I love telling you tales of my own stupidity, so here's another one: I have heard this song many, many times in my life and until last night I always misheard the "shake it down" part. I always thought they were sinking "Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan now." And I often did think to myself, "Wow, The Commodores must have really liked Chaka Khan." In fact, I must have assumed the song was about Chaka Khan. But it wasn't something I gave my attention to. This was all just happening in the back of my brain. Well, my partner and I went to the Beaches Jazz Festival last night and we listened to the same funk bank I've heard sing this song ten time. Maybe more? But the band had a new vocalist this year, plus I was standing in the front row, so when she started singing "Shake it down," I was like ohhhhh... SHAKE IT DOWN. Not Chaka Khan. I've been doing disco dancing workout videos on YouTube lately and this song plays during one of them. It was the only song in the bunch that I couldn't identify. I would try to listen for lyrics, but I couldn't make any of them out. I asked my partner if he knew the song, but he didn't. I tried to ask the robots that live with us, but they were not helpful. It was a days-long mystery. Finally, I listened to the workout video with headphones and was instantly able to pick out a line, which I plugged into Google. I can't remember if I was telling you this, or if I only told my newsletter subscribers, but my partner's health has been declining since he started testing NEGATIVE for Covid. So, basically, when he should have been getting better, he was actually getting worse. Yesterday, I wondered out loud if maybe he'd developed pneumonia. Later that day he talked to his sister-in-law (a retired nurse) on the phone. He didn't mention what I'd said, and, umprompted, she expressed concern that he might have pneumonia. She told him to see a medical professional right away. Last night, we called telehealth. He got a great nurse on the phone, and after he'd explained his symptoms, she told him to go to the emergency room. Immediately. Last night I dreamed that my partner and I were consulting with a pharmacist. She was suggesting different board games and puzzles for us, and then she asked my partner what his favourite song was. He said, "It's that song Hey, Stupid!" The pharmacist was like hmmmm not sure I know that tune. So I asked him, "Do you mean Bennie and the Jets?" And he was like yeah, that's the one. In the dream, I just got the sense that he was mishearing those first lyrics "Hey, kids" as "Hey, stupid." Now... none of this is based in real life. Bennie and the Jets is not my partner's favourite song. It's definitely a song known for its mondegreens ("She's got electric boobs--her mom has, too") but I've never known anyone to refer to this tune as "Hey, Stupid!" When we were talking about shooting stars the other day, this was actually the first song that popped into my head. Earth Day was last week. To commemorate the occasion, my partner and I went to a nearby park to pick up trash. Most of the garbage we came across was styrofoam take-out containers, beer bottles, and abandoned PPE, but there was one item that will live on in my mind for the rest of my days. You see, I grabbed a plastic bag that had been buried in tall grasses for so long it fell apart as I picked it up.  What fell out was the BIGGEST DILDO I HAVE EVER SEEN.  The other night, my partner and I were working on our current jigsaw puzzle when something on the radio mentioned anniversaries.  I said to my partner, "Don't we have an anniversary?" He was like, "Yes, it's February 9th." I was a wee bit mortified because I totally forgot.  Our anniversary is wedged between my birthday and Valentine's Day, so there was a lot going on around that time.  But I still felt awful for forgetting, and I figured my partner had been too polite to mention it at the time.   I apologized and apologized, until my partner said, "Don't worry--I forgot too."
