#SongoftheDay Crazy (Daisy Dee)

Image
I usually fall asleep listening to Rifftrax or old MST3k movies. For the past month, my cinematic masterpiece of choice has been Cool as Ice, a 1991 film starring Vanilla Ice. One day, when I was very sick, I listened to Cool as Ice at least 5 times in a row. I tried to actually watch it once (with my eyes, I mean), and the cinematography made me nauseuous. So I just listen. It's a weird obsession. VERY weird. So, this song is from the soundtrack. There's a lot of music in the movie, and it's not all bad. A lot of it piques my nostalgia. By the way... this video. It reminds me of those lip synch music videos people used to make at Canada's Wonderland. I can't decide whether I love it or... not. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help m...

SongoftheDay Mr. Belvedere Theme Song (Leon Redbone)

Image
It was never my intention to inundate you with theme songs from shows from the 80s, but here we have another.  My partner and I watched an episode of McDonald & Dodds called "Belvedere" and I, of course, asked him if he'd ever seen Mr. Belvedere.  He said no. Apparently he had better things to do in the 80s.  Well, I didn't. That's why I can still sing this theme song at you 40 years later.  Anyway, when we paused our show to get more snacks, my partner started describing Mr. Belvedere to me and I was like "You have seen it!"  He said no, he hadn't... but he'd seen the commercials... A likely story. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Muppet Babies Theme Song

Image
There have been lots of baby birds (okay, child birds) in the backyard lately. One of the bird babies is a grackle, for which I have an odd affection, and every time I see it, I sing "Grackle Baby" to the tune of this song. I'm pretty sure that's not annoying, but you'd have to ask my partner. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Jem And The Holograms Theme Song (Fillip Williams, Lara Eide and Johan Yngvesson)

Image
Until I heard this cover of the Jem And The Holograms theme song, I always thought the words were: We are The Misfits Our songs are bitter ...which made total sense to me. I guess it's true what they say: you never stop learning. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Found a Peanut (Lisa Loeb)

Image
I dropped a peanut on the floor and ate it anyway, and would you believe it was rotten? I think it tried to tell me so by jumping out of my mouth and onto the floor in the first place, but I didn't listen. The version of this song I learned, growing up, was "last night" instead of "just now" and "just now" feels so jarring, wow. #SongoftheDay Haut les mains (Ottawan) #disco #the80s #nostalgia

Image
Turns out this song has already been our song of the day, but you know what? That was five years ago and the video I posted back then has since been taken down, so we're revisiting the soundtrack of my childhood.  Boy, we loved this song when I was a kid. As I mentioned the last time we listened to it, "Haut les mains" was popular in both French and English (at least it was where I lived) and there were dance moves that went along with the tune.  We also used to sing it as:  Hands up! It's a stick-up! Give me all your money money, Don't be funny funny... #SongoftheDay Bottom of the Pool (Bobby's World)

Image
I have a very meaningful story that relates to this song. Hard to imagine, eh? But that's life. Sometimes you have meaningful stories about silly songs. When I was in middle school, I still watched cartoons. Heck, when I was in high school I still watched cartoons. But we're talking middle school, here, when my friends also watched cartoons because we all had younger siblings and because we just plain liked cartoons. We'd all seen this episode of Bobby's World recently when we went on a class trip to a museum. My friends and I started scream-singing this song as we walked around. We were fourteen and museums were boring and singing loudly was fun. The museum lady came over and gave us a stern lecture, basically telling us to shut the hell up. This was a serious place of learning.  Our teacher, who'd been walking alongside us, rolled her eyes at the museum lady. Our teacher rolled her eyes! At a museum lady! Who was getting us in trouble! You know how sometim...

#SongoftheDay Good Vibrations (Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch)

Image
Oh dear. I woke up with this song in my head and I couldn't remember who it was by. I was more than a little surprised when it turned out to be Marky Mark, because all I could remember was the "It's such a good vibration" part--which is sung by Loleatta Holloway. I looked that up. But that's the only good part of the song (am I making a controversial statement?) so I really wanted to know who was singing. Blows my mind to think that I now have a granddaughter, and that some day my granddaughter might hear this track from 1991 and think of it as Grandma Music. From the 1900s. Whoa. #SongoftheDay Super Mario Theme in the Styles of 6 Classical Composers (Nahre Sol)

Image
The last time I posted the Super Mario theme as our song of the day (last week, maybe?) hardly anybody looked at the post. Auto-tweet was broken at the time, so I'm blaming that and doubling down on the Mario Bros. Here they are again, this time in the guise of six different composers. Really cute video. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay A Bushel and a Peck (Sharon, Lois and Bram)

Image
Apparently this song is from Guys and Dolls. I've seen Guys and Dolls a number of times on stage, but I don't remember this song being in it. I do remember hearing Sharon, Lois and Bram sing it on their TV show when I was a kid. This is exactly the kind of song I want to share with my granddaughter. I can't remember if I told you that we've spontaneously burst into song a few times--my partner, my stepdaughter and I--to entertain our granddaughter. Technology is amazing. We can sing together even though we're on opposite sides of the planet. We'll have to sing this one. The trick is finding songs we know, all three of us, but it turns out there are many such songs. We even tried Row, Row, Row Your Boat in a round. My partner loves a round. Reminds him of camp. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library....

#SongoftheDay Putt Putt for the Fun of It (1980s Commercial)

Image
This ad used to play on the American TV channels we got when I was a kid. My cousin and I sang this jingle constantly, laughing our little heads off, because in my family the word "fart" was basically a swear word. We did not say it. We had to say "putt" instead. So to hear this TV commercial advocating farting for fun was just the most hilarious thing we could think of. Ah, to be six again... #SongoftheDay Nothing Better (The Postal Service)

Image
When I was in Grade 3 (that's how we say "Third Grade" in Canada), I joined the stamp club. I bet that sounds pretty nerdy, but either it was super-cool or else all my friends were nerds too, because we all joined the stamp club. It was held after school in a small, dark room, which sounds creepy, but it wasn't.  I can't remember the teacher's name who ran the stamp club, but every week he'd hold a draw for us members, and the winner got a set of stamps he was giving away. One week, I won Disney stamps. I forget which country they were from. I think I might have given them to Sweet, because she was a Disney fanatic, but I hope I didn't give them away.  As I so often mention, I'm getting nostalgic, and part of that nostalgia is wanting things from my childhood. Like those Disney stamps. My paternal grandmother gave me stamps when I was in the stamp club. She'd placed them in two sheets from a large photo album. I have no idea where she got them ...

#SongoftheDay Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly (Judy Collins on The Muppet Show)

Image
I've been recording nursery rhymes and children's songs for my granddaughter for over a year, but I haven't had the confidence to actually send them to her yet. Everything has to go through my stepdaughter, obviously, and I often feel bashful about all the silly things I create. I love singing, but then I worry that I'm Hyacinth Bucket-ing all over my stepfamily. Maybe I enjoy the sound of my own voice more than other people enjoy it. That's very, very possible. I just don't know. I haven't recorded this song yet, but I'd like to. I think I could do it justice. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside (Florrie Forde)

Image
I found out via social media that my fellow erotica author Victoria Blisse died this week. I'm not sure how many readers of my lil music blog here are also connoisseurs of fine smut, but anyone who's been around the erotic fiction community for some time has probably encountered Victoria, and knows what a kick-ass, lovely person she was.  Victoria Blisse used to organize an event called Smut by the Sea, and I'd ship Giselle merch over to her in England to give away, plus contributors' copies of erotic anthologies for her Erotic Tombola. That's how I learned what a Tombola was--we don't have them here in Canada. Along with Lucy Felthouse, Victoria was co-editor of a number of anthologies that featured my work (including one that was called Smut by the Sea, though I think it's off the market now). I had plenty of interaction with her back then, though not so much recently, and that makes me incredibly sad. She just kept growing into an even cooler person, and ...

#SongoftheDay Christopher Robin Is Saying His Prayers (Turner Layton)

Image
I learned this song when I sang in a choir, as a preteen, and I've loved it ever since. It reminds me of what my own little brain does any time I'm supposed to take something seriously, be solemn or grave, or even just concentrate really hard. My mind can always find a squirrel to chase. The other week, I learned that my sister-in-law loves Winnie the Pooh. My partner does, also, so I shouldn't have been surprised, but her whole apartment is decked out in Pooh. Before I met my partner's sister, I thought for sure she was going to hate me. She's a church lady, and there are more than a thousand things about me a stereotypical church lady would love to hate: I'm queer, I'm genderqueer, I write sex for a living, I've done a lot of sketchy shit in my life. That's just for starters. But it turns out my sister-in-law is not a stereotypical church lady. She has welcomed me into the family with open arms. She's never been judgemental. She's never bee...

#SongoftheDay Fraggle Rock Opening Theme

Image
An old friend of my partner's died recently. She worked on Fraggle Rock, though I'm not sure what her role was on the show.  We're listening to the Fraggle Rock theme song today as a tribute. Brings back memories. I loved this show when I was a kid. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Sweat A La La La La Long (Inner Circle)

Image
I woke up in a pool of sweat at three in the morning. This is not unusual, but last night's sweat far exceeded the amount of sweat I've sweated on previous occasions. The sheets felt wet beneath me. I could not go back to sleep on them. Fortunately, there is a spare bedroom at my partner's house. Unfortunately, I feel guilty when I use it. I feel bad for leaving him alone in bed. But I really had no choice last night. The sheets were gross. I had to go. After I'd spent the rest of the night in the cool, crisp, DRY sheets of the spare room, I heard my partner starting his day. I got up and apologized for abandoning him. He had no idea what I was talking about. He didn't realize I'd left the bed. Okay, so maybe next time I soak the sheets with sweat, I won't worry so much about heading into the spare room. By the way, it's wild writing to you about perimenopausal night sweats while listening to a song that came out when I was in my early teens. I...

#SongoftheDay Who's the Boss? Theme Song "Brand New Life" (Larry Weiss)

Image
I've just about finished re-watching every episode of Cheers. I only have 3 episodes left on the PVR. Not the finale, although that in itself is 3 episodes long. I don't usual watch sitcom finales, because they make me sad, but if I do, I don't watch them last. That way I can comfort myself with the knowledge that I've got more episodes to rewatch. I don't like endings. I don't like things to be over. Not sure which 80s sitcom to dive into next. My sister has already re-watched Who's the Boss? twice in its entirety in the past couple years, but I can't really get into family sitcoms. I didn't mind them when I was a kid, because at that time I was part of a family. After living alone for so many years, and now living just with my partner, I feel too distant from the nuclear family structure. I gravitate toward workplace sitcoms. I wonder if WKRP is streaming anywhere.  Anyway, the reason we're listening to this theme song today is that every...

#SongoftheDay Walking in the Air (Peter Auty)

Image
This song came on the radio the other evening while my partner and I were eating dinner. A wave of nostalgia washed over me, because I remember watching the film from which it came (The Snowman) when I was a child.  My partner had never heard of it, much less seen it.  I told him that this song gave me all the same feels I got from The Last Unicorn . Turns out both those animated films came out in the same year: 1982.  A good year for nostalgia, if you're me. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely.
