#SongoftheDay Hard Times (The Human League)

Image
Remember when my partner and I were sick a month or two back? Well, he got sick two days before I did. I spent those two days taking care of him and watching Bergerac on BritBox. This track was playing in a very 80s nightclub on one episode. I'd been looking for an excuse to play some Human League for you, so it works out perfectly. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. I'm also an  Amazon Influencer,  so hopefully I can make a little pocket change when you buy stuff by clicking through  my affiliate links . I also recommend subscribing to my newsletter. I generally e-mail subscribers with a weekly update, and I would LOVE to have you on the list.  Click here to sign up:  http://eepurl.com/R4b11 See ...

#SongoftheDay Moonbeam (Giselle Renarde)

Image
Often I forget that I once made an album of... ummm... music. I almost feel like there should be a question mark, there: ummm... music? Yes, it's music. Let's have some confidence, shall we? It is definitely music and I definitely made it. I'm just not sure how to classify this music. I think I created most of it more than a decade ago, although I only released the album a couples years back. It hasn't exactly made me a household name. Probably doesn't help that I hardly ever tell anyone about it. The trouble is, I'm very self-effacing and I have difficulty taking pride in anything I create. That's a pretty sucky place to come from when you create things for a living. But here we are. And here's some music I made. I picked this song to play because I wanted to well you about the weird background sound. I don't know what you call it because I no longer have a brain--thank you, menopause. Anyway, let's call it the background sound. To create i...

#SongoftheDay You Are The Blood (Sufjan Stevens)

Image
I've been watching a true crime series that's not very good, but somehow still satisfying? Can't explain it, but maybe you understand. Anyway, the background music in one episode reminded me of this track, which I haven't heard in years. They used to play it often on a CBC radio program I listened to daily.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely! I'm also an  Amazon Influencer,  so hopefully I can make a little pocket change when you buy stuff by clicking through  my affiliate links . But you don't HAVE to do any of that. #SongoftheDay are you beautiful? (Giselle Renarde)

Image
The computer I record my audiobooks on is more than fifteen years old and almost entirely out of space. When I first got it, I learned to use the programs I wasn't familiar with just by using them. I spent hours and then days toying with Garageband, creating music for my own entertainment. Now that this computer's just about ready to be put out to pasture, I've been going through the hard drive to see what I've got.  I came across all this music I created over the years and decided to release it as an album. It's available for you to listen to now as Beautiful Noise . Today we're listening to a song that pretty accurately represents the depression and anxiety self-talk circling my skull.  Even all these years later, I recognize it well.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Burning Down the House (Talking Heads)

Image
This weekend, some lady parked in front of our neighbour's house. She got out and said to her husband, "Oops haha we're parked in front of a fire hydrant. Oh well!  Hope we don't get caught." And she just left her car there and went on her merry way. Getting caught is the least of my hopes for this motorist.  If she doesn't care that her actions are putting other people's homes and possibly lives in danger, I hope karma takes some long and drawn-out action against her. My best friend's house burned down, as did the home of a former publisher of mine, so I'm not particularly tolerant of people who think a convenient parking spot is more important than the safety of an entire neighbourhood. Now let's decompress with David Byrne. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Hole / The Used (Girls Rituals)

Even though I'm not a religious person, I really like the idea of Lent. Making a change for 40 days is an interesting way to test the waters of a new life.  The first time I gave Lent a go (which was probably only two or three years ago), I decided to give up meat. It went really well.  It went so well that I thought I might just give it up forever.  I went back pretty fast, after forty days were up, but it was still a worthwhile exercise. I don't remember what I gave up last year, but this year I've decided to take a break from social media during Lent. Should be good for my mental health.  I always end up feeling pretty awful after scrolling through Twitter for hours on end. My big concern was: where am I going to hear about new music?  I follow musicians I enjoy on Twitter, and that's how I hear they've come out with something new. Well, today I hopped over to YouTube to start schedule posts for this site, and one of the first videos suggested to me was...

#SongoftheDay Is It Cold In The Water? (SOPHIE)

Image
You've probably heard that 34-year-old trans musician SOPHIE died in an accident last weekend. I encourage you to read this great article about her life and work.   Read also this moving tribute written by Morgan M. Page .  This song is just gorgeous. It's breaking my heart to listen to it right now. #SongoftheDay Heto Na (Pantayo)

Image
I think I've been promising to share this particular track for... oh... the past year? But there are just so many incredible songs on Pantayo's self-titled release that I guess I took my time in getting to this one. (Kaingin gets stuck in my head all the time, and I'm never mad about that.)  If you don't yet have your copy of Pantayo, now is a great time to buy it:  https://pantayo.bandcamp.com/album/pantayo If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Black Magic (Backxwash)

Image
Well, this is a first. Today I'm featuring a song we've already listened to here on the blog.  Why?  Because Backxwash just won the coveted Polaris Prize for her remarkable album God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It , and this is my favourite track. It features Ada Rook, another artist I adore.   Huge congratulations to Backxwash on a well-deserved win! Here's where you can snag a copy of her album (and you definitely should!):  https://backxwash.bandcamp.com/album/god-has-nothing-to-do-with-this-leave-him-out-of-it If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay incorporeal (rook&nomie)

Image
I've been listening to the album me&you  a lot, lately. This music really helps me when I'm having bad mental health days. I don't think I've mentioned this here, but I sought out online therapy recently. I'd heard on the news that a variety of services were being offered for free because of covid, so I did a basic google search and found one that's a combination of CBT and communication with a therapist. It's going well.  I've given rave reviews to all the people in my life who need more mental health support than usual right now, but I don't think anyone has gone for it. Too bad. It's no silver bullet--I still have bad days--but I'm practising techniques that are helping.  The last time I had access to a therapist was 20 years ago, and that was a pretty garbage experience. This is the total opposite. I'm so pleased, and very very grateful. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the...

#SongoftheDay Intergalactic (Beastie Boys)

Image
Comedy is my go-to coping mechanism to deal with stuff like depression and grief.  For Christmas, my brother gave me a Futurama DVD box set, so I've been devouring episodes lately. Beastie Boys are featured in a pretty early episode. The funny thing is that, when I initially watched Futurama (on TV), I had no idea who they were.  I've never seen this music video until now. You know I watch a lot of old MST3K, so I'm having Gamera flashbacks. heh If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay What's He Building? (Tom Waits)

Image
I mentioned Tom Waits the other day just to tease you, but here we have an intriguing track. Every time I'm looking out the window, watching what the neighbours are up to in the alleyway beside our apartment, my partner comes up behind me and asks, "What's he building in there?"  heh.  Point taken. #SongoftheDay Stigmata (Backxwash ft. DeathIrl, Ada Rook and Alekto)

I couldn't find this track on YouTube, so I'm embedding from Bandcamp . Hope this works. I honestly can't get enough Backxwash. My mental health has been pure garbage lately, and artists like Backxwash help me so much.  To all you musicians out there: thank you for the music. I'm quoting ABBA. Yikes. #SongoftheDay Wow (Beck)

I listened to this song dozens (possibly hundreds?) of times when the album Colors came out and UNTIL TODAY, I thought the lyrics were "luminous moose." Anyway, great song for summer--moose or no moose. #SongoftheDay Queen of the May (Veda Hille)

Image
Before May is out, I want to feature this track. Because it's got "May" in the name. I do have a story about it. When I first saw this video, something about it spoke to me. I remember sending it to my former girlfriend (before we were a couple), thinking it would woo her, somehow. I can't quite speak for my thought process, as this was well over a decade ago. We worked together at the time, and I remember going in the next day and asking her, "Did you get my email? I sent it at three in the morning. It's a music video. You might like it." Another girl walked into our conversation, asking, "A music video? Whose music? Would I like it?" I remember being so irritated, wanting to tell this extraneous girl to leave us alone. I was trying to flirt. Oddly enough, a ten-year relationship started with this video. That relationship ended the way the song does, come to think of it. Metaphorically. I went to a play at the Tarragon and the pr...

#SongoftheDay Spells (Backxwash ft. Devi McCallion)

#SongoftheDay Creep U (Black Dresses)

Image
You've probably noticed by now that I'm a big fan of Devi McCallion and Ada Rook. Together, they make up Black Dresses--and they've just released a new album called Peaceful as Hell . Believe it or not, I haven't listened to it yet. I've actually been writing a book lately. And reading a book.  Those two activities are taking up a lot of my time. I used to have music on all the time, even while I was working, and I thought music helped me to work. But, you know, my partner likes QUIET when he's concentrating on stuff, so I guess I've gotten used to the sound of silence. The other day, I put on my headphones to listen to stuff while I was writing, and I found that I could no longer do two things at once.  I couldn't listen and write. It had to be one or the other. Which is kind of annoying. But I guess, this way, I listen better and write better.  Hope so. Anyway, this song is from Peaceful as Hell .   Buy your copy at Bandcamp . If you're ...

#SongoftheDay drift+disconnect (rook&nomie)

Image
I've been listening to rook&nomie's album me&you on my way to the hospital and on my way home every day.  It's the album I'm hooked on right now, and it's helping me cope with my mother's illness like you would not believe. I saw Rook mention, on Twitter, that this is probably the last album they'll be making together. Now I sad, because their music really appeals to me. Soft and screamy, just how I like it. Head on over to  https://rookandnomie.bandcamp.com  and stream the holy hell out of  me&you .  Buy now ! #SongoftheDay Cartoon Network (Black Dresses)

Image
There's a song on the Black Dresses album  LOVE AND AFFECTION FOR STUPID LITTLE BITCHES  that begins with the lyrics "Music isn't magic." I laugh every time I hear that, because I'm always saying the opposite. Music has gotten me through so many periods of deep depression and intense anxiety that I think it must be magic.  I also believe that honey is magic.  This song is helping me a lot right now. The whole album is.  I really like it.   Y ou should  buy it .  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.
