#SongoftheDay Postman's Knock (The Albion Band)

Image
Yesterday I was telling you about stamp collecting. The reason my partner and I were talking about stamps in the first place is that a friend of his used to collect toy cars. This friend recently sold his entire toy car collection and decided he was going to collect stamps instead. My partner and I were talking about collections and collecting, and it occured to me that there's nothing I collect and there's nothing I feel inclined to collect. I enjoy that other people have fun collecting things. I'm not anti-collecting. But for me, having grown up in a hoarder home, the idea of collecting is kind of mashed up with accumulating. I know there's a difference, but I have a compulsion to get rid of things rather than keep them. But, you know, if I HAD TO collect something... I mean, stamps are small. They don't take up much room. Although, having said that, I bet there are stamp collectors with rooms full of stamps. If you're wondering how you can support me ...

#SongoftheDay Whiskey in the Jar (Thin Lizzy)

Image
After I'd pulled yesterday's song of the day, YouTube decided that traditional Irish music is the only thing I want to listen to. Naturally, this tune was suggested. I had to laugh, because the only time I have ever heard this song, it was performed by my sister and her first-year fiddle class. I kind of couldn't believe it when my sister told me she was taking a fiddle class. She is a classical pianist. She has a degree in music. She knows how to play the violin. I never would have imagined she might have any interest in playing music that wasn't... classical. I want to point out that she was not a child when she took this class. She was in her thirties. Maybe she was trying to break out of her comfort zone. Anyway, it was really entertaining to see my sister, who was once a music teacher, participating in this concert where she was a learner. Despite all her music education and her talent in the classical sphere, I gotta say... she and her fellow adult fiddle learn...

#SongoftheDay Drunken Sailor (The Irish Rovers)

Image
We had a Skype session with our granddaughter (who is not yet two years old) the other day. She kept dancing around the room to music we couldn't hear. My step-daughter explained to us that the song was coming out of a book--you could press a button in the book, and a song would play. Apparently it's our granddaughter's favourite song to dance to. Since we couldn't hear it, we asked what the song was. It was this song. This was the song. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay The Maid on the Shore (Stan Rogers)

Image
I've mentioned before that I'm kind of obsessed with a show called Mayday. It's about plane crashes, in case you've never seen it. The episode I just watched told the story of the plane crash that killed this Canadian folk musician, Stan Rogers. I didn't recognize the name, so I looked him up on Youtube. As soon as I heard his voice I was like ohhhhhh okay I do know him after all. What a sad loss to music.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. #SongoftheDay qaumajuapik (Riit)

Riit was featured in the track we listened to yesterday, so we've got her again today. I love her music. I love this sound, with its mix of traditional throat singing and contemporary electronica. It works so well.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair (Nina Simone)

Image
It's National Novel Writing Month, and I've decided to hack away at one of my works-in-progress from the Lesbian Diaries series. This particular book is a little different from the rest, because it involves a haunting--perhaps even a succubus? I guess we'll have to wait and see.  I'm not far in. Today, as I was reading over the first few chapters, which I wrote at the hospital while my mother was recovering from surgery earlier this year, I came across this line: Black is the colour of my true love's hair.  And that's why we're listening to Nina Simone's gorgeous rendition of this traditional tune.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Danny Boy (John McDermott)

I just found out a family friend died. He was the Irishest Irish person I've ever met, so I'm listening to Danny Boy and sobbing like an infant. His death is hitting me HARD. Take care of yourself and know that you are loved. #SongoftheDay I Can Sing A Rainbow / Love Is Blue (The Dells)

Image
It's funny how the mind works. The beginning of this song (the "Sing A Rainbow" part) popped into my head out of the blue, and I realized I had no idea what the song was actually called. I knew it as a children's song.  When I found out that it was called Sing A Rainbow, I had to laugh. I'd just been listening to a podcast where they were talking a lot about rainbows. So maybe nothing really comes out of the blue.   The mind is a miraculous thing. #SongoftheDay Strong Women's Song (Shelley A. Young)

Image
I almost never read the comments on anything--life's too short and my mental health is far too fragile. But when I pulled the link for this video, I did peek at the first few comments and I was happy to see how empowering listeners find this song, and this video in particular. This is the song the main character in my book Juliet's Diary listens to non-stop toward the end of the story. #SongoftheDay Scarborough Fair (Zahliia Rose)

Image
I spent hours searching for an arrangement of Scarborough Fair I once heard on a TV show. I don't remember what the show was called.  That would make things too easy. Or maybe not, because after all my looking and listening, I never did find that particular version. But I did find this one. And it's gorgeous. I haven't been able to find out anything about the artist, but her voice is incredible. Just goes to show that, while you might not always find exactly what you're looking for, sometimes you do find something you didn't know you needed. #SongoftheDay Listen to the Lambs (The Nathaniel Dett Chorale)

Image
We had opera yesterday and classical the day before, so clearly it's time for some choral music. Today we're listening to The Nathaniel Dett Chorale, named for the Black Canadian composer Robert Nathaniel Dett, who lived from 1882 until 1943. In the 90s, I received vocal training from the group's founder and musical director Brainerd Blyden-Taylor, so that's my personal connection with today's piece. Our soloist is Nicole Jordan. #SongoftheDay Now is the Month of Maying (The King's Singers)

Image
I have been waiting almost a year to bring you this song. It always reminds me of the 90s sitcom Third Rock from the Sun, because there's an episode where one character's madrigal group sings it. Took me forever to choose which video to bring you. Not that I mind listening to this tune over and over. It is, hands-down, my favourite madrigal. Every time I hear it, I get a little pep in my step. Ultimately, I chose this vintage King's Singers performance because of the outfits. And that one guy's moustache. Happy May Day! #SongoftheDay Those Were The Days (Mary Hopkin)

Image
This song popped into my head the other day when I was making pasta for dinner. My partner was like, "I'll make the salad," and I said, "We can't have salad. We're out of lettuce." As I watched his face fall (this dude LOVES salads), it occurred to me that only a few short weeks (months?) ago, we could have popped out to the produce market down the street and bought a head of lettuce. We could have gone together! Now, if we're out of lettuce, we wait until the next big shopping expedition. There's no popping into shops anymore. The quickest turnaround we've had at a supermarket is an hour and a half. I don't want to sound complain-y. I am extremely grateful to have enough to eat. There are so many people who are struggling much more than we are. Anyway, I have a lot of experience making do with very little. Not having lettuce is hardly the end of the world. But, much in the spirit of this song, it was nice to be able to go out a...

#SongoftheDay The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Gordon Lightfoot)

Image
This song came on, once again, as we were washing dishes (I guess that's our primary music-listening-to time), and I burst into tears pretty much instantly.  I find this song, and particularly this version, so deeply beautiful. I can't listen to it without crying. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Linstead Market (Miss Lou)

Image
Today we have another Jamaican folk song we used to sing at school when I was a kid. I remember us all being like, "What's a quattie?" (I had to look it up again, because I couldn't remember--it's currency, basically a halfpenny, I think?) This song popped into my head the last time I was doing volunteer work. Can't believe that was... over a month ago? It was so much a part of my week, and I feel its absence like an ache. Anyway, I overheard a conversation between two people and they were talking about ackee. I'm trying to remember what exactly they were saying. Talking about different ackee dishes they'd tried, maybe? Aside from ackee and saltfish. Ackee pizza? No... Ackee what? This is going to drive me nuts. #SongoftheDay Mango Walk (Mini-Musical Female Duet)

Image
Funny how stuff from your childhood comes back, full force, for no conceivable reason. We used to sing this traditional Jamaican song in school, when I was a kid. It popped into my head last week. No clue why. I haven't heard it for more than 30 years. But it came back to me and it just wouldn't leave. Not that I mind. There are far worse things to focus on, right now, than music. As I searched YouTube for just the right version of this tune to play for you, I came across a children's school concert that had been posted, and it honest-to-god brought me to tears. I can't tell you how much I would love to go to a school concert right now, and I don't even have kids. #SongoftheDay Tiptoe Through the Tulips (Tiny Tim)

Image
Yesterday I was thinking about music used and abused by TV commercials, and today I'm still thinking about that. This tune is used in the background of an ad I used to see on Youtube a lot (for an airline or travel service--I don't remember) and it's there to represent conformity. I'd tense up every time that ad came on, because in what way does Tiny Tim represent conformity? #SongoftheDay Divine (Pantayo)

Image
Just heard about this group from an indie station I listen to. The article I read describes Pantayo as "queer diasporic Filipinas." Naturally, I assumed my followers would be interested. Smooth track. I like it. If you like it too, tell someone else who might. That's how we spread the word and lift each other up. Here is their Bandcamp:  https://pantayo.bandcamp.com I highly recommend the album Live at X Avant X (especially Track 2, but... all the other tracks, too).
