#SongoftheDay Show Me the Way to Go Home (The Andrews Sisters)

Image
Okay, so I finally went to the emergency room. My partner took me there. We arrived at 9 at night. We left at 3 in the morning. It was exhausting and at the end of it, all I know is that I'm not likely to die right this second. There actually weren't too many patients waiting to be seen, and because it was the middle of the night there were a fair number of young children and babies. I have warm feelings toward parents who can't wait until the doctor's office opens to find out if their child's fever is life-threatening. We shared a waiting room with a mom and her toddler, who looked to be about my granddaughter's age (did I mention that I have a granddaughter now?) and who was very nearly as cute as my granddaughter--which is really saying something, because my granddaughter is officially the most adorable kid on the planet. Around two in the morning, the child in the ER waiting room said to his mother, "Wan go home." I was thinking, "I...

#SongoftheDay Are you Happy In Your Work? (Mary Beth Hughes)

Image
I've mentioned before that " I Accuse My Parents " is one of my favourite movies riffed on Mystery Science Theater 3000 . Ever since I cancelled my cable, I've been watching it a lot.  That means I've heard this song A LOT a lot, since it gets lip-synched in a host segment.   I always suspected there was more to the number than was aired in the MST3k episode, and here's proof! This is the extended version. Enjoy! On a personal note, I hope you're happy... in your work... and you're in love! If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely! I'm also an  Amazon Influencer,  so hopefully I can make a li...

#SongoftheDay I Don't Want to Set the World On Fire (The Ink Spots)

Image
Every time I tell this story, I expect people to laugh. In my mind, it's a funny story. Everybody else reacts like I must be traumatized by the event. But I'm not! Much worse things than this have happened in my life.  So! It was sometime in the 90s--1993, let's say--and I was making dinner for my family. I had a pot of water boiling on the stove, but I hadn't grabbed the pasta out of the cupboard yet. Spaghetti was kept in that really high cupboard over the stove, and I've always been super short, so I had to stand on my tippy-toes to reach. Remember, this was the 90s: a time when many of us wore oversized T-shirts tucked into our loose-fitting black jeans and then pulled out a touch so they were baggy at the front. When I reached up to grab the pasta, my T-shirt landed on the burner. Suddenly, I was on fire. This is the part of the story where people are like "Oh my God! You poor thing!" I guess it was memorable, since I remember it (unlike so many othe...

#SongoftheDay Chattanooga Choo Choo (The Nicholas Brothers and Dorothy Dandridge)

Image
Yes, we have more tap dancing today! And a tune I absolutely adore!  Last week, one of the crosswords my partner and I worked on had the clue: The Nicholas Brothers, _____ and Harold. It drove me crazy that I didn't know the answer.  I'd posted a number on this blog featuring Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers, but I didn't know their names. The answer is: Fayard. Not a name I'd ever have guessed. Enjoy this footage from 1941. Isn't Dorothy Dandrige a looker? I love the way her dress gleams when she moves. And that voice! *swoons* If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Jumpin' Jive (Cab Calloway)

Image
It's been a while since we've had a dance break, and it's been a while since we've seen Cab Calloway, so let's enjoy both today with this scene from the 1943 film Stormy Weather. The Nicholas Brothers are our tap stars (I love the part toward the end with the stairs and the slides). #SongoftheDay Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (Judy Garland)

Image
A doleful tune for those whose Christmas isn't everything they'd hoped for. I've celebrated Christmas pretty much the same way since childhood. This is the first year I'll be starting the day with my partner instead of my family. It's a big change for my mother, and a big consideration, seeing that my mom is gearing up for cancer treatment in the new year. Family expands when you form intimate and lasting bonds, and the best thing parents can do is to incorporated new people into the huddle rather than turning them away (which is, unfortunately, how my very insular family has always reacted to new people.) My partner is struggling particularly with Christmas, this year. Nostalgia is a tremendous force, and often a helpful indulgence, but trouble arises when you want to go back to times that can never be recaptured: when the kids were young, when parents were alive, when times weren't so tough. Those memories are lovely, when shared, but they can hinder enjoy...

#SongoftheDay It's Been A Long, Long Time (Kitty Kallen ft. Harry James and His Orchestra)

Image
Yes, we have vinyl. What a treat, right?  I haven't owned a record player in decades and there's so much I miss about the warmth and the crackle. It's Been A Long, Long Time is a song that gets sexier as the years go by, but there's something about this 1946 recording that makes one strikingly aware that a war has just ended. Don't you get the sense, in listening to it, that two lovers have been parted by circumstances outside of their control?  There's a sense of relief in their reunion. In later years, we get the sex and sultry passion with vocalists like Tina Louise and Peggy Lee . But, in 1946, this song is rather sweet. Well, that's my take. #SongoftheDay We'll Meet Again (Vera Lynn)

Image
I've been sitting here listening to this song over and over again for... I don't know how long. Today would have been my grandmother's birthday--it's the first to come around since her death last November.  She was my favourite person in the world and, though she lived a long life and was ready for death, I miss her every day. When she turned 80, we threw her a big party.  Every year thereafter, my whole family got together to celebrate every one of her birthdays. I come from a large family, and it was a big deal to get everyone in the same place at the same time. But we did it for my grandma, because she was the hub. We gathered around her. Without her, my family is fractured and lost. So today's song is for my grandmother, who fell for my grandpa during WWII--because he looked good in a uniform. One of the many comforts I get from music, when dealing with loss, is that when I get to the end of a song... I can play it again. If you're wondering how...
