#SongoftheDay The Model (Kraftwerk)

Image
This song was playing in the background of an episode of Bergerac I was watching the other day. Later on my partner and I were watching something else and one of the characters said something to the effect of, "Why are you all standing around like Kraftwerk?"  That's when my partner told me he once ended up with a Kraftwerk tape, but it wasn't his and he never listened to it. The musical equivalent of "I was just holding it for a friend," am I right? If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Haut les mains (Ottawan) #disco #the80s #nostalgia

Turns out this song has already been our song of the day, but you know what? That was five years ago and the video I posted back then has since been taken down, so we're revisiting the soundtrack of my childhood.  Boy, we loved this song when I was a kid. As I mentioned the last time we listened to it, "Haut les mains" was popular in both French and English (at least it was where I lived) and there were dance moves that went along with the tune.  We also used to sing it as:  Hands up! It's a stick-up! Give me all your money money, Don't be funny funny... #SongoftheDay Moonbeam (Giselle Renarde)

Image
Often I forget that I once made an album of... ummm... music. I almost feel like there should be a question mark, there: ummm... music? Yes, it's music. Let's have some confidence, shall we? It is definitely music and I definitely made it. I'm just not sure how to classify this music. I think I created most of it more than a decade ago, although I only released the album a couples years back. It hasn't exactly made me a household name. Probably doesn't help that I hardly ever tell anyone about it. The trouble is, I'm very self-effacing and I have difficulty taking pride in anything I create. That's a pretty sucky place to come from when you create things for a living. But here we are. And here's some music I made. I picked this song to play because I wanted to well you about the weird background sound. I don't know what you call it because I no longer have a brain--thank you, menopause. Anyway, let's call it the background sound. To create i...

#SongoftheDay Under the Ice (Topo & Roby)

Image
This music video was among the preshow weirdness before this week's Movie Jo Night (on the Mary Jo Pehl Show channel on Twitch). I had never heard the song before, but I instantly fell in love with it. I had no idea what the song was called. I found it on the internet by googling the lyrics... which are quite odd. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Jealous (Chromeo)

Image
It's amazing how drastically my perspective on certain life things changed while my partner was undergoing cancer treatment. Suddenly, so many things that used to matter just didn't anymore. I used to get really jealous. Like... really, really jealous. Super ultra mega jealous.  Now that we've been through his radiation process (and all that entails... which is A LOT), jealousy seems to have abandoned me. Which is great. Which is WONDERFUL. I do not miss that poisonous little asp. I could tell you a thousand stories of my own jealousy, but most of them are way too humiliating for pubic dissemination. Here's a stupid one, though: When my partner was looking for a new apartment, we arrived at a big building with retail on the ground level.  A new take-out restaurant had just opened.  The restaurant's name contained... my partner's ex's name. I got that itchy sensation in my chest. Neither of us acknowledged seeing his ex's name in huge letters at the b...

#SongoftheDay Send Me an Angel (Real Life)

Image
Hello, my angels. Sorry I missed posting yesterday. That was the first time I ever went a day without posting without warning you first. Yesterday was New Year's Day (I schedule posts at least a day in advance, so it's January 2nd as I'm typing these words) and, since it was also a Monday, I told my partner I'd better clean the bathrooms. That's what I do every other Monday. That, and work. (I know, my life is endlessly exciting...) When I mentioned cleaning, my partner said, "Let's not clean today. It's a holiday!" (While I clean the bathrooms, he cleans... the entire rest of the house. That said, it is his house. I have an entire other apartment to clean when we get to the city). Anyway. We didn't clean. Because it was a holiday. And I didn't schedule my post for this here music blog. Because it was a holiday. Instead, I bought myself a digital copy of the RiffTrax Live show, Rad . I've been looking forward to seeing it since be...

#SongoftheDay Opportunities (Pet Shop Boys)

Image
I'm kind of obsessed with this song, for reasons I don't really understand. It isn't nostalgia. Even though this track charted in Canada when I was growing up, I don't remember it at all. The first time I recall hearing it was a couple months ago, on what I will reluctantly call my "oldies" radio station (though, to me, "oldies" will always be music from the 50s and 60s). Money and me got a complicated relationship. I ain't got it and I probably never will.  I have a bad attitude. It's funny how the powers that be (and their minions) want us poors to believe it's our own fault that we're trapped in poverty. Forget that I'm a disabled queer with depression, anxiety, and two kinds of PTSD. If I'd only get a haircut and get a real job, I wouldn't be in this financial situation. The funny thing (to me) is that when I had a haircut AND a real job, I still earned peanuts. I earn fewer peanuts as a writer, but I can do this w...

#SongoftheDay Number One Fan (MUNA)

Image
I know I'm having a difficult day when I find myself watching YouTube videos about Complex PTSD, which is a form of PTSD I have in spades. If you ever want to borrow some PTSD, I've got more than enough and I'm happy to share. Unfortunately, when I share my PTSD with other people, it's more like sharing my PTSD "at" other people, and basically what I'm saying is that it's an altercation. My life can get ugly, and I can feel ugly, and that's why I hide myself away most of the time. On days when I don't leave the house, it's either because of chronic illness, or it's because I'm afraid of how I might interact with other people out there in the world. Sometimes I hate the world.  Other times, I hate myself so much that I don't want to subject the world to... well, to ME. One of the YouTube people I was listening to today mentioned this song I'd never heard of by this band I'd never heard of. I immediately looked it up....

#SongoftheDay Warhol's Portrait of Gretzky (Hawksley Workman)

Image
Yesterday I mentioned that my partner named a teddy bear after a hockey player. That hockey player was Auston Matthews. But it reminded me that my uncle once named a dog after Marty McSorley. (I've had to look up how to spell every name in this post. I am NOT well-versed in hockey player names.) Anyway, my partner and I were talking about this dog the other day, and I said to him, "There used to be a song that mentioned Marty McSorley." I thought it might be this one. It's not. I'll bring you the one I was thinking of tomorrow, but for now... there's this. (It's been probably a decade since I last heard this track, and I still love it.) If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Here Comes the Rain Again (Eurythmics)

Image
It was Thanksgiving here in Canada, this past weekend. Even though my partner and I never have company for Thanksgiving dinner, it still means a lot of cooking for me. It's a big meal. This year was tough because apparently my partner had emailed a friend a couple months ago saying he figured he'd have his tastebuds back in time for Thanksgiving. (If you're new around here, he lost his sense of taste during cancer treatment this summer.) Well, my partner doesn't have his tastebuds back. What's worse is that he'd been feeling better over the past few weeks, and this weekend the extreme fatigue and pain he experienced during and after radiation came back full force. His oncologist said to expect this--that recovery was not linear, and that he could start feeling better and then suddenly feel worse again--but the setback has made him angry, irritable, depressed, and a whole lot more.  As I write this, it's storming outside. It's been grey all day, and ve...

#SongoftheDay Poison (Milk & Bone ft. Deebs)

Image
I just had this random memory of a time when my partner and I were first going out (well, staying in, more like).  I was actually working a job outside the home at the time. It was only a two-week gig, but I'm used to the freedom of a writer's life.  My partner was always on my mind. I thought about him obsessively, like a teenager. I felt young again.  It was amazing. The job I had was out by the airport.  Since I have a terrible phone plan with no data, I would run over to the hotel across the street and use their wifi to send naughty emails to this man I was so wrapped up in. I always wanted to be in his arms, but the best I could do during those daytime shifts was think about him and email him and crave him like candy. Now I sleep beside him every night. Often I feel lucky to have this incredible person by my side, but sometimes I miss that spark of the beginning stages of a relationship. I wish I knew how to maintain that through cancer, caregiving, and life i...

#SongoftheDay Obsession (Animotion)

Image
Every time this song comes on the radio, I say to my partner, "This was the theme for Fashion Television, remember?"  He doesn't remember because he didn't spend the entire 80s watching CityTV (aside from Baby Blues, of course).  I never watched Fashion Television, myself (I am the least fashionable person you will ever meet), but it came on after something I did watch (I don't remember what), so I will always equate this song with that show. The other day, the DJ on my 70s/80s/90s radio station introduced this track by saying, "Taking you back to Fashion Television..." and I turned to my partner like: See? See? It's not just me! I didn't post the music video because the sound quality didn't seem amazing, but the video is honestly like the 80s threw up on itself. That decade, man--I'm still recovering from it. I met a couple of young people today, and I keep thinking they would look at any 80s music video and think it was all for sho...

#SongoftheDay Dream Weaver (Gary Wright)

Image
Every hour at the hospital feels like five. By the time we got home from two radiation treatments yesterday (one first thing in the morning, one late in the afternoon), I felt like we'd been at my partner's cancer care centre for years. Between his two bouts of radiation, my partner had a check-in with his oncologist and some other healthcare professionals. They were concerned that his blood pressure was very low, and he was notably dehydrated. One of the many horrible side effects of the radiation he's receiving is that it causes extreme pain in his mouth and throat, making it difficult to eat and drink. He's doing his best, but he's also exhausted all the time. It's hard to drink your 8 glasses of water a day when you're always asleep. So, anyway, they put him on an IV drip, which made him cold despite the warm blanket the nurse had put on him. (The nurses at this hospital are amazing. The are so compassionate. I truly love them.) I had to run out to a...

#SongoftheDay Brilliance (Giselle Renarde/Atmospheric Tranquility Tones)

Image
I originally released this album under a keywordy made-up artist name becuase I figured people would stumble upon it more easily that way. After I released my " Beautiful Noise " album, I discovered that way more people listened to an album by Giselle Renarde than an album by Atmospheric Tranquility Tones. I have really low self-esteem and I pretty much think I'm worthless and I'm nothing and my name is not a draw, but it turns out... well, I guess it is. So I decided to change the metadata for my album " Mindfulness Music for a New Age " a couple weeks ago. The music from this album is very electronic and reminds me of the New Age music I used to listen to in the 90s. Some tracks feature my very loud air conditioner , which I recorded, distorted and looped. It's not featured on this particular track, but you'll come across it if you listen to the full album . If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every...

#SongoftheDay Let The Music Play (Shannon)

Image
One thing I've noticed about playing 80s music around people who were not young in the 80s is that they are, for the most part, utterly confounded. They don't understand that, for those of us who were young in the 80s, this sound has infused our bodies and minds. It's inside us. We can't explain why we love it--at least, I can't--but we do love it and that's not going to stop. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Push It (Salt-N-Pepa)

Image
I've lived in a high-rise for so many years that I stopped trying to be quiet in bed. The walls at my place are so thick you really can't hear other people's sex noises through them. You need to be out in the hallway--then you can hear sex through people's doors, if they're having it, and they're being loud. My partner's place is a different story. His apartment is part of an old house. You can hear everything through the walls. What makes it worse is that we know all our neighbours in his building. We're friendly with everyone. They're all nice people. Most are single and elderly. For a solid week, all of our neighbours were away visiting family. We had the whole building to ourselves. We could have had the loudest sex you could ever imagine. Except I got food poisoning. And then I went to my apartment. And then my partner had a night of bad intestinal cramping. But finally we had sex. Finally!  One night only of shout-it-from-the-rooftops orgasms. ...

#SongoftheDay Relax (Frankie Goes To Hollywood)

Did you think we'd escaped the 80s? Oh no, we have not. There is no escape. The 80s is forever. Although, I gotta say, once you reach the older age brackets the advice flips: if you can come, do it--otherwise we're gonna be here all night.    If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.  LeVar Burton is: Funk Police! But for real. That's LeVar Burton. He's in this video. He is the funk police. I'm so nostalgic for the 80s.  Oh well. Can't live in the past. Calgon, take me away! #SongoftheDay I've Been Thinking About You (Londonbeat)

Image
It's morning. I'm lying in bed with the curtains closed, listening to songs like this--songs from the past, nostalgic ones that bring me comfort. I got out of bed once, only briefly, to turn on the air conditioner. When I was out there, I stepped on something unidentifiable that embedded itself in my foot. The world outside my bed seems like a hostile place today, especially to my feet. There is much to do. Much adulting to do. I don't wanna do it. I don't wanna. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.
