#SongoftheDay Rama Lama Ding Dong (Sha Na Na)

Image
I don't always understand why YouTube pitches me the videos it does. After I'd watched the Kathleen Edwards track we featured yesterday, YouTube decided that I would definitely want to watch Sha Na Na. At first, I didn't think I could get on board. And then I spent the next hour watching Sha Na Na videos. So maybe YouTube knows me better than I know myself. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay I Can't Help Myself/Sugar Pie Honey Bunch (Four Tops)

Image
I've had a couple of horrible migraine days lately. My migraines are triggered largely by changes in the weather, but I don't think staying up half the night to clean the house and get some work done helped. The funny (not actually funny) thing is that I stayed up so late to work because I knew my partner would be driving into the nearest city to do a big grocery shop. He said he could do it himself because he didn't want to take me away from all the work I'm catching up on. He lives in the tiniest town. There's only one food store here and it is miniscule.  Because of his cancer treatments and us spending so much time at my place this summer, we haven't stocked up on food at his place in months. So I wanted to come. I wanted to buy tart shells.  Last weekend I bought local fruit from a farmer here in town (so, yes, there are alternatives to the tiny food store) and I'd prepared tart fillings with these beautiful fruits. I'd even gone so far as to mak...

#SongoftheDay Searchin' (The Coasters)

Yesterday I mentioned I've been watching old episodes of Northern Exposure to escape into nostalgia. This song was featured in the same episode as yesterday's song. I never get tired of The Coasters. #SongoftheDay Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow (The Rivingtons)

Image
This song was in a crossword we did last night. I think the clue Papa-Oom-___-___. We knew what the answer sounded like, but we didn't know how to spell the sound. We were way off. I think our first guess was Moa-Moa and then we tried something else. I wouldn't have guessed "Mow" because, to me, that looks like you're mowing the lawn. But, hey, we got there eventually. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Duke of Earl (Gene Chandler)

Image
My partner started singing this song the other day (I say "started" because he didn't finish) and I always try not to make any sudden movements when my partner sings. He is so shy about his singing voice and it happens so rarely that when he pipes up, I just keep doing what I was doing. Sometimes I'm singing and he joins in. In that case, I keep singing.  This time, I think we were doing a crossword. All I got out of him was "Duke, duke, duke, duke of Earl," but that's more singing than I usually hear out of his mouth. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Earth Angel (The Penguins)

Image
I've mentioned before that I watch a lot of RiffTrax.  Bridget and Mary Jo recently released their riff on a made-for-TV movie called Earth Angel and I bought it immediately. Why? Because I remember watching this film on television when it first aired! I actually liked it.  This was back in the 80s. Who among us didn't have questionable taste? #SongoftheDay Money --That's What I Want (Barrett Strong)

Image
With Easter on the horizon, I've been browsing the websites of fine chocolatiers and thinking, "Who the hell can afford this stuff?" Not me, that's for sure. But you should see some of this chocolate.  My mouth waters just looking at the pictures.  I want to buy fancy chocolates for my partner and myself, but they cost SO MUCH MONEY. I think a rich person should adopt me and give me chocolate.  Lots and lots of fancy chocolate. That's what I want. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Wishin' and Hopin' (Dionne Warwick)

Image
I enrolled in a free mindfulness course online, and one of the first exercises they ask you to do is take an everyday task like brushing your teeth and do it mindfully. I chose something else--I chose to be mindful every time I vacuum.  I picked vacuuming because I actually do that more often than I brush my teeth (life with cats) and I frequently have emotional breakdowns while I do it.  When I vacuum, I think. Too much.  Way too much. I imagine scenarios I can't cope with. I end up screaming and crying because of things that haven't happened and probably never will.   To keep my thoughts in check, I decided to be in the moment with my vacuuming: notice the sound and sensation of the machine, watch what it's picking up, seek out all those little bits of kitty litter. It hasn't gone as smoothly as I'd hoped.  My brain still takes over.  I think. I panic. I cry. So I've started singing while I vacuum.  That seems to be the only way to keep myself ...

#SongoftheDay You Keep Me Hangin' On (Diana Ross and the Supremes)

Image
I know how horrible this sounds, but this song popped into my head while I was petting my cat today. This little guy is reaching the end of his life. I've mentioned before that I don't know what to do. Every day I ask myself: what am I going to do about this cat? Every day the same answer: I don't know.  Soon enough, that becomes the answer.  The reason I'm so direct is that I want other pet owners who are going through this or have experienced it in the past to know it's not just them. Some people will probably think I'm the worst person in the world for having thoughts like "my life would be so much easier if he died in his sleep," but I have to think it's natural to have those thoughts and feelings.  I don't want my cat to suffer. I don't want to suffer, watching him suffer. But is it time to take action?  Clearly, I don't know. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest th...

#SongoftheDay Teenager in Love (Dion and the Belmonts)

Image
I made a playlist of fun songs to listen to while washing the dishes, and this tune topped the list.  I hadn't heard it in decades, but I just about melted when it came on. There are times when being perimenopausal in love feels a lot like being a teenager. Therapy helps. 😂 If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Yakety Yak (The Coasters)

I put up a song by The Coasters just a couple days ago but, honestly, hardly anyone clicked on that post. So here they are again with another song I loved, as a child. #SongoftheDay Charlie Brown (The Coasters)

Image
I saw the words "Charlie Brown" in a book I was reading, and immediately pulled up this song. As soon as it came on, my partner started singing along. If you've been keeping track of my posts, you'll know that it is extremely difficult to get my partner singing. Sometimes he will speak the lyrics, but I've never actually heard him break out in song and really go with it the way he did with this one. I can understand why, though: it's so much fun and so nostalgic. I certainly remember listening to it when I was growing up. He asked me, "Is this The Coasters?" and I said yes--I only knew the answer because it was right in front of me. Then he reminded me that there was a segment of the Frasier episode we watched yesterday called (you guessed it) The Coasters. It was the episode called Motor Skills, in which Niles and Frasier flunk out of an auto repair course. They try to coast, but they can't even manage that. If you're wondering how you can s...

#SongoftheDay Love Potion No. 9 (The Clovers)

Image
The other day, my partner and I were talking about how comforting it was when there were DJs who stayed on the radio all night long. I'm not sure if there are any/many remaining radio shows that are hosted through the witching hours. I've written before about feeling comforted by these voices when I moved to my first apartment and didn't even have a TV.  I listened to the radio all night. The DJs made me feel so much less lonely. I come from a big family, so suddenly living by myself was really strange. As my partner and I were having this discussion, he asked me, "Have you ever seen American Graffiti?"  I laughed and said, "Yes!" because I knew what was coming. He asked, "Remember that scene with Wolfman Jack?" I said, "Oh my gosh, that's exactly what I was thinking of!" And it's true. While we were discussing DJs working throughout the night, I was thinking of exactly that scene in exactly that movie. We're listening to ...

#SongoftheDay Da Doo Ron Ron (The Crystals)

Image
I hadn't thought about this song in years, and then it showed up in a crossword and the memories came flooding back. When I was in elementary school, my class sang this song at our year-end concert. For some reason, my friends and I thought it would be badass af if we all said a different name instead of Bill. Except we couldn't decide which name we'd say. Some of my friends wanted to say Chuck. Some wanted to say Bob. So we combined both names into the never-before-heard name of Chob. At the school concert, we all shouted out "Somebody told me that his name was CHOB!" and we thought we'd get in big trouble for being so naughty. I don't think anyone in the audience noticed. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Mr. Lee (The Bobbettes)

Image
Another crossword-inspired song of the day, here. The clue was: 1957 Bobbettes song that begins "One, two three..." Well, we didn't get this one. As soon as I looked it up on YouTube I was like, "Oh, of course!" In case I haven't mentioned this lately, doo-wop is one of my all-time favourite music genres.  But this one isn't a tune I could pull out of my brain when I needed it. #SongoftheDay In the Still of the Night (The Five Satins)

Image
I have practically no attention span, which is why I don't watch a lot of movies--they're too long. I can't concentrate on one story for more than an hour (or two... or three... or The Irishman). But the other day, my partner and I were so zonked we spent the entire afternoon staring at the TV. Dirty Dancing is one of the movies we watched--a film I've seen once as an adult and 387 times as a youth.  The soundtrack fills me with nostalgia. Here's one of the (many) songs that reminds me of sleepovers with my cousins, or school friends, because we watched Dirty Dancing over and over on VHS. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Mama Said (The Shirelles)

Image
As you (possibly) know, I schedule these posts in advance so they'll get to you at a consistent hour every day.  When I'm mired in depression, it's really important to me that things be consistent.  So here I am, being consistent. But the reason I mention scheduling in advance is that I'm writing this post on "Blue Monday," the saddest day of the year--although I once heart that there's no actual scientific basis to the assignation. You can be blue any goddamn day you like, friends. All the power to you. I must admit, though, I had no idea it was Blue Monday until this evening... after my partner and I both got home to tell each other about our terrible, terrible days. He's super-bummed, and his sadness is making me sad. On top of that, my perimenopausal rage is going full tilt. Watch out! Whoa. I read an article that said perimenopause can last 10-13 years. The next decade is not going to be fun for anyone around me. If you're wondering h...

#SongoftheDay He's a Rebel (The Crystals)

Image
This song popped into my head the other day. I started singing it, but I couldn't remember the words, so I was kind of singing, "He's a rebel and I don't know how this song goes..." My partner laughed and called me Frasier, because the night before, I'd played him one of my (many) favourite Frasier episodes: Look Before You Leap . It's the leap year episode, where Frasier encourages everyone to get out of their comfort zone and then butchers Buttons and Bows during a PBS pledge drive. I'm sure you remember it well. That episode contains my absolute favourite line in the entire series: Let's all go to a taco show! Sure there are wittier and cleverer lines, but that one cracks me up so hard every time I watch the episode that it's earned #1 spot in my book. By the way, after I'd performed my spotty rendition of He's a Rebel, I said to my partner, "Well, do YOU know the words?" He's too shy to sing, but he looked me...

#SongoftheDay You Can't Hurry Love (The Supremes)

My mama never said anything of the sort. My mother married at 18. My grandmother married at 16. Neither remarried after their husbands died. Try being 40 and single in a family like that. #SongoftheDay Please Mr. Postman (Marvelettes)

Image
I spent Sunday afternoon listening to doo-wop music with my partner. This is one of my many, many favourites--it's the first that comes to mind when I think doo-wop. Spending time together still feels magical, to me, even though there's a lot of emotion at the moment. Maybe the time feels magical because the (negative) emotions aren't mine (finally!). The more support my partner needs, the more I feel able to rise to the occasion and be that supportive, compassionate person I never thought I could be. Sunday was amazing. A major shitstorm happened last week, and Sunday was the first day my partner wasn't breaking down in tears. We went for a lovely walk, came home, I got some work done while he did the crossword, and we listened to doo-wop music. Just like a Sunday in the movies. It still feels like fairy gold. Life can't possibly feel this good forever. I'm just waiting for everything to fall apart and my life to revert to its former misery. I'll neve...
