#SongoftheDay Nights on Broadway (Candi Staton)

Fell down a rabbit hole, landed on Broadway. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Just a Gigolo (Village People)

Image
My partner and I heard a big band perform this number the other day, and it reminded me of a friend I had in high school--not because he's a gigolo (I don't think he is, but we haven't kept in touch) but because this is the first song I ever heard him sing. He was very talented. He went on to become a professional actor, but I'm not sure what he's up to these days. I've been singing this song around the house, and when I actually think about the words, it occurs to me that this is one of those upbeat tunes that are really depressing when you stop and think about them. Lots of songs from the 50s are like that (not that this song is from the 50s--it was actually written in the 1920s, I believe, and popularized in the 50s).  Fortunately, I have the uncanny ability to sing lyrics without ever thinking about them. I can (and usually do) also listen to songs without processing the words. My partner thinks this is weird. I don't know if it is. We'll have to d...

#SongoftheDay How Deep Is Your Love? (Bee Gees)

Image
I found a copy of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in my partner's record collections, so I immediately played it. Touching vinyl really takes me back. It's something I haven't done since the 80s, possibly the 90s.   I've probably told this story before, but I specifically remember being in Buffalo NY when record stores were shutting down and pawing through endless stacks of clearance albums with my father.  Feels like forever ago. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Haut les mains (Ottawan) #disco #the80s #nostalgia

Image
Turns out this song has already been our song of the day, but you know what? That was five years ago and the video I posted back then has since been taken down, so we're revisiting the soundtrack of my childhood.  Boy, we loved this song when I was a kid. As I mentioned the last time we listened to it, "Haut les mains" was popular in both French and English (at least it was where I lived) and there were dance moves that went along with the tune.  We also used to sing it as:  Hands up! It's a stick-up! Give me all your money money, Don't be funny funny... #SongoftheDay Mama Can't Buy You Love (Elton John)

Image
This song was playing in the pharmacy when I was waiting to pick up some new prescriptions. Made me so happy, because I hadn't heard it in decades. I started singing along (sorry, fellow pharmacy waiting people) because a wave of nostalgia hit me so hard.  I don't have any specific memories attached to this song, but nostalgia always hits me harder when I haven't heard a song since I was a kid. Music gets planted so deep in my brain (I've read that music actually gets stored in various areas throughout the brain) that I still remember words to songs I haven't heard in ages. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Macho Man (Village People)

Image
We got on the elevator with my neighbour the other day, and when he got off I whispered to my partner, "That's our neighbour," and my partner whispered back, "Each of his arms is thicker than your waist!" Which probably isn't true, but yeah... he's got some serious muscles, that man. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Ladies Night (Kool and the Gang)

Image
You know what I would love to find? Information on menopause and menopause-related topics aimed at trans and nonbinary people. In case I haven't mentioned it lately, I am genderqueer or nonbinary or something (still haven't found a word that resonates with me, to be honest). When I want information about vaginal dryness and I get a YouTuber talking about "us ladies" and our "lady parts" I feel like I'm covered in slime (which would probably help, at this stage). This delivery is not for me.  I try to power through and ignore the "lady" stuff because menopause is terrible and I need information, but I find I just can't handle it. I need inclusive information. I need information that doesn't send me packing. Maybe there are resources out there for people like me and I just haven't found them yet.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most a...

#SongoftheDay Daddy Cool (Boney M)

Image
YouTube now seems to be working overtime to prove to me that music videos existed in the 70s.  Okay, I admit it: I was wrong when I said music videos were invented in the 80s. Clearly they existed in the disco era. This Boney M video was made in 1976, from what I gather. I'll give them this: they found a location they liked and they stuck with it. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Bad Girls (Donna Summer)

Image
Every time I come across a music video made in the 70s it blows my mind. Until I stumbled upon that Bee Gees one I played recently, I truly believed music videos were invented in the 80s. So I'm wrong again. This video for Donna Summer's Bad Girls track is just... I don't even know what to say about it. Community theatre on diet pills? I don't even know. It's wild. I was thinking about this song because I recently put out a book called Bad Girls Sexy Surprises . Are my girls really bad or are they just complicated? Who's to say. Many of my characters are based on me, and many of their experiences (ie. sleeping with married men) are things I certainly did when I was younger.  But " Bad Girls " makes for a tantalizing title, and I'm trying to pay the rent, here. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from you...

#SongoftheDay Rapper's Delight (The Sugarhill Gang)

Image
When we listened to Chic's "Good Times" yesterday, perhaps you started thinking about this track. Or maybe you're listening to Rapper's Delight today and thinking there's something familiar about the undercoating.  I learned the history of Rapper's Delight from a segment on Drunk History. My brain doesn't retain a lot of information these days, but I do recall that Chic sued (or threatened to sue?) The Sugarhill Gang over their use of the bass line from Good Times to underpin Rapper's Delight. Ultimately, they settled on sharing credit (or writing credit? My brain really does not work...) for this song. Before I saw that Drunk History segment, my partner and I were washing dishes and listening to the 70s at 7 on the radio. They played Rapper's Delight and I was like, "The station must have made a mistake. This song can't be from the 70s." But, sure enough, it is. 1979, to be exact. I guess the oldies station knows a thing or...

#SongoftheDay Good Times (CHIC)

I have never been the kind of person who enjoys exercising.  Earlier in my adulthood, exercise didn't seem so important--in part because I was younger, and in part because I worked a lot of jobs that were very physical. I also walked everywhere, and I walked often. I moved my body. I don't do that so much anymore, in part because physical activity can actually aggravate my chronic illness if I'm not careful. I have to be so, so attuned to what my body is capable of doing at any given moment.  Sometimes my body is capable of disco dancing.  I've mentioned before that there are workout videos on YouTube that are entirely disco-focused, and they might just be changing my life. I find them so stupidly fun that I'll do one after another. And the more active I am on days when I can be active, the fewer flare-ups I seem to have of my chronic illness. That's not a prescription. It might eve be wishful thinking. But disco gets me wishing for a brighter future.  If yo...

#SongoftheDay Stayin' Alive (Bee Gees)

Image
I have been seriously struggling with PTSD lately. Flashbacks are frequent, and they draw me completely out of this world--or, at least, out of this time zone.  Out of this time.  Out of now.  I want to be here , where it's safe and there's love, but instead I'm there and it feels so real. I don't even know I've left the here-and-now until I'm back, trying to shake off things I don't want to think about.  Last week, my partner and I walked to the convenience store to buy milk. On our way there, we heard an alarm sounding. We weren't sure whether it was a car alarm or if it was coming from the business across the street. It was hard to pinpoint.  On our way home, we could hear the alarm again. This time, we realized it was coming from a garbage bag at the end of someone's driveway. It was a smoke detector that wouldn't stop sounding. It was garbage day, so I said to my partner, "I guess that alarm will just keep going until it gets crushed...

#SongoftheDay Got To Give It Up (Marvin Gaye)

Image
I've been doing disco dancing workout videos on YouTube lately and this song plays during one of them. It was the only song in the bunch that I couldn't identify. I would try to listen for lyrics, but I couldn't make any of them out. I asked my partner if he knew the song, but he didn't. I tried to ask the robots that live with us, but they were not helpful. It was a days-long mystery. Finally, I listened to the workout video with headphones and was instantly able to pick out a line, which I plugged into Google. Google immediately knew those words were from this song. The mystery is solved.  I would never have guessed I was listening to Marvin Gaye. #SongoftheDay Lynda Carter's Rock 'n Roll Fantasy (Lynda Carter)

Image
You can blame/thank The Mary Jo Pehl Show for this one, because this condensed version of Lynda Carter's Rock 'n Roll Fantasy appeared in the preshow of last month's edition. I was going to play the full version for you (it is available on YouTube), but playback on external sites has been disabled. But this segment is possibly the most memorable. Possibly.  I'm truly very sorry for everything you're about to see. #SongoftheDay Every 1's A Winner (Hot Chocolate)

Image
Do you remember, when you were a kid, you'd say things like: "When I grow up, I'm gonna eat ice cream for breakfast!" Well, I absolutely grew up into a grown-up who ate... okay, not ice cream for breakfast, but certainly cakes and cookies and pastries. All kinds of sweet things. Not recently, though. As I've very boringly informed you, I very boringly eat oatmeal in the morning to keep from getting sick when I take my big batch of morning pills that cause nausea and stomach cramps. But it was my birthday the other day, and I thought, since it was my birthday, I would have two chocolate chip cookies at breakfast. Wow, was that ever a mistake. I felt instantly ill. I felt like I was going to puke. It wasn't until I ate my big bowl of oatmeal that I felt better. So my birthday lesson, this year, was that I'm too old to eat chocolate for breakfast. Kinda sad. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thin...

#SongoftheDay Under the Ice (Topo & Roby)

Image
This music video was among the preshow weirdness before this week's Movie Jo Night (on the Mary Jo Pehl Show channel on Twitch). I had never heard the song before, but I instantly fell in love with it. I had no idea what the song was called. I found it on the internet by googling the lyrics... which are quite odd. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Got To Be Real (Cheryl Lynn)

Image
Yesterday I took out the recycling, and I was so proud of myself that my body was literally vibrating. In fact, I didn't just take out one load of recycling. I took out two. That means I left my apartment TWICE. And, after three days of not leaving my apartment at all, taking the recycling all the way out to the dumpsters in the parking lot behind my building was a hugely big accomplishment. My partner is visiting his sister, and when we're not together, I find it particularly difficult to leave my apartment. The longer I go without leaving the apartment, the harder it becomes to leave the apartment.  When I lived alone, it was not uncommon for a week to go by before I managed to force myself out. Back then, I did volunteer work once a week, so I had to go out at a certain time. Other people were relying on me. It was still difficult to negotiate with my anxiety, but I could do it because I'd made a promise and because the volunteer work changed people's lives. The...

#SongoftheDay Rock the Boat (Hues Corporation)

Image
We've had some intense (and very lengthy) posts lately, but this won't be one of them. This song was playing in the supermarket the other day. That's pretty much the only reason I've got for playing it today. I mean, it's obviously been stuck in my head since then... but I'm not complaining. My brain subjects me to much worse thoughts than anything disco could possibly inspire. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Bad Company (Purple Disco Machine)

Image
Yesterday I promised to outline how my perfect guest would behave when visiting my partner (who has cancer) and me (his caregiver, living with chronic illness). And I know these wonderful people do exist, because a few of my mom's sisters are like this (my mother also has cancer) and many of my mom's friends are, too.  If only my partner's friends showed us this level of kindness, care, and respect. Ah, but a queer can dream... The perfect guest would reach out to ask if we were up for a visit, and if that's something we would enjoy at this point. My partner would enjoy a visit (and I might tolerate one), so yes, okay, thanks--that would be nice.  The perfect guest would, of course, let us set the date and show up on time. But before showing up, a perfect guest would tell us, "I will bring everything we're going to eat, so don't even think of lifting a finger." They would ask about dietary restrictions. In my partner's case, he could only eat so...

#SongoftheDay Upside Down (Diana Ross and Michael Jackson)

Image
Lately, my partner and I have been spending most of our time at his place, only returning to the city when one of us has a medical appointment. The town he lives in is so small that I always have a mental list of errands I need to run when we get to the city. Then we get here, I'm downed by chronic illness, and I accomplish nothing. In addition to my physical condition, I also have anxiety, which makes it hard to leave the house most of the time. You know this about me, by now. So I end up congratulating myself to a ridiculous degree for doing the smallest things, because everything is such a big accomplishment for me, these days. I'd promised my mother I would visit her when I was in town, and I did that even though it was a horrible pain day and I ended up crashing on my mother's couch for most of my visit. It was important to me not to bail because the last time I saw her, I went with her to chemo. Chemo usually takes a couple days to catch up with her, and this time ...
