#SongoftheDay Faith in the Power of Love (Rozalla)

Image
Okay, last track from Cool as Ice. There are obviously more songs in the movie, but most of them are by Vanilla Ice. This outfit reminds me of the Friends episode where Ross gets stuck in his leather pants. Menopause really gets you thinking: how much am I going to sweat if I wear this? heh If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Gonna Catch You (Lonnie Gordon)

Another track from Cool as Ice. Okay, so it was in a bad movie. So what? This is a flat-out banger, if you as me. #SongoftheDay Jealous (Chromeo)

Image
It's amazing how drastically my perspective on certain life things changed while my partner was undergoing cancer treatment. Suddenly, so many things that used to matter just didn't anymore. I used to get really jealous. Like... really, really jealous. Super ultra mega jealous.  Now that we've been through his radiation process (and all that entails... which is A LOT), jealousy seems to have abandoned me. Which is great. Which is WONDERFUL. I do not miss that poisonous little asp. I could tell you a thousand stories of my own jealousy, but most of them are way too humiliating for pubic dissemination. Here's a stupid one, though: When my partner was looking for a new apartment, we arrived at a big building with retail on the ground level.  A new take-out restaurant had just opened.  The restaurant's name contained... my partner's ex's name. I got that itchy sensation in my chest. Neither of us acknowledged seeing his ex's name in huge letters at the b...

#SongoftheDay The Ants Go Marching (Lenny Pearce)

Image
I have had ants in my apartment for years. How do ants end up in a highrise? I have no idea, but I can't get rid of them, no matter what I do. They're just tiny little things, and I do recall the evening they invaded my kitchen for the first time. It was around seven in the evening when a loud sound occured. In fact, it wasn't just a sound--it was a trembling feeling, too. Didn't feel like an earthquake. Felt more like a hundred jackhammers going at the base of my building at once. It went on for a couple minutes, and then it stopped. And when it stopped, there were suddenly all these ants in my kitchen.  Prior to that moment, I had never seen an ant in my apartment. Now I struggle to keep them at bay. I thought I was the only highrise-dweller on the planet who had this problem, but then I was talking to my partner's friend's sister-in-law (as you do), who lives in a condo building my partner actually wanted to move into, at the time. I don't know why she...

#SongoftheDay Tick Tock (Clean Bandit and Mabel ft. 24kGoldn)

Image
I'm sitting alone in my partner's house, and I'm reminded why I don't usually sit alone in my partner's house. (I usually sit outside.) The clock. It's a sentimental item, for him. His parents received it as a wedding present, so it's old. And it ticks. And it tocks. When there's no one else in the house, it's all I hear: tick, tock, tick, tock. Ticking the hours of my life away. It is the most depressing noise. Not just depressing, but existentially depressing. It might as well be reminding me: you're going to die. The other day, my partner told me that he would like to give the clock to his son. As a gift. He's just not sure about packing it and shipping it overseas. It might get damaged in the process. I don't always want to see things go from this house, but the clock I can live without. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most a...

#SongoftheDay Luna Llena (Arca)

Image
There was a full moon recently--a blue moon, in fact--but I didn't see it. We were still in the city that night, but you can't see the moon from my apartment and we didn't have the energy to leave my building.  A stark contrast to the previous full moon, which we went out in search of.  We learned, at that time of night, that we had to walk down the street behind my building until we got to the first cross road.  From there, if we stood at the corner of the sidewalk, we could just see the moon over another apartment building. There was a satellite dish somewhat in the way, but we could see it. A stark contrast, also, to the night my partner woke me at 2:30 in the morning and brought me into the backyard to watch the shooting stars.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica...

#SongoftheDay Singin' in the Rain (Gene Kelly)

Image
When you get to a certain point of illness, there's nothing else you can focus on. That's where I'm at today. I can barely string these sentences together. It's taking all my energy to type these words, and I'm typo-ing a lot. My health is atrocious. I'm in terrible pain. I'm still taking care of my partner. I still haven't gone to the ER. I'm scared to go. I don't want to leave my partner alone. I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid. I don't know why I chose Singin' in the Rain as our song of the day. I do feel rained on, but I'm definitely not happy about it. I did enjoy watching the dancing in this video, though. It gave me four minutes of distraction. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help ...

#SongoftheDay Shake it Up (Divine)

Image
The other day, as my partner was waiting for his radiation appointment, someone in the waiting room started proudly extolling the ideas of his favourite right-wing politician. This man said he was looking forward to attending a protest "against gender in schools." When my partner told me this story later on, my stomach dropped. Simultaneous to that--to being personally hurt by the sentiment, as a non-binary queer--I couldn't help thinking how incredibly stupid this bigot sounded.  Protesting against gender in schools? That doesn't even make any sense. Do you not want there to be gender in schools? Or do you just not want there to be certain genders in schools? Like mine, perhaps? I used to speak eloqently, before the menopausal brain fog set in. Pile the caregiver brain fog on top of that, and I'm lost in an endless fog. So I'm glad I wasn't there in that waiting room when this man was spewing his transphobia all over the cancer patients (he wasn't a...

#SongoftheDay Milkshake (Kelis)

Image
Yesterday, I mentioned a bunch of dairy products. After having written "whole milk" I thought to myself, gee, I guess I've been reading a lot of American recipe blogs lately, because that's not what we call it here in Canada. We call it "homo milk"--short for homogenized. That's what we've always called it, for as long as I can remember. Maybe it's generational, though, because when we met with my partner's oncological dietitian (a person younger than we are), she asked us, "How do you feel about switching to 3.25% milk?" I laughed, because I'd never heard anyone call it that before. I never even knew what percentage milkfat homo milk contained. It's possible our dietitian doesn't feel comfortable asking cancer patients, "How do you feel about drinking homo milk?" If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are ...

#SongoftheDay Buffalo Stance (Neneh Cherry)

Image
This song has been in my head, off and on, for weeks. I finally looked up two things:  a) Which TV show used it as theme music?  Jamie's 15 Minute Meals.  b) What is a Buffalo Stance, anyway? I'm not quoting the answer I found, because I looked it up last week, but I seem to recall reading a snippet from an interview with Neneh Cherry stating that it refers to the attitude you need to take in order to survive inner city life. Years ago, I wrote an extensive blog post on this topic. I grew up in a neighbourhood known for its gang activity, and the more time I spend away from that place the less I like going back. My mom still lives there. Years ago I visited her weekly. Then it was monthly. Now it's... well, I could blame the pandemic for keeping me away, but that might be a convenient excuse. When I wrote previously (on a different blog) about who I need to be to return to my old neighbourhood, I talked about putting on another face to take the bus to my mom's house. I ...

#SongoftheDay Push It (Salt-N-Pepa)

Image
I've lived in a high-rise for so many years that I stopped trying to be quiet in bed. The walls at my place are so thick you really can't hear other people's sex noises through them. You need to be out in the hallway--then you can hear sex through people's doors, if they're having it, and they're being loud. My partner's place is a different story. His apartment is part of an old house. You can hear everything through the walls. What makes it worse is that we know all our neighbours in his building. We're friendly with everyone. They're all nice people. Most are single and elderly. For a solid week, all of our neighbours were away visiting family. We had the whole building to ourselves. We could have had the loudest sex you could ever imagine. Except I got food poisoning. And then I went to my apartment. And then my partner had a night of bad intestinal cramping. But finally we had sex. Finally!  One night only of shout-it-from-the-rooftops orgasms. ...

#SongoftheDay Everybody Everybody (Black Box)

Image
This track from 1990 is like comfort food for my ears. And, boy, do I need it today. My partner is on the phone with his brother. I've mentioned before that he doesn't like talking to his brother (he says his brother doesn't listen to him, just drones on endlessly about stuff nobody could possibly be interested in), so I retreat to my nostalgic music. That way I don't have to overhear the growling in the other room. Interestingly, when I grabbed this video from Youtube, the following was posted beneath it: NOTE: The Lady in the video is not the actual Singer, she is lip-syncing If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay The Hustle (Van McCoy)

Image
In an effort to feel young, I'm reminding myself that this fad came before my time. I did the Macarena. I might even have been known to Achy-Breaky-Heart. But I never did The Hustle.  Still, this classic 70s disco tune is so ubiquitous that it remains implanted in my brain. I don't know how to dance to it, but it's in there. #SongoftheDay Groove is in the Heart (Deee-Lite)

Image
Okay, so we're moving on from the 80s to the 90s--or 1990, at least.  When I used to tape music videos from MuchMusic onto VHS, this one was on my special tape. My favourite tape. This song makes me stupidly happy. There's a lot of trippy flashing/strobing, though, so if you're sensitive to that stuff you might not want to watch the video. #SongoftheDay Relax (Frankie Goes To Hollywood)

Image
Did you think we'd escaped the 80s? Oh no, we have not. There is no escape. The 80s is forever. Although, I gotta say, once you reach the older age brackets the advice flips: if you can come, do it--otherwise we're gonna be here all night.    If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay The Bad Touch -- The Eiffel 65 Remix (Bloodhound Gang)

Image
Yesterday I talked about never having been to a club in my youth.  My best friend was nerdy like me, but she was better at making friends and going along with whatever the group wanted to do. When she went to university, she eventually ended up renting a floor of a house with other students. She didn't drink, but she still seemed to enjoy hosting weird themed drinking parties. When her friend group wanted to go to a club, she went with them. It was a very cold night in a very snowy Canadian city. She and her friends waited in line, outside, in the blustery winter, for an absurdly long time. The guy behind her in line--a stranger--looked her in the eye and recited the lyrics to this song in absolute earnest. That was his come-on line, apparently. I wonder if it ever worked on anyone. You know what? I don't really feel like I missed out on anything, not going to clubs and all. I feel icky posting this song, and I never had it recited it to me by some guy on the street. If you...

#SongoftheDay The Power (SNAP!)

Image
When I was sick, I had some really weird dreams. Even now that I'm recovering, I'm having some really weird dreams. I dreamed there were insects burrowing into my skin. That freaked me out so much I woke up and checked to make sure it wasn't really happening. (It wasn't.) My last dream before being woken up by a contractor drilling in another apartment and a crew of leaf-blower people out front was strange in that I wasn't myself. I caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror and I was pencil-thin, blonde, young, and wearing little else but lingerie. Not me. There was a girl in my dream who I guess was my friend. She was in a tizzy because she'd gotten her period for the first time. "Actually," she said, "I got it once years ago, but never again after that. And then I got it again today!" I asked her how old she was. She said, "Seventeen. Well, almost seventeen." So was I a teenager too? Seemed so. The strangest thing, to me, was that I...

#SongoftheDay Move This (Technotronic)

Image
When I listen to tracks like this, tracks from my youth, tracks that hit me square in the nostalgia centre, sometimes I find myself thinking: this song isn't very good. But the goodness or not-goodness of it doesn't really matter. The punch of nostalgia is what matters. On the rare occasions when I hear today's popular music, I often find myself thinking: this isn't very good. But, of course, that doesn't matter to the kids who like it today. And it probably won't matter to them when they're adults hearing the songs of their younger years on an oldies station (if radio continues to exist, and I hope it will!) because today's popular songs will hit them square in the nostalgia centre and they will be transported. Music really is something, don't you think?  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay No Limit (2 UNLIMITED)

Image
Ahhh this one takes me back. I was out for a walk a few weeks ago and I strolled by an old man blasting this track on a boombox. Ever since then, the song has popped in and out of my head. Every time it pops in I think, "Oh, I'd better share this story with the music blog," but by the time I get to my computer, I've forgotten which song I was thinking of.  When it's gone I can't get it back. Finally I got to my computer before I lost it. Finally. #SongoftheDay Your Woman (White Town)

Image
I have an entire post in my head, but my little voice is telling me not to write it.  It's about queer issues, and it's just going to piss off the Karens in our community. What do you call a queer Karen, anyway? I'm sure someone's come up with a name, but I don't know it.  Anyway, I'll let my queer words live on in my queer head while I queerly play this song for you. Have a nice Monday as we welcome in the summer!
