#SongoftheDay Walking On The Moon (The Police)

Image
When I was a kid, my favourite cousin lived in a small(ish) town. One March Break, my aunt invited me and my sister to stay over for the whole week, and she signed us and my cousin up for art camp. I loved art and I loved my cousin, so this was the best thing ever. One of our art instructors one day said to another, "I love The Police." Except I didn't know The Police was capitalized in her sentence. I thought she was saying, "I love the police." Which seemed very odd to me, because she dressed like a punk, in a leather jacket and everything. Punks and police didn't go together, in my mind. Not sure how long it took me to realize she was talking about a band. Could be minutes, could be years. My memory is kinda sketchy. But every time I hear a song by The Police, I think of that art instructor. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or c...

#SongoftheDay Message in a Bottle (The Police)

My partner was telling me about a news story he came across where someone in Newfoundland came across a soccer ball that had floated there all the way from a school in Nunavut. Immediately made me think of this song. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. I'm also an  Amazon Influencer,  so hopefully I can make a little pocket change when you buy stuff by clicking through  my affiliate links . I also recommend subscribing to my newsletter. #SongoftheDay Baby Come Back (The Equals)

Image
I've missed you. Boy, have I missed you! As I mentioned before taking my leave a few weeks ago, my partner and I have been extremely ill. We're still not over it, but we're better than we were.  Throughout most of this illness, we could not do anything. I spent countless days doing nothing but sleeping, waking up in a coughing fit, staring out the window, and then falling back asleep. We were so sick that, for a solid two weeks, we only left the house to go to doctors' appointments and get medicine. And when we got back from our appointments, we immediately crashed. What was wrong with us? I was sure we had pneumonia, but the X-rays say X. So some sort of severe chest infection. I truly thought that one or both of us would be admitted to hospital--that's how serious it was. But we took care of one another. I picked up his prescriptions, he picked up mine.  All the while, I missed you. I missed sharing music and memories with you. I missed being able to sing! I usu...

#SongoftheDay You're Wondering Now (Andy & Joey)

Image
I think I mentioned, last week, that I've been having awful sinus pressure/pain (in addition to my usual batch of awful chronic pain symptoms). I'm really fortunate that I don't generally get a lot of photosensitivity with the migraines that plague me. I'm aware that most migraine sufferers are super-super-sensitive to light. Well, I guess this sinus thing wants to show me what it's like on the other side, because I've been experiencing horrible photosensitivity since last week. My eyes hurt all the time, but it's worse when it's light out. My computer screen is nearly impossible to look at. I've got the brightness on the lowest setting right now (not counting the setting where the screen just goes black) and I still feel like I'm being stabbed in both eyes. The BBC murder mystery show Death in Paradise has been my constant companion for the past week. I listen to it with my eyes closed, since I can't stand to look at my screen. My partn...

#SongoftheDay Sweat A La La La La Long (Inner Circle)

Image
I woke up in a pool of sweat at three in the morning. This is not unusual, but last night's sweat far exceeded the amount of sweat I've sweated on previous occasions. The sheets felt wet beneath me. I could not go back to sleep on them. Fortunately, there is a spare bedroom at my partner's house. Unfortunately, I feel guilty when I use it. I feel bad for leaving him alone in bed. But I really had no choice last night. The sheets were gross. I had to go. After I'd spent the rest of the night in the cool, crisp, DRY sheets of the spare room, I heard my partner starting his day. I got up and apologized for abandoning him. He had no idea what I was talking about. He didn't realize I'd left the bed. Okay, so maybe next time I soak the sheets with sweat, I won't worry so much about heading into the spare room. By the way, it's wild writing to you about perimenopausal night sweats while listening to a song that came out when I was in my early teens. I...

#SongoftheDay Watching the Detectives (Elvis Costello)

Image
I'm lying on my bed as I write this post.  I woke up feeling ill, which is not unusual. I spend half my life barely able to crawl out of bed. My partner has four medical appointments today, but he insisted he doesn't need me there for any of them. He said he'd call if he needed anything.  We spent yesterday at the hospital, meeting with various oncology professionals. It was an exhausting day. So many waiting rooms. So much waiting.  And the day never ends when we get home. That's when I have to figure out what to make for dinner even though I just want to collapse in a heap. So I've been lying here for two hours, hoping for my own pain to subside, watching true crime shows on my laptop, and feeling guilty for not doing all the work I've got to do. And the laundry! The laundry has been building up for weeks, but my health and mobility have been so poor that I haven't had the strength to carry it down to the laundry room in my building. I wish somebody wo...

#SongoftheDay Vote For Me (The Specials)

Image
There's an election today, here in Canada, so we're listening to this recent track from The Specials. (Recent compared to Ghost Town.) If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely! I'm also an  Amazon Influencer,  so hopefully I can make a little pocket change when you buy stuff by clicking through  my affiliate links . But you don't HAVE to do any of that. I'm very happy to get a daily visit from you, so just keep coming back. Oh, and I also recommend hitting the "Subscribe" button at the top of the page so you won't miss a song! See you tomorrow! #SongoftheDay Twice My Age (Shabba Ranks ft. Krystal)

Image
I woke up with this song in my head, and it occurred to me that when I was a teenager I would hear this song and go, "haha, nearly TWICE my age? I'm in love with a man nearly THREE TIMES my age!" Now I'm thinking gosh, a man three times my age would be over 120. The older you get, the older twice your age gets. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. #SongoftheDay Waiting in Vain (Bob Marley and the Wailers)

Image
You know by now that I schedule these posts in advance.  Well, today is Father's Day.  My partner is a father. He woke up this morning like a kid at Christmas. He was so excited that he might hear from his kids. As the day has progressed, he's become increasingly sullen. He doesn't need to tell me why. He's waiting for the phone to ring.  He hasn't left the house.  His kids haven't called.  They're not really talking to him right now, and I'm a big part of that. It's not easy being an evil stepmother, that's for sure.  I bought my partner some treats for today, but it's not the same.  I'm not his kid. There's nothing I can do, in this situation, to make him feel better. He just wants to talk to his kids. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. ...

#SongoftheDay Don't Worry Be Happy (Bobby McFerrin)

Image
When I was a kid, I bought a bag of worry dolls at the Canadian National Exhibition. The theory is you put these tiny dolls under your pillow at night, and they take away your worries.  Throughout my childhood and teenage years, I slept with them under my pillow every night. A couple weeks ago, I was cleaning out the broom closet at my apartment. On the shelf in there, I found a little wooden box I didn't recognize.  The box contained worry dolls, but not the ones from my childhood. Different worry dolls, along with a little instruction sheet specifying that they were Guatemalan worry dolls.  I don't remember ever seeing this little wooden box before, but one of my sisters has spent a lot of time in Guatemala, so I'm assuming she gave it to me?  I don't know.  I have no memory of this. My partner's got a lot of stress, so when I was assembling a gift bag of odds and ends to give him for his birthday, I put the worry dolls in there.  He'd never heard of such...

#SongoftheDay Murder She Wrote (Chaka Demus and Pliers)

Image
Yesterday I mentioned listening to music in my cousin's backyard. Today we've got sunshine once more, and I'm still feeling nostalgic, so here's another track we listened to back in the day. (Murder She Wrote is also, to this day, my mother's favourite show. It's on every weeknight at seven, and she watches it every day on TV. She also owns the entire series on DVD.) If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Poco Man Jam (Gregory Peck)

Image
Weird, when a song you haven't heard in 30 years pops into your head seemingly out of the blue.  I am an introspective type person, so I always try to figure out why I have a certain song in my head.  It took a few days to figure this one out. Last week, my partner and I walked by a big rabbit hutch in a neighbour's yard.  In the back of my head, it must have brought me back to the rabbit hutch in my cousin's yard.  I remember hanging out in her backyard on sunny days like today, listening to her music (mostly reggae and hip-hop), and trying out the dance moves of the day.  Or just talking, or reading, or doing nothing much. This song is way up there on the soundtrack of that time of my life. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay A Man Needs A Maid (Reggaddiction ft. Jimmy Reid)

Image
Tonight is the night--it's the 15th Annual Bob Marley Birthday Tribute in support of the Parkdale Community Food Bank .   Reggaddiction is on the lineup, and when I went to YouTube to pull a video of theirs so we could listen to it today, I couldn't believe my eyes. They did a reggae dub of this Neil Young song--A Man Needs A Maid. Why is that significant? Because I wrote a book called A Man Needs A Maid !  It's about a lonely widower who falls in love with his maid.  Lucky for him, she falls back. But their courting is not without its tribulations, or it wouldn't be much of a book, would it? Find out more on my Donuts and Desires blog .  I really love this song. The concert is online this year, and it looks to be FREE, but you can make a donation on the food bank's website. I did volunteer work in Parkdale for a solid decade, so the area is dear to my heart.  Another tune from the playlist I mentioned yesterday. This is the version I'm most familiar with. It was on the radio all the time when I was younger. #SongoftheDay Arthur Theme Song (Ziggy Marley)

Image
Yesterday I talked about my baby sister. After writing that post, this song crept into my head. My sister loved Arthur, growing up.  As a family, we still try to catch Arthur's Perfect Christmas when we're together for the holidays. There's nothing wrong with watching kids' cartoons as a grown-up. That's my expert opinion. #SongoftheDay Pass the Dutchie (Musical Youth)

Image
After the concert I mentioned yesterday, I popped into Tim Hortons for a coffee and an apple fritter to eat on the subway. I was telling my partner that I'd started buying apple fritters instead of other more preferable donuts because they're always the biggest. I just want to cram as much white flour as possible down my gullet. As we rode the subway, we talked about donuts. My author blog is called Donuts and Desires --clearly, I'm a big fan. Funny how we could both name the favourite donut of each of our family members, growing up. My father's favourite was a donut with raisins, a donut called a Dutchie. So here we have a song about donuts. ;-) If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay A Message to You Rudy (The Specials)

Image
A couple days ago, The Specials tweeted that it was the 40th anniversary of their release of this song. I learned from Lana Gay on Indie88 , that The Specials' version is actually a cover. Who knew? Maybe you. Maybe not. Here is the 40-year-old version (heh): And the original, from 1967: If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Ghost Town (The Specials)

Image
Yesterday I promised to bring you the song that is played during an episode of the Irish comedy Father Ted called "Think Fast, Father Ted." During the episode, the DJ priest has forgotten all his records. The only song he as at his disposal is this one. No one at the dance seems to get too desperately sick of it, despite the repetition, and I'm not sure I would either. Just in case you've never heard of this TV show from the 90s , someone has spliced together all the scened featuring Ghost Town for YouTube. Here you go: If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.
