#SongoftheDay Watching the Detectives (Elvis Costello)

Image
I'm lying on my bed as I write this post.  I woke up feeling ill, which is not unusual. I spend half my life barely able to crawl out of bed. My partner has four medical appointments today, but he insisted he doesn't need me there for any of them. He said he'd call if he needed anything.  We spent yesterday at the hospital, meeting with various oncology professionals. It was an exhausting day. So many waiting rooms. So much waiting.  And the day never ends when we get home. That's when I have to figure out what to make for dinner even though I just want to collapse in a heap. So I've been lying here for two hours, hoping for my own pain to subside, watching true crime shows on my laptop, and feeling guilty for not doing all the work I've got to do. And the laundry! The laundry has been building up for weeks, but my health and mobility have been so poor that I haven't had the strength to carry it down to the laundry room in my building. I wish somebody wo...

#SongoftheDay Teenage Dirtbag (Avenue 22)

Image
I could have sworn we'd listened to the Wheatus original on this site--that's why I pulled a cover this time--but it turns out Teenage Dirtbag has never been featured here.  Dreadful oversight on my part. I love this song. It's always struck me as lesbionic, which is why I was eager to grab a cover with a female vocalist. Reminds me of High School Confidential, in a lot of ways.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. #SongoftheDay White Wedding (Billy Idol)

Image
My Wedding Heat series was recently featured on the Radish Fiction app , drawing renewed interest in the stories.   If I'm remembering correctly, I started writing Wedding Heat in 2012, after attending a wedding at a fancy resort.  I didn't stay at the resort, of course.  I shared a motel room off-site with 4 other people. To be honest, I hate it when people have their wedding somewhere fancy and expect their much less affluent guests to pony up for expensive accommodations.   But I hate weddings, generally, so why did I even write this series? I wrote it because there are so many people at weddings (at least, there were before covid), and it's such a charged environment. Emotions run high.  Desperation abounds.  People fall into bed with all kinds of partners they might not normally attach themselves to. At least, that's what happens in my series. Thing is, the most recent story in the Wedding Heat series was published in 2014. Since then, there's ...

#SongoftheDay Stacy's Mom (Fountains of Wayne)

Image
This song is on the radio right now, and I can't believe it's never been a Song of the Day. Many years ago, I wrote a book called STACY'S DAD HAS GOT IT GOING ON, so I have a great deal of affection for this tune.  Also, I've decided I am now a MILF--not quite at the level of Stacy's Mom, but I do the best with what I've got.  My partner finds that term MILF offensive and doesn't understand how anyone could proudly adopt it, but my partner's never been perimenopausal, so... #SongoftheDay Once in a Lifetime (Talking Heads)

Image
I have featured this song in the past, but the version I put up was a cover by Kermit the Frog.  Let's have the original, shall we?   This song popped into my head the other week, when my partner and I visited a river to look for fish. Salmon, to be specific. This autumn, we have visited four stretches of river here in Toronto to watch the salmon run. You could almost call it a hobby. Anyway, I don't know whether it was "the rocks and stones" or the water itself, but our surroundings brought this song to mind. That's why we're listening to it today. This new single just appeared on my twitter timeline, and it's a sentiment I think many of us can get behind. Great video, too. #SongoftheDay Hash Pipe (Weezer)

Image
The other day my partner was listening to a choral version of Toto's Africa, so I told him the story of how Weezer covered Africa, and then Toto returned the favour by covering Hash Pipe. I played the cover for him and he said, "I don't know how it compares because I haven't heard the original." He'd never even heard of Weezer, so I played this version, too. He didn't really say anything, so I guess I haven't created a Weezer fan. Not that I expected to. #SongoftheDay Boys Wanna Be Her (Peaches)

Every time I watch a Peaches video, I feel exactly like the mom of the Goth girl on that one episode of South Park who is like, "Oh, honey, you're so creative!" #SongoftheDay How Soon Is Now? (The Smiths)

Image
I don't usually watch TV during the day (I often watch stuff on YouTube, but that feels different for some reason?), but lately I've had the television on all morning. Ever since the pandemic started, I've been getting a bunch of bonus channels (although I just opened my VISA bill to see that my cable provider also cranked up base charges, so I'm having a low-grade all-day panic attack at the moment because I NEED MONEY oh my god I need money) so, anyway, an old episode of Charmed just came on. I've never seen this show before. The theme song surprised me by being... well... good. It was this song. Which I really like. #SongoftheDay Violet (Hole)

Image
I'm currently reading the book Little Fish by Casey Plett , and it is phenomenal. It's one of those books that is clearly written for other trans women. It doesn't explain itself. It doesn't need to. If you get it, good. If you don't, oh well.  Books that "explain" trans-ness are so boring. I should know--I've written like 40 of them. heh. At one point, the main character (Wendy) is standing in the cold, waiting for a taxi, and listening to this song over and over. I must admit, I'm not a Hole aficionado, so I had to look it up. I'm glad I did. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Bathwater (No Doubt)

Image
I was obsessed with this song, when it came out 20 years ago. At the time, I was in love with a married man, we were deeply involved in an affair, and I was perfectly comfortable with the situation. I liked being "the other woman"--read all about it in my book AUDREY AND LAWRENCE . It's fiction, but it's pretty damn close to the truth. "Why do the good girls always want the bad boys?" It wasn't until I hit my midlife crisis that I was like, "Hey, you know what? I'm ready for a monogamous relationship!" Up to that point, I'd been happy with affairs and open relationships. In fact, up to that point, I'd never been able to picture myself in a monogamous relationship--and with a man, of all people! I have very positive feelings about open relationships (and I'm not even against affairs, even though I'd be pretty gutted if my partner cheated on me--but that's mostly because I believe in honesty above all and I'd fee...

#SongoftheDay What Do I Get? (Buzzcocks)

Image
When we listened to Patience and Prudence a couple weeks back, I mentioned that I'd first heard their song in the film Ghost World . Same goes for this one. My partner and I watched Ghost World on Friday. It's one of my favourite films. He wasn't so impressed. He found it "teen angsty, but also very sad." Which is not at all how I would characterize it. He didn't like Thora Birch's Enid character, because she's an asshole.  That's precisely why I do like her. She fucks up everybody's life, including her own, and then walks away. It's not like I want to emulate this character or anything. I just have great affection for her.  She struggles so hard against herself and hurts everyone around her in the process. If you've never seen this movie, I highly recommend it. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone...

#SongoftheDay I Don't Want To Grow Up (Ramones)

Image
This post is the first piece of work I've done in days. I don't even remember the last time I opened my computer.  I schedule these posts in advance, and luckily I did a big batch last week--lucky, because I've been too exhausted from hospital visits to even think about work. I'm coming apart at the seams. Caregiving is exhausting, especially when it's not in your nature. And this is caregiving someone in hospital, where she is already being cared for expertly by nursing staff. I know I shouldn't complain. I should feel grateful that I'm not the one in that hospital bed. I should feel grateful that my mother is receiving treatment for her cancer, unlike her neighbour who is deemed too old to treat. There are so many things I should feel grateful for... and I do... but I'm also tired right down to my bones. The other day, my partner went to my apartment to spend time with the cats. The plan was that I'd meet him there after spending time (6 hour...

#SongoftheDay drift+disconnect (rook&nomie)

Image
I've been listening to rook&nomie's album me&you on my way to the hospital and on my way home every day.  It's the album I'm hooked on right now, and it's helping me cope with my mother's illness like you would not believe. I saw Rook mention, on Twitter, that this is probably the last album they'll be making together. Now I sad, because their music really appeals to me. Soft and screamy, just how I like it. Head on over to  https://rookandnomie.bandcamp.com  and stream the holy hell out of  me&you .  Buy now ! #SongoftheDay A Message to You Rudy (The Specials)

Image
A couple days ago, The Specials tweeted that it was the 40th anniversary of their release of this song. I learned from Lana Gay on Indie88 , that The Specials' version is actually a cover. Who knew? Maybe you. Maybe not. Here is the 40-year-old version (heh): And the original, from 1967: If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Centre (Tanya Tagaq ft. Shad)

Image
I mentioned Tanya Tagaq a couple days ago, so here we are with a track from her Retribution album . I don't know how many times I've seen Tagaq live (I've lost count), but every time I'm like: Is this really happening? How are these sounds coming out of a human? Tagaq is the fiercest performer I have ever seen with my eyeballs. Her reclamation of Nanook of the North is beyond powerful. When you see her live, she is earthy, unworldly, otherworldly. She is everything. She's amazing. Plus, she and Shad go great together. Vinyl is available! #SongoftheDay HERTZ (Black Dresses)

Image
This song is from the new album LOVE AND AFFECTION FOR STUPID LITTLE BITCHES, which you should definitely buy right this second , or at least listen to it a bunch of time and then buy it . I mean, if you like your music loud and scream-y. Which I do, in case I haven't made that abundantly clear. And, possibly, I haven't. The other day I was complaining to my partner about how my mother has been calling me "loud" all my life--chastising me for it, even now that I'm like 40. My partner said, "That's so strange. I don't think of you as loud." Suggestively (or so I thought), I replied, "Well, I can be loud sometimes..." He clearly did not catch the suggestiveness of that statement, because he immediately said, "That's true--when you're angry." I meant in bed, but yeah, loud when angry, can't argue with that. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the e...

#SongoftheDay Some Kind of Cowgirl (Slothrust)

Image
I'm on Season 5 of "You're the Worst" (having non-stop sex dreams about Kether Donohue's stellar ass). This song plays over the end credits of the episode I just watched. The lyrics "I think bad things / I host bad thoughts" are the ones that really hooked me. I've been working hard at getting my bad thoughts under control, but it's not easy when you've been catastrophizing for nearly 40 years. I want a happy life. I hope I don't destroy this opportunity to build something lasting with my partner. There's a very good chance I will. But I'm trying to be hopeful. Maybe this is the one thing I won't destroy. #SongoftheDay Electric Pow Wow (A Tribe Called Red)

Image
Another funny story. This one's about my about my mother, of all people, calling me old. Last week, I finally got to see A Tribe Called Red LIVE. It was a phenomenal experience. I've been a fan of their sound for years, but it's only a SOUND until you get to a live show. Live, you get the vibe--I mean the actual vibration. You get the music inside you. I felt it in my heart, especially. Physically. Like, it grabs you in the heart and holds on. I brought my mom to this show. While I danced and screamed, she looked around at the crowd. Eventually she tapped me on the shoulder and shouted into my ear, "I thought this group appealed to people your age, but it's actually a lot of YOUNG PEOPLE here." I laughed so hard. I was like, "I thought I was a young person." My mom said, "No, these people are WAY younger than you." She had a point. I've got a decade or two on most of that crowd. You know you've reached "a certain ...
