#SongoftheDay Sweat A La La La La Long (Inner Circle)

Image
I woke up in a pool of sweat at three in the morning. This is not unusual, but last night's sweat far exceeded the amount of sweat I've sweated on previous occasions. The sheets felt wet beneath me. I could not go back to sleep on them. Fortunately, there is a spare bedroom at my partner's house. Unfortunately, I feel guilty when I use it. I feel bad for leaving him alone in bed. But I really had no choice last night. The sheets were gross. I had to go. After I'd spent the rest of the night in the cool, crisp, DRY sheets of the spare room, I heard my partner starting his day. I got up and apologized for abandoning him. He had no idea what I was talking about. He didn't realize I'd left the bed. Okay, so maybe next time I soak the sheets with sweat, I won't worry so much about heading into the spare room. By the way, it's wild writing to you about perimenopausal night sweats while listening to a song that came out when I was in my early teens. I...

#SongoftheDay Spill the Wine (Eric Burdon & WAR)

Image
Last week, my partner was really down on himself because he broke a glass jar one day and then the next day he broke another glass jar.  It wasn't a big deal, but it was a big deal to him. Well, today I'm alone at my apartment.  Earlier in the day, I spilled a bucket of water on my carpet.  About three minutes later, I kicked over an entire cup of coffee on the same carpet.  People as clumsy as I am should not put drinks on the floor. I wish my partner had been here to see me make such a huge mess.  Hopefully it would make him feel okay-er about accidentally breaking things. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Conga (Gloria Estefan, Miami Sound Machine)

I've had this song in my head for weeks.  As soon as I pulled up the video, I remembered it from back in the day. This song was super-popular when I was coming up. I'm laughing because we listened to piano music yesterday, and this video starts with piano and the groan of "This is so boring!" heh. #SongoftheDay Rhythm of the Night (DeBarge)

This video came up when I was looking for Rhythm of Life yesterday. Now this is my generation! I listen to this song, which I probably haven't heard in 30+ years, and it's the 80s all over again. Can't talk. Lost in nostalgia. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Linstead Market (Miss Lou)

Today we have another Jamaican folk song we used to sing at school when I was a kid. I remember us all being like, "What's a quattie?" (I had to look it up again, because I couldn't remember--it's currency, basically a halfpenny, I think?) This song popped into my head the last time I was doing volunteer work. Can't believe that was... over a month ago? It was so much a part of my week, and I feel its absence like an ache. Anyway, I overheard a conversation between two people and they were talking about ackee. I'm trying to remember what exactly they were saying. Talking about different ackee dishes they'd tried, maybe? Aside from ackee and saltfish. Ackee pizza? No... Ackee what? This is going to drive me nuts. #SongoftheDay Sweets for My Sweet (The Drifters)

Image
My mother underwent surgery last week as a fairly drastic form of cancer treatment. It didn't go as well as planned, which is going to mean a longer than anticipated recovery time. Running a business is no picnic when you've only got yourself to rely on and you're spending every waking hour taking care of a sick family member. That's why I wrote this post , which I have shared before and will probably share again. I hate asking for help , but I could really use it at the moment. The day of my mom's surgery, I walked past a young man who worked at the hospital and he was singing this song. Haven't thought of it in years. #SongoftheDay Limbo Rock (Chubby Checker)

I woke up with this song in my head this morning. It reminds me of a birthday party I shared with one of my sisters, as a kid. I have a number of siblings, but this sister and I have birthdays that are practically on top of each other. Thus, we shared almost all of our birthday parties. It just so happened that all her friends were the sisters of all my friends, so it actually made a lot of sense to combine our parties. Anyway, one year we had a party in our unfinished basement. All I remember about it is that we limboed on bare concrete. Good times! Oh, and this song was playing all the while. If you watch this video closely, you'll notice footage from our party spliced in. (Kidding! We were never as cool as those hep cats. heh) If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay If You Wanna Be Happy (Jimmy Soul)

Image
Last week, my partner cooked me a lovely meal and then, after we'd finished washing the dishes, he swept me into his arms and danced me around the kitchen. It was a moment I'll never forget, because that's how I've always imagined happy couples behaving behind closed doors: dancing together in their kitchens. Romantic domesticity. Being sweet with each other.  Savouring that person's company. As we danced in the kitchen, I though to myself: if I could show Little Kid Me any moment from the life of Grown-Up Me, it would be this one. I'd want that kid to realize respectful, collaborative romantic love does exist, and that we're worthy of it. The love I grew up witnessing between my parents? It was moments like my father singing this song at my mother, and my mother covering her mouth with her hand, feeling ashamed about her crooked teeth. We all deserve love.  We all deserve respectful partners.  We're all worthy of that much. If you're wo...
