#SongoftheDay Where is the Love? (Black Eyed Peas)

Image
My partner and I have been watching a lot of major league baseball lately. This song gets played a lot when they're cutting to commercials. Years ago, my mother used to get free tickets to Jays games from her boss. He had season's tickets, but he often couldn't use them, so he'd give them away at the last minute. My mother would phone me, because I could be expected to be available on short notice, but I wasn't enthusiastic about going. I have fond childhood memories of going to Jays games back when they were played at Exhibition Stadium, but as an adult, I found baseball super boring. I will admit that my mother would sometimes bribe me with candy. Even though I was a full-grown adult at the time, the candy bribes worked.  For a while.  Then I started to find the games so boring, even candy wouldn't cut it. Now? I don't find baseball boring anymore. Not sure why. I only started watching games because my partner was watching them, and I just wanted to cu...

#SongoftheDay The Weight (The Band ft. The Staples Singers)

Image
Robbie Robertson died last week. You probably know that by now, but it hit my partner pretty hard. He loved The Band. He owns The Last Waltz, the concert recording from which this clip was taken, on DVD. We've watched the second half of the film Once Were Brothers twice on TV. Each time we tuned in late and missed the start. Just another excuse to watch it again, this time from the beginning. "Somewhere Down the Crazy River" is a Robbie Robertson song I love, but it has already been our song of the day. It reminds me of late nights at the cottage, playing board games with my family, and it comes on the radio and it tells you you're ready for sleep. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Turkey in the Straw (Georgia Wettlin-Larsen)

Image
In an ongoing effort to escape the soul-sucking horribleness of my current circumstance, I've been re-watching Northern Exposure. This track was featured on an episode I just watched, and it brought me back to childhood. We used to do "folk dancing" in school (it was NOT optional) and Turkey in the Straw was one of the songs we danced to.  How did we dance to it? I have no idea. That memory cartridge is blank. But I still have great affection for this song. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay qaumajuapik (Riit)

Riit was featured in the track we listened to yesterday, so we've got her again today. I love her music. I love this sound, with its mix of traditional throat singing and contemporary electronica. It works so well.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Back Again (Julian Taylor)

Image
What a great track! This week we're listening to music from Juno nominees in the Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year category. It's great to see Black Indigenous representation.  The neighbourhood I grew up in has a large Black Indigenous population. Two years ago I met a group of young people from the neighbourhood who were taking part in a program (taught by a fellow Black Indigenous instructor) where they were not only building on their knowledge of traditional skills in areas like beading, but also learning different ways to make a living in the arts sector.  Their instructor is an amazing woman. She taught me a bit of beading too, but I forget everything I learned because my brain doesn't hold stuff.  I do remember the instructor, though!  She was one of those unforgettable people where you get the sense they must be older than they look, but they have this energy about them that's vibrant and youthful.  Anyway, I'm rambling. Enjoy today's song! If...

#SongoftheDay You Can Let Go (Crystal Shawanda)

Image
This week we're listening to Juno nominees in the Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year category. Crystal Shawanda takes her turn today. Maybe I should have saved this track for Father's Day. Whenever that is. I don't have a father. This song still made me cry, though! #SongoftheDay Hard Ground (Leela Gilday)

Image
I want to focus attention on all the nominees from the Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year category in the recently-awarded 2021 Juno Awards. The Junos are Canadian music awards, in case you're reading from somewhere other than Canada. Let's start with the winner, shall we?  It's Leela Gilday, who shares a first name with one of my favourite Futurama characters.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay All My Relations (JB The First Lady)

Image
I can't remember if I ever told you about being with my grandmother when she died. I'm thinking about it because I just finished watching a documentary about people's experiences as they approach death. When my grandmother was taken off food and water, it wasn't long before she stopped speaking.  Sometimes she opened her eyes, but even then she didn't seem particularly aware of what was going on around her, or who was in the room.  I spent days by her side, reading or knitting or talking with my aunts. One day, the woman who shared my grandmother's hospital room told us that, even though my grandmother no longer spoke during the daytime, at night (when this lady was trying to sleep), my grandmother spoke nonstop.  She repeated the same six names again and again: that of her father, her mother, her sister, her brothers, and her own name as well.  Apparently a lot of people have dreams or visions of deceased relatives before they pass, and these experiences most o...

#SongoftheDay Supernatural (Ruby Waters)

Ruby Waters is a Métis musician and I just love timbre of her voice, don't you? Every time I hear this song on the radio, my ears perk up. Because I like ghosts and the song is called Supernatural. Listen to this song!  It's so good!  It's from Nunavut electropop artist Riit, whose music crossed my twitter timeline the other day.  I knew twitter was still good for something... #SongoftheDay Silver River (Shingoose)

Today we pay tribute to Curtis (Shingoose) Jonnie, an Ojibway folk musician from Roseau River Anishinaabe First Nation, who died recently of Covid-19. #SongoftheDay Heto Na (Pantayo)

Image
I think I've been promising to share this particular track for... oh... the past year? But there are just so many incredible songs on Pantayo's self-titled release that I guess I took my time in getting to this one. (Kaingin gets stuck in my head all the time, and I'm never mad about that.)  If you don't yet have your copy of Pantayo, now is a great time to buy it:  https://pantayo.bandcamp.com/album/pantayo If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Always Have What We Had (William Prince)

Image
I could live inside William Prince's voice, couldn't you? New Year's Eve, my partner wanted to stay up until midnight so we could go outside and look at the CN Tower, which was supposed to be doing something interesting--a light show, I guess.  By 11p.m. I was face-down on the couch, barely floating about the level of consciousness. My partner put on the CBC's New Year's Eve countdown, and William Prince came on. His voice encouraged me to stay awake for the next hour (with the aid of tea and chocolate). At midnight, we left the house and looked around. People were setting off fireworks in every direction. A woman was on her cell phone, asking whoever she was talking to, "You're drunk and alone?!?" Probably there were a lot of drunk and alone people in the world, this New Year's Eve. I would have been content going to bed at ten, but I am middle aged. ymmv If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, t...

#SongoftheDay Sivunittinni (Ligeti Quartet ft. Tanya Tagaq)

Image
This piece was commissioned by the Kronos Quartet as a part of their Fifty for the Future project. The score and parts are available for free online at  https://50ftf.kronosquartet.org/composers/tanya-tagaq and, even if you're not planning on picking up an instrument right now, I would encourage you to have a look at the performance note.  Now, I haven't looked at sheet music in... ohhh... 25 years? But when I was taking music theory, I never saw anything like "lopsided triangle with a squiggle." Tagaq's music is always so exciting because she creates these sounds that are new, but that aren't. You recognize them from nature, from your body.  In this quartet, Tanya Tagaq instructs string instruments to create noises I've never heard from strings (maybe I don't get out enough) and I find this sound so earthy and grounded that I don't want it to end. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the eas...

#SongoftheDay Ur the Only One (Shawnee)

Image
The musical artist Shawnee was featured in a crossword puzzle my partner and I worked on the other week. This song of hers really speaks to me, and that's why we're listening to it today. Shawnee is two-spirit, and she talks about her identity in detail in this interview with Kids Help Phone. It's a good read. Take a look . #SongoftheDay V V V They Lie (Pantayo)

Image
You know I love Pantayo. I tell you all the time. Well, they've made this socially-distanced music video for V V V (They Lie), which happens to be one of my favourite songs from their spectacular self-titled album , which you should absolutely buy if you haven't already. #SongoftheDay Tiny Bubbles (Don Ho)

Image
I was just telling my sister this tale, so I guess I'll tell you too. It's yet another story about feeling old. A couple months ago, I played this song for a twenty-something friend of mine. She could not stop laughing. I don't think she heard half the song because she was laughing so hard.  She'd never heard Tiny Bubbles before. She'd never even heard OF it. I said to her: Remember on The Simpsons, when Homer sings "Writhing Funzos/ In my sack/ Makes me happy/ Makes me hurt my back"? That's based on this! She gave me this blank stare and it took a moment for me to realize this cultural reference that was so salient to my generation meant absolutely nothing to her. She had no idea what I was talking about. Not only had she never heard of this song from the 60s--she wasn't familiar with my cool contemporary 90s reference either! So there you have it. Just one more story about feeling old. But this one made my sister feel old, too, so it...
