#SongoftheDay Days of Pearly Spencer (David McWilliams)

Image
Speaking of mishearing song lyrics, this track was playing on an episode of Heartbeat. I knew it vaguely, but I didn't know what it was called or who it was by. All I could really make out was "the days of curly center." Except those aren't actually the words, as I now realize. The strings are super-evocative, huh? #SongoftheDay You've Made Me So Very Happy (Blood, Sweat and Tears)

Image
I can't remember if I've told you this story before, but talking about the movie Better Than Chocolate the other week brought it to mind: Many years ago, a TV network here in Canada would air Canadian short films late at night. It was a half-hour program, but the shorts would generally be under five minutes long.  The only one I remember was a comedic short about a butch lesbian who couldn't stop sweating, especially when she laid eyes on her crush. I specifically remember the character shoving maxi pads under her arms to keep the sweat in check. I have tried and tried to track down this short film, but with no luck. I'm guessing it was the 90s when I saw it, which would mean I saw this short before I saw Better Than Chocolate. I loved this short a) because it was funny and b) because it was a film featuring a lesbian but it wasn't a film about being a lesbian. It was a film about sweating buckets. (Particularly relatable now that I'm perimenopausal, but tha...

#SongoftheDay Old Man (Neil Young)

#SongoftheDay Jennifer Juniper (Donovan)

Image
A couple years ago, I wrote a book called NOELLE'S DIARY that's got a character named Juniper in it. Her name didn't start out as Juniper. First it was Christine, but that looked too similar to Christmas--which is relevant, because this is a Christmas book . So then I changed it to Jacqueline, but I found out very quickly that Jacqueline is a hard name to type. So then it was Jacie. Is that a name? I don't know, but it was easier to type. Finally, I was searching for names that related to Christmas. Juniper was among them. Perfect. Another J name, and there's a Christmas connection. Juniper it is. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon & Garfunkel)

Image
My partner has Covid. He didn't notice, at first, because two of the major symptoms (fatigue and sore throat) are things he's been experiencing since he began radiation this summer. When the cough and chills developed, that's when he knew something was different. He was visiting his sister when all this went down, but he's gone home (to his home, where I am not) since. Now his sister has Covid, too. He feels awful that she got sick from him. I feel awful that he's alone and I'm not taking care of him. He keeps telling me I've got enough on my plate with debilitating chronic illness, and I don't need Covid on top of all that. True enough.  I still feel bad that he's alone, though. We've barely spent any time apart since his cancer treatment began. We're listening to a song my partner loves today. Correction: you're listening to it. This song always makes me cry, and I do not feel like crying right now, so you're on your own.  If y...

#SongoftheDay A Horse with No Name (Michelle Branch)

Image
Sometimes I take walks alone in the evening. I like to walk after dark. Well, lucky for me, it's already dark by 7 p.m. these days, so I can listen to the 70s at 7 on my phone--that's a radio program where they play music from the 70s at 7 o'clock. Just thought I'd clarify. They play this song often, and I'm never mad to hear it. I've always loved this song, which I probably told you the first time it was our song of the day. This cover from BoJack Horseman is both evocative and lovely. I always tell my partner BoJack Horseman was the best show I'd never want him to watch, because he would get way too deep into the itchy existential angst it creates. I don't think I ever watched the final season, but I remember that as it came out season by season, I would always rewatch every episode that had been aired up to that point in preparation of the next chapter in these characters' journeys.  It was depressing as hell, but so was my life. If you'r...

#SongoftheDay Life is a Carnival (The Band)

Image
My partner is playing records in the basement, and this song just came on. We were talking about it weeks ago, when I was telling him about my friend in high school making a music video for "Would You Like to Buy an O?" from Sesame Street. He was saying it reminded of this song, with its lyric of "Would you like to buy a watch real cheap?" At the time, I thought I'd never heard the song he was talking about. Now I realize I had always heard those lyrics as, "Would you like to buy a washing machine?" If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay The Foggy Dew (Reyben Kim Woodwinds)

Image
We're back in the city for more medical appointments. As I write this post, I'm sitting in the living room of my apartment. I can hear all sorts of noise from outside. People are cheering on softball players across the street. Other people are drunkenly scream-laughing. And then there's the tin flute. I don't know for sure that it's a tin flute. That's just a guess. I'm no expert, but it seems to be playing Irish music? I figured the Celtic flute music was coming from outdoors, so I went into the bedroom, where my partner's got the window open. In the bedroom, I couldn't hear the flute music at all. I came back into the living room. There it was again. My partner doesn't believe me that there's Celtic flute music happening in here, and he's not willing to come and check. His loss, because it sounds pretty amazing. This video features an ocarina, not a tin flute, but you get the drift. If you're wondering how you can sup...

#SongoftheDay Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard (Paul Simon)

Image
It feels like ages ago, though it's only been a matter of months: my partner drove to his hometown to attend a high school reunion. I was at my apartment, and I was sitting on my bed with the window open, just like I'm doing right now. I could hear music wafting in from outside, and I went to the window to investigate. Turns out there was a mommy-and-me concert going on in the park across the street. The one-man-band (okay, just a guy with a guitar) sang a few kiddie songs like "The Wheels on the Bus," and then he sang Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard. Seemed like a funny choice for a kids' concert, but my partner is a huge fan of Paul Simon, so I texted him about the guitar guy playing this song. He texted me back to inform me that he'd just walked into his former high school's auditorium and there was a husband-and-wife musical duo performing for the reunion crowd.  They were currently singing "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard." I...

#SongoftheDay The Weight (The Band ft. The Staples Singers)

Image
Robbie Robertson died last week. You probably know that by now, but it hit my partner pretty hard. He loved The Band. He owns The Last Waltz, the concert recording from which this clip was taken, on DVD. We've watched the second half of the film Once Were Brothers twice on TV. Each time we tuned in late and missed the start. Just another excuse to watch it again, this time from the beginning. "Somewhere Down the Crazy River" is a Robbie Robertson song I love, but it has already been our song of the day. It reminds me of late nights at the cottage, playing board games with my family, and it comes on the radio and it tells you you're ready for sleep. #SongoftheDay Turkey in the Straw (Georgia Wettlin-Larsen)

Image
In an ongoing effort to escape the soul-sucking horribleness of my current circumstance, I've been re-watching Northern Exposure. This track was featured on an episode I just watched, and it brought me back to childhood. We used to do "folk dancing" in school (it was NOT optional) and Turkey in the Straw was one of the songs we danced to.  How did we dance to it? I have no idea. That memory cartridge is blank. But I still have great affection for this song. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Joy to the World (Three Dog Night)

Image
I want to tell you about a wild experience I had inside my own mind. If you remember Laurie Brown from CBC's The Signal, you might be aware that she has a podcast called Pondercast. I only just found out that she's been creating these incredible guided meditations. These things are seriously next-level. They really do it for me. Today I listened to an episode that was called Waiting, I think. Sorry to be so vague--I'm just trying to get this out fast so I don't lose it. In this episode, she mentions a quote about catching sight of yourself in a shop window and realizing that you have the option to either see your own reflection or see what's beyond. At the end of the meditation, I had this visual experience (in my mind) of trying to see what was on the other side of the glass. I could only seem to see myself, but I wanted to know what was going on inside. When I was finally able to see through that window, what I saw inside was really adorable. There were all ...

#SongoftheDay Our House (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young)

Image
When I nap, I go full out. I can't nap for five or ten minutes. It's three hours or nothing. I need to get my full REM cycle in. I just woke up from a long-ass nap where I had a disheartening dream. I dreamed my partner and I bought a house on a beach. It was actually just a garage or a shack, and it was so small we had to sleep on a bed outside in the sand, but we were really happy about our purchase and our simple, small home looking out across the water. Then in my dream, my mother came to visit. She started pointing out all the bad things about our little house and telling me it was too small for the two children my partner and I suddenly had. Plus my mother pointed out that I was pregnant with another. The house just wouldn't do. No sense analyzing my own dream in public, but I can tell you this much: it felt a lot like real life. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell ...

#SongoftheDay California Dreamin (The Mamas and The Papas)

Image
This week it's Songs of Fall, brought to you by K-Tel, etc. etc. Althought I guess this is actually a winter song. Always strikes me as autumnal, for whatever reason. My partner and I learned how to solve cryptic crosswords during the pandemic, and it's one of my favourite things we do together.  I think I enjoy it so much because it's very challenging, there are still puzzles we can't finish or get less than 50% on (my partner always calculates how well we did), but there are also puzzles we get 100% on. Every time I come up with an answer (or we come up with one together, which is often how it works), I feel very accomplished. I don't feel that way too often, so it's a treat. The reason I'm telling you about crypic crosswords today is that we worked on one last month that had Mama Cass as a solution. It was the first one we got on the puzzle. My partner put the paper down on the table, I saw something about a 60s quartet, and I think there was a word i...

#SongoftheDay Mon Pays (Art of Time Ensemble, Mathieu Bellemare)

I promised you yesterday that I would bring you this song today, but rather than listening to the original Gilles Vigneault version, we've got a lovely arrangement by Robert Carli with Mathieu Bellemare on vocals.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay The Maid on the Shore (Stan Rogers)

Image
I've mentioned before that I'm kind of obsessed with a show called Mayday. It's about plane crashes, in case you've never seen it. The episode I just watched told the story of the plane crash that killed this Canadian folk musician, Stan Rogers. I didn't recognize the name, so I looked him up on Youtube. As soon as I heard his voice I was like ohhhhhh okay I do know him after all. What a sad loss to music.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Sick of Spiraling (Bachelor)

Image
The other day my partner had a phone call scheduled that I figured he would need privacy for. Usually I go for a walk when he has a call like this. This time he was like, "You don't have to go out, you know.  You can stay home if you'd rather." I had work to do and, anyway, I had nowhere to go, so I stayed home.  I brought my computer into the bedroom and closed the door. After working for a while, I got sleepy and watched Unsolved Mysteries on Youtube.  It was lunchtime and I was hungry, but I didn't want to leave the bedroom in case I disturbed my partner. A little while later, I realized I was cold and I should turn off the fan and put on socks, but I wouldn't allow myself to do that in case the bed squeaked. I noticed that my body was feeling very tense.  Extremely tense.  I felt afraid, but I didn't know why. Later on, once I'd warmed up and eaten something, I realized I'd been having flashbacks to the many times I spent hiding in closets, as ...

#SongoftheDay Dead Skunk (Loudon Wainwright III)

Image
I was making myself some garlic bread the other day when I had a sudden craving to watch the MST3k riff of that cult classic, Zombie Nightmare . When I turned on the MST3k Twitch channel, would you believe Zombie Nightmare was just starting?   Am I psychic or is that just good timing? We're listening to this song because at the point in the movie where Jon Mikl Thor's character gets hit by a car, Crow sings "There's a dead HUNK in the middle of the road." Gets me every time.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Too Good (Arlo Parks)

Image
The other day we were doing a crossword puzzle and Arlo Parks was the answer. I was like... crosswords know Arlo Parks? Wow. When I hopped on over to Youtube to grab a video, this one was magically suggested to me. Google is creepy that way: they know what you want before you do. Anyway, I feel this video and this song. It's a good one.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay The Sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel)

Image
I had an episode of The Simpsons on last week called Lady Bouvier's Lover, I think?  It's the one where Grandpa Simpson courts Marge's mother. I've referred to it often during Covid, because it's got that one scene where Grandpa goes into the retirement home to grab Mrs. Bouvier and he comes out with the wrong woman, and that old lady says, "Can I come too?"   You know what I'm talking about. Anyway, I quote that line a lot, these days. I've got nothing going on, so any time my partner is going anywhere, I'm right on that "Can I come too?" At the end of the episode, there's a spoof on this song called "The Sound of Grandpa," which is what I was going to play for you... but my partner loves Simon and Garfunkel, so I'm going for the original. In his honour. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell a...
