#SongoftheDay Stereophonic Sound from Silk Stockings (Janis Paige, Fred Astaire)

Image
This song popped into my head just now. Not sure why. Not even sure why I remember it so well. Before today, I'd only ever heard it once, when I watched the movie Silk Stockings on TV as a teenager. It felt like a classic, to me, but I'm not actually sure if too many people have seen it. And, in fact, this song is the only thing I remember about the movie. You'll have to turn your volume up-up-up to hear this one. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Stranger in Paradise (Johnny Mathis)

When I was a kid, I thought I wrote this song. Turns out I did not. But neither did the composers of the musical Kismet, from which this song comes. The tune was written by Alexander Borodin. We'll listen to that tomorrow. #SongoftheDay Pure Imagination (Jimmie Herrod)

Image
My partner and I were walking around a small-town fair the other day and a brass band was playing this song. It didn't occur to me right away that this was the song they were playing, at first. I remember just thinking to myself, "Oh, I know this tune. I think it's from a musical or something..." It wasn't until I realized that the fair had a Willy Wonka theme that everything clicked. #SongoftheDay A Bushel and a Peck (Sharon, Lois and Bram)

Image
Apparently this song is from Guys and Dolls. I've seen Guys and Dolls a number of times on stage, but I don't remember this song being in it. I do remember hearing Sharon, Lois and Bram sing it on their TV show when I was a kid. This is exactly the kind of song I want to share with my granddaughter. I can't remember if I told you that we've spontaneously burst into song a few times--my partner, my stepdaughter and I--to entertain our granddaughter. Technology is amazing. We can sing together even though we're on opposite sides of the planet. We'll have to sing this one. The trick is finding songs we know, all three of us, but it turns out there are many such songs. We even tried Row, Row, Row Your Boat in a round. My partner loves a round. Reminds him of camp. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library....

#SongoftheDay Don't Rain On My Parade (Shirley Bassey)

Image
Last week I was telling my newsletter subscribers about a mix tape my best friend made me in high school. This song was on it. It was Barbra for sure, but when I searched for it on YouTube, none of the versions that came up was an exact match to the one that was on my mix tape. I always wondered why my friend included this track among the Tori Amos and Ani DiFranco songs. I suspected it represented her impression of me: that I was always very interested in getting my own way, and I didn't like to be contradicted, especially when she tried to bring me down to earth. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Last Midnight from Into the Woods (Patina Miller)

Image
The other night I was singing my partner songs from Into the Woods when I stopped to ask, "Wait, are you the one who doesn't like Sondheim?" Then I laughed at myself, because... "the one?" The one what? Like, the sole person on this planet who doesn't like Sondheim? I don't even know what I was asking, there.  Anyway, he gave me a very non-committal non-answer that he prefers Les Miz. Cool, cool. But Into the Woods is my favourite musical. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a single song you can pluck from it and just listen to the way you can listen to an aria or showstopper out of context.  Equally unfortunately, I don't like the film that was made of this musical a few years back. Despite the all-star cast, I remember disliking it in a big way. My partner has never seen Into the Woods and it would be nice to have a good version on tap to show him. The first production of Into the Woods I ever saw was a community theatre version that fea...

#SongoftheDay I Am the Starlight / Light at the End of the Tunnel (Greg Mowry, Steve Fowler, and Broadway Cast of Starlight Express)

Image
Once upon a time, I had a crush on a man who took his family to England every year to see London's West End production of Starlight Express. I've never seen this musical, myself, but in the 80s I did check the LP out of the library and I taped the cast recording onto an audiocassette so I could listen to it after I'd returned the record. I listened to it a lot, and I liked it even though it's strange. Or maybe because it's strange. Or maybe because I love trains. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay I Don't Care Much (Avery Jean Brennan)

Image
It's funny--I've had this song in my head on and off for... months. Before we went on hiatus, I'd been featuring trans opera singers here on the music blog. Well, Avery Jean Brennan came to my attention through a piece of mail I received from the Canadian Opera Company. I love this video they created--especially the post-it notes. Does that ever hit home. #SongoftheDay That Song In Every Musical That No One Likes (Sarah Smallwood Parsons)

Image
I found a pair of theatre tickets when I was shuffling through a drawer today. We go at the end of the month, if nothing medical comes up.  My partner and I had forgotten about these tickets. His siblings bought them for him as a birthday gift. Feels like centuries ago. We were supposed to see this play in May. As it happens, an exploratory surgical biopsy was booked for precisely that day. Back when his siblings bought those tickets, we didn't even know he had cancer. Luckily, the theatre company had no trouble rebooking our tickets for a date months in the future. We thought we'd have breezed through treatments by now. And, while we are done with radiation for the moment, I wouldn't say the process was a breeze. My partner is in the recovery phase now. He needs to do a lot of healing before his oncologist can even check to see if his treatments were successful. So, while it's entirely possible (even probable) that we'll be able to use those theatre tickets ...

#SongoftheDay Singin' in the Rain (Gene Kelly)

Image
When you get to a certain point of illness, there's nothing else you can focus on. That's where I'm at today. I can barely string these sentences together. It's taking all my energy to type these words, and I'm typo-ing a lot. My health is atrocious. I'm in terrible pain. I'm still taking care of my partner. I still haven't gone to the ER. I'm scared to go. I don't want to leave my partner alone. I'm afraid, I'm afraid, I'm afraid. I don't know why I chose Singin' in the Rain as our song of the day. I do feel rained on, but I'm definitely not happy about it. I did enjoy watching the dancing in this video, though. It gave me four minutes of distraction. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help ...

#SongoftheDay I Sing the Body Electric (62nd Annual Grammy Awards Finale)

Image
I actually can't stand this song, even though I loved Fame (the movie AND the TV show) back in the 80s. I attended a very Fame-like high school as a teenager, and we sang this as a choral number one year. I love singing, and I usually enjoyed any song we sang just because of the community feeling you get when you're singing with a hundred other people, but this number didn't do it for me. I still hate it. But I chose it as our song of the day because last week I published the 21st installment in my "Sexy Surprises" series of 6-story erotic anthologies. This book is called " Good Vibes, Sexy Surprises " and all the stories feature vibrators. And that made me think of this song. So there's your connection. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Pa...

#SongoftheDay "Somewhere" from West Side Story (Breanna Sinclairé with The Colorado Symphony)

I'm researching trans opera singers this week, and I came across Breanna Sinclairé in my studies. There's an extensive introduction in the video, so I'll let you listen. #SongoftheDay If Ever I Would Leave You (Robert Goulet)

Image
I just watched an episode of Murder She Wrote that had Robert Goulet in it. Not for long, though. I won't spoiler the episode for you, even if it is from the 80s (and I'm pretty sure it is), by stating or not stating that his character is or is not a murder victim. You'll just have to track it down and watch it for yourself.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Bewitched, Bothered, And Bewildered (Ella Fitzgerald)

Image
I don't think I've ever listened to this song in its entirety before today. The world "oversexed" certainly jumps out! I wasn't around in the 50s. Maybe it was a kinkier time than I'd imagined. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay As Long As He Needs Me (Shirley Bassey)

Image
This song popped snarkily into my head in a moment of (loving) irritation.  I dared my partner to write a short story as an anthology submission, and he actually did. And it's a great story!  He did a wonderful job.  I really didn't think he had it in him, but I'm extraordinarily proud. The only thing is, his story is too long. It needs to be edited down.  I'm at my apartment. He's at his. So he keeps emailing me his edits and asking for the word count, because he doesn't have a proper word processor on his computer.  He asked me which word processor I'm using and I told him. It was free on the App Store, easy to download, recommended. Now he keeps sending me emails like "It's asking for my credit card info..."  What?  Are you in the App Store?  "No, I just googled it and I'm on this website..." No!  No!  Don't give your credit card info to sketchy websites!   It's so much easier when we're in the same room and I can ...

#SongoftheDay I Don't Know How To Love Him (Yvonne Elliman)

Image
The other day I made a Youtube video of me playing Solitaire, and the whole time I had this song stuck in my head. I've never seen Jesus Christ Superstar, and yet I'm singing along with this song right now, and I seem to know every single lyric, so... I don't know. I guess it was popular or something.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay You're A Queer One, Julie Jordan (Barbara Ruick and Shirley Jones)

Image
Until today, I never knew whether this was a real song or if it was a song I made up as a kid. The way it goes in my head is a little different from this, but not much, and I thought it was "Jilly," but apparently it's Julie. I've never seen Carousel or even listened to the soundtrack, so I'm not sure where my exposure to this song would have come from.  Just one of life's little mysteries. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Easter Parade (Judy Garland and Fred Astaire)

Image
Until Covid came along, I never understood why some people celebrate the hell out of holidays. Of course, different people have different reasons for celebrating--religious observances obviously hold more weight if you're actually religious--but now that there's so little to do and look forward to (aside from the pleasures of work and waking up beside someone I adore), celebrating anything appeals to me greatly. I won't even tell you how much money I spent on chocolate. My partner tells me that, when he was growing up, Easter was a big deal. Everyone in his family got all new clothes for Easter.  Springtime. New beginnings.  I, too, received new clothes at Easter: my Welsh grandmother always bought my sister and I matching dresses and, yes, an Easter bonnet.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Mr Cellophane (Ben Vereen)

Image
My partner was talking about someone he knows whose name sounds like Ben Vereen, and it made me think of that line from Pinky and the Brain: "Charlie Sheen, Ben Vereen, shrink to the size of a lima bean."  Remember that? No?  Just me? Anyway, I admitted to my partner that I didn't actually know who Ben Vereen was, so he told me, and then he suggested we watch him dance. I chose to feature this number from Chicago (performed with the Muppets) because I've always loved this song. My partner had bought me tickets to see Chicago last year, but then Covid happened and the theatres closed down and the production never happened. The last time I saw Chicago, it was Saul Rubinek (who played Donny on Frasier!) singing this song. I don't think he did any dancing, though... If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Wind Beneath My Wings (Bette Midler)

Image
I found myself singing this song while doing my online banking, and I don't know why. Was I singing to my money? Is it the my hero and everything I would like to be? The wing beneath my wings is probably all the people who read my books and support my livelihood.  Have I mentioned lately that I'm a writer? Did you know this about me?  My name is Giselle Renarde and I write books. Adult fiction, queer fiction, a pretty wide range of novels and novellas and short stories and anthologies--ebooks, paperbacks and audiobooks.  You can buy them pretty much anywhere books are sold, and I appreciate every single sale. Book sales are how I earn my living.  It's how I pay my rent and put food on the table, so I genuinely couldn't live without the reading public. If you're a reader of my books, thank you. And if you're reading these words I'm writing right now, thank you also. btw, I remember that record jacket. We had this album--I think a lot of people did. If you...
