#SongoftheDay You Send Me (Gregory Porter)

Image
My partner was telling me about Sam Cooke singing this song on Ed Sullivan and it immediately rising to the top of the charts. I love this song, but we've already listened to the original version , so today we've got an excellent cover. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. I'm also an  Amazon Influencer,  so hopefully I can make a little pocket change when you buy stuff by clicking through  my affiliate links . I also recommend subscribing to my newsletter. I generally e-mail subscribers with a weekly update, and I would LOVE to have you on the list.  Click here to sign up:  http://eepurl.com/R4b11 See you soon! Giselle

#SongoftheDay I've Seen That Face Before (Grace Jones)

Image
This song is based on an Astor Piazzolla piece called Libertango. If you've read a novel I wrote called ANONYMOUS , you'll know that the music of Astor Piazzolla figures prominently toward the end. There's a scene at the symphony where the main character and her husband and the man they've welcomed into their home and their bed encounter... well, I'd be spoiling the story if I told you. Guess you'll just have to read the book for yourself to find out.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Too Good (Arlo Parks)

Image
The other day we were doing a crossword puzzle and Arlo Parks was the answer. I was like... crosswords know Arlo Parks? Wow. When I hopped on over to Youtube to grab a video, this one was magically suggested to me. Google is creepy that way: they know what you want before you do. Anyway, I feel this video and this song. It's a good one.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay All Around the World (Lisa Stansfield and Barry White)

Image
I used to go for night walks all the time before I shacked up with my partner. Now it's very rare. But I did go out around 11 at night last week to buy milk. Before covid, my neighbourhood used to be a ghost town after dark.  I was really surprised to find so many people out.  Maybe that was owing to the full moon--who knows? Anyway, as I waited to cross the street, there was a vehicle also waiting and this song was playing inside. Blast from the past.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Go Widdit (Zaki Ibrahim)

Image
Yesterday we listened to Riit and, honestly, I would be very happy to just play every single track from her album "ataataga" for you.  It's one of those flawless albums where you don't want to skip any tracks.  They work perfectly together. Zaki Ibrahim is featured on one track, so what better time to listen to her music? I can't get enough of this song, not to mention this music video--reminds me of the 80s while also appealing to my queer sensibilities. What more can a listener ask for? #SongoftheDay Back Again (Julian Taylor)

What a great track! This week we're listening to music from Juno nominees in the Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year category. It's great to see Black Indigenous representation.  The neighbourhood I grew up in has a large Black Indigenous population. Two years ago I met a group of young people from the neighbourhood who were taking part in a program (taught by a fellow Black Indigenous instructor) where they were not only building on their knowledge of traditional skills in areas like beading, but also learning different ways to make a living in the arts sector.  Their instructor is an amazing woman. She taught me a bit of beading too, but I forget everything I learned because my brain doesn't hold stuff.  I do remember the instructor, though!  She was one of those unforgettable people where you get the sense they must be older than they look, but they have this energy about them that's vibrant and youthful.  Anyway, I'm rambling. Enjoy today's song! If...

#SongoftheDay Hell N Back (Bakar)

Excess hormones suck, but they suck the most on days that are too emotional to begin with. I've got to do something today that's extremely challenging, emotionally. Even if I were a Vulcan, I'd have trouble with today's tasks.  It's a difficult day to begin with, but I've got hormones heaped on top of my difficulties, and they're making everything so much harder.  I just want to go back to bed and cry, but I can't because I have sacrifices to make.   It's a difficult day.  It's a hormone-infused day. Wish me luck. I'll need it. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair (Nina Simone)

Image
It's National Novel Writing Month, and I've decided to hack away at one of my works-in-progress from the Lesbian Diaries series. This particular book is a little different from the rest, because it involves a haunting--perhaps even a succubus? I guess we'll have to wait and see.  I'm not far in. Today, as I was reading over the first few chapters, which I wrote at the hospital while my mother was recovering from surgery earlier this year, I came across this line: Black is the colour of my true love's hair.  And that's why we're listening to Nina Simone's gorgeous rendition of this traditional tune.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Kiss From A Rose (Seal)

Image
*swoon* I remember watching the reboot of the National Lampoon's Vacation movie on TV at two in the morning, and it was kind of a joke that this was the dad's favourite song. But you know what? This song is great. I don't care if the movies consider it a nerdy dad song. Maybe I'm just a nerdy dad, at heart. Maybe we all are. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Dance With My Father (Luther Vandross)

Image
I was just looking at a post of songs for grieving on a funeral company's website, and this one topped the list. Sorry to make you cry again! If you are mourning right now, I want you to know that you are not alone. I'm right there with you. And music is ALWAYS there. I know it helps me. I hope it helps you.  To date, I've posted more than 400 songs and daily hellos on this blog. If you're ever feeling lonely, I invite you to peruse them. The main reason I started this site was to feel less alone while reaching out to others who felt isolated. I know how isolating grief can be, especially if you come from a family like mine, where everyone retreats instead of coming together when we're sad. I hope all these posts, and all this music we listen to together, can be helpful. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people...

#SongoftheDay Orinoco Flow (Enya)

I mentioned yesterday that I'm grieving the loss of an Irish friend, so we're listening to more Irish music today. I always liked this song, and it strikes me as a good one for mourning. #SongoftheDay alley-oop (Dijon)

Image
The last time we featured a Dijon song here on the blog, we all went wild for it. I think that's because his music has that perfect combination of sweetness and honesty. So here we have another gorgeous track from the album How Do You Feel About Getting Married ? (That's one of my all-time favourite album titles, by the way.) #SongoftheDay Arctic Sea (Che)

I mentioned in a previous post that SKETCH Working Arts has been introducing me to a bunch of new-to-me artists via their Art in Pandemic series. The latest video I watched was Che's, which I encourage you to take a look at here . That voice! Wow! It was absolutely worth tracking down the Soundcloud mentioned in that video, because that's where I located this brilliant song, which I'm sure you'll enjoy as much as I do. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. #SongoftheDay Hello (Lionel Richie)

Image
Last year around this time, I was scouring the internet for information about garage sales: dates, times, locations. I knew my partner and I would soon be building a life together, and I wanted to be prepared. I felt like I needed... I don't know what. Stuff that wasn't his or mine. Stuff that was ours. And I felt like that stuff should have a story--a history. I don't know if it was a meme going around, or if some individual was particularly creative in their marketing, but I remember seeing one garage sale sign that had a picture of Lionel Richie on it and said: Hello! Is it DEALS you're looking for? That line is, of course, a paraphrasing of this song's chorus. Because of COVID, garage sales aren't a thing this year--not where I live. People still want to get rid of stuff, since they've had time to root through all their belongings, so I've noticed a lot of people setting up tables on their driveways, putting out their garage sale items, and s...

#SongoftheDay You Send Me (Sam Cooke)

Image
We've had an upsetting evening, over here. This morning, my partner found out one of his cousins died. He had an okay day--in fact, he was oddly upbeat at times.  And then, during dinner, he broke down. He cried and I cried and, after dinner, we lit a candle for his late cousin. It was hard to come out of the tears.  While we washed dishes, my partner played Sam Cooke, because he knows how much I love Sam Cooke's music.  This is the first song that came on.  It couldn't be more perfect. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Falling In Love (Gloria Estefan)

Image
One of my sisters is a decade younger than I am, so I remember all the big events of her baby days. I specifically remember that this song was on the radio a lot when she was little, and she got excited whenever it came on. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, my baby sister's first word was: Uh-oh! The word was applicable, and used by her, in a wide variety of circumstances. I wonder if anyone has ever told my sister the story of her first word. It's funny how, if you have siblings, you just assume they remember everything you remember--and that they remember it exactly the way you do. Who remembers saying their first word? No one. You only know about it because someone recited the story of your life back to you.  There are so many life events we've talked about, in my family, that my baby sister was surprised (shocked, scandalized) to learn. Even if she was around, she was too young to remember some of the most significant shit that went down. She's the lucky one, there. ...

This is just the most beautiful song of all time. It's from a new album called " How Do You Feel About Getting Married? " So many albums with great names are coming out this month. I love it. #SongoftheDay A Sunday Kind of Love (Etta James)

Image
I had a Sunday kind of love this week. It was the best Sunday in recent memory. My partner and I woke up basking in each other's warmth. We spent an easy morning together. I got a lot of work done while he read the paper. We watched a bit of news, did a bit of exercise (stretching etc. in front of the TV). He made us grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch. Later on, we went for a walk in the summertime weather. I put sunblock on my face, but didn't think to get my neck. So that was red when we got home. For dinner, we ate the frozen pizza my partner's been saving for a special occasion. And salad. And a glass of wine (well, half a glass for me--as I get older, my body tends to reject alcohol). Then we watched a series on DVD and I took a warm bath and we went to bed. Oh, and we did a crossword puzzle somewhere in there. It was a perfect Sunday. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do i...

#SongoftheDay The Garden Song (John Denver)

Image
Here's a song I grew up with. I wasn't familiar with the word "fertile" back then, so I always thought you needed a piece of "turtle ground." Made sense. This is turtle island, after all. This song popped into my head this morning, when I looked out at my balcony garden. I haven't pulled out last year's dead plants yet.  I keep meaning to do it, but I keep meaning to do a lot of things. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.
