This is one of those songs that transports me back to the 80s. I don't have any specific memories that go along with it, but the track brings up a very specific 80s feeling for me: dark in a good way, like the knowledge that there's so much to know about the world and I don't know it yet.

When I was a kid, I used to get stomachaches thinking about the universe. Outer space. Planets and galaxies. My father had told me that space was infinite, and I tried to wrap my head around that idea, but I just couldn't do it. How could anything be so big that it has no limits? Where does it end if it never ends?

Those are the sort of thoughts that go along with this song, for me.

If you're of my generation, you might know this tune as the theme song from Married With Children.  I'm sure I've mentioned in the past that I wasn't "allowed" to watch Married With Children. I remember it airing daily in syndication, maybe at 11 at night?  No, 11:30.  I know I shouldn't joke about having been neglected as a child, but you'll often catch me saying it was really easy to get away with watching shows I wasn't supposed to watch when there were no conscious/sober adults around. So I did watch Married With Children more often than I should have, even though I didn't like it. All good questions. Let me explain. My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day, starting June 1 2019, to share with you whichever song pops into my head. Why?  What's the point? Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. I'd completely forgotten this song existed until I heard an ice cream truck playing it the other day. Okay, so the ice cream truck wasn't actually playing this song. It was playing some other song that reminded me of this song, but close enough. I read an article about something called a Death Cafe, which is a hosted event for people who are close to death. They can attend to talk about death in an open way. A lot of people find it easier to talk to strangers about their own impending death, because talking to family or friends is so fraught with emotion.  I wonder if you've ever experienced this: you're in a relationship, or even a friendship, and you get interested in something the other person is into, and after a while you start asking yourself if you're genuinely interested in this thing, or if you only like it because they do. That's how I felt about Star Trek, when I was in a relationship with Sweet. Sweet was a hardcore Trekker (not Trekkie!). I watched various Star Treks at her house, while we were dating, because that's all that was ever on.  I watched TNG in the 90s because it was on every day in syndication and I thought Patrick Stewart was hot af.  It's two in the morning as I write this, and I'm watching old episodes of MST3k. I've spent hundreds (possibly thousands?) of hours of my life watching old episodes of MST3k. There was a time when I watched them all night long, until around 5 in the morning, when I would finally go to bed. I was extremely depressed, and they kept me alive. Alive, and laughing. A friend of mine makes films about her experience living with bipolar disorder. Last time I talked to her, she mentioned how hugely funny she finds things when she's inside a manic episode. When I've been at my most depressed, I've valued nothing higher than laughter. MST3k is where I found it most reliably. (I'm partial to the Joel episodes.)
