#SongoftheDay On the Road Again (Canned Heat)

Image
When I'm home alone, I often listen to a 70s/80s/90s radio station. During their request hour, they played this song, which made me go... I could have sworn this was from the 60s. And my cursory internet search would suggest that it is. Not that I mind. I actually wish the radio station played 60s/70s/80s music. I could do without the 90s. No offense to the 90s, just that its music had a very different vibe. And I also object to the music of my high school years being played on an oldies station, but apparently those songs are now old. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay I'm Walkin' (Fats Domino)

Image
I've been in horrible pain all day (pardon any typos--thinking and typing are super difficult right now) and I just remembered a rant that's been inside me since last year. So buckle up, I guess. My partner and I listen to a classical radio station he refers to as "the old people channel" because it's very much geared toward older people. They regularly play radio spots from the head of a seniors' organization. Last year the head of this organization did a radio spot condemning the media for its "negative portrayal" of older people by showing them using "walkers and canes." I hear a record scratch in my head, which probably shows my age. But I'm actually not a senior. I'm in my forties.  I use both a walker AND a cane (not at the same time). And I would really love to know how using a walker and/or a cane equates to "negative portrayal" of persons in any age category. The only thing I can come up with is that disability = ...

#SongoftheDay Cow Cow Boogie (Dorothy Dandridge)

Image
I've been falling down some fascinating YouTube rabbit holes lately, and landing on songs I've never heard of. Like this one. The line about "local weed" reminded me of my partner's best friend, who helps out people in her neighbourhood in small but meaningful ways. An old man she knows wanted to grow his own medicinal marijuana (it is legal to do so in our juristiction) but he lived in a small apartment with no balcony, and didn't think he could manage it. You know that old real estate rule about buying the worst house on the best street? That's my partner's best friend's house. It is tiny, but it's got a bit of a yard. So she offered to grow cannabis for this old man, and she did and it worked out just fine. Until the day she walked into her yard to find some fancy-ass woman pulling the plants up by their roots. She was like ummm who the hell are you and why are you destroying my garden? Turned out the fancy-ass woman was a real estate ...

#SongoftheDay Get a Haircut (Bluenatics)

Image
I made reference to this song in yesterday's post, so we're listening to it today. This is a cover, but I like it better than the original. While I continue to earn far less money as a writer than my big brother Bob (who is actually my younger sister not-Bob), just last week my sister not-Bob with the haircut and the real job was complaining to me about the price of food and the cost of living. I couldn't believe she was feeling the pinch. She makes good money and I've never heard her worry about not having enough. Although she did just take a year of unpaid stress leave from her job, so that could potentially cut into a person's finances. My mother always said that me and my youngest sister (NOT not-Bob) were the kids she never had to worry about. We could always scrounge up money somewhere. I don't know if that's a compliment, but I suppose it's true. It's easier to scrounge when you've been doing it for decades.  If you're wondering ...

#SongoftheDay Dark was the Night (Blind Willie Johnson)

Image
Remember fifteen years ago, when a compilation album named after this song was the hottest thing on the indie scene? I always equate that album with the Sufjan Stevens song "You Are the Blood," but that has already been our song of the day. I had a rough night, last night. Couldn't sleep. The other day I watched a video about how sleeping position can contribute to neck pain, so I was trying to sleep better. I sleep on my stomach (my partner does, too--on his own stomach, that is. He doesn't sleep on mine) and that is just the worst way to sleep, according to the professionals. But my pillow was too hard and I couldn't get comfortable and I kept moving to the couch, then back to bed. I might have gotten 3 hours of sleep. I was still lying uncomfortably in bed when my partner left for a dental appointment. By the time I rolled out, it was 8:30 in the morning and dark as the night. Rain and fog. No light coming in. Pain in my head, pain in my neck. Very dizzy. ...

#SongoftheDay Working in a Coal Mine (Lee Dorsey)

Image
Last week, I wrote you a post about spending 7+ hours at the hospital with my partner. Just a day in the life of Giselle. When we got home from the hospital, I wanted to crash. I was exhausted beyond exhaustion, but I had to make dinner. My partner's doctors keep emphasizing to us how important it is for him to keep eating, even though it hurts, even though he can't stand the sight of food sometimes. They want him to keep eating in order to keep his swallowing muscles in working order, and in order to keep his weight up. The oncological dietitian we met with explained how important it is to pack every bite with protein and fats. He's supposed to eat dairy with the highest fat content we can find. Put butter and gravy on everything. If in doubt, add ice cream. Sounds like a dream, except that my partner can no longer taste anything. Plus, it hurts. It hurts so much my partner's doctors have prescribed him all kind of pain meds to take prior to eating, plus a disgus...

#SongoftheDay Tango Till They're Sore (Tom Waits)

Image
This song popped into my head while I was eating leftover pasta for lunch. There's so much overwhelming emotion hovering around us these days. I'm writing this the day after a full moon.   Last night (the night of the full moon), as we were eating dinner, I just started crying and I couldn't stop. I couldn't eat.  So I gave up and put my food in the fridge. My partner didn't want to surrender to emotion. He wanted to pretend everything was okay and just have a normal evening. I tried, but I just kept crying. I'm not even sad. It's not even my sadness. It's his. I've absorbed it. #SongoftheDay Improvisation in Cm (Indiara Sfair & Arthur Sowinski)

Image
I'm sitting on my bed trying to edit a monster of a book (it needs A LOT of work!) and outside my window what do I hear? Harmonica. Somebody practices the harmonica around this time every afternoon (it's 3:30 as I write this post) and you know what? They're pretty darn good.  Not this good.  Not yet.  But getting better every day. #SongoftheDay Hard Ground (Leela Gilday)

I want to focus attention on all the nominees from the Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year category in the recently-awarded 2021 Juno Awards. The Junos are Canadian music awards, in case you're reading from somewhere other than Canada. Let's start with the winner, shall we?  It's Leela Gilday, who shares a first name with one of my favourite Futurama characters.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay I Can Sing A Rainbow / Love Is Blue (The Dells)

Image
It's funny how the mind works. The beginning of this song (the "Sing A Rainbow" part) popped into my head out of the blue, and I realized I had no idea what the song was actually called. I knew it as a children's song.  When I found out that it was called Sing A Rainbow, I had to laugh. I'd just been listening to a podcast where they were talking a lot about rainbows. So maybe nothing really comes out of the blue.   The mind is a miraculous thing. #SongoftheDay Rise Up Tuscarora Nation (Pura Fé)

Image
There have been many occasions when I've tried to find the music I was listening to in the very early 2000s--before the existence of YouTube--and I can't locate it anywhere. It's like it never existed in the first place.  The Pura Fé song I wanted to share with you is on that list. But Pura Fé is such an incredible performer that I chose another song instead. It was important, to me, to find a video of Pura Fé performing live. Before I saw her live, I didn't even know you could play a guitar the way she does. It sounds so incredibly doleful that I'm always blown away by the fact that her vocals are even bluesier than the instrumentation. Her voice shouldn't surprise me after all these years. But it does. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Before I Grow Too Old (Fats Domino)

I can't post a Chubby Checker song without also posting a Fats Domino song, because these artists' names have been coupled in my head since childhood. Both were musicians my father listened to. #SongoftheDay Salty Dog Blues (Mississippi John Hurt)

Image
Yesterday we listened to a Cat Power cover--as track called "Salty Dog." But a cover of what? A cover of whom? I did some digging (well, I looked at the wikipedia page for the album) & the song "Salty Dog" is listed as Traditional. However, the original artist is listed as Papa Charlie Jackson, a popular Blues artist and banjo player of the 1920s. While Papa Charlie Jackson's performances of Salty Dog Blues do exist on YouTube, the ones I listened to sounded degraded due to age, which made them difficult for me to hear. Instead, I chose a rendition by Mississippi John Hurt. I can't say for sure how this tune morphed into the children's song I enjoyed in the 80s, but I'm satisfied with my investigative work. Hope you've enjoyed the journey! If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Black Coffee (Sarah Vaughan)

Image
It's two in the afternoon as I write this, and I've just put on a pot of coffee.  I need to stay up late tonight. I'm trying hard to finish recording the audio version of my book Ariadne's Diary. I want to wrap that project before my mother's surgery, which is coming up soon.  I just don't know how much time I'll be able to devote to work while my mom is in recovery. My partner's coffeemaker just went kaput, so I gave him the old one I've had stored in my broom closet for the past 15 years. When I pulled it out, I remembered how long I've actually had that cheap and very ugly contraption: I bought it as a teenager. We didn't have a coffeemaker in the house where I grew up.  Nobody drank coffee (until I did). My father drank tea.  My mother didn't drink anything. But then the 90s happened and coffee was a big thing, and so I got myself addicted to the stuff. That cheap-ass coffeemaker still works perfectly, by the way. This Sarah ...

#SongoftheDay A Message to You Rudy (The Specials)

Image
A couple days ago, The Specials tweeted that it was the 40th anniversary of their release of this song. I learned from Lana Gay on Indie88 , that The Specials' version is actually a cover. Who knew? Maybe you. Maybe not. Here is the 40-year-old version (heh): And the original, from 1967: If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.
