#SongoftheDay I'm Getting Sentimental Over You (Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra)

Image
I've been feeling so sick the past few days that I've barely had the energy to watch TV--and that's saying something. Watching TV isn't exactly a gruelling task. But one of my meds has been making me sick to my stomach, and after days of this I am just so weak. It's times like this when I realize how much my partner does to take care of me and to take care of our surroundings when I'm unwell. I'm noticing how much he does because he's not here. He's at his house; I'm at my place. And my place is a mess because I don't have the energy to clean it properly. Now I'm realizing that usually, when I'm sick, he does the dishes, he dries them and puts them away so we don't have a kitchen full of dirty dishes. Normally when I'm sick to my stomach, he runs to the bathroom with me and holds my hair. If my hair is pulled back, he pets my head because he says he doesn't know what else to do. But clearly he does know what to do, beca...

#SongoftheDay I've Got No Strings (The Andrews Sisters, Glenn Miller Orchestra)

Image
I woke up with this song in my head, which bothered me deeply because I would say I do have strings and I am grateful for those strings. But I also woke up full of anxiety because my partner wants to move again, and moving is such a big thing. It's probably a smart decision. We never put down roots in the small town where he bought a house, and we kind of never wanted to. Moving here was a snap decision, and right away there were so many things where we were like... oh, this was a big mistake. Not that it's been all bad. But there are just so many reasons to leave, not the least of which is lack of access to sufficient healthcare. Also, it's expensive. Also, transit is extremely limited. Also, also, also... When I'm anxious, I am not at my best. But what I've realized this time around that I didn't realize the last time my partner wanted to move is that he is anxious too. None of this is easy or comfortable for him. We are experiencing a lot of the same emotio...

#SongoftheDay Java Jive (The Ink Spots)

Image
I'm sitting here doing something I never in my life imagined myself doing. I'm drinking decaf. When I was younger, I used to wonder why decaf even existed. If you want coffee, just drink coffee! For real, dude! Now that I'm old(er) and chronically ill, I get decaf. I get it. Throughout my twenties and most of my thirties, I was addicted to coffee. If I didn't drink it, I got terrible headaches. I tried to quit on many occassions, but I just couldn't. Not even for a day. I'd be in so much pain from the withdrawal, so I'd go back. Coffee had me in its grips. As I approached 40, my heart started acting up. My sister insisted on taking me to the emergency room. There was nothing wrong with me, which felt even scarier than if there had been something wrong with me. Because if I was fine, why was I having heart palpitations? I quit cold turkey and it stuck. (My aunt later informed me that she had heart palpilations during perimenopause. At the time, I thoug...

#SongoftheDay By the Light of the Silvery Moon (Fats Waller)

Image
My partner doesn't sing. But he sang this song to me the other night, and it was just the sweetest thing. He'd been talking about Mitch Miller and "follow the bouncing ball" singalongs that his parents--both vocalists--loved, and I was asking what kind of songs his parents liked, and he mentioned this one. I thought I'd come here and tell you, but of course I forgot what the song was five seconds later, so I asked my partner, "What was that song you just mentioned?" And instead of just reciting the lyrics, as he'd done before, he sang to me.  He doesn't like his singing voice, and he's very shy about sharing it--even with me, even though I sing at him constantly--so when he does sing, I feel like he's sharing a very special part of himself. So sweet.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your lo...

#SongoftheDay Cow Cow Boogie (Dorothy Dandridge)

Image
I've been falling down some fascinating YouTube rabbit holes lately, and landing on songs I've never heard of. Like this one. The line about "local weed" reminded me of my partner's best friend, who helps out people in her neighbourhood in small but meaningful ways. An old man she knows wanted to grow his own medicinal marijuana (it is legal to do so in our juristiction) but he lived in a small apartment with no balcony, and didn't think he could manage it. You know that old real estate rule about buying the worst house on the best street? That's my partner's best friend's house. It is tiny, but it's got a bit of a yard. So she offered to grow cannabis for this old man, and she did and it worked out just fine. Until the day she walked into her yard to find some fancy-ass woman pulling the plants up by their roots. She was like ummm who the hell are you and why are you destroying my garden? Turned out the fancy-ass woman was a real estate ...

#SongoftheDay Love Me or Leave Me (Billie Holiday)

Image
My partner and I were just watching Land Girls (I've seen it before, but it's much more melodramatic than I remember) and there was a great Billie Holiday song playing in the background of one scene. It wasn't this song. I don't know what song it was. I convinced myself I would remember the lyrics, even though I never remember anything. Sure enough, I don't remember even a single word. But this is a good song, so let's listen to it! If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Show Me the Way to Go Home (The Andrews Sisters)

Image
Okay, so I finally went to the emergency room. My partner took me there. We arrived at 9 at night. We left at 3 in the morning. It was exhausting and at the end of it, all I know is that I'm not likely to die right this second. There actually weren't too many patients waiting to be seen, and because it was the middle of the night there were a fair number of young children and babies. I have warm feelings toward parents who can't wait until the doctor's office opens to find out if their child's fever is life-threatening. We shared a waiting room with a mom and her toddler, who looked to be about my granddaughter's age (did I mention that I have a granddaughter now?) and who was very nearly as cute as my granddaughter--which is really saying something, because my granddaughter is officially the most adorable kid on the planet. Around two in the morning, the child in the ER waiting room said to his mother, "Wan go home." I was thinking, "I...

#SongoftheDay Theme from "Laura" (Morton Gould and his Orchestra, Max Pollikoff violin)

Image
People leave all sorts of things in the laundry room of my apartment building. If one tenant doesn't want or need something, they leave it there for other tenants to take. Today it was cat food. One time I found an entire watermelon down there. A couple weeks ago, it was DVDs. New DVDs of old movies. One of those movies was the 1944 film noir classic, "Laura." I love films of that era, but I'd never seen this particular one. Neither had my partner, so we watched it the other night. We both enjoyed it. Kept us guessing, since it's a murder mystery. Did its job. And it did its job in only an hour and twenty-eight minutes. I think that's one reason I like old movies. They tend to be shorter than the films of today. I've got menopause brain and pain brain. I do not have much of an attention span. My partner used to tell me I could probably build up my attention span, if I worked at it. Then he started cancer treatment. Now he understands the no attenti...

#SongoftheDay I'll Walk Beside You (Paul Robeson)

Image
I can't remember how we got on the topic, but my partner mentioned the other day that he always wished he had a deeper voice.  He thinks his voice is too high. I'd never really thought about his voice. I just like it because it's his, high or low. Makes sense that one of his favourite voices to listen to is Paul Robeson's.  You don't get much deeper than this! #SongoftheDay God Bless the Child (Billie Holiday)

Image
I did not grow up listening to jazz. The first time I ever heard this song, it was performed by Lisa Simpson on the Simpsons Sing the Blues album, which I owned on cassette tape. Now, my partner lives in a neighbourhood where there are always buskers performing. We see the same few musicians every day, and I'm pretty familiar with their repertoire. When I was out yesterday, I walked by a vocalist I'd never heard before. She was singing a gorgeous rendition of this tune. As her voice filled my ears, I looked up and saw a child... wearing a Simpsons T-shirt. Now, that was very common in the early 90s, but most days I do not see anyone wearing Simpsons gear. I thought it was so funny that I was hearing this song I associated with little Lisa and seeing this kid wearing a Simpsons top. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people ...

#SongoftheDay Nature Boy (Nat King Cole)

I loved this song when I was a teenager. I found it incredibly enchanting. The "greatest thing" lyrics found their way into my head today. #SongoftheDay Easter Parade (Judy Garland and Fred Astaire)

Image
Until Covid came along, I never understood why some people celebrate the hell out of holidays. Of course, different people have different reasons for celebrating--religious observances obviously hold more weight if you're actually religious--but now that there's so little to do and look forward to (aside from the pleasures of work and waking up beside someone I adore), celebrating anything appeals to me greatly. I won't even tell you how much money I spent on chocolate. My partner tells me that, when he was growing up, Easter was a big deal. Everyone in his family got all new clothes for Easter.  Springtime. New beginnings.  I, too, received new clothes at Easter: my Welsh grandmother always bought my sister and I matching dresses and, yes, an Easter bonnet.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Are you Happy In Your Work? (Mary Beth Hughes)

Image
I've mentioned before that " I Accuse My Parents " is one of my favourite movies riffed on Mystery Science Theater 3000 . Ever since I cancelled my cable, I've been watching it a lot.  That means I've heard this song A LOT a lot, since it gets lip-synched in a host segment.   I always suspected there was more to the number than was aired in the MST3k episode, and here's proof! This is the extended version. Enjoy! On a personal note, I hope you're happy... in your work... and you're in love! #SongoftheDay I Don't Want to Set the World On Fire (The Ink Spots)

Image
Every time I tell this story, I expect people to laugh. In my mind, it's a funny story. Everybody else reacts like I must be traumatized by the event. But I'm not! Much worse things than this have happened in my life.  So! It was sometime in the 90s--1993, let's say--and I was making dinner for my family. I had a pot of water boiling on the stove, but I hadn't grabbed the pasta out of the cupboard yet. Spaghetti was kept in that really high cupboard over the stove, and I've always been super short, so I had to stand on my tippy-toes to reach. Remember, this was the 90s: a time when many of us wore oversized T-shirts tucked into our loose-fitting black jeans and then pulled out a touch so they were baggy at the front. When I reached up to grab the pasta, my T-shirt landed on the burner. Suddenly, I was on fire. This is the part of the story where people are like "Oh my God! You poor thing!" I guess it was memorable, since I remember it (unlike so many othe...

#SongoftheDay All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth (The Platters)

This was my mother's favourite Christmas song, as a child. The original is much more nostalgic, but also pretty annoying. I like The Platters, so we're listening to them. #SongoftheDay Chattanooga Choo Choo (The Nicholas Brothers and Dorothy Dandridge)

Image
Yes, we have more tap dancing today! And a tune I absolutely adore!  Last week, one of the crosswords my partner and I worked on had the clue: The Nicholas Brothers, _____ and Harold. It drove me crazy that I didn't know the answer.  I'd posted a number on this blog featuring Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers, but I didn't know their names. The answer is: Fayard. Not a name I'd ever have guessed. Enjoy this footage from 1941. Isn't Dorothy Dandrige a looker? I love the way her dress gleams when she moves. And that voice! *swoons* If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Jumpin' Jive (Cab Calloway)

Image
It's been a while since we've had a dance break, and it's been a while since we've seen Cab Calloway, so let's enjoy both today with this scene from the 1943 film Stormy Weather. The Nicholas Brothers are our tap stars (I love the part toward the end with the stairs and the slides). #SongoftheDay Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy (Dinah Shore)

Image
I remember this song being in a commercial for Cool Whip or something--maybe in the 80s or 90s? That's the first time I recall hearing it. I didn't know what shoo fly pie or apple pan dowdy were, at the time, and even now I only know from looking them up. Not common desserts, round these parts. #SongoftheDay Black and White (Hazel Scott)

Image
This clip of Hazel Scott playing TWO pianos is worth a watch and listen. It's from a 1943 Mae West film called The Heat's On. I feel I should warn you about a trumpet-playing puppet, in case you've got a phobia of creepy dolls. Also, be on the lookout for an enthusiastic old white dude trying (unsuccessfully) to snap his fingers. #SongoftheDay Salty Dog Blues (Mississippi John Hurt)

Image
Yesterday we listened to a Cat Power cover--as track called "Salty Dog." But a cover of what? A cover of whom? I did some digging (well, I looked at the wikipedia page for the album) & the song "Salty Dog" is listed as Traditional. However, the original artist is listed as Papa Charlie Jackson, a popular Blues artist and banjo player of the 1920s. While Papa Charlie Jackson's performances of Salty Dog Blues do exist on YouTube, the ones I listened to sounded degraded due to age, which made them difficult for me to hear. Instead, I chose a rendition by Mississippi John Hurt. I can't say for sure how this tune morphed into the children's song I enjoyed in the 80s, but I'm satisfied with my investigative work. Hope you've enjoyed the journey! If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly peo...
