My partner and I cycled down to the lake to watch the Perseids meteor shower earlier this week. We brought a blanket and got down on the ground to stare up at the sky. We only saw two meteors this year, but they were spectacular, so I'm happy with that.

A couple years ago, we were visiting friends at their cottage during the Perseids. Being far from any town or city, we saw tons of shooting stars. But the most I ever saw was camping with my mother and sister in a dark sky preserve. We went on a guided night hike and the sky was just constant streaks of starlight. We counted well over 100, but there were kind of too many to count. We were spoiled for stars.

This classic NFB animated short popped into my YouTube feed, and I immediately watched it because I have not seen it since I was a child. Or... hmmm... it just occurred to me that I think a TV station used to play NFB shorts as interstitials between programs, but I can't remember which station and I can't remember when. I do seem to recall seeing this one as an adult, now that I think extra-hard about it, but it's been decades. This has been our song of the day in the past, but that was years ago, and you might have noticed that it was spliced into yesterday's song of the day. Reminded me of the Rifftrax joke "Why do bad movies always remind us of better movies we could be watching?" No, yesterday's song wasn't BAD; I just don't love it.  And I do love this one. I pulled this clip from Soul Train because I miss this style of TV show. I can't remember the name of the one I watched when I was a teen. I also can't remember the name of the one my aunt went on when SHE was a teen. They showed her white go-go boots onscreen and all her younger siblings were at home, pointing at the TV, going, "Those are her boots! Those are her boots!" #SongoftheDay The Last Unicorn (America)

Well, I mentioned this movie yesterday, so today we're listening to the song. As I watched this video that I guess pretty much spoilers the movie for you (if you can decipher it), I realized that I have no memory of what this film is about. A unicorn, obviously. But she turns into a woman I guess? All I know is that I watched it every time it came on TV.  I remember being in a motel room in Buffalo and my parents wanting to go out and do stuff, but my sister and I just wanted to sit on the bed and watch The Last Unicorn. So that's what we did. Went all the way to America to watch a movie we'd seen a dozen times on TV. Woo-hoo! Road trip! So I still can't remember the story of this film. As a perimenopausal person, I can only assume it's really about The Menopause. At this time of life, anything about the last of something is clearly about being childless and menopausal. #SongoftheDay Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes (Paul Robeson)

I've been falling asleep to an episode of Midsomer Murders called The Silent Land for the past... oh, three months? (I like repetition) and that episode begins with Joyce and Cully at a music concert of what Cully refers to as "all that folky stuff."  The song we hear performed is this one.  Cully doesn't like this music and she's squirming and rolling her eyes as the performer is singing. I don't buy that a professional actor would be so rude.  I used to work in a theatre, and the actors there are the people who taught me how to be a good audience member. When I say "good" I guess I actually mean "engaged" because the actors taught me to laugh and react, to give the performers on stage energy to work with.  So I don't buy a character who is supposed to be a stage actor being sullen and rude, even if she wasn't enjoying the show.  Anyway, that's my random episode of Midsomer Murders deep dive for the day. #SongoftheDay Broken Wings (Mr. Mister)

 Now that I have a chronic upper GI condition (in addition to my 8 other chronic illnesses--not joking), I have to be mindful not only of what I eat, but of how much food I eat. The hardest part of this adjustment is allowing myself to NOT finish every scrap on my plate. I try to serve myself smaller portions, but I don't always get it right.  Sometimes I know I'm full or that if I continue eating I will be uncomfortable, but there's that shaming parental voice in my head telling me to clear my plate, don't waste food, all these lessons learned in childhood that taught me not to listen to my body.  My partner and I were talking about this recently because our granddaughter is being potty trained at the moment, and I said to my partner that potty training seems like the only instance in childhood where I was actually taught to listen to my body. Oh man, did I fall down a rabbit hole after yesterday's post. Remember how I couldn't rememember the name of the dance party show that was on when I was a teen? I remembered. It was Electric Circus. So then I started looking for clips from Electric Circus, and I did find some, but I was a teen before internet-times, so the clips available were digitized from people's VCR recordings, complete with starts and ends of commercials. Remember when you'd pause the recording at the commercial, and then you'd try to gauge when was a good time to restart it so that you wouldn't miss any of your show, but you also wouldn't waste too much tape? This was a very nostalgic rabbit hole. But not conducive to video posting for our particular purposes. A couple weeks ago I thought I had the theme song from the 80s cartoon The Raccoons stuck in my head. I was kind of right and kind of wrong, because this was actually the outro music. But I think most of us would still consider it the theme song, right? And, let me say: this song is a banger. I didn't take it for granted, watching The Raccoons as a kid. I knew this song was amazing. I've been feeling too ill to watch anything I haven't seen already. I don't have the cognitive capacity to concentrate when I'm feeling this way. That means rewatching Murder, She Wrote, Midsomer Murders, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, and... Heartbeat! #SongoftheDay Gently Johnny from The Wicker Man

I finally watched the 1973 folk horror film The Wicker Man last week and it was not at all what I was expecting. I thought I was walking into a horror movie, and instead it felt like an episode of Heartbeat directed by David Lynch.  But I mean that as a compliment. I enjoyed the film and I will absolutely watch it again. The version I watched the director's cut, and I have subsequently discovered that this song, sung by Paul Giovanni who did the music for the film, did not appear in the original theatrical release. I'm glad it was shoved back in, because I love it. So atmospheric.
