#SongoftheDay The Old Prince Still Lives At Home (Shad)

Image
I got into a bit of an argument with my mother about the way she imposes her excessive frugality on other people. Like, if that's the way you want to live, go for it, but I don't appreciate the snide comments when I choose to spend my money however I do.  And I'm not talking about spending thousands of bucks on... well, anything. I'm talking about buying a handmade handbag for $45 from a local artisan.  Supporting artistic entrepreneurs is important to me because I am also an artistic entrepreneur. But, you know what? It would be important to me even if I wasn't.  But my mom's got to raise her eyebrows and tell me that she got her purse for $3 at Value Village. Well, good for you. That's your choice. I had my first job when I was 8 years old. Let me spend the money I've been working for all my life. Anyway. Sorry. I visited my mother last week, and now I'm full of mom-related rants. The "dentist" verse in this track is so funny. As someon...

#SongoftheDay Crazy (Daisy Dee)

Image
I usually fall asleep listening to Rifftrax or old MST3k movies. For the past month, my cinematic masterpiece of choice has been Cool as Ice, a 1991 film starring Vanilla Ice. One day, when I was very sick, I listened to Cool as Ice at least 5 times in a row. I tried to actually watch it once (with my eyes, I mean), and the cinematography made me nauseuous. So I just listen. It's a weird obsession. VERY weird. So, this song is from the soundtrack. There's a lot of music in the movie, and it's not all bad. A lot of it piques my nostalgia. By the way... this video. It reminds me of those lip synch music videos people used to make at Canada's Wonderland. I can't decide whether I love it or... not. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help m...

#SongoftheDay Good Vibrations (Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch)

Image
Oh dear. I woke up with this song in my head and I couldn't remember who it was by. I was more than a little surprised when it turned out to be Marky Mark, because all I could remember was the "It's such a good vibration" part--which is sung by Loleatta Holloway. I looked that up. But that's the only good part of the song (am I making a controversial statement?) so I really wanted to know who was singing. Blows my mind to think that I now have a granddaughter, and that some day my granddaughter might hear this track from 1991 and think of it as Grandma Music. From the 1900s. Whoa. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Rapper's Delight (The Sugarhill Gang)

Image
When we listened to Chic's "Good Times" yesterday, perhaps you started thinking about this track. Or maybe you're listening to Rapper's Delight today and thinking there's something familiar about the undercoating.  I learned the history of Rapper's Delight from a segment on Drunk History. My brain doesn't retain a lot of information these days, but I do recall that Chic sued (or threatened to sue?) The Sugarhill Gang over their use of the bass line from Good Times to underpin Rapper's Delight. Ultimately, they settled on sharing credit (or writing credit? My brain really does not work...) for this song. Before I saw that Drunk History segment, my partner and I were washing dishes and listening to the 70s at 7 on the radio. They played Rapper's Delight and I was like, "The station must have made a mistake. This song can't be from the 70s." But, sure enough, it is. 1979, to be exact. I guess the oldies station knows a thing or...

#SongoftheDay Ms. Jackson (Outkast)

Image
I can't remember why it came up in conversation, but my partner asked me if I'd ever read The Lottery by Shirley Jackson . I hadn't. But I had just listened to a podcast where a fellow queer author talked about S hirley Jackson's "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" as her comfort book. It seemed a little coincidental, hearing two random mentions of Shirley Jackson in a matter of days, so I got this book out of the library. I just started reading it. It's sitting on the coffee table right now. Thing is, every time I look at the cover and see "Jackson," this song pops into my brain. Let me say, there are other Outkast songs I would MUCH rather have in my head, but this is the one I'm stuck with.  Sorry. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavou...

#SongoftheDay Where is the Love? (Black Eyed Peas)

Image
My partner and I have been watching a lot of major league baseball lately. This song gets played a lot when they're cutting to commercials. Years ago, my mother used to get free tickets to Jays games from her boss. He had season's tickets, but he often couldn't use them, so he'd give them away at the last minute. My mother would phone me, because I could be expected to be available on short notice, but I wasn't enthusiastic about going. I have fond childhood memories of going to Jays games back when they were played at Exhibition Stadium, but as an adult, I found baseball super boring. I will admit that my mother would sometimes bribe me with candy. Even though I was a full-grown adult at the time, the candy bribes worked.  For a while.  Then I started to find the games so boring, even candy wouldn't cut it. Now? I don't find baseball boring anymore. Not sure why. I only started watching games because my partner was watching them, and I just wanted to cu...

#SongoftheDay Tick Tock (Clean Bandit and Mabel ft. 24kGoldn)

Image
I'm sitting alone in my partner's house, and I'm reminded why I don't usually sit alone in my partner's house. (I usually sit outside.) The clock. It's a sentimental item, for him. His parents received it as a wedding present, so it's old. And it ticks. And it tocks. When there's no one else in the house, it's all I hear: tick, tock, tick, tock. Ticking the hours of my life away. It is the most depressing noise. Not just depressing, but existentially depressing. It might as well be reminding me: you're going to die. The other day, my partner told me that he would like to give the clock to his son. As a gift. He's just not sure about packing it and shipping it overseas. It might get damaged in the process. I don't always want to see things go from this house, but the clock I can live without. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most a...

#SongoftheDay Floor Kids : B-Boy O-Live vs. B-Boy Nugs (Kid Koala and The Slew)

Yesterday I mentioned that an old friend of mine actually lived out my dream of becoming a professional animator. This is a collaboration he created with Kid Koala. (I'm so proud of my cool friend.) #SongoftheDay Luna Llena (Arca)

Image
There was a full moon recently--a blue moon, in fact--but I didn't see it. We were still in the city that night, but you can't see the moon from my apartment and we didn't have the energy to leave my building.  A stark contrast to the previous full moon, which we went out in search of.  We learned, at that time of night, that we had to walk down the street behind my building until we got to the first cross road.  From there, if we stood at the corner of the sidewalk, we could just see the moon over another apartment building. There was a satellite dish somewhat in the way, but we could see it. A stark contrast, also, to the night my partner woke me at 2:30 in the morning and brought me into the backyard to watch the shooting stars.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica...

#SongoftheDay Crybaby :*( (Dijon)

Image
I messed up my shoulder falling off a child's swing set.  Sadly, my partner encourages my childish behaviour, which sometimes results in injury. This time, I got on a swing and he immediately started pushing me. Turns out the swing set wasn't cemented into the ground, so when I swung back in my partner's direction the front feet lifted. I panicked and tried to get down, but I was too high above the ground and I was also still clinging to the chains. I slid downward while my arms stayed up, cranking my shoulder and leaving me with a sturdy ache. Guess my body's too old to act like a kid.   If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Buffalo Stance (Neneh Cherry)

Image
This song has been in my head, off and on, for weeks. I finally looked up two things:  a) Which TV show used it as theme music?  Jamie's 15 Minute Meals.  b) What is a Buffalo Stance, anyway? I'm not quoting the answer I found, because I looked it up last week, but I seem to recall reading a snippet from an interview with Neneh Cherry stating that it refers to the attitude you need to take in order to survive inner city life. Years ago, I wrote an extensive blog post on this topic. I grew up in a neighbourhood known for its gang activity, and the more time I spend away from that place the less I like going back. My mom still lives there. Years ago I visited her weekly. Then it was monthly. Now it's... well, I could blame the pandemic for keeping me away, but that might be a convenient excuse. When I wrote previously (on a different blog) about who I need to be to return to my old neighbourhood, I talked about putting on another face to take the bus to my mom's house. I ...

#SongoftheDay Push It (Salt-N-Pepa)

Image
I've lived in a high-rise for so many years that I stopped trying to be quiet in bed. The walls at my place are so thick you really can't hear other people's sex noises through them. You need to be out in the hallway--then you can hear sex through people's doors, if they're having it, and they're being loud. My partner's place is a different story. His apartment is part of an old house. You can hear everything through the walls. What makes it worse is that we know all our neighbours in his building. We're friendly with everyone. They're all nice people. Most are single and elderly. For a solid week, all of our neighbours were away visiting family. We had the whole building to ourselves. We could have had the loudest sex you could ever imagine. Except I got food poisoning. And then I went to my apartment. And then my partner had a night of bad intestinal cramping. But finally we had sex. Finally!  One night only of shout-it-from-the-rooftops orgasms. ...

#SongoftheDay Just A Friend (Biz Markie)

I'm sure you all heard that Biz Markie died recently. That's why we're listening to this little ditty from 1989, part of the soundtrack of my youth. #SongoftheDay Same Song (Digital Underground)

This song has been floating around my head ever since we listened to "All Around the World" earlier in week.  I don't think I've heard it since the early 90s, but it obviously lives on in my mind. When I looked up Blondie's Call Me yesterday, this song was suggested. #SongoftheDay In Living Color Opening Theme (Heavy D & the Boyz)

Image
Hold on to your horses--we're not leaving 1990 yet. Maybe you remember a show called In Living Color? My partner doesn't, but I watched it religiously. My cousin and I would dance along with the fly girls. We thought our moves were amazing. I'm pretty sure they weren't. But that's not what this story is about. There was a boy I went to school with who would sing the lyrics as, "You can do what you want to do... UNDER THE COVERS."  My friends and I were so innocent we found those words absolutely scandalous. Oh my gosh, under the covers? That is so naughty!  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Do The Bartman (Bart Simpson)

Image
Yesterday I mentioned the album The Simpsons Sing the Blues . Well, this song was on that album.  I haven't seen the video since it first aired--I believe in 1990--but as soon as I rewatched it, I remembered that first viewing like it was yesterday.  I'm just going by memory, here, so I could be wrong (I often am), but I remember this music video airing just after an episode of The Simpsons. It might have been before, but I think it was after. The Simpsons aired on Thursday nights on Fox, back then, and I'm assuming this video and the song were meant to make a splash. I'm not sure they did.  The Simpsons were definitely huge, right out of the gate.  Everywhere you turned, there was merch and counterfeit merch. I remember there was a very popular T-shirt that had Bart on it and underneath it said: Underachiever and Proud Of It. My nerdy friend had a counterfeit sweatshirt that said: Overachiever and Proud Of It.  I don't know where his mother found it, but ...

#SongoftheDay What's Next? (Drake)

Image
I dreamed about Drake again.  He wasn't coming on to me this time.  In this dream, he arrived on the porch of my partner's apartment and started cleaning a chair off for his girlfriend. His girlfriend then came inside looking for a particular kind of cleanser, and we searched for it together.  Drake told me he needed to go to the cemetery to pay his respects, but before he left we looked up into the sky (which was dark) and there were these huge kites flying. Gigantic kites. But, going back to the start of the dream, when I saw Drake approaching, I worried a bit because the playlist I was listening to was full of The Weeknd, but no Drake. I didn't know how he'd feel about that. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.
