Earlier this month I told you a story about rich people showing up empty-handed for a visit and then telling us they had just visited a nursery that had all these gorgeous poinsettias and bought one for their sister. But not for us.  So yesterday my partner and I went to that same nursery and we bought ourselves a damn poinsettia. Our house is sadly un-festive, except that it's full of Christmas cards. My partner sends out stacks of Christmas cards every year, and he gets stacks in return. I really admire that quality in him: maintaining social connections is important to him, so he takes action on all that stuff.  I wanted to sent one Christmas card to one person and I didn't even do that. I asked my partner which Christmas carol first comes to mind, for him, and he said it was this one. His reason for loving it? It's got the best descant. I had a wonderful time at my family's Christmas party yesterday. Most of my extended family was able to make it, and I got to see my cousins' little kids for the first time this year. Time went by in a snap. It was fun. There wasn't a quiet moment. Everyone was eager to catch up, but that side of the family is so big there are probably a dozen people I didn't get a chance to speak to at all. And I wish I had! One of my cousins is about to move to the same city where my stepkids went to university. I wanted to talk to him about that, but never got the opportunity. My cousins and I don't tend to communicate except in person, at these family gatherings--which are few and far between, now that my grandmother is no longer with us. I miss my grandma. My partner used to work for rich people, and he's weirdly in awe of them. He thinks it's amazing what they've gone on to accomplish in science and the arts and... well, all the fields, really. But all I can think is: of course they can accomplish anything they set their minds to. They have money. Family money. Mega family money. Wealth equals connections. They can fund their projects with Daddy's cash, or with the help of rich friends. The other day, I told you about a visit from my partner's friends. I considered them to be bad company for many reasons, including the fact that they showed up at our door with a bottle of wine, even though my partner had told them he was no longer drinking alcohol (in large part due to the cancer treatment he was undergoing at the time). This weekend, we had a visit from a different couple. These people were rich. Very rich. Complaining about the quality of the free wine served at their very exclusive COUNTRY CLUB's Christmas ...

My partner and I went to a Christmas event in the town where he lives, and there was a barbershop quartet singing this song. Neither of us had ever heard it, which came as a bit of a relief. It was the end of the evening and we'd heard the same carols done over and over by various choirs and brass bands.  So we were happy to hear something fresh.  Although, apparently this song was written in 1989, so... well, I guess that's fresh for a Christmas carol.  I never told you about Valentine's Day, did I?   My partner bought me chocolate truffles and a single red rose--very romantic.  Then he cooked steak for dinner and we had chocolate mousse cake for dessert. As soon as I was done eating, I had violent diarrhea. My intestines were noisy, gassy and unsettled for days afterwards.  I think it was the hot and sour soup I'd had for lunch, but who knows? My baby sister LOVED this song when she was a kid.  The funny thing is that I don't remember ever hearing it until she was growing up--and I was 16 or so by that time. Until today, I didn't realize this tune (is it funny or incredibly annoying?) dated back to the 1950s.   Reminds me of the Arthur cartoon my sister also liked, when she was young.  Arthur's little sister is obsessed with something annoying. Is it a doll that sings? Or a song about a bus?  It's December. Time for Christmas music? Have I written about not liking gifts?  Some people find this impossible to understand, but thanks to all the free therapy I've received in 2020, I finally understand it. The other thing I've learned about this year is love languages. To some people, giving and receiving gifts is how they say and hear "I love you." Gifts just happen not to be my love language. We'll be well into Hanukkah by the time you read this post, but I'm writing it on the first night. My partner was playing a CD of choral Christmas carols and I just put it on pause for a sec to ask if I could sing him this song. Like yesterday's Water of Tyne, it's one we used to sing in choir--the only Hanukkah song in a sea of Christmas carols. I'm still sick and congested, so my voice is "low and sexy" (according to my partner) and out of control (according to me), but I will never tire of singing this song. A doleful tune for those whose Christmas isn't everything they'd hoped for. I've celebrated Christmas pretty much the same way since childhood. This is the first year I'll be starting the day with my partner instead of my family. It's a big change for my mother, and a big consideration, seeing that my mom is gearing up for cancer treatment in the new year. Family expands when you form intimate and lasting bonds, and the best thing parents can do is to incorporated new people into the huddle rather than turning them away (which is, unfortunately, how my very insular family has always reacted to new people.) My partner is struggling particularly with Christmas, this year. Nostalgia is a tremendous force, and often a helpful indulgence, but trouble arises when you want to go back to times that can never be recaptured: when the kids were young, when parents were alive, when times weren't so tough. Those memories are lovely, when shared, but they can hinder enjoy...
