#SongoftheDay Day After Day (Badfinger)

Image
I'll be honest with you: I didn't know Badfinger was a band until I googled musicians from Wales. I was familiar with this song, but I never knew who it was by. Now I actually understand the joke that mentions them in the Rifftrax riff of Psycho II (yes, that's an actual movie).  (edit: the riff I was thinking of is actually from Amityville 4, which is another lousy sequel.)   If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay St. Judy's Comet (Paul Simon)

Image
My partner has been asked to speak at the memorial service for a lifelong friend who died last month. They'd known each other since they were babies. He is currently working on what he'd like to say, and he's listening to Paul Simon. The last time I walked into the kitchen, this was playing and my partner said, "I love this song." I asked what he loved about it and he said, "Lots of things. But it's about putting a child to bed. What could be better than that?" If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Ordinary Pain (Stevie Wonder, Shirley Brewer)

Image
Spent last night throwing up thanks to one of my medications. Today I'm eating rice and drinking Gatorade. My head hurts. My eyes feel like someone's sticking a thousand needles into them again and again. That's all I've really got for you. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Walking On The Moon (The Police)

Image
When I was a kid, my favourite cousin lived in a small(ish) town. One March Break, my aunt invited me and my sister to stay over for the whole week, and she signed us and my cousin up for art camp. I loved art and I loved my cousin, so this was the best thing ever. One of our art instructors one day said to another, "I love The Police." Except I didn't know The Police was capitalized in her sentence. I thought she was saying, "I love the police." Which seemed very odd to me, because she dressed like a punk, in a leather jacket and everything. Punks and police didn't go together, in my mind. Not sure how long it took me to realize she was talking about a band. Could be minutes, could be years. My memory is kinda sketchy. But every time I hear a song by The Police, I think of that art instructor. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or c...

#SongoftheDay Just a Gigolo (Village People)

Image
My partner and I heard a big band perform this number the other day, and it reminded me of a friend I had in high school--not because he's a gigolo (I don't think he is, but we haven't kept in touch) but because this is the first song I ever heard him sing. He was very talented. He went on to become a professional actor, but I'm not sure what he's up to these days. I've been singing this song around the house, and when I actually think about the words, it occurs to me that this is one of those upbeat tunes that are really depressing when you stop and think about them. Lots of songs from the 50s are like that (not that this song is from the 50s--it was actually written in the 1920s, I believe, and popularized in the 50s).  Fortunately, I have the uncanny ability to sing lyrics without ever thinking about them. I can (and usually do) also listen to songs without processing the words. My partner thinks this is weird. I don't know if it is. We'll have to d...

#SongoftheDay Roll On Down The Highway (BTO)

Image
Every time I walk out of the little grocery store in my partner's small town, I'm singing something. Yesterday it was this song, because it was playing over the speakers. They know their audience. While I was shopping, an employee asked if I needed help with anything, and my brain was screaming, "You're new here!" But I didn't scream that with my voice because I'm trying very hard not to freak people out these days.  So I left the store not only singing this song, but also saying to my partner, "That's how you know you live in a very small town: you can name every person who works at the one and only grocery store." (Okay, I can't actually name them by name, but I can definitely describe them--and I sure do notice when they add an employee to the mix.) If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your ...

#SongoftheDay Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry)

Image
When we got home from the jazz festival, I asked my partner what was his favourite thing we saw or heard there. He surprised me by saying it was this song. I should have known, because I could hear him singing along and you know he rarely sings. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay I Wanna Be Sedated (The Ramones)

Image
I didn't think I'd be able to bring you a song today, but that's been true of most days this week, and I've managed to deliver. My chronic illness is doing me in, and none of my prescription meds seem to be able to handle this attack. I spend my days and nights in pain and awake through it all. It's better when the pain knock me out, but nope. I'm awake with my pain. I'm aware of my pain. No matter which pills I take in which combination, the pain remains. My partner and I have plans we were really looking forward to in the coming days. All I can do is hope that the pain backs off, because my meds aren't up to snuff this week. (I can't believe this has never been our song of the day. I love this song and this video.) If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  e...

#SongoftheDay How Deep Is Your Love? (Bee Gees)

Image
I found a copy of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in my partner's record collections, so I immediately played it. Touching vinyl really takes me back. It's something I haven't done since the 80s, possibly the 90s.   I've probably told this story before, but I specifically remember being in Buffalo NY when record stores were shutting down and pawing through endless stacks of clearance albums with my father.  Feels like forever ago. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay The Model (Kraftwerk)

Image
This song was playing in the background of an episode of Bergerac I was watching the other day. Later on my partner and I were watching something else and one of the characters said something to the effect of, "Why are you all standing around like Kraftwerk?"  That's when my partner told me he once ended up with a Kraftwerk tape, but it wasn't his and he never listened to it. The musical equivalent of "I was just holding it for a friend," am I right? If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head (B.J. Thomas)

Image
I used to love the rain. I used to love storms. I still do, in many ways, but my problem is that rain is my biggest migraine trigger. And we're not talking "Oh boy, I've got a whopping headache." We're talking... well, I'll use last night as an example:  It's raining this morning, and the time coming up on rain is when my symptoms tend to peak. So last night I was completely incapacitated. Could not move. Could not function. I think I was in bed by seven, intending to get up, but unable to even brush my teeth or go to the bathroom. I woke up at 3:45 (in the morning) with vertigo, horrible pain in my head, and still unable to move. Last week when this same thing happened, I was so unable to move that I was lying on my side and I wanted to roll over so my arm wouldn't go numb, but I didn't even have the energy to do that. I couldn't roll. A couple days ago, my partner had to carry my to bed. He took my shoes off and everything. I felt like a ch...

#SongoftheDay I Can't Get Next To You (Al Green)

Image
I woke up with this song in my head. Sort of. When I opened my eyes, I saw my partner in bed beside me, but there was a thick wall of duvet between us. That's why this song popped into my mind. I was beside my partner, but I couldn't get next to him. Because of the duvet. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Mama Can't Buy You Love (Elton John)

Image
This song was playing in the pharmacy when I was waiting to pick up some new prescriptions. Made me so happy, because I hadn't heard it in decades. I started singing along (sorry, fellow pharmacy waiting people) because a wave of nostalgia hit me so hard.  I don't have any specific memories attached to this song, but nostalgia always hits me harder when I haven't heard a song since I was a kid. Music gets planted so deep in my brain (I've read that music actually gets stored in various areas throughout the brain) that I still remember words to songs I haven't heard in ages. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Macho Man (Village People)

Image
We got on the elevator with my neighbour the other day, and when he got off I whispered to my partner, "That's our neighbour," and my partner whispered back, "Each of his arms is thicker than your waist!" Which probably isn't true, but yeah... he's got some serious muscles, that man. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Smokin' in the Boys Room (Brownsville Station)

Image
Late this afternoon, I was lying in my bathtub, fully clothed, singing "Sleeping in the bathtub" to the tune of this song. On our way into the city this morning, my partner and I were sitting at a red light when a car rammed into us from behind. We are not dead. But I am on my third day of a migraine, and being smashed into really didn't help. My head hurts. A lot. When I got home (to my home--the home that's an apartment), the landscapers were busy at work outside my building. These landscapers are better than the old ones my property manager used to hire. The old ones used to run 6 leafblowers outside the building for 8 hours straight. You think I'm joking, but I'm really, really not. They only broke for lunch. The new company is much more thoughtful. They only brought out two leafblowers, and only at the end of the day, to clean some debris from our walkways.  All the same, leafblowers are very loud and grating. Migraines don't like loud and gratin...

#SongoftheDay Music Box Dancer (Frank Mills)

Image
I'd completely forgotten this song existed until I heard an ice cream truck playing it the other day. Okay, so the ice cream truck wasn't actually playing this song. It was playing some other song that reminded me of this song, but close enough. I read an article about something called a Death Cafe, which is a hosted event for people who are close to death. They can attend to talk about death in an open way. A lot of people find it easier to talk to strangers about their own impending death, because talking to family or friends is so fraught with emotion. One of the topics they discussed at the death cafe was: what sounds would you like to hear while you are dying? (reminds me of Soylent Green...)  Most people said: birds, nature, children's laughter. While my partner and I were very ill recently, we were lying on my bed in the city with the window wide open. I live across from a park, so the sounds we get through the window are primarily bird songs and children's lau...

#SongoftheDay Ladies Night (Kool and the Gang)

Image
You know what I would love to find? Information on menopause and menopause-related topics aimed at trans and nonbinary people. In case I haven't mentioned it lately, I am genderqueer or nonbinary or something (still haven't found a word that resonates with me, to be honest). When I want information about vaginal dryness and I get a YouTuber talking about "us ladies" and our "lady parts" I feel like I'm covered in slime (which would probably help, at this stage). This delivery is not for me.  I try to power through and ignore the "lady" stuff because menopause is terrible and I need information, but I find I just can't handle it. I need inclusive information. I need information that doesn't send me packing. Maybe there are resources out there for people like me and I just haven't found them yet.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most a...

#SongoftheDay Looks Like Meringue (John Scofield)

Image
So, look... I have a very bad habit of giving myself food poisoning. This almost always involves eggs. The first time I poisoned myself with eggs was after that big east coast blackout that happened in the early 2000s. 2003? I'm too lazy to look it up right now. If you lived through it you probably remember it because power was out for days, which is pretty unusual in major cities. Anyway, I had a carton of eggs in my fridge that was already 6 months expired and then it lived through this blackout. I can't say for sure why I ate those eggs, except that I was very poor and also stupid, but that was my first experience with egg-related food poisoning. A couple years ago I poisoned myself with homemade mayonnaise. This week I poisoned myself by eating raw meringue while making my partner a pie. He told me not to eat raw meringue, but by then it was too late.  The salmonella is a part of me now. It's been with me for days. If you're wondering how you can support me...

#SongoftheDay Knock Three Times (Tony Orlando and Dawn)

Image
Further proof that I was wrong in thinking music videos were invented in the 80s. This one was made in 1970. It just so happens that I wasn't born yet in 1970, so I can't help wondering where videos like this were broadcast. We didn't have our MTV yet (or our MuchMusic, for my fellow Canadians), so where did people watch music videos like this one? I asked my partner, but he has no memory of music videos existing back in the 70s. So I'm still at a loss. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely.
