#SongoftheDay Rama Lama Ding Dong (Sha Na Na)

Image
I don't always understand why YouTube pitches me the videos it does. After I'd watched the Kathleen Edwards track we featured yesterday, YouTube decided that I would definitely want to watch Sha Na Na. At first, I didn't think I could get on board. And then I spent the next hour watching Sha Na Na videos. So maybe YouTube knows me better than I know myself. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Luna Llena (Arca)

Image
There was a full moon recently--a blue moon, in fact--but I didn't see it. We were still in the city that night, but you can't see the moon from my apartment and we didn't have the energy to leave my building.  A stark contrast to the previous full moon, which we went out in search of.  We learned, at that time of night, that we had to walk down the street behind my building until we got to the first cross road.  From there, if we stood at the corner of the sidewalk, we could just see the moon over another apartment building. There was a satellite dish somewhat in the way, but we could see it. A stark contrast, also, to the night my partner woke me at 2:30 in the morning and brought me into the backyard to watch the shooting stars.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica...

#SongoftheDay Pee-Wee's Playhouse Theme Song (Cyndi Lauper)

Image
As you've probably heard by now, Paul Reubens died last week. I loved Pee-Wee's Playhouse, as a kid. As an adult, I watched a documentary about the art director on the show, which I found illuminating at the time, but remember nothing about now because my brain no longer holds onto information. When I went to YouTube to grab this clip, I spotted a video saying that Cyndi Lauper sang this theme song. Wasn't sure if that was true, but the internet agrees. Apparently she copped to it in her autobiography. Makes perfect sense, actually. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Dream Weaver (Gary Wright)

Image
Every hour at the hospital feels like five. By the time we got home from two radiation treatments yesterday (one first thing in the morning, one late in the afternoon), I felt like we'd been at my partner's cancer care centre for years. Between his two bouts of radiation, my partner had a check-in with his oncologist and some other healthcare professionals. They were concerned that his blood pressure was very low, and he was notably dehydrated. One of the many horrible side effects of the radiation he's receiving is that it causes extreme pain in his mouth and throat, making it difficult to eat and drink. He's doing his best, but he's also exhausted all the time. It's hard to drink your 8 glasses of water a day when you're always asleep. So, anyway, they put him on an IV drip, which made him cold despite the warm blanket the nurse had put on him. (The nurses at this hospital are amazing. The are so compassionate. I truly love them.) I had to run out to a...

#SongoftheDay She Blinded Me With Science (Thomas Dolby)

Image
I'm trying to work, but I'm mostly watching the Rifftrax edition of a movie called Strange Impersonations about a scientist who fakes her own death. At one point something explodes and MJ goes, "Science!" That's why we're listening to this song today. #SongoftheDay Tango Till They're Sore (Tom Waits)

Image
This song popped into my head while I was eating leftover pasta for lunch. There's so much overwhelming emotion hovering around us these days. I'm writing this the day after a full moon.   Last night (the night of the full moon), as we were eating dinner, I just started crying and I couldn't stop. I couldn't eat.  So I gave up and put my food in the fridge. My partner didn't want to surrender to emotion. He wanted to pretend everything was okay and just have a normal evening. I tried, but I just kept crying. I'm not even sad. It's not even my sadness. It's his. I've absorbed it. #SongoftheDay Burning Down the House (Talking Heads)

Image
This weekend, some lady parked in front of our neighbour's house. She got out and said to her husband, "Oops haha we're parked in front of a fire hydrant. Oh well!  Hope we don't get caught." And she just left her car there and went on her merry way. Getting caught is the least of my hopes for this motorist.  If she doesn't care that her actions are putting other people's homes and possibly lives in danger, I hope karma takes some long and drawn-out action against her. My best friend's house burned down, as did the home of a former publisher of mine, so I'm not particularly tolerant of people who think a convenient parking spot is more important than the safety of an entire neighbourhood. Now let's decompress with David Byrne. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay qaumajuapik (Riit)

Riit was featured in the track we listened to yesterday, so we've got her again today. I love her music. I love this sound, with its mix of traditional throat singing and contemporary electronica. It works so well.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Spill the Wine (Eric Burdon & WAR)

Image
Last week, my partner was really down on himself because he broke a glass jar one day and then the next day he broke another glass jar.  It wasn't a big deal, but it was a big deal to him. Well, today I'm alone at my apartment.  Earlier in the day, I spilled a bucket of water on my carpet.  About three minutes later, I kicked over an entire cup of coffee on the same carpet.  People as clumsy as I am should not put drinks on the floor. I wish my partner had been here to see me make such a huge mess.  Hopefully it would make him feel okay-er about accidentally breaking things. #SongoftheDay Revolution 9 (The Beatles)

#SongoftheDay Hole / The Used (Girls Rituals)

Image
Even though I'm not a religious person, I really like the idea of Lent. Making a change for 40 days is an interesting way to test the waters of a new life.  The first time I gave Lent a go (which was probably only two or three years ago), I decided to give up meat. It went really well.  It went so well that I thought I might just give it up forever.  I went back pretty fast, after forty days were up, but it was still a worthwhile exercise. I don't remember what I gave up last year, but this year I've decided to take a break from social media during Lent. Should be good for my mental health.  I always end up feeling pretty awful after scrolling through Twitter for hours on end. My big concern was: where am I going to hear about new music?  I follow musicians I enjoy on Twitter, and that's how I hear they've come out with something new. Well, today I hopped over to YouTube to start schedule posts for this site, and one of the first videos suggested to me was...

#SongoftheDay Black Cloud - ESPer99 Remix (Girls Rituals)

Image
Black Cloud is a song I can easily listen to for five hours straight. It's been our song of the day in the past. Now there's an entire album of Black Cloud remixes available!  Watching Devi film in a laundry room is seriously stressing me out.  I can count on one hand the number of times I've done laundry in my building's laundry room since the start of covid. I was scared enough, as it was, to be in a confined space with strangers during a pandemic, but to make matters worse, the last time I was there I was harassed so violently security had to be called. So now I'm doubly traumatized around laundry rooms. My clothes were really starting to stink, so my partner was sweet enough to do my laundry for me. Before that, I was just washing socks and underwear in the sink. Sometimes life is not fun. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you ...

#SongoftheDay Is It Cold In The Water? (SOPHIE)

Image
You've probably heard that 34-year-old trans musician SOPHIE died in an accident last weekend. I encourage you to read this great article about her life and work.   Read also this moving tribute written by Morgan M. Page .  This song is just gorgeous. It's breaking my heart to listen to it right now. #SongoftheDay Heto Na (Pantayo)

Image
I think I've been promising to share this particular track for... oh... the past year? But there are just so many incredible songs on Pantayo's self-titled release that I guess I took my time in getting to this one. (Kaingin gets stuck in my head all the time, and I'm never mad about that.)  If you don't yet have your copy of Pantayo, now is a great time to buy it:  https://pantayo.bandcamp.com/album/pantayo If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Oceanica (San Fermin)

Image
I had this song in my head, but I could only remember snippets, not the title or the artist.  It took me forever to figure out it was San Fermin, because I always equate San Fermin with the female voice, and this track isn't that.   Oceanica comes from an album called Belong , which I have listened to a million times and love to death even though it does feel inconsistent to have different vocalists.  I actually found that really jarring the first few times I listened, but I got over it because the music is so embracing.   This is one of the albums I turn to when I'm having bad mental health stuff, because it takes me right out of myself.  I can't remember if I've ever played a track called "Bride" for you, but I am truly obsessed with it ("suddenly I'm dissociating...") #SongoftheDay Whip It (Devo)

Image
Yesterday I used the word "devolution" and was shocked to discover that I'd never posted any Devo on this site. Pretty surprising, considering this is a band I've seen live in concert. I think they wore the hats. I'm pretty sure they did a costume change on stage. Memories are hazy. #SongoftheDay La fille du vent (Olivia Ruiz)

Image
There's an episode of Frasier where Roz has to do community service in a retirement residence. An elderly woman who lives there says something to the effect of: "Every day, I look in the mirror and you know what I say? Ahh!!!" That's what I did this morning. I looked in the mirror, spotted a few new grey hairs, and went, "Ahh!"   My partner was very concerned and asked what was wrong.  I told him it was nothing, just MORE grey hairs.  He said, "Sorry--that's my fault."  Last week, he pointed out that ever since we've been living together, my "eleven lines"--those two vertical frown lines between my eyebrows--have become permanent residents of my face. One of the lyrics toward the end of this song talks about her father telling her "que je suis son cheveux blancs"--that she is the cause of his grey hair. That's not at all how I feel about my partner, but the proof is in the pudding.  Or, rather, the proof is in my ha...

#SongoftheDay Once in a Lifetime (Talking Heads)

Image
I have featured this song in the past, but the version I put up was a cover by Kermit the Frog.  Let's have the original, shall we?   This song popped into my head the other week, when my partner and I visited a river to look for fish. Salmon, to be specific. This autumn, we have visited four stretches of river here in Toronto to watch the salmon run. You could almost call it a hobby. Anyway, I don't know whether it was "the rocks and stones" or the water itself, but our surroundings brought this song to mind. That's why we're listening to it today. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.
