#SongoftheDay Watermelon Man (Herbie Hancock)

Image
I've been meaning to tell you this story for months. I promised to tell it to you weeks ago. So here we are, finally: the watermelon story. So, I'd just finished shopping at the little grocery store near my building. I was using a walker that day. I can wedge the shopping basket between the metal bars on either side while I shop, then pile my bags on the seat to get them home. That works unless I'm carrying anything really heavy. One time my partner tried using my walker to bring home three cases (36 cans) of Ensure, and he ended up slicing open his finger. Blood everywhere. But that's not the watermelon story. I interrupted myself. Let's start again. So, I'd just finished my shopping and I was coming out of the little grocery store with my bags piled up on my walker when I noticed that there was an older woman trying to fish a watermelon out of one of those huge cardboard containers they keep watermelon in outside the store. With zero luck. She, like me,...

#SongoftheDay The Twilight Zone Opening

Image
If I'm going to mention The Twilight Zone (as I did yesterday), I should tell you this story: a couple weeks ago my partner and I were at my apartment. I've got a bunch of Twilight Zone episodes on the PVR, so I picked one to watch before bed. It was the episode where William Shatner takes advice from a napkin holder. My partner isn't interested in paranormal stuff (although I would argue that this particular episode is more psychological than paranormal) and at the end he said, "It was interesting to see William Shatner so young. I've never seen that before." I thought he was talking about the episode--he'd never seen that episode before. But no. He had never seen The Twilight Zone! Like, what? Shocking. There are a bunch of different openings for this show, but... here's one. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check t...

#SongoftheDay I Dream of Jeannie Theme Music

Image
Okay, I mentioned I Dream of Jeannie yesterday, and since it's one of my earliest childhood memories, let's listen to the theme music. I was going to say that Dick York was in one of my favourite episodes of The Twilight Zone, but he was on Bewitched, not Jeannie. My brain is very hurting and foggy today, and I'm having trouble typing, so let's leave it at that. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Cabaret (Louis Armstrong)

Image
Sorry for taking off without letting you know what was going on. I didn't quite know what was going on, myself.  On the face of it, I just didn't feel like I had anything to share with you, music-wise. I'd been scrambling for songs, and that didn't suit the spirit of this here blog. But I think my health issues and mental health issues were actually weighing me down so badly I just wanted to hide. My brother had routine dental surgery that went wrong in a way I didn't even know it could go wrong, and he is suffering tremendously. He doesn't complain, but you can see it in a person's face (the sunken eyes, etc) when they are in terrible pain. I know because I see it in the mirror pretty much every day. I am worried about my brother, but I'm also worried about myself, because the thing that happened to him actually clarified one of the health issues I've been experiencing (we have some of the same medical problems) and now I am scared out of my mind. F...

#SongoftheDay My Cherie Amour (Stevie Wonder)

Image
This song popped into my head while I was cleaning my apartment. Not sure why. I'm very frustrated and angry over the state of my apartment at the moment. If I get into it right now, I'm just going to get angrier and more frustrated. So maybe this is a story for another time. Maybe not. We shall see. Lots on the go, where housing is concerned. Very stressful. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Rag Doll (Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons)

Image
I took a whole bunch of painkillers this morning because my partner's real estate agent and some other people were coming in to prepare the house for sale (long story), but after they'd gone I decided all the spider webs in the rafters needed to be dealt with. It's something we've been putting off the entire time he's owned this house. So I duct taped two brooms together, I brought the ladder in from the garage, and I insisted that I was capable of swatting at spiders. Except that climbing a ladder and bending your head back is a very stupid thing to do for someone with chronic vertigo, among other conditions, and as soon as I was finished my self-assigned task, I had to lie down. On the couch. Because the couch was close. Actually, my partner doesn't own a couch. It's a loveseat. So my legs flop over the side. For a long time after that, I couldn't move at all. Despite the many medications I'd taken. I felt like a ragdoll. And I've had this s...

#SongoftheDay The Three Stooges Cartoon Intro

Image
Apparently my partner watched The Three Stooges growing up (as did I), so his sister bought him a box set of Three Stooges DVDs, which included the Three Stooges cartoon as well. He has no memory of the cartoon. I do, though I have no memory of when it was on TV. The classic Three Stooges episodes were broadcast Sunday afternoons when I was growing up, and my siblings would groan when I insisted on watching them. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Mickey Mouse Club Theme Song

Image
I've been thinking about childhood a lot lately. Last week, I found out one of my old school friends has a horrible form of cancer. She's going to receive treatment at the same cancer care facility where my partner was treated last summer. In fact, she's going to receive treatment in the same radiation department. When I told my partner all this, he said that his own cancer was Mickey Mouse compared to hers. I've got tears in my eyes just telling you this. I found it so generous of my partner to say this, because I was there with him, watching the pain he was in throughout, and the all-consuming fatigue. He forgets all this, now that it's in the past. I can't remember if I mentioned to you that he said, the other week, that he hadn't been in any pain during treatment. Well, I can tell you for certain that that isn't true. I sat with him, watching him cry because he was in so much pain. But he's probably put all that out of his mind for good reason....

#SongoftheDay Don't Worry Baby (The Beach Boys)

Image
Sometimes I tell you things I don't tell my partner. Maybe he knows without me having to say. I don't hide my emotions well. So maybe he already knows that I'm worried about him. I'm worried about him because the mouth sores he had during radiation last year have returned. His sense of taste, which had started to come back, is going away again. I am so, so worried that his cancer's coming back, but I don't want to make him worry. He still has to see his oncologist every three months. He's under a doctor's care. I am not a doctor. I'm just a worrier. But maybe he's fine. I hope he's fine. #SongoftheDay Days of Pearly Spencer (David McWilliams)

Image
Speaking of mishearing song lyrics, this track was playing on an episode of Heartbeat. I knew it vaguely, but I didn't know what it was called or who it was by. All I could really make out was "the days of curly center." Except those aren't actually the words, as I now realize. The strings are super-evocative, huh? #SongoftheDay On the Road Again (Canned Heat)

Image
When I'm home alone, I often listen to a 70s/80s/90s radio station. During their request hour, they played this song, which made me go... I could have sworn this was from the 60s. And my cursory internet search would suggest that it is. Not that I mind. I actually wish the radio station played 60s/70s/80s music. I could do without the 90s. No offense to the 90s, just that its music had a very different vibe. And I also object to the music of my high school years being played on an oldies station, but apparently those songs are now old. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Break on Through (The Doors)

Image
This story is from a few months ago, but I never got around to telling you because I was very ill at the time. So was my partner. We were too sick to do pretty much anything, for a time, so on the day I went to see my doctor (and came home and crashed) he went out to pick up my prescription. On the day he saw his doctor, I picked up his prescription.  So I'm barely functioning, I'm using my walker, and I go to enter this building... and my walker gets stuck in the door. It's an automatic door. So when I approached, it opened. But then there was a lip instead of the ground just being flat, and I was too weak to lift my walker to get it through fast enough, so by the time I got my walker halfway inside, the door closed on my walker, clamping so it wouldn't budge. I don't know why the door's sensors didn't activate. Shouldn't the sensors make sure people don't get crunched?  Anyway, now my walker's stuck in a door. So I take a step back, hoping to r...

#SongoftheDay I'm a Tiger (Lulu)

Image
Guess I'm getting all of our songs of the day from British TV shows now. I heard this one on an episode of Heartbeat and I immediately paused the PVR to look it up. I don't think I'd ever heard it before. Can't stop singing it now. Rawr. #SongoftheDay Together Wherever We Go (Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli)

There's a fly in the house, and it follows me from room to room like a faithful pup.  Put me in mind of this song. #SongoftheDay I Got You (James Brown)

Image
I haven't been taking my new prescription long enough to know whether it'll turn out to be the best option for managing my chronic illness, but you know what it's doing a miraculous job of managing? My mood! I'd been taking a different medication, previously, that took my depression and dragged it down deeper than it had been in ages. I woke up every morning thinking dark thoughts, seeing no point in living, and not wanting to get out of bed. The second day on these new meds, I woke up with this tune screaming through my mind, and I couldn't remember the last time I'd felt so happy.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Our Love Will See Us Through (Nina Simone)

Image
I heard this song on a TV show and it made me very emotional. My partner accompanied me to a medical appointment last week. It was the first time he'd done that. It was the first time anyone had. It was an appointment with a specialist, and it ended up lasting almost two hours. I knew I'd need his help taking notes, and also just remembering things. The chronic illness I have causes memory problems and cognitive impairments at times, and I can never predict when those times will be, exactly. So my partner came along (in fact he drove me there, which made me feel incredibly cared for. We usually take the subway to our medical appointments) and after the appointment he gave me chocolates he had bought for me in advance. I was so moved, and then I remembered the times I bought him teddy bears (he loves teddy bears) to give to him after his biopsies when his oncology team was trying to locate where, precisely, his cancer lived. I kept thanking him over and over, and he said I di...

#SongoftheDay Miserlou (Dick Dale and his Del-Tones)

Image
One of my "cool" aunts took me to see Pulp Fiction, which is kind of spectacular to imagine, considering I was only 14 when the movie was released. The movie came to mind yesterday when we listened to that Chuck Berry track, which was also featured in the film. I think I have a photograph somewhere of my aunt and I dancing like John Travolta and Uma Thurman. It never occured to me, when I was a child, that my mother's younger sisters weren't actually that much older than I was. They would have been teenagers when I was born, but they always seemed like adults to me. #SongoftheDay You Never Can Tell (Chuck Berry)

Image
My partner and I just did a crossword puzzle where one of the clues was "____ la vie." My brain went immediately to: Fuck My Life. But that's not the right answer! "C'est la vie," say the old folks. Anyway, now this song is stuck in my head. Which is fine. There are far worse songs in the world. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Blue Velvet (Bobby Vinton)

Image
My partner and I went to a barn sale (in large part because I wanted to find out what a barn sale was) (my partner kept saying to me, "But I don't want to buy a barn..." har-dee-har-har) and the barn turned out to be stocked with actual antiques as well as items that might not be old enough to be technically considered antiques, but were certainly old enough to be considered nostalgic and/or "before-my-time." The barn owner was selling a couple of juke boxes in stunning condition. When we approached one of them, it was playing Blue Velvet. I wanted to take my partner in my arms and dance him around the barn (I always end up leading if I don't consciously allow him to do so) but the guy selling the juke boxes came over to show us the internal workings, how the records played, how he'd repaired them to get them back in working order, etc. It was all very interesting (I love juke boxes), but the conversation wasn't condusive to romance. We left withou...

#SongoftheDay You've Made Me So Very Happy (Blood, Sweat and Tears)

Image
I can't remember if I've told you this story before, but talking about the movie Better Than Chocolate the other week brought it to mind: Many years ago, a TV network here in Canada would air Canadian short films late at night. It was a half-hour program, but the shorts would generally be under five minutes long.  The only one I remember was a comedic short about a butch lesbian who couldn't stop sweating, especially when she laid eyes on her crush. I specifically remember the character shoving maxi pads under her arms to keep the sweat in check. I have tried and tried to track down this short film, but with no luck. I'm guessing it was the 90s when I saw it, which would mean I saw this short before I saw Better Than Chocolate. I loved this short a) because it was funny and b) because it was a film featuring a lesbian but it wasn't a film about being a lesbian. It was a film about sweating buckets. (Particularly relatable now that I'm perimenopausal, but tha...
