#SongoftheDay Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers Theme Song (Jeff Pescetto)

Image
I had to stop myself from singing this theme song to my partner in bed the other night--not to serenade him, only because it was stuck in my head. I thought I might be able to remember all the words, but no. In preparing this post, I discovered that Tress MacNeille did the voices of Chip and Gadget on the show. Simpsons fans (and fans of animation, generally) will know the name. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay The Three Stooges Cartoon Intro

Image
Apparently my partner watched The Three Stooges growing up (as did I), so his sister bought him a box set of Three Stooges DVDs, which included the Three Stooges cartoon as well. He has no memory of the cartoon. I do, though I have no memory of when it was on TV. The classic Three Stooges episodes were broadcast Sunday afternoons when I was growing up, and my siblings would groan when I insisted on watching them. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Bottom of the Pool (Bobby's World)

Image
I have a very meaningful story that relates to this song. Hard to imagine, eh? But that's life. Sometimes you have meaningful stories about silly songs. When I was in middle school, I still watched cartoons. Heck, when I was in high school I still watched cartoons. But we're talking middle school, here, when my friends also watched cartoons because we all had younger siblings and because we just plain liked cartoons. We'd all seen this episode of Bobby's World recently when we went on a class trip to a museum. My friends and I started scream-singing this song as we walked around. We were fourteen and museums were boring and singing loudly was fun. The museum lady came over and gave us a stern lecture, basically telling us to shut the hell up. This was a serious place of learning.  Our teacher, who'd been walking alongside us, rolled her eyes at the museum lady. Our teacher rolled her eyes! At a museum lady! Who was getting us in trouble! You know how sometim...

#SongoftheDay Inspector Gadget Theme

Image
My partner and I were just doing a crossword puzzle where one of the answers was "gadget" and my partner instantly said, "Inspector Gadget! My kids loved that show."  I loved that show too, though I remember almost nothing about it except that the Get Smart guy did the inspector's voice, and he had a niece named Penny. I thought Penny was a cool name, when I was a kid. I never met a Penny until I was in high school and a friend's mother went by Penny--short for Penelope. My friend laughed that once a telemarketer called and obviously wasn't familiar with the name Penelope, because he asked for "Pen-elope." Like you're going to elope with a pen.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Christmas Comes But Once a Year (1936 Cartoon)

Image
One time when I visited my mother, she had a small bag of Christmas decorations sitting by the door. When I asked why, she said she was getting rid of them. This blew my mind, because my mother is a hoarder. She hardly ever gets rid of anything. I looked through the decorations, and they all looked to be from the 1950s. They were children's ornaments, I'd say: clowns and cartoony animals, Humpty Dumpty, various characters. I remember hanging these on the Christmas tree when I was a child, but they must have belonged to one of my parents. Probably my father--his mother loved Christmas. She way overbought for us grandkids, and would sometimes tell us that her family was too poor for Christmas presents, when she was growing up. When she came here from Wales in the 1930s, her family lived in a homeless shelter for a while. The only gifts she and her siblings received throughout her childhood came from a charity run by the local newspaper. My grandparents were both factory wor...

#SongoftheDay Walking in the Air (Peter Auty)

Image
This song came on the radio the other evening while my partner and I were eating dinner. A wave of nostalgia washed over me, because I remember watching the film from which it came (The Snowman) when I was a child.  My partner had never heard of it, much less seen it.  I told him that this song gave me all the same feels I got from The Last Unicorn . Turns out both those animated films came out in the same year: 1982.  A good year for nostalgia, if you're me. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Born to be Cheap (Divine)

Image
I needed new pyjamas, so, naturally, I went to the supermarket. They sell clothes for cheap. I am nothing if not cheap. Whenever people buy me pyjamas (and by "people" I mean my mother, because she is the only person who buys me pyjamas), they buy me flannel pyjamas. As a permimenopausal person, let me tell you, flannel does not work. Even when I sleep naked, I wake up drenched in sweat. So I needed to find something I could sleep in that wasn't hot, and what I found (at the supermarket) were these adorable soft fluttery little shorts. And they were made of a printed fabric. And that print was of sea flora, tridents, and purple Ursula heads.  Ursula, from The Little Mermaid. Since I loved Disney villains as a kid AND they were on the clearance rack, I bought them and paired them with a tank top I got for $3. The reason we're listening to Divine is that, in case you weren't aware, the character of Ursula in The Little Mermaid was modelled on Divine. Now I...

#SongoftheDay Istanbul Not Constantinople (They Might Be Giants)

Image
My partner was just telling me a friend of his wanted to go to Istanbul, then he opened the newspaper and there was a full-page advertisement: Visit Istanbul! So obviously I started singing this song. I mean, how could a person NOT sing this song? The first time I remember hearing it was on Tiny Toons, which I flippin' LOVED, despite possibly being a little old for it...? I mean, are you ever really too old for cartoons? Really? My excuse for watching children's cartoons well into my teens (okay, and into adulthood...) is that I wanted to be an animator for a good part of my childhood. I've probably mentioned this before, but I loved drawing, I loved animation, and I wanted to make a career out of it. I changed gears a bunch of times before beginning my career as a writer in 2006, but I never came anywhere close to becoming an animator. A friend of mine did, though. I'll share one of his animations with you tomorrow. If you're wondering how you can support me...

#SongoftheDay My Pet Monster Theme Song

Image
I could have sworn this was already a song of the day, but my research shows it was not. I don't think it's relevant to anything; the song just popped into my head a couple minutes ago. I was about to call my partner "my pet monster," but I didn't think he'd get the reference, and I figured he'd probably find it insulting, being called a monster. Or my pet. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (Rousseau)

Image
I will always associate this piece with the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, which was one of my favourite movies of the 80s. It came out at the absolute perfect time, for me. I'm sure I've mentioned in the past that I wanted to be an animator when I was young. Part of that was because I loved drawing, and part of that was because I loved cartoons. Have I told you this story before? I can't remember. I've talked about it on Twitter, but I can't recall if I ever mentioned it here on the blog: when I was a kid, there was a lot of domestic violence in my household. I had a Smurfs blanket on my bed, and at night I would hide underneath it and pretend I was in Cartoon World, where I could play with the characters I loved from Saturday morning cartoons. When Roger Rabbit came out, it affirmed my escapist desires by presenting a world in which cartoons and humans coexisted. That's where I wanted to live. I haven't seen Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in... oh, 30 years, ...

#SongoftheDay Joy to the World (Three Dog Night)

Image
I want to tell you about a wild experience I had inside my own mind. If you remember Laurie Brown from CBC's The Signal, you might be aware that she has a podcast called Pondercast. I only just found out that she's been creating these incredible guided meditations. These things are seriously next-level. They really do it for me. Today I listened to an episode that was called Waiting, I think. Sorry to be so vague--I'm just trying to get this out fast so I don't lose it. In this episode, she mentions a quote about catching sight of yourself in a shop window and realizing that you have the option to either see your own reflection or see what's beyond. At the end of the meditation, I had this visual experience (in my mind) of trying to see what was on the other side of the glass. I could only seem to see myself, but I wanted to know what was going on inside. When I was finally able to see through that window, what I saw inside was really adorable. There were all ...

#SongoftheDay In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (Iron Butterfly)

Image
At the moment, I'm watching the Bart Sells His Soul episode of The Simpsons on DVD. This episodes opens with Bart tricking his church congregation into singing In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida as "In the Garden of Eden by I Ron Butterfly." I remember watching this episode when it was first broadcast and going into high school the next day to talk about it with my best guy friend. I remember him snobbily asking me, "You know that song is actually called In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, right?" and I was like, "Yeah, of course I knew that," but I don't think I did. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Let's Save Tony Orlando's House (Yo La Tengo)

Image
My partner visited his sister last week, so I camped out at his apartment.  He has cable. I had no idea you could still watch old episodes of The Simpsons in syndication, but that's what I've been doing. I watched the episode where Homer becomes a hippy. Haven't seen it in years. Decades? I always associate "Uptown Girl" with that one, but I noticed Yo La Tengo in the credits because they did the closing theme. They also did this.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Love Will Keep Us Together (Captain and Tennille)

Image
There is a Simpsons reference for every situation. This song came on the other day, and I struggled not to sing along with Homer's lyrics of "Some sweet-talking guy in a thong hands you a bong" etc.  I held back because my partner doesn't get my Simpsons references. He never watched the show. He's seen a few episodes at my house, because sometimes I have my DVDs on when he's around, but that's not the same as having seen every episode from the first nine seasons... oh, I don't know... a hundred times?  Probably more than that.   When The Simpsons was on in syndication (and I mean WIDE syndication), I'm sure I watched at least four episodes a day.  And that's a bare minimum. I thought I stopped watching The Simpsons once the 90s were over, but the song I made reference to above is apparently from a 2005 episode.  So I guess I still watched here and there in the new millennium. I don't think I've seen a new episode in the past ten years,...

#SongoftheDay Do The Bartman (Bart Simpson)

Image
Yesterday I mentioned the album The Simpsons Sing the Blues . Well, this song was on that album.  I haven't seen the video since it first aired--I believe in 1990--but as soon as I rewatched it, I remembered that first viewing like it was yesterday.  I'm just going by memory, here, so I could be wrong (I often am), but I remember this music video airing just after an episode of The Simpsons. It might have been before, but I think it was after. The Simpsons aired on Thursday nights on Fox, back then, and I'm assuming this video and the song were meant to make a splash. I'm not sure they did.  The Simpsons were definitely huge, right out of the gate.  Everywhere you turned, there was merch and counterfeit merch. I remember there was a very popular T-shirt that had Bart on it and underneath it said: Underachiever and Proud Of It. My nerdy friend had a counterfeit sweatshirt that said: Overachiever and Proud Of It.  I don't know where his mother found it, but ...

#SongoftheDay Useless Information (Baron Vaughn)

Image
This is so weird: yesterday I was going to schedule the Duck Tales theme as an upcoming song of the day, but I didn't because I'd just scheduled the Animaniacs theme and I worried it would be too many cartoon themes in one week. Also yesterday, I was telling my partner how bad my memory sucks. I'm terrible at remembering important life events, but I have no trouble remembering song lyrics. At the time, I'm pretty sure the Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers theme was clanging around in my head.  When I stumbled upon this clip from Baron Vaughn's standup today, I was blown away by the confluence of what's been going on in my head and what he's saying in his act. This is wild. So, not exactly a song of the day. More a medley of early 90s cartoon themes.  I should be embarrassed to be so familiar with these tunes, considering I was not a small child in the 90s. But, as I've mentioned before, I wanted to be an animator when I was younger, so I watched a lot of car...

#SongoftheDay Animaniacs Theme Song

Image
I woke up in the middle of the night with this song in my head, but only the "pay or play contracts" part. I kept thinking, "What kid would know what that means?"  When I told my partner what had woken me up (ie. this song), he responded gravely by saying, "Oh, gee, I'm sorry to hear that." heh. There are worse things in the world. This show also reminds me of the episode of South Park where Cartman's in jail or something and there's a character who's like, "There are two kinds of kids: kids who like Animaniacs and kids who don't like Animaniacs." I don't even know which kind of kid I am.  Was Animaniacs the show that had that "Would you like to take a survey" bit?   Do you like beans?  Do you like George Wendt?  Would you watch a movie about George Wendt eating beans?   If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends ab...

#SongoftheDay Talkin' Softball (Terry Cashman)

Image
This parody song from The Simpsons popped into my head today while I was cutting my partner's hair.   The lighting isn't great in here (despite there being probably a thousand lightbulbs in the living room/dining room/kitchen area), so I wasn't sure if I was clipping off too much sideburns. If you're an Old School Simpsons fan, you know why that made me think of this old softball episode. I don't have whatever season it's from on DVD (I think I have seasons 5, 6, 7, 8?), so I probably haven't seen this episode in 20 years... but I remember it well. And, of course, this song brings to mind a joke from Frasier, because I obviously still live in the 90s (remember when 10-11pm was the Seinfeld/Frasier hour on Fox29?), and it's this: Frasier asks his dad to name a baseball player and Martin says, "Okay... Darryl Strawberry," and Frasier snaps, "No, a real one!" Haha.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and...

#SongoftheDay Let's All Go To The Lobby

Image
I asked my partner what he's most looking forward to in a post-Covid world. He said going to restaurants and going to the movies.  Not me. I love cooking and eating at home. I've actually patronized restaurants way more during the pandemic just because I want to support local businesses, and then I get to bring my food home and not eat it in a public space full of strangers. As for movies, I'm not very good at watching them. My attention span doesn't often allow me to pay attention to a storyline for 1.5 to 2 hours.  When my partner saw The Irishman at a theatre on my street, he didn't even invite me to come along. He knew there was no way in hell I could sit still for that long. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check th...

#SongoftheDay Turtle Power (Partners in Kryme)

Image
I recently cancelled my cable, so I'm waxing nostalgic about TV, these days.  When I was a kid, I loved Ninja Turtles. Raphael was my favourite. I liked the cartoon and I loved this movie. It surprised me when I pulled up the video and found that I could sing along to the first verse in its entirety. I remembered every word. It really is amazing how deeply music plants itself in your brain. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.
