#SongoftheDay Toot Toot Root (The Gaylords)

This is the third version of My Toot Toot we're listening to, and I'm not sorry. I am obsessed with this song. I couldn't not play this cover. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Under the Ice (Topo & Roby)

Image
This music video was among the preshow weirdness before this week's Movie Jo Night (on the Mary Jo Pehl Show channel on Twitch). I had never heard the song before, but I instantly fell in love with it. I had no idea what the song was called. I found it on the internet by googling the lyrics... which are quite odd. #SongoftheDay Where oh Werewolf? (Mike and the Bots, MST3k)

Image
When we listened to The Leader of the Laundromat the other day, it reminded me of this host segment from the Werewolf (Worlwuff?) episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Maybe you're familiar with this catchy little number. Maybe you're not. I think Mike and the bots look great as a girl group.  There are so many great lines in this song, but if I had to pick a favourite, it would probably be: "Gee, that's too bad, Suzy." A perfectly appropriate response when someone tells you their boyfriend died. Use it at the next funeral you go to. I'm sure it will evoke tears of something or other. #SongoftheDay The Leader of the Laundromat (The Detergents)

Image
I've got another story about my ring flying off my finger, but this time it was in public.  The last time this happened, at least it was in the privacy of our own home. This time, it happened in the laundry room of my apartment building. My partner carried the laundry for me, because I no longer have the strength to do many household tasks on my own. Once the laundry basket was set before the washing machine, I assured him I could load it by myself, and I went to task. As I was loading the machine, a young guy came into the laundry room and started doing the same a few machines down the line. The laundry room in my building is really large and bright and welcoming--they renovated it a couple years ago, and I must say they did a great job. So, anyway, I finished loading the washer, stood up, and realized there was a whole bunch of lint all over my sweatshirt. I started brushing it off, and as I did so, my ring flew off my finger. Since I was brushing in a downward motion, it hit th...

#SongoftheDay The Ants Go Marching (Lenny Pearce)

Image
I have had ants in my apartment for years. How do ants end up in a highrise? I have no idea, but I can't get rid of them, no matter what I do. They're just tiny little things, and I do recall the evening they invaded my kitchen for the first time. It was around seven in the evening when a loud sound occured. In fact, it wasn't just a sound--it was a trembling feeling, too. Didn't feel like an earthquake. Felt more like a hundred jackhammers going at the base of my building at once. It went on for a couple minutes, and then it stopped. And when it stopped, there were suddenly all these ants in my kitchen.  Prior to that moment, I had never seen an ant in my apartment. Now I struggle to keep them at bay. I thought I was the only highrise-dweller on the planet who had this problem, but then I was talking to my partner's friend's sister-in-law (as you do), who lives in a condo building my partner actually wanted to move into, at the time. I don't know why she...

#SongoftheDay Rama Lama Ding Dong (Sha Na Na)

Image
I don't always understand why YouTube pitches me the videos it does. After I'd watched the Kathleen Edwards track we featured yesterday, YouTube decided that I would definitely want to watch Sha Na Na. At first, I didn't think I could get on board. And then I spent the next hour watching Sha Na Na videos. So maybe YouTube knows me better than I know myself. #SongoftheDay Can't Get Enough of Myself (Santigold)

Image
This little music blog of mine was on hiatus for nearly two years. I brought it back to life just as my partner was about to start cancer treatment. The doctors kept warning us that it would be hard. Every aspect of his treatment and its side effects and recovery would be extremely challenging. And they have been. It seems pretty stupid to start up a lost blog when I've got all this stuff (in addition to my own chronic health issues) to deal with. Why heap the responsibility of daily blog posts onto the stress of cancer caregiving? Because I knew it would help me to write to you every day.  Writing helps me, generally. I've been a professional writer for the past 17 years, and most of that time I've funnelled my own personal experiences into my fiction and non-fiction. But I haven't been doing much of that, recently. I've written books, but they haven't been very personal. The last book I wrote that was intensely intimate to my own lived experience was Delta...

#SongoftheDay That Song In Every Musical That No One Likes (Sarah Smallwood Parsons)

Image
I found a pair of theatre tickets when I was shuffling through a drawer today. We go at the end of the month, if nothing medical comes up.  My partner and I had forgotten about these tickets. His siblings bought them for him as a birthday gift. Feels like centuries ago. We were supposed to see this play in May. As it happens, an exploratory surgical biopsy was booked for precisely that day. Back when his siblings bought those tickets, we didn't even know he had cancer. Luckily, the theatre company had no trouble rebooking our tickets for a date months in the future. We thought we'd have breezed through treatments by now. And, while we are done with radiation for the moment, I wouldn't say the process was a breeze. My partner is in the recovery phase now. He needs to do a lot of healing before his oncologist can even check to see if his treatments were successful. So, while it's entirely possible (even probable) that we'll be able to use those theatre tickets ...

#SongoftheDay Joy to the World (Three Dog Night)

Image
I want to tell you about a wild experience I had inside my own mind. If you remember Laurie Brown from CBC's The Signal, you might be aware that she has a podcast called Pondercast. I only just found out that she's been creating these incredible guided meditations. These things are seriously next-level. They really do it for me. Today I listened to an episode that was called Waiting, I think. Sorry to be so vague--I'm just trying to get this out fast so I don't lose it. In this episode, she mentions a quote about catching sight of yourself in a shop window and realizing that you have the option to either see your own reflection or see what's beyond. At the end of the meditation, I had this visual experience (in my mind) of trying to see what was on the other side of the glass. I could only seem to see myself, but I wanted to know what was going on inside. When I was finally able to see through that window, what I saw inside was really adorable. There were all ...

#SongoftheDay DAP (Lady Bunny & Flotilla Debarge)

Image
We've been listening to opera all week, but today we're breaking away for a parody of Cardi B's WAP. Why? Because I've been taking baths lately and it gives me time to think--too much time to think. I don't like baths. I always feel like I'm wasting time when I'm sitting there soothing my undercarriage. My body's not giving me much choice these days. My own perimenopausal pussy causes me a multitude of problems (including but not limited to a herpes outbreak, currently), and that's in addition to the hemorrhoids that are nearly ever-present nowadays. My body used to be a source of pleasure. Now it's worn and torn brings me pain and irritation. I miss my WAP. I've traded it for a DAP. That's what I was thinking about in the tub. I found myself wondering if anyone had made a parody called DAP. Sure enough...  This video is age-restricted, so you'll have to click through to Youtube in order to watch it:  https://www.youtube.com/...

#SongoftheDay The Ferret Song (John Cleese & the Loving Pruneful)

I was just thinking about a girl I knew as a child who had something like seven ferrets? That's a lot of ferrets in one apartment.   If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay A Talking Cat!?! Official Trailer

Image
Every time I'm having a terrible day, the movie appears in my life like magic. It aired on the Rifftrax Twitch channel the day one of my cats died, and watching it helped me deal with the intense grief I was feeling.  The other day, I was having an awful time when I opened Youtube and found that Rifftrax was adding it to their channel. I got my work out of the way so I could chat with other fans during the premiere, and that helped me set aside all the depression and anxiety bullshit going on in my head. If you were there and you're reading this now *waves* we're friends now! #SongoftheDay Bean Song (Josh Groban)

Image
I'm sorry for everything that's about to happen. You probably don't need to know this about me, but I miss farting. I used to do it all the time. I farted freely, whenever I wanted to.  Now that I live with a man, I try very hard to keep my gas inside me. Sometimes I feel like Kenny in that episode of South Park where he spontaneously combusts from holding in his farts. If I ever spontaneously combust, I'm telling you right now: that's why. Maybe I'm becoming a romantic, though, because if I had to choose between singledom and farting freely or living with my partner and holding it in, I would definitely choose my partner. I love the guy, and choosing farts over love is kind of... well, a very appealing option at times... but I'll stick with love for now. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Beans Beans the Musical Fruit (The British Pickles)

Image
My partner's been doing almost all the shopping throughout covid, which means I have to explain in detail what I want any time I add something unfamiliar to the list. I asked him to buy black beans, because for years I've been making tacos with black beans and corn instead of ground beef.   It's absolutely delicious. Try it. Anyway, my partner came home from the supermarket totally perplexed. After ten minutes of looking at beans, he settled on refried beans because they were near the taco shells. I should have explained that the black beans would probably be in a different aisle. I'm not really familiar with the gigantic supermarket he shops at, so who knows? I made our tacos with ground beef, but then we had all these refried beans that my partner wouldn't touch.  I refuse to waste food, so I've been eating burritos a lot. Last night I was singing this song to my partner in bed. I don't think he felt particularly serenaded. He doesn't appreciate my se...

I've had this Smash Mouth song in my head for days (don't know why). When I looked it up on Youtube I came across this phenomenal cover played on a variety of melons. Enjoy! #SongoftheDay Jurassic Park (Weird Al Yankovic)

Image
I've had this song in my head since last week, when I heard McArthur Park on the radio. Then last night, my partner and I watched a documentary about sea creatures around Cocos Island The narrator mentioned that this was the spot that had inspired the fictional location of Jurassic Park. That sealed it: I was destined to bring you this song today.  btw I remember watching this music video for the first time at a friend's house. I can't remember which friend. It was on a little TV in somebody's basement. Not much of a memory, is it? #SongoftheDay Tuna the Food of My Soul (Garrison Keillor ft. Jean Redpath, Prudence Johnson & Philip Brunelle)

Image
I'm watching Murder She Wrote and eating casserole straight from the pot.  The egg noodles and peas and mushroom soup got me thinking about one night more than a year ago, when my siblings and I returned to my mother's house after spending more than ten hours with her in the emergency room. She'd been released too early after a cancer surgery, and had to be readmitted.  That process should not have taken as long as it did. We were exhausted after the day we'd spent at the hospital. It was 11:30 at night, and we opened the fridge to find a casserole my aunt had made for us.  We heated it in the microwave, but started eating it before it was even very warm.  None of us had eaten since breakfast, and we consumed that casserole robotically.  We ate huge amounts of food.  The day had been so stressful and full of worry and emotion that I can't imagine a more perfect food than bland casserole.  In a certain context, there's nothing better than a casser...

#SongoftheDay Got My Mind Set On You (George Harrison)

We used to always sing this song as "Wake up; I might sit on you." We know those weren't the lyrics, but we didn't care. #SongoftheDay In Living Color Opening Theme (Heavy D & the Boyz)

Image
Hold on to your horses--we're not leaving 1990 yet. Maybe you remember a show called In Living Color? My partner doesn't, but I watched it religiously. My cousin and I would dance along with the fly girls. We thought our moves were amazing. I'm pretty sure they weren't. But that's not what this story is about. There was a boy I went to school with who would sing the lyrics as, "You can do what you want to do... UNDER THE COVERS."  My friends and I were so innocent we found those words absolutely scandalous. Oh my gosh, under the covers? That is so naughty!  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Do The Bartman (Bart Simpson)

Image
Yesterday I mentioned the album The Simpsons Sing the Blues . Well, this song was on that album.  I haven't seen the video since it first aired--I believe in 1990--but as soon as I rewatched it, I remembered that first viewing like it was yesterday.  I'm just going by memory, here, so I could be wrong (I often am), but I remember this music video airing just after an episode of The Simpsons. It might have been before, but I think it was after. The Simpsons aired on Thursday nights on Fox, back then, and I'm assuming this video and the song were meant to make a splash. I'm not sure they did.  The Simpsons were definitely huge, right out of the gate.  Everywhere you turned, there was merch and counterfeit merch. I remember there was a very popular T-shirt that had Bart on it and underneath it said: Underachiever and Proud Of It. My nerdy friend had a counterfeit sweatshirt that said: Overachiever and Proud Of It.  I don't know where his mother found it, but ...
