#SongoftheDay Back to the Future Theme (The Outatime Orchestra)

Image
My partner and I watched Back to the Future recently. He'd never seen it before. We got a DVD box set out from the library and I said to him, "Oh, this set has all three movies in it." He came home from the library the day after we'd watched the first one and told me, "I was about to return this when I realized all three movies are in here." I was so proud of myself for not saying, "Yeah, I told you that! Don't you ever listen to me?" heh. Life goes more smoothly when I don't lash out about things that really do not matter. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Stereophonic Sound from Silk Stockings (Janis Paige, Fred Astaire)

Image
This song popped into my head just now. Not sure why. Not even sure why I remember it so well. Before today, I'd only ever heard it once, when I watched the movie Silk Stockings on TV as a teenager. It felt like a classic, to me, but I'm not actually sure if too many people have seen it. And, in fact, this song is the only thing I remember about the movie. You'll have to turn your volume up-up-up to hear this one. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay I've Got No Strings (The Andrews Sisters, Glenn Miller Orchestra)

Image
I woke up with this song in my head, which bothered me deeply because I would say I do have strings and I am grateful for those strings. But I also woke up full of anxiety because my partner wants to move again, and moving is such a big thing. It's probably a smart decision. We never put down roots in the small town where he bought a house, and we kind of never wanted to. Moving here was a snap decision, and right away there were so many things where we were like... oh, this was a big mistake. Not that it's been all bad. But there are just so many reasons to leave, not the least of which is lack of access to sufficient healthcare. Also, it's expensive. Also, transit is extremely limited. Also, also, also... When I'm anxious, I am not at my best. But what I've realized this time around that I didn't realize the last time my partner wanted to move is that he is anxious too. None of this is easy or comfortable for him. We are experiencing a lot of the same emotio...

#SongoftheDay Faith in the Power of Love (Rozalla)

Image
Okay, last track from Cool as Ice. There are obviously more songs in the movie, but most of them are by Vanilla Ice. This outfit reminds me of the Friends episode where Ross gets stuck in his leather pants. Menopause really gets you thinking: how much am I going to sweat if I wear this? heh If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Gonna Catch You (Lonnie Gordon)

Another track from Cool as Ice. Okay, so it was in a bad movie. So what? This is a flat-out banger, if you as me. #SongoftheDay Hideaway (Randy Moore and Cindy Smith)

Image
A rare treat from the 1987 movie R.O.T.O.R. which I have seen many times, courtesy of RiffTrax.  Most of what I do when I'm ill (aside from sleep) is listen to RiffTrax or old MST3k episodes I have seen a million times already. I find them comforting. Not really sure why. Possibly because MST3k got me through one of my worst depressive periods ever. Laughing when you are severely depressed feels amazing.  When I'm sick... I don't know. When I'm sick for extended periods, life begins to feel pointless really quickly. Being able to laugh at something (inwardly, this time, because laughing out loud brings on painful coughing fits) does tend to give me the feeling that maybe life is worth living, even if I'm not completely sure why. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavou...

#SongoftheDay Julie Christie (Lorraine Bowen)

Image
Listening to Ice Cream yesterday and mentioning the words "better than chocolate" made me think, of course, of the 1999 Canadian lesbian rom-com Better Than Chocolate. I saw that film pretty soon after it was released. It blew my queer young adult mind. Not because the movie was about lesbians--I'd seen movies that had lesbians in them before--but because it was a movie with lesbians in it that wasn't sad and tortured.  The other movies I'd seem with lesbians in them had been FILMS. Cinema. This was a movie. Practically a flick. It was a comedy. To be honest with you, I didn't really like it. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. But that made sense because I've never been a rom-com fan. It's just not my genre. I loved that the movie existed, though. I loved that people had brought this movie that I didn't even really like into the world. I have no idea whether Better Than Chocolate made a ripple worldwide. Canadian content often doesn...

#SongoftheDay You Only Live Twice Main Theme (City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra)

Image
This theme was playing on the radio while my partner and I were eating dinner. I hadn't heard the radio host introduce the piece, and I said to my partner, "This is so familiar. What is it?"  Apparently he said something. We'll come back to that.  I kept eating and then asked him, "It's movie music, right?"  He gave me this flat look and then said, "James Bond. It's John Barry music."  That's when I realized he had already told me exactly that information and I hadn't heard what he'd said, and instead of asking him to repeat himself, I'd merely nodded. I did all this without realizing it, in the moment. It didn't click that I hadn't heard him. It didn't click that I nodded instead of acknowleding that I hadn't heard him. None of this was conscious. So I guess I'd better book an appointment at the hearing clinic, because the hearing's even worse than the vision, and the vision is pretty bad. I've ...

#SongoftheDay Cow Cow Boogie (Dorothy Dandridge)

Image
I've been falling down some fascinating YouTube rabbit holes lately, and landing on songs I've never heard of. Like this one. The line about "local weed" reminded me of my partner's best friend, who helps out people in her neighbourhood in small but meaningful ways. An old man she knows wanted to grow his own medicinal marijuana (it is legal to do so in our juristiction) but he lived in a small apartment with no balcony, and didn't think he could manage it. You know that old real estate rule about buying the worst house on the best street? That's my partner's best friend's house. It is tiny, but it's got a bit of a yard. So she offered to grow cannabis for this old man, and she did and it worked out just fine. Until the day she walked into her yard to find some fancy-ass woman pulling the plants up by their roots. She was like ummm who the hell are you and why are you destroying my garden? Turned out the fancy-ass woman was a real estate ...

#SongoftheDay Shaft (Isaac Hayes)

Image
You probably heard that Richard Roundtree, the actor who played Shaft, died the other day. I've lost track of how many times I've listened to Isaac Hayes' theme from the film since I heard the news. Hard to believe Isaac Hayes himself died fifteen years ago. Where does the time go? #SongoftheDay I Will Follow Him (Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act)

Image
My partner got up from the couch and said he was going upstairs. He asked if he should turn off the TV and I said sure, because I would be following him upstairs. Naturally, I sang this song at him as I followed. When we arrived upstairs, he turned to me and said, "My mother once heard that song and warned me that if anyone ever said those words to me, I should run." I was like haha, too late, you're stuck with me now. Additionally, I recall seeing Sister Act in a theatre in Florida. Not a very vibrant memory (a multiplex in Florida is much like a multiplex anywhere else), but there you have it. #SongoftheDay Born to be Cheap (Divine)

Image
I needed new pyjamas, so, naturally, I went to the supermarket. They sell clothes for cheap. I am nothing if not cheap. Whenever people buy me pyjamas (and by "people" I mean my mother, because she is the only person who buys me pyjamas), they buy me flannel pyjamas. As a permimenopausal person, let me tell you, flannel does not work. Even when I sleep naked, I wake up drenched in sweat. So I needed to find something I could sleep in that wasn't hot, and what I found (at the supermarket) were these adorable soft fluttery little shorts. And they were made of a printed fabric. And that print was of sea flora, tridents, and purple Ursula heads.  Ursula, from The Little Mermaid. Since I loved Disney villains as a kid AND they were on the clearance rack, I bought them and paired them with a tank top I got for $3. The reason we're listening to Divine is that, in case you weren't aware, the character of Ursula in The Little Mermaid was modelled on Divine. Now I...

#SongoftheDay Singin' in the Rain (Gene Kelly)

Image
When you get to a certain point of illness, there's nothing else you can focus on. That's where I'm at today. I can barely string these sentences together. It's taking all my energy to type these words, and I'm typo-ing a lot. My health is atrocious. I'm in terrible pain. I'm still taking care of my partner. I still haven't gone to the ER. I'm scared to go. I don't want to leave my partner alone. I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid. I don't know why I chose Singin' in the Rain as our song of the day. I do feel rained on, but I'm definitely not happy about it. I did enjoy watching the dancing in this video, though. It gave me four minutes of distraction. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help ...

#SongoftheDay Theme from "Laura" (Morton Gould and his Orchestra, Max Pollikoff violin)

Image
People leave all sorts of things in the laundry room of my apartment building. If one tenant doesn't want or need something, they leave it there for other tenants to take. Today it was cat food. One time I found an entire watermelon down there. A couple weeks ago, it was DVDs. New DVDs of old movies. One of those movies was the 1944 film noir classic, "Laura." I love films of that era, but I'd never seen this particular one. Neither had my partner, so we watched it the other night. We both enjoyed it. Kept us guessing, since it's a murder mystery. Did its job. And it did its job in only an hour and twenty-eight minutes. I think that's one reason I like old movies. They tend to be shorter than the films of today. I've got menopause brain and pain brain. I do not have much of an attention span. My partner used to tell me I could probably build up my attention span, if I worked at it. Then he started cancer treatment. Now he understands the no attenti...

#SongoftheDay I Sing the Body Electric (62nd Annual Grammy Awards Finale)

Image
I actually can't stand this song, even though I loved Fame (the movie AND the TV show) back in the 80s. I attended a very Fame-like high school as a teenager, and we sang this as a choral number one year. I love singing, and I usually enjoyed any song we sang just because of the community feeling you get when you're singing with a hundred other people, but this number didn't do it for me. I still hate it. But I chose it as our song of the day because last week I published the 21st installment in my "Sexy Surprises" series of 6-story erotic anthologies. This book is called " Good Vibes, Sexy Surprises " and all the stories feature vibrators. And that made me think of this song. So there's your connection. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Pa...

#SongoftheDay Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (Rousseau)

Image
I will always associate this piece with the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, which was one of my favourite movies of the 80s. It came out at the absolute perfect time, for me. I'm sure I've mentioned in the past that I wanted to be an animator when I was young. Part of that was because I loved drawing, and part of that was because I loved cartoons. Have I told you this story before? I can't remember. I've talked about it on Twitter, but I can't recall if I ever mentioned it here on the blog: when I was a kid, there was a lot of domestic violence in my household. I had a Smurfs blanket on my bed, and at night I would hide underneath it and pretend I was in Cartoon World, where I could play with the characters I loved from Saturday morning cartoons. When Roger Rabbit came out, it affirmed my escapist desires by presenting a world in which cartoons and humans coexisted. That's where I wanted to live. I haven't seen Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in... oh, 30 years, ...

#SongoftheDay Jailhouse Rock (Elvis Presley)

Image
Yesterday I was thinking about how we might see ourselves one way but strangers might see us as someone totally different. It brought to mind the time I was on a bus in Scarborough and I was sitting near some teens.  One girl was talking really loudly (exactly the way I used to talk when I was her age) and I think trying to scandalize me (I was the only other person at the back of the bus) by telling her friends she had to go visit her father in jail. I just remember thinking, "Oh, honey, if it's me you're trying to shock you'll have to do better than that." It might have been Mother's Day or some other special occasion because I remember I was dressed much nicer than usual.  Maybe I give the impression of being the kind of person whose father (grandfather, uncle...) was never incarcerated, but looks can be deceiving.  Oddly enough, this was one of my father's favourite movies... If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and vis...

#SongoftheDay Jurassic Park (Weird Al Yankovic)

Image
I've had this song in my head since last week, when I heard McArthur Park on the radio. Then last night, my partner and I watched a documentary about sea creatures around Cocos Island The narrator mentioned that this was the spot that had inspired the fictional location of Jurassic Park. That sealed it: I was destined to bring you this song today.  btw I remember watching this music video for the first time at a friend's house. I can't remember which friend. It was on a little TV in somebody's basement. Not much of a memory, is it? If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Just Hanging Out (Damien Carter)

My partner spent 4 consecutive nights watching Oscar-nominated films on Netflix. I spent those same 4 nights watching Birdemic Live, courtesy or RiffTrax . #SongoftheDay Soul Bossa Nova (Quincy Jones)

Image
I mentioned this piece when we listened to Dream Warriors' "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style," but it just showed up as a crossword clue and, even though I could easily sing the tune for my partner, I could not name it until we had a whole bunch of letters filled it.  Here we have the original, which you will probably recognize from Austin Powers. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.
