should be titled "My Tutu." From what I've read online, this version can be referred to as My Toot Toot or Don't Mess With My Toot Toot. After listening to this tune sixty million times, I finally tried to figure out what it meant. What's a toot toot? I figured it had to be something dirty, because so many people on the internet remember being scolded, as children, for singing this song. Turns out "toot toot" comes from the French "toute-toute" which is a term I'd never heard, even as a pretty fluent French speaker. The word "to...

#SongoftheDay I Haven't Got Time to Cry (Irma Thomas)

Image
Over the past few years, I've narrated audiobook versions of more than a dozen of my books and probably hundreds of short stories. Then chronic illness started taking over my life and stealing away my ability to do the simplest things. Not that voice acting is simple. It isn't. It actually requires a ton of physical energy, which I no longer have. The last book I recorded was my novella Cherry. That took me more than six months to record. It was incredibly challenging. Recording in the makeshift studio in my one-bedroom apartment was always tricky, but now I'm coming up against the limitations of my own body, and that makes me feel helpless and hopeless. I didn't record anything for a while. And then I decided I wanted to put my own voice behind the audio version of my little book Brand New Sexy Surprises . Six short stories. I figured I could handle that. So I put together the studio I had disassembled when my partner was undergoing cancer treatment and we were spendin...

#SongoftheDay He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother (The Hollies)

Image
I know this is a terrible thing to say, but I think my brother-in-law might be the most boring person in the world. Every time he talks, I feel my soul leaving my body. I keep wondering why nobody shuts him up, but I guess I don't shut him up either, so who am I to talk? As I mentioned yesterday, we had a little Christmas gathering with my partner's family. It was just a few of us: my partner and I, his sister, his brother, and his brother's wife. I am the new recruit. I haven't been around this family long enough to have a proper place in it. I love my partner's sister. I like his sister-in-law. But his brother, oh man, every time he starts into another one of his diatribes about fixing a billing error that was off by fewer than five cents, I wish someone would hit him over the head with something heavy.  He doesn't do anything, so he's got nothing to talk about, but he talks about nothing non-stop. I feel myself reverting to childhood, wanting to yank on...

#SongoftheDay Got To Be Real (Cheryl Lynn)

Image
Yesterday I took out the recycling, and I was so proud of myself that my body was literally vibrating. In fact, I didn't just take out one load of recycling. I took out two. That means I left my apartment TWICE. And, after three days of not leaving my apartment at all, taking the recycling all the way out to the dumpsters in the parking lot behind my building was a hugely big accomplishment. My partner is visiting his sister, and when we're not together, I find it particularly difficult to leave my apartment. The longer I go without leaving the apartment, the harder it becomes to leave the apartment.  When I lived alone, it was not uncommon for a week to go by before I managed to force myself out. Back then, I did volunteer work once a week, so I had to go out at a certain time. Other people were relying on me. It was still difficult to negotiate with my anxiety, but I could do it because I'd made a promise and because the volunteer work changed people's lives. The...

#SongoftheDay Amazing Grace (Jessye Norman)

Image
I was taking out the recycling at my apartment the other night. I take the stairs whenever I'm able to, which leads me through the first floor of my building and past a bunch of different suites.  The one in the corner was blaring Amazing Grace. Not this version. I've never been fond of this tune (for trauma-related reasons--I won't get into it), but hearing it played as loudly as it was being played made me very, very glad that my apartment doesn't touch that person's apartment. One my way back up, after dumping my recycling, the volume from that unit was equally loud, but this time it wasn't Amazing Grace. This time it was a life insurance commercial. And this time it made me very glad I don't live in an old age home (yet...) because loud TV sort of goes with the territory, there. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them ou...

#SongoftheDay I Will Follow Him (Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act)

Image
My partner got up from the couch and said he was going upstairs. He asked if he should turn off the TV and I said sure, because I would be following him upstairs. Naturally, I sang this song at him as I followed. When we arrived upstairs, he turned to me and said, "My mother once heard that song and warned me that if anyone ever said those words to me, I should run." I was like haha, too late, you're stuck with me now. Additionally, I recall seeing Sister Act in a theatre in Florida. Not a very vibrant memory (a multiplex in Florida is much like a multiplex anywhere else), but there you have it. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Girl on Fire (Alicia Keys)

Image
There are so many things the doctors warned us about, but we didn't understand until we did understand. Radiation burns. We were warned this would happen. My partner's oncologist told us to treat his skin as though it were badly sunburnt right from the beginning. Even before it got red, we were treating it with lotion three times a day. Well, the thrice-daily treatments are a little more intensive now. One of the nurses at the hospital taught me how to treat my partner's burns. Another nurse informed us that, at this stage, he probably has second- or third-degree burns, and they will get worse over time.  Before my partner started radiation, I didn't really know much about it. You hear about chemo more than you hear about radiation. I was surprised when I learned that your hair all falls out at the radiation site. I was even more surprised when I watched it happen--all in one day, pretty much. His hair fell out in my hands as I was treating his skin. Radiation is no jok...

#SongoftheDay Don't Leave Me This Way (Thelma Houston)

Image
Yesterday I told you about the Dwayne Gretzky concert I saw at the CNE last Friday. Earlier in the afternoon, my mother and I happened to be walking by the bandshell while Dwayne Gretzky was performing their soundcheck. Well, this was one of the songs they went through. They performed it again in concert. The whole time, I was wondering, "What is this song?" Usually I recognize the songs they cover, but I don't remember ever hearing this one before yesterday. Not sure how I missed it.  I spent way too long asking Google what the song could possibly be, trying to describe the sound without remembering a single lyric. Google didn't come close to finding me an answer. ChatGPT got it right away. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also...

#SongoftheDay Higher Love (Dwayne Gretzky)

Image
There's an annual fair in Toronto called the CNE, also known as the Ex, also known as the Canadian National Exhibition. Before the pandemic, I went to that fair every year for 40 years straight. The pandemic broke my record, because the CNE didn't run for... two years? And then last year I didn't go because I was out of town. This year, I really really really wanted to return. I worried I wouldn't get the opportunity because cancer care has completely taken over my ife. But my partner could see how important the CNE was to me, so he encouraged me to go with my family and have FUN. It turned out opening day of the CNE was the one day my whole family could make it, and it also turned out my favourite cover band, Dwayne Gretzky, was the opening act at the bandshell. My partner and I saw them in concert last year, and even he was singing along (he is not a singer).  Dwayne Gretzky puts on such a fun concert. If you ever get the opportunity to see them, treat yourself. You...

#SongoftheDay Searchin' (The Coasters)

Yesterday I mentioned I've been watching old episodes of Northern Exposure to escape into nostalgia. This song was featured in the same episode as yesterday's song. I never get tired of The Coasters. #SongoftheDay Ooh Child (The Five Stairsteps)

Image
Thanksgiving was last weekend, here in Canada. I happened to call my mother's house on Sunday afternoon and it happened that she was hosting all my siblings for a holiday meal. My family was observing Thanksgiving without me. They didn't invite me or even tell me about it beforehand. I don't think they ever would have if I hadn't caught them in the act. This summer, my mother let it slip that she'd invited all my siblings over to celebrate a belated Christmas. They didn't invite me, and they clearly weren't going to tell me about it after the fact. I only found out because my mother tripped over her own lies. My partner tried to console me by saying that my family obviously thinks of him as my new family, which is a nice thought... but there's got to be more to it. I just don't understand. Why is my family cutting me out of all their holiday gatherings? What did I do to deserve this? If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you ...

#SongoftheDay Caribbean Queen (Billy Ocean)

Image
This is one of those songs that transports me back to the 80s. I don't have any specific memories that go along with it, but the track brings up a very specific 80s feeling for me: dark in a good way, like the knowledge that there's so much to know about the world and I don't know it yet. When I was a kid, I used to get stomachaches thinking about the universe. Outer space. Planets and galaxies. My father had told me that space was infinite, and I tried to wrap my head around that idea, but I just couldn't do it. How could anything be so big that it has no limits? Where does it end if it never ends? Those are the sort of thoughts that go along with this song, for me.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from y...

#SongoftheDay Superstition (Stevie Wonder)

Image
I can't believe this has never been our song of the day. I love it. It's on my playlist of 70s music I listen to when I'm super-bummed. And I'm listening to it now, so I must be super-bummed. Help me, music! Hellllllllp! Or, dare I say... funk me? If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.
