#SongoftheDay I Will Follow Him (Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act)

My partner got up from the couch and said he was going upstairs. He asked if he should turn off the TV and I said sure, because I would be following him upstairs.

Naturally, I sang this song at him as I followed.

When we arrived upstairs, he turned to me and said, "My mother once heard that song and warned me that if anyone ever said those words to me, I should run."

I was like haha, too late, you're stuck with me now.

Additionally, I recall seeing Sister Act in a theatre in Florida. Not a very vibrant memory (a multiplex in Florida is much like a multiplex anywhere else), but there you have it.

What is this? Where am I? What's it all about?

All good questions. Let me explain. My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day, starting June 1 2019, to share with you whichever song pops into my head. Why?  What's the point? Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. #SongoftheDay I Dreamt We Spoke Again (Death Cab for Cutie)

Last winter, I listened to this Death Cab for Cutie album ( Thank You for Today ) on repeat. I'd probably heard it 20 or 30 times before I clued in to the fact that it was a break-up album, and maybe I was listening to it so much because, last fall, I went through a break-up and never really dealt with it. If you've known me for a while, you've heard me talk about my girlfriend, Sweet. What you don't know is that she isn't my girlfriend anymore. We broke up while my grandmother was dying, which is a stupid time to break up with someone, but the relationship had run its course, we were in very different places emotionally, and it was time to say goodbye. I was singing "Stacy's Mom" as a method of self-soothing (hey, it works) when I started to wonder: did the band Fountains of Wayne name themselves after Wayne Fontana? Turns out the answer is no. They named themselves after a garden centre. But did the garden centre name themselves after Wayne Fontana? Probably not. Another somewhat relevant question would be: how can I, as a fully-fledged queer person, embrace such a heterocentric tune? Well, I grew up with it. And, anyway, this song is from the 60s. #SongoftheDay Wake Up in the Morning Rice Krispies Jingle (The Rolling Stones)

So apparently The Rolling Stones wrote this Rice Krispies jingle? I came across it when I was looking for that commercial from maybe the 80s or 90s where the dad makes Rice Krispie squares and it's so easy, but he dusts flour all over himself to make it look like it was an overwhelming experience. Remember that? Nobody else seems to, and I couldn't find it on Youtube. Maybe I made it up.  Anyway, I had leftover marshmallows from our cottage trip, so I made a batch of Rice Krispie squares today. I was hoping they'd turn out big and burly and HARD, but instead they're soft and gooey and chewy. I'll still probably eat the whole tray, which is a little worrying since they contain 40 marshmallows. That's a lot of marshmallows to eat in one day. I'm in pain and seeking out the coziest of cozies. Hetty Wainthropp is way up there. I'm in bed with BritBox, hoping I'll come across an episode I missed on TV, but I'm pretty sure I've seen them all. Rewatching the later ones anyway. No reason not to. I was such a fan of Keeping Up Appearances, and Hetty Wainthropp felt like an odd continuation of that show--like, if Hyacinth were actually nice to Richard, and they took in a stray teenager and opened a detective agency?  It's basically the same show, if you look at it that way. YouTube now seems to be working overtime to prove to me that music videos existed in the 70s.  Okay, I admit it: I was wrong when I said music videos were invented in the 80s. Clearly they existed in the disco era. This Boney M video was made in 1976, from what I gather. I'll give them this: they found a location they liked and they stuck with it. #SongoftheDay Coffee (Sylvan Esso)

The last time I drank coffee, I spent the whole day throwing up.  It happened to be the same day I started taking a prescription medication that is known to cause nausea, so I put it down to that.  I almost never drink coffee anymore, because it makes my heart do weird things, but I had a few sips this morning and I've been sick as a dog ever since. I'm still on the same prescription medication, and I also take a number of supplements recommended by my doctor to help control symptoms of my chronic illness.  Nearly every medication and supplement I take is known to cause nausea, stomach cramps, and/of diarrhea. I've mentioned before that every day is a delicate balancing act of eating enough food (and the right kind of food) so I can take my meds and not spend the rest of the day feeling like I'm going to puke. I guess we've learned that coffee has no place in my life anymore.  Oh well.  I used to be physiologically addicted to coffee. I went off it cold turkey...

For Easter, my partner gave me a chocolate bunny. But you know what else he gave me that's even better than chocolate? No, not that. Well, yes, that too, but that's not what I'm talking about. He bought me some of the supplements my doctor put me on. They're pretty expensive (to me--I don't know what qualifies as expensive to other people anymore) but once I started buying a better brand instead of store brand, I noticed a dramatic reduction in the frequency and severity of attacks (when my chronic illness flares up, it's called an "attack" in the literature--how's that for frightening?). So I'd been talking to my partner about how the better supplements really seem to be making a difference, but BOY are they ever pricy and, sure enough, he goes out and buys them for me as a gift.
