#SongoftheDay I Sing the Body Electric (62nd Annual Grammy Awards Finale)

Image
I actually can't stand this song, even though I loved Fame (the movie AND the TV show) back in the 80s. I attended a very Fame-like high school as a teenager, and we sang this as a choral number one year. I love singing, and I usually enjoyed any song we sang just because of the community feeling you get when you're singing with a hundred other people, but this number didn't do it for me. I still hate it. But I chose it as our song of the day because last week I published the 21st installment in my "Sexy Surprises" series of 6-story erotic anthologies. This book is called " Good Vibes, Sexy Surprises " and all the stories feature vibrators. And that made me think of this song. So there's your connection. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Pa...

#SongoftheDay The Maid on the Shore (Stan Rogers)

Image
I've mentioned before that I'm kind of obsessed with a show called Mayday. It's about plane crashes, in case you've never seen it. The episode I just watched told the story of the plane crash that killed this Canadian folk musician, Stan Rogers. I didn't recognize the name, so I looked him up on Youtube. As soon as I heard his voice I was like ohhhhhh okay I do know him after all. What a sad loss to music.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely! #SongoftheDay It Burns Inside (Johnny Braff)

Image
I hope you've had a good week while I've been off. The holidays went as well as they could, all things considered.  A family friend died a few days before Christmas, so my thoughts have been with his widow and his children. This is a tough time, and the constant spectre of death has certainly put a damper on the holiday season. Since our friend was from Guyana, I've selected a classic popular Guyanese tune to play in his memory. Take care.  Love, love, love. #SongoftheDay Somewhere Out There (Linda Ronstadt & James Ingram)

Image
If you remember the 80s as clearly as I do, you'll recall that this gem comes from the animated feature An American Tail.  I remember it like it was yesterday: seeing this movie at the Cedarbrae Cinemas, and then stopping in at Beaver Lumber to pick up nails or drywall or both, maybe.  I always loved shopping at Beaver Lumber because they stocked their lumber indoors, so the whole store smelled like wood.   I have a soft spot for this song, too, because I was in a longterm relationship that was long-distance. Whenever I missed my girlfriend, she'd say we're just like the two little mice looking up at the moon. And, since we're talking about night skies, I'll be sure to mention that Mars is very visible right now.  If you haven't already, I would recommend looking up when it's dark out.  Go outside first, or you'll just be looking at your ceiling. My partner and I have gone out every night this week to look for Mars. There's only one night we've m...

#SongoftheDay Unchained Melody (The Righteous Brothers)

Image
I suppose I started something of a love letter to my partner in yesterday's post. Today I'll continue in that vein by telling you about New Year's Eve. My partner had bought us concert tickets for the evening, but when we got home I wanted to dance with him. This is the song he chose.  He didn't even have to think about it. On Easter Sunday, as we were washing dishes, he turned on the stereo. This is the first song that came on. In my mind, it meant we had to dance. So we rocked together in the kitchen, clinging to one another, and it felt so lovely and perfect and romantic. #SongoftheDay J'envoie valser (Oivia Ruiz)

Image
Believe it or not, I've never held myself in high regard. You might think that, in order to be a writer and market my work and all that, I must have incredible self-confidence. I don't. I've always thought I'm bad at everything and I'm not worth much. This is something I managed to convince myself a long time ago, and it wasn't hard to do. I know I shouldn't allow my self-worth to be determined by other people, but there's a part of me that's still as vulnerable as the young girls in the audience of this video. There's a part of me that needs to be shown I have value. My partner and I are not young people. We have histories, past lives, paths we've taken. When we got together, my partner had to make a choice: he could stay in his previous situation or build a life with me. If he'd stayed where he was, he would come into money. Big money. Like, a million dollars or more. He wouldn't have to do anything to "earn" it; thi...

#SongoftheDay Banks of the Roses (The Barra MacNeils)

Image
When I was a kid, we had neighbours who'd clearly taken a wrong turn and accidentally bought a house in our ("bad") area. They moved to the city from... I don't know where... somewhere else, at any rate, so they obviously weren't aware that our neighbourhood was one to be avoided. And, really, they had more than enough money to move elsewhere. But they didn't.  They lived around the corner from us for many years. They could easily have been snobs, given that they had more money than everyone else on the block put together, but they were super-nice. I remember one time my dad knocked on their door and asked if they could spot him some "gas money" (which he immediately spent on booze), but they weren't even judgey about stuff like that. They were so nice that the dad of the family drove us kids to school alongside his own children. It couldn't be called a carpool, because carpools rotate drivers. He just drove us. Every day. Even when I gra...

#SongoftheDay I Talk to the Trees (Robert Goulet)

Image
I'm pretty sure I told you Beetlejuice was my favourite movie when I was a kid. I can't remember if I also mentioned that my partner saw Beetlejuice for the first time just a couple weeks ago. His favourite thing about the whole movie was that Robert Goulet was in it. As for this song in particular, it was featured in the book of sheet music from musicals of the 1950s I had as a teen. I used to play it on the piano all the time. Now I can't play piano at all--I've forgotten how. Plus, my voice is shot, so I can't even sing it particularly well. Dude, aging sucks so hard. (p.s. My favourite Robert Goulet line is from The Simpsons: "Vera said that?!") (p.p.s. Can you believe how young he is on this album cover?) #SongoftheDay Vincent (Don McLean)

Image
Yesterday's post was To Be Continued, although I didn't tell you at the time. We listened to Roberta Flack's Killing Me Softly With His Song yesterday, as you'll recall. I mentioned asking my partner who the song was about. He knew right away: Don McLean. But that's not where the story ends. He dug his iPod out of his bag and pulled up this song, which I'd always thought of Starry, Starry Night. Nope. It's called Vincent. Because it's about Vincent Van Gogh. Which, I guess, is kind of obvious if you actually listen to the words. I don't always listen to the words. I don't always listen. But I'm trying. Getting better all the time. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Take Care of Someone Who Loves You (Smith & Smith)

Image
My partner is currently reading my copy of Margaret Laurence's The Diviners . I read that book twenty years ago, so there's very little I remember about it. I just flipped through it quickly, spotted the name Morag, and immediately thought of Smith & Smith Comedy Mill.  I think that's what the show was called.  Actually, I think it changed names.  It was a Canadian sketch/variety show hosted by a married couple. I'm pretty sure the wife was Morag. I could be wrong about any or all of my reminiscences, but I seem to recall them closing out every episode by singing this song. I'm not sure why, but it's stuck with me all these years. I guess it's just a promising sentiment. #SongoftheDay The Rose (Bette Midler)

Image
In my Depression Handbook for Writers, I've got a section called "Getting out of Your Comfort Zone" and I'm pretty sure the first paragraph just says: Nooooooooo! Because that's how I feel about getting out of my comfort zone. The older I get, the more anxieties I experience. But, at the same time, I know it needs to be done.  Especially when I'm becoming dangerously isolated. My best friend told me to look for a meditation group and go. I didn't look.  That did not sound like a thing I would ever do. The only place I go is the library. I am comfortable at the library. Well, one day at the library I spotted a poster for a meditation class. At the library. And it was free. Okay, clearly this was meant to be.  I really had no reason not to go. It wasn't that far out of my comfort zone--it was at the library, for starters. So I went, and you know what? I didn't even feel anxious about it. I had a few worries: what if we had to talk about wh...

#SongoftheDay Perfect Day (Lou Reed)

Image
I met up with my former girlfriend for the first time since April. It was good to see her. She didn't seem as sad as she'd been the last time. In fact, it felt like catching up with an old friend. The heavy emotions were gone. Getting dumped is rough, but I think we underestimate the melancholy that goes along with being the one who ends the relationship--especially when we still care about the person we're breaking up with. We broke up last year, on Halloween of all days--Gay Christmas! How traumatic. The next day, I walked around the city for, gosh, five hours at least. Seeing as it was November 1st, I popped into every grocery store and pharmacy I walked by to check if they had any really good clearance prices on their Halloween candy (not really, but I ended up buying a huge box of mini bags of Cheetos anyway). I found myself under a bridge--a heavily-trafficked underpass, so loud with traffic noise that you hardly feel human when you're down there. I starte...

#SongoftheDay Death and the Lady (The Dovetail Trio)

Image
I'm obsessed with "Death and the Maiden" imagery: a skeleton and a beautiful young woman. Sometimes they're talking. Sometimes they're kissing. Sometimes they're fucking. You never know what they'll get up to, that raunchy pair. It's imagery I faintly recall studying when I took art history courses in university.  I think it's got me in its grips at this stage because midlife feels like a confrontation between youth and mortality. I don't feel like a middle-aged person. I feel like a young person staring death in the face. This gorgeous ballad dates back to the 15th century, from what I gather. Maybe even earlier than that.  The recording isn't that old, obviously--in fact, it appears on an album called Bold Champions , which was just released a few months back. Isn't it amazing when an old song can continue to speak to the human experience hundreds of years after it was written? Music is magic. If you're wondering how yo...
