#SongoftheDay Black Water (The Doobie Brothers)

Image
Something woke us at four in the morning. It was the unmistakeable sound of racoons doing acrobatics on the roof. Except we couldn't be sure: roof or attic? Only one way to find out: we got out my bike light (extremely bright) and started doing laps around the house. Sure enough, a racoon was trying to peel open one of the vents. It was on the roof, not in the attic. There's a relief. When we got back indoors, I realized my pyjama pants were covered in mud. I had to change before getting back into bed. But then I couldn't sleep. I just kept listening for the racoon we'd chased off to come back. I finally fell asleep again, and dreamed that my teeth were falling out. This song sounds like the kind of track a person should listen to at four in the morning. Better than an acrobatic racoon. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your...

#SongoftheDay Where Have All the Cowboys Gone? (Paula Cole)

Image
You know... I just wanted to listen to this song today. Simple as that. It came out when I was in high school. It's complex and acerbic. Still holds up after, what, nearly thirty years? If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Hurt (Johnny Cash)

Image
Last night I came out of the bathroom after brushing my teeth to find all the lights off in the bedroom. This is unusual. My partner wouldn't normally turn out the lights until I was in bed, too. So I crept closer to him and I asked what was wrong. That's when I noticed he was curled up in a ball, rocking himself and crying. At first, he said he couldn't talk--it hurt too much. I got in bed with him and cuddled him and rocked with him. He told me his mouth hurt so much he couldn't bear it. His radiation treatments ended almost four months ago, but his mouth is still so sensitive it hurts to eat and brushing his teeth makes him cry. He hasn't used toothpaste in months. The mint in it hurts him too much. Last night's pain was the result of his nightly fluoride treatment--at least, he thinks that's what caused it. The reaction was extreme. It breaks my heart to watch him suffer. All I could think to do was hold him and rock with him. I've spent most of ...

#SongoftheDay A Christmas to Remember (Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers)

Image
I've got a family Christmas party to go to today. Really looking forward to it. The last time my whole family (aunts, uncles, cousins) got together, side effects from my meds got in the way. I kept hoping I'd feel better eventually, because I truly wanted to see everybody, but in the end I was just too sick to go. So I'm hoping we don't have a repeat of that. Last night we had the radio playing the classical music channel and the host said he was taking requests for all those nostalgic Christmas tunes from your childhood. I told my partner this Dolly and Kenny album is my idea of nostalgiac Christmas music. Somehow, I don't think the classical music station is going to play it. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Get a Haircut (Bluenatics)

Image
I made reference to this song in yesterday's post, so we're listening to it today. This is a cover, but I like it better than the original. While I continue to earn far less money as a writer than my big brother Bob (who is actually my younger sister not-Bob), just last week my sister not-Bob with the haircut and the real job was complaining to me about the price of food and the cost of living. I couldn't believe she was feeling the pinch. She makes good money and I've never heard her worry about not having enough. Although she did just take a year of unpaid stress leave from her job, so that could potentially cut into a person's finances. My mother always said that me and my youngest sister (NOT not-Bob) were the kids she never had to worry about. We could always scrounge up money somewhere. I don't know if that's a compliment, but I suppose it's true. It's easier to scrounge when you've been doing it for decades.  If you're wondering ...

#SongoftheDay Everyday is a Winding Road (Sheryl Crow)

Image
I did two loads of laundry yesterday. I am incredibly proud of myself. One big lesson chronic illness has taught me is that I have to do what I can do while I can do it. I've come to terms with the fact that I have shallow reserves of energy and strength. Most days, I experience too much pain to do any heavy lifting, and that includes laundry. When I'm at my partner's house, it's different. First of all, he has a washing machine inside his house. Second of all, he does the laundry. So that makes it extra easy for me. At my apartment, I let dirty clothes build up into Laundry Mountain, and it's hard to move a mountain. Many things that are easy for most people are no longer easy for me. When I think back on the times when I worked in a warehouse and did other very physical labour, I feel like I'm looking at another life, or another person's life. I used to be strong! I'm a tiny little genderqueer individual, and I always felt like I needed to prove my...

#SongoftheDay Ghost Riders in the Sky (Neil LeVang)

Image
I've had a lot of bad pain days recently, and the depression sets in pretty fast. I start thinking about death, and I try to keep it to myself, because if I think about death aloud, my partner tends to spiral with me. It doesn't take much to get him mentally swirling toward the drain. I guess that's why I'm telling you this stuff instead of telling him. I've been thinking of a family friend who died a couple years ago. He died in that "perfect" way: he died in his sleep. He wasn't sick or anything. One night he just went to bed and he didn't wake up. But you know who did wake up? His wife, who was sleeping beside him. She woke up next to a man who wouldn't wake up. I really can't imagine. Dying in your sleep might be the perfect way of dying for the person who actually dies, but for the person who doesn't? It sounds both sad and terrifying. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the ...

#SongoftheDay I Make The Dough, You Get The Glory (Kathleen Edwards)

Yesterday I mentioned that I was trying to remember which song mentioned Marty McSorley. It's this song. This is the song. Maybe there are others, but this is the song I was thinking of. #SongoftheDay All I Wanna Do (Sheryl Crow)

Image
Last night my partner told me he's had two songs stuck in his head for the past two weeks: that awful Kars for Kids jingle and this track. I've played a few annoying songs for you, but you have my solemn promise that I will never play that Kars for Kids monstrosity. Every time that commercial comes on TV, I put it on mute. Sometimes I turn off the TV altogether. I can't stand it. Reminds me of the Minipops, only a thousand times worse. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Only Wanna Be With You (Hootie and the Blowfish)

Image
Speaking of songs that remind me of TV shows, this one makes me think of that early Friends episode where they go to a Hootie and the Blowfish concert. I actually had this cassette tape back in the day. #SongoftheDay You Jerk (Kim Stockwood)

Image
This song was popular in the mid-90s, when I was in high school. It's probably my former girlfriend's anthem to me, but you'd have to ask her about that. Anyway, a different sort of jerk than the one referred to in yesterday's song--that one was a dance move, this one is a meanie.   If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay You Can Let Go (Crystal Shawanda)

Image
This week we're listening to Juno nominees in the Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year category. Crystal Shawanda takes her turn today. Maybe I should have saved this track for Father's Day. Whenever that is. I don't have a father. This song still made me cry, though! #SongoftheDay Hard Ground (Leela Gilday)

Image
I want to focus attention on all the nominees from the Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year category in the recently-awarded 2021 Juno Awards. The Junos are Canadian music awards, in case you're reading from somewhere other than Canada. Let's start with the winner, shall we?  It's Leela Gilday, who shares a first name with one of my favourite Futurama characters.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Something To Talk About (Bonnie Raitt)

Image
I'm composing this post in the middle of the night.  Sex puts my partner to sleep, but it energizes me.  I often end up watching TV on the internet after he's fallen asleep. Tonight, some neighbours of ours are chatting on their balcony.  They've been out there since dinnertime, and they're laughing and talking.  This is the first time I've ever heard them out there. We could even hear them from our bedroom. After sex, I said to my partner, "Those people sure have a lot to talk about."  My partner said, "I wonder if we gave them something to talk about..." I don't think we were that loud, but who knows? If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay On The Road Again (Willie Nelson)

Image
This song came on the car radio on the way home from my vaccine appointment. Every time we went on a car trip when I was a kid, my father would sing us this song.  It was the road trip song, and driving to my vaccine appointment was the longest car trip my partner and I have taken since... wow... last fall?  I couldn't book an appointment anywhere near either of our apartments, so that was our fun little drive.  Our fun little essential drive. We saw a groundhog. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Hands (Jewel)

Image
This song came into my head today, as I was staring at my hands. I'm not high, I'm just mystified: how can my hands look so old?  They are SO WRINKLY.  Why? When did this happen? We're going back to the 90s with a Jewel track, today. My partner still loves this song--the "only kindness matters" part. Kindness is his thing. #SongoftheDay Maggie May (Melissa Etheridge)

Image
I don't usually mention my new books on this blog, but since I'm taking a break from Twitter this Lenten season, I suppose I should try getting the word out in other ways: My latest book in The Lesbian Diaries series is now available from Amazon . It's in the Kindle Unlimited program for the moment, so if you're a KU subscriber that means you can read it for free ! This particular cover of this particular song couldn't be more perfect to accompany the news, as my new book is called Maggie's Diary , and it's about a university student who basically sleeps her way through a school friend's family.  Try keeping that a secret!  Maggie tries. Does she succeed?  Only one way to find out, and that's by reading the book:  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08XW13QJ9?tag=dondes-20 If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Always Have What We Had (William Prince)

Image
I could live inside William Prince's voice, couldn't you? New Year's Eve, my partner wanted to stay up until midnight so we could go outside and look at the CN Tower, which was supposed to be doing something interesting--a light show, I guess.  By 11p.m. I was face-down on the couch, barely floating about the level of consciousness. My partner put on the CBC's New Year's Eve countdown, and William Prince came on. His voice encouraged me to stay awake for the next hour (with the aid of tea and chocolate). At midnight, we left the house and looked around. People were setting off fireworks in every direction. A woman was on her cell phone, asking whoever she was talking to, "You're drunk and alone?!?" Probably there were a lot of drunk and alone people in the world, this New Year's Eve. I would have been content going to bed at ten, but I am middle aged. ymmv If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, t...

#SongoftheDay Standing in My Way (Charley Pride)

Image
I'm not sure if you've heard, but Charley Pride died of Covid last week.   Usually, when I announce an artist's death on this site, I express my regret that I never got around to featuring their work here while they were alive.  This is not the case, with Charley Pride.  We listened to one of his songs last year, when I talked about how blown away I was when I found out there was a Black country music artist who was popular back in the 60s.   I remember my partner telling me that his university girlfriend's father had been a huge Charley Pride fan, and I wonder whether my father's parents had any of his records. His music has the exact Classic Country sound they loved. This is a song I can really relate to.  Man, do I ever make my life harder than it needs to be... RIP If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.
