A Friendly Musical Visit Every Day

This song has been bopping around my head ever since I rewatched Strangers on a Train, which was actually even better than I remembered it. Nice when that happens. As for Guy Lombardo, his is a name I hear extremely frequently now that my partner has moved back to his hometown, which also happens to have been the hometown of the big band leader. He's got a bridge named after him. I had to do some digging to find out who the vocalist is. I believe we're listening to Kenny Gardner. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  See you soon! My partner took me to see Death of a Salesman at Stratford for my birthday. I think it was one of those gifts that was actually for him, since I don't need any additional encouragement to feel massively depressed, but we'll set that aside because he bought me a delicious pizza afterwards. Anyway. The production used this tune throughout the performance. It was played on a trumpet, which happens to be the instrument I learned when I took band class in middle school. Have I ever told you that? I don't think I have. I was really good at it, too. I've been feeling so sick the past few days that I've barely had the energy to watch TV--and that's saying something. Watching TV isn't exactly a gruelling task. But one of my meds has been making me sick to my stomach, and after days of this I am just so weak. It's times like this when I realize how much my partner does to take care of me and to take care of our surroundings when I'm unwell. I'm noticing how much he does because he's not here. He's at his house; I'm at my place. And my place is a mess because I don't have the energy to clean it properly. Now I'm realizing that usually, when I'm sick, he does the dishes, he dries them and puts them away so we don't have a kitchen full of dirty dishes. Normally when I'm sick to my stomach, he runs to the bathroom with me and holds my hair. If my hair is pulled back, he pets my head because he says he doesn't know what else to do. But clearly he does know what to do, beca...

I woke up with this song in my head, which bothered me deeply because I would say I do have strings and I am grateful for those strings. But I also woke up full of anxiety because my partner wants to move again, and moving is such a big thing. It's probably a smart decision. We never put down roots in the small town where he bought a house, and we kind of never wanted to. Moving here was a snap decision, and right away there were so many things where we were like... oh, this was a big mistake. Not that it's been all bad. But there are just so many reasons to leave, not the least of which is lack of access to sufficient healthcare. Also, it's expensive. Also, transit is extremely limited. Also, also, also... When I'm anxious, I am not at my best. But what I've realized this time around that I didn't realize the last time my partner wanted to move is that he is anxious too. None of this is easy or comfortable for him. We are experiencing a lot of the same emotio...

Not sure why this story just popped into my head, but a guy I once worked with told me about a temp they'd had at a different company he'd worked for. This was an older woman. She'd been hired to come in for a week to do some filing or whatever, and that was the gig. She was not a permanent employee.  But she kept coming back. Like the cat who came back... the very next day. And the day after that. And on and on. She wasn't coming into the office to work, though. This woman would come into this workplace, head straight to the kitchen, and make herself "a cuppa." That's what she called her tea. Then she'd settle in at a desk that didn't belong to anybody, and turn on the computer.  This was back in the early days of the internet, when a lot of people still didn't have web access from home. That was the case with this woman. So she'd go on the internet, and she'd pull up recipes (cake recipes, mainly) and print them off. All day. Every d...

Okay, so I finally went to the emergency room. My partner took me there. We arrived at 9 at night. We left at 3 in the morning. It was exhausting and at the end of it, all I know is that I'm not likely to die right this second. There actually weren't too many patients waiting to be seen, and because it was the middle of the night there were a fair number of young children and babies. I have warm feelings toward parents who can't wait until the doctor's office opens to find out if their child's fever is life-threatening. We shared a waiting room with a mom and her toddler, who looked to be about my granddaughter's age (did I mention that I have a granddaughter now?) and who was very nearly as cute as my granddaughter--which is really saying something, because my granddaughter is officially the most adorable kid on the planet. Around two in the morning, the child in the ER waiting room said to his mother, "Wan go home." I was thinking, "I...

I just threw out my 2007 calendar--the one that had all my appointments, deadlines and work shifts written in it.   My writing career began in 2006.   In 2007, according to this calendar, I worked two jobs (warehouse work on weekdays, retail on the weekends) plus any temp stuff and casual labour I could cram in on the side. And throughout all that, I was writing books, building my business, marketing, really going at it. Oh--and I did volunteer work at a women's shelter too. I have no idea where I found the hours. I worked seven days a week outside the house, plus writing?  When did I find the time?   Looking at that calendar was a real eye-opener. It made me even more grateful than usual for the life I have now.  My writing business supports me.  I don't need to take on outside work.  Thank goodness. Even though I had two consistent jobs in 2007, I found a bunch of job interviews pencilled in on my calendar because I was struggling to make ends meet. ...

I never actually knew when my parents got married until... today, actually. Turns out my parents' wedding anniversary is the same day as the anniversary of my partner's divorce. Isn't that weird?  That's got to mean something. I don't know what, but something. This song makes me think of that Treehouse of Horrors episode of The Simpsons where Homer is fixing the toaster and keeps going back in time, each time changing the present he returns to. When he arrives in a timeline where the family is rich and everything's perfect, he leaves because there aren't any donuts. Then Marge says, "Oh look, kids, it's raining" and, of course, it's raining donuts.  Until Covid came along, I never understood why some people celebrate the hell out of holidays. Of course, different people have different reasons for celebrating--religious observances obviously hold more weight if you're actually religious--but now that there's so little to do and look forward to (aside from the pleasures of work and waking up beside someone I adore), celebrating anything appeals to me greatly. I won't even tell you how much money I spent on chocolate. My partner tells me that, when he was growing up, Easter was a big deal. Everyone in his family got all new clothes for Easter.  Springtime. New beginnings.  I, too, received new clothes at Easter: my Welsh grandmother always bought my sister and I matching dresses and, yes, an Easter bonnet.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.  I've mentioned before that " I Accuse My Parents " is one of my favourite movies riffed on Mystery Science Theater 3000 . Ever since I cancelled my cable, I've been watching it a lot.  That means I've heard this song A LOT a lot, since it gets lip-synched in a host segment.   I always suspected there was more to the number than was aired in the MST3k episode, and here's proof! This is the extended version. Enjoy! On a personal note, I hope you're happy... in your work... and you're in love!  We were doing a crossword puzzle the other day and one of the clues asked for the girl's name on The Little Rascals.  Right away, I wrote in Darla.  My partner just kind of stared at me. I'm actually terrible with trivia and I have the world's worst memory, so it's rare for me to come up with answers so fast.  As we went along solving the puzzle, we had trouble with some the intersecting words. My partner was like, "Are we sure Darla is right?"  Yes. Yes, we are.  My baby sister was in love with the Little Rascals movie that was made in the 90s. She had it on VHS. I wouldn't have said I remembered anything about the movie, even though I've probably seen it dozens of times, but I guess I remember Darla's name.  Our trek through the late 90s wouldn't be complete without this track, also introduced to me by a gay couple I was friends with back then.  If you weren't around in those days, swing music and dance saw a resurgence in popularity. It was even in commercials for The Gap, which was the very height of cool, at the time. (I'm joking. Or maybe I'm not. I had a lot of friends who worked and/or shopped at The Gap. Were my friends cool? That's a question I am unwilling to answer.) Happy New Year! This song was introduced to me by the same couple I mentioned in yesterday's post. In fact, since I didn't listen to popular music in the late 90s (I listened to classical and show tunes), they introduced me to all the hits of the day. I'll play another one tomorrow.  I love bad girls. That's why I gravitate toward Mamie van Doren movies. She is so damn sexy, with a hard edge I can't resist.  This movie (Guns, Girls and Gangsters) is on TV right now. I keep wanting to call it Gold Guns Girls, but that's a Metric song.  It's December. Time for Christmas music? Have I written about not liking gifts?  Some people find this impossible to understand, but thanks to all the free therapy I've received in 2020, I finally understand it. The other thing I've learned about this year is love languages. To some people, giving and receiving gifts is how they say and hear "I love you." Gifts just happen not to be my love language. The only gift I like getting is chocolate.  Anything edible, really.  If you gave me cheese, I'd be really happy about that. If you're of my generation, you might know this tune as the theme song from Married With Children.  I'm sure I've mentioned in the past that I wasn't "allowed" to watch Married With Children. I remember it airing daily in syndication, maybe at 11 at night?  No, 11:30.  I know I shouldn't joke about having been neglected as a child, but you'll often catch me saying it was really easy to get away with watching shows I wasn't supposed to watch when there were no conscious/sober adults around. So I did watch Married With Children more often than I should have, even though I didn't like it. Sometimes kids just want to do what they're not supposed to do.  Anyway, it's taken me only a year of living with a man to begin my devolution into Peg Bundy. The transformation is nowhere near complete. I'll let you know how nasal-y I can whine and how big I can get my hair. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and vis...

I wish I'd put up more Halloweeny songs before Halloween, but you can't go back in time (well, maybe YOU can--I can't), so let's listen to Earth Kitt. It's been a while.  Yes, we have more tap dancing today! And a tune I absolutely adore!  Last week, one of the crosswords my partner and I worked on had the clue: The Nicholas Brothers, _____ and Harold. It drove me crazy that I didn't know the answer.  I'd posted a number on this blog featuring Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers, but I didn't know their names. The answer is: Fayard. Not a name I'd ever have guessed. Enjoy this footage from 1941. Isn't Dorothy Dandrige a looker? I love the way her dress gleams when she moves. And that voice! *swoons* If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.
