I haven't been taking my new prescription long enough to know whether it'll turn out to be the best option for managing my chronic illness, but you know what it's doing a miraculous job of managing? My mood! I'd been taking a different medication, previously, that took my depression and dragged it down deeper than it had been in ages. I woke up every morning thinking dark thoughts, seeing no point in living, and not wanting to get out of bed.

The second day on these new meds, I woke up with this tune screaming through my mind, and I couldn't remember the last time I'd felt so happy.

What is this? Where am I? What's it all about?

All good questions. Let me explain. My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day, starting June 1 2019, to share with you whichever song pops into my head. Why?  What's the point? Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. Over the years, I've become increasingly socially isolated and you know what? It sucks. It sucks bad. The truth of the matter is that a lot of us are socially isolated, these days. And not just older people--younger ones, too.  There are "friendly visitor" programs for seniors, but those of us under 65 are kind of lost at sea. I speak from experience. I've been feeling so sick the past few days that I've barely had the energy to watch TV--and that's saying something. Watching TV isn't exactly a gruelling task. But one of my meds has been making me sick to my stomach, and after days of this I am just so weak. It's times like this when I realize how much my partner does to take care of me and to take care of our surroundings when I'm unwell. I'm noticing how much he does because he's not here. He's at his house; I'm at my place. And my place is a mess because I don't have the energy to clean it properly. Now I'm realizing that usually, when I'm sick, he does the dishes, he dries them and puts them away so we don't have a kitchen full of dirty dishes. Normally when I'm sick to my stomach, he runs to the bathroom with me and holds my hair. If my hair is pulled back, he pets my head because he says he doesn't know what else to do. I dropped a peanut on the floor and ate it anyway, and would you believe it was rotten? I think it tried to tell me so by jumping out of my mouth and onto the floor in the first place, but I didn't listen. The version of this song I learned, growing up, was "last night" instead of "just now" and "just now" feels so jarring, wow. There's an annual fair in Toronto called the CNE, also known as the Ex, also known as the Canadian National Exhibition. Before the pandemic, I went to that fair every year for 40 years straight. The pandemic broke my record, because the CNE didn't run for... two years? And then last year I didn't go because I was out of town. This year, I really really really wanted to return. I worried I wouldn't get the opportunity because cancer care has completely taken over my ife. But my partner could see how important the CNE was to me, so he encouraged me to go with my family and have FUN. It turned out opening day of the CNE was the one day my whole family could make it, and it also turned out my favourite cover band, Dwayne Gretzky, was the opening act at the bandshell. We're moving next week. We're not happy about the move, but it's happening nonetheless. I'm going to miss this little house. I know how fortunate I am to live indoors at all, but the past three years have been the only time in my entire adult life when I've been able to live in a house, and going back to living in a high rise isn't something I'm enthusiastic about. The house and town (despite being very small--both the house and the town) are way too expensive to live in. Plus, there's the lack of access to medical care and public transportation.  So we're moving. I'm really sad. And stressed. And busy with all the packing. And my health is poor, as usual. Ill health makes sadness and stress even harder to cope with. That's the big reason I haven't been around. This song was playing in the pharmacy when I was waiting to pick up some new prescriptions. Made me so happy, because I hadn't heard it in decades. I started singing along (sorry, fellow pharmacy waiting people) because a wave of nostalgia hit me so hard.  I don't have any specific memories attached to this song, but nostalgia always hits me harder when I haven't heard a song since I was a kid. #SongoftheDay Shake it Up (Divine)

The other day, as my partner was waiting for his radiation appointment, someone in the waiting room started proudly extolling the ideas of his favourite right-wing politician. This man said he was looking forward to attending a protest "against gender in schools." When my partner told me this story later on, my stomach dropped. Simultaneous to that--to being personally hurt by the sentiment, as a non-binary queer--I couldn't help thinking how incredibly stupid this bigot sounded.  Protesting against gender in schools? That doesn't even make any sense. Do you not want there to be gender in schools? Or do you just not want there to be certain genders in schools? Like mine, perhaps? I used to speak eloqently, before the menopausal brain fog set in. Pile the caregiver brain fog on top of that, and I'm lost in an endless fog.
