#SongoftheDay Drive (The Cars)

Image
I got to find out what you do if you can't lift your head off the pillow but you have to get out of the house because someone has an appointment to check out your boyfriend's home that's for sale. We had decided to go to the community centre so my partner could work out at the gym there and I could work in the library. But my vertigo was bad. My health is just so bad, honestly, I can barely function some days--and yesterday was one of those days. So when we got to the community centre I said to my partner, "I'm just going to lie down in the car." My partner said, "You can't stay in the car! Children die that way!" I assured him that I wasn't a child. He tried to give me his keys so I could at least open a window, but I didn't want him not to have his keys. I wouldn't take them. He tried to convince me that this was a bad idea, but I wouldn't listen. I should have listened. Because the car got hot fast. And when I realized I ne...

#SongoftheDay Old Emotions (Spoons)

Image
Today I feel like that kid who tries to help their parents clean, but ends up making the house way messier than it started out. (I'm thinking of the video my stepdaughter sent us, of our granddaughter sweeping Cheerios into a dustpan and then not noticing as she spilled those same Cheerios out of the dustpan, spraying them around the room like confetti.) My messy kid-feelings started when my partner told me he was going to walk to the grocery store in town to buy lettuce. It's strawberry season, so I asked him to pick up strawberries too. When he got home, the tote bag he'd carried the produce in had not only leaked but also ground strawberry juice into his very light-coloured khaki shorts. They were smeared red in multiple places. I felt like this was my fault, even though he kept assuring me it was not, because I had requested the strawberries. So I told him to take off his shorts and I would wash out the strawberry before it stained. After I'd scrubbed the short...

#SongoftheDay Cruel Summer (Bananarama)

I mentioned that my partner is off visiting family. Well, before he left, I said to him, "I'm glad you get a vacation from taking care of me," and I meant that sincerely. I was his caregiver when he was going through cancer treatment. I know how gruelling it is to take care of someone who is seriously ill. While my illness isn't "serious" in the sense that I'm not going to die of it, it is debilitating and it is chronic. The specialist we saw confirmed that this condition will never go away--we're just trying to manage it the best we can.  So far, it's not well-managed, despite the best efforts of all involved. I have more bad days than good. Many, many more bad days than good. The future looks bleak when you're sick all the time. And not just for me. My partner is a sensitive person, and I know it gets him down, seeing me so unwell. Caring for me. It's not easy. I can manage on my own, but I must admit, life is easier with him around...

#SongoftheDay Hold Me Now (Thompson Twins)

My partner is visiting with family, so I've got a New Wave playlist keeping me company.  Eighties music is nostalgic for me. My partner is simply perplexed by it. He would never tell me to turn it off, but I know he's only tolerating my tunes. We both enjoy music from the 60s and 70s, and classical music, so that's what we listen to when we're together. I'm enjoying listening to my eighties music, though. I don't like silence when I'm alone, so it's filling the heatwave airwaves today. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. I'm also an  Amazon Influencer,  so hopefully I can make a little pocket change when you buy stuff by clicking through  my affiliate links . I also recommend subscribing to my newslett...

#SongoftheDay Ordinary World (Duran Duran)

Image
I needed to give myself a bit of time before telling this story, because what I'm going to tell you about was very upsetting. Made me cry a lot. And I knew that as soon as I told you about it, I would start crying all over again. So I've taken a few days.  Here we go. Last week I had a medical appointment. I needed to get to my doctor's office for an injection. That day, my health was awful. I was weak and dizzy and all sorts of bad. Normally I would have used my walker, but the subway station near my doctor's office is not accessible. I mean, it is on paper, but in practice the elevators have been out of commission for over a year. The elevators are actually boarded up. So I know that if I take my walker to that station, I need to carry it up three flights of stairs. Which I have done. More than once. But that day I decided to just use a cane instead. I needed the walker, but I did not have the strength to carry it up three flights of stairs. Turned out the bus on my s...

#SongoftheDay Listen to the Radio (Pukka Orchestra)

Image
We came home Friday after a long week of difficult medical appointments in the city.  I've gone through a number of very difficult times in my life, but nothing has ever been quite this difficult.  Maybe I only think that because it's happening now. The past is in the past. I know I got through it. This... I can only hope. So, anyway, we got home on Friday and my partner said he needed a drink, after the week he'd had. I don't drink very often, but it had indeed been an awful week, so I decided to make myself a mojito. The garden here came with an ever-increasing supply of fresh mint. I am a lightweight, so after drinking my mojito I immediately crashed on the outdoor couch on the back deck. It's my favourite place in the house, even though it's not in the house.  Recently, I discovered that I can play FM radio through my phone. I also discovered a radio station that plays music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Listening to that station is the only form of self-care ...

#SongoftheDay She Blinded Me With Science (Thomas Dolby)

Image
I'm trying to work, but I'm mostly watching the Rifftrax edition of a movie called Strange Impersonations about a scientist who fakes her own death. At one point something explodes and MJ goes, "Science!" That's why we're listening to this song today. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely! I'm also an  Amazon Influencer,  so hopefully I can make a little pocket change when you buy stuff by clicking through  my affiliate links . But you don't HAVE to do any of that. I'm very happy to get a daily visit from you, so just keep coming back. Oh, and I also recommend hitting the "Subscribe...

#SongoftheDay Bring It On (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds)

Image
Age never meant anything to me until 40.  To me, 40 signified not only adulthood, but an age by which you should have your shit fully together. All that grown-up stuff like family and financial security should be tied up by the time you reach 40. When 40 popped onto the horizon, I started making sweeping changes in my life. I left a relationship I'd been in for more than a decade without knowing why. Now I realize I ended it because it wasn't going anywhere--my girlfriend already had a permanent partner, and I was really just someone on the side. Even if I was important to her (and I believe I truly was), it wasn't a situation that provided the dignity I was looking for. I wanted to be someone's someone--for the first time in my life.  I wanted to finally be THE ONLY ONE for somebody.  I realized that I'd been doing myself a grave injustice in allowing myself to be hidden from view in the lives of people who were important to me. I believe in poly relationships, but...

#SongoftheDay Stacy's Mom (Fountains of Wayne)

Image
This song is on the radio right now, and I can't believe it's never been a Song of the Day. Many years ago, I wrote a book called STACY'S DAD HAS GOT IT GOING ON, so I have a great deal of affection for this tune.  Also, I've decided I am now a MILF--not quite at the level of Stacy's Mom, but I do the best with what I've got.  My partner finds that term MILF offensive and doesn't understand how anyone could proudly adopt it, but my partner's never been perimenopausal, so... #SongoftheDay Once in a Lifetime (Talking Heads)

Image
I have featured this song in the past, but the version I put up was a cover by Kermit the Frog.  Let's have the original, shall we?   This song popped into my head the other week, when my partner and I visited a river to look for fish. Salmon, to be specific. This autumn, we have visited four stretches of river here in Toronto to watch the salmon run. You could almost call it a hobby. Anyway, I don't know whether it was "the rocks and stones" or the water itself, but our surroundings brought this song to mind. That's why we're listening to it today. #SongoftheDay Cars (Gary Numan)

I could be biased, but I would have to say that the music from when I was growing up is the best music there is. Again, I could be biased. It's possible you disagree. But here we are. In cars.
