#SongoftheDay Daddy Cool (Boney M)

Image
YouTube now seems to be working overtime to prove to me that music videos existed in the 70s.  Okay, I admit it: I was wrong when I said music videos were invented in the 80s. Clearly they existed in the disco era. This Boney M video was made in 1976, from what I gather. I'll give them this: they found a location they liked and they stuck with it. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay Pata Pata (Miriam Makeba)

Image
I remember this song from my childhood, although I never knew what it was called or who it was by, back then.  Yesterday, I realized I haven't listened to new music in maybe three or four years. I haven't listened to contemporary pop music since the 90s, but at some point in the 2000s, I started listening to indie rock as it emerged.  I never intended to stop listening to new music. It definitely wasn't deliberate, on my part. Looking back, it seems like I stopped listening to new music around the time I turned 40. I guess that's when nostalgia became more attractive than novelty, and I switched over to listening to songs that gave me comfort. Like this one. And so many more. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. #SongoftheDay The Foggy Dew (Reyben Kim Woodwinds)

Image
We're back in the city for more medical appointments. As I write this post, I'm sitting in the living room of my apartment. I can hear all sorts of noise from outside. People are cheering on softball players across the street. Other people are drunkenly scream-laughing. And then there's the tin flute. I don't know for sure that it's a tin flute. That's just a guess. I'm no expert, but it seems to be playing Irish music? I figured the Celtic flute music was coming from outdoors, so I went into the bedroom, where my partner's got the window open. In the bedroom, I couldn't hear the flute music at all. I came back into the living room. There it was again. My partner doesn't believe me that there's Celtic flute music happening in here, and he's not willing to come and check. His loss, because it sounds pretty amazing. This video features an ocarina, not a tin flute, but you get the drift. If you're wondering how you can sup...

#SongoftheDay Luna Llena (Arca)

Image
There was a full moon recently--a blue moon, in fact--but I didn't see it. We were still in the city that night, but you can't see the moon from my apartment and we didn't have the energy to leave my building.  A stark contrast to the previous full moon, which we went out in search of.  We learned, at that time of night, that we had to walk down the street behind my building until we got to the first cross road.  From there, if we stood at the corner of the sidewalk, we could just see the moon over another apartment building. There was a satellite dish somewhat in the way, but we could see it. A stark contrast, also, to the night my partner woke me at 2:30 in the morning and brought me into the backyard to watch the shooting stars.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica...

#SongoftheDay It's Oh So Quiet (Björk)

Image
Yesterday my partner was talking to his sister-in-law, who is a retired nurse, and she kept asking him all these questions that implied we were living in normal times. It really drove the point home, for me, that people have no idea what life is like for us right now. Even someone who worked in healthcare didn't seem to understand that cancer has taken over our lives. Cancer is our whole life. In the past month, my partner (who has always been so active and athletic) has gone to medical appointments and slept. Aside from that, we have watched two movies on DVD. In an entire month. Yes, most days he is too tired to watch a movie, even though he spends most of his time on the very couch that is situated in front of the TV. That is the level of pain and exhaustion we've reached. This is not normal life. These are not normal times. I probably wouldn't understand, either, if I wasn't seeing it first-hand. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing y...

#SongoftheDay Smetana's Vltava (Vienna Philharmonic, Bobby McFerrin conductor)

Image
Better known (by me, at least) as The Moldau, this piece is one of my absolute favourites. Has been since I was a teen. Another thing that happened when I was a teen is: my wisdom teeth started growing in. And you know what? They're still at it. I never had them removed and now I'm too scared and also it costs money. The money piece is more of an excuse, at this stage. I haven't been to the dentist in 15 years. My last experience with a new dentist left me with permanent pain. So I haven't been back. Now I'm in my forties and I've still got these damn wisdom teeth to deal with. It's not every day. I could not cope with 20+ years of this pain, because it is honestly brutal. Every few years one of these teeth starts thrusting itself through my gums, wreaking havok in my head. I'm in a lot of pain right now is basically what I'm saying. I tried to distract myself yesterday by calling my sister, but as she was talking all that was going through my m...

#SongoftheDay Don't Stop Believin' (Journey)

Image
This song is in my head because I published a new book in my Lesbian Diaries series the other day, and the subtitle for this one ( Poppy's Diary ) is "Just A Small Town Girl."  A few years back, I watched a documentary about the new lead singer for Journey, but I don't remember anything about it. Nothing sticks, in my brain, except song lyrics and quips from 90s sitcoms. Every time I hear Journey, I think about an episode of Just Shoot Me where Maya's been through a break-up or something and all she wants to do is eat candy and listen to Journey. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. #SongoftheDay John Rutter's Sing A Song Of Sixpence (Gita Swara Nassa Youth Choir)

Image
For the past hour, I've been mired in nostalgia.  Lately, I've been thinking about the fairy tale books I had when I was a child. These books were mostly from the 70s, so I remember the colour schemes as being primarily orange and brown--the colours of the 70s. The thing is, I can't trust my memory. There's a book that exists in my head, but I can't seem to find any evidence of it in the real world. If it weren't for Covid, I would go to my mother's house and dig through her basement. She never throws things away, so if that book existed, she probably still has it. The song we're listening to is a gorgeous setting of a rhyme featured in one of the fairy tale books I had, as a kid.   The Real Mother Goose was originally published in 1916, and the witch on the cover scared me. I guess she was supposed to be Mother Goose, but I saw her as a witch. I also had Dean's Mother Goose Book of Rhymes , as well as Dean's A Book of Fairy Tales , which scare...

#SongoftheDay Heto Na (Pantayo)

Image
I think I've been promising to share this particular track for... oh... the past year? But there are just so many incredible songs on Pantayo's self-titled release that I guess I took my time in getting to this one. (Kaingin gets stuck in my head all the time, and I'm never mad about that.)  If you don't yet have your copy of Pantayo, now is a great time to buy it:  https://pantayo.bandcamp.com/album/pantayo If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay La fille du vent (Olivia Ruiz)

Image
There's an episode of Frasier where Roz has to do community service in a retirement residence. An elderly woman who lives there says something to the effect of: "Every day, I look in the mirror and you know what I say? Ahh!!!" That's what I did this morning. I looked in the mirror, spotted a few new grey hairs, and went, "Ahh!"   My partner was very concerned and asked what was wrong.  I told him it was nothing, just MORE grey hairs.  He said, "Sorry--that's my fault."  Last week, he pointed out that ever since we've been living together, my "eleven lines"--those two vertical frown lines between my eyebrows--have become permanent residents of my face. One of the lyrics toward the end of this song talks about her father telling her "que je suis son cheveux blancs"--that she is the cause of his grey hair. That's not at all how I feel about my partner, but the proof is in the pudding.  Or, rather, the proof is in my ha...

#SongoftheDay Toto's Africa (Ndlovu Youth Choir)

Image
Here's the choral rendition of Toto's Africa I mentioned yesterday. This performance is visually stunning, but as a warning: I don't think the lights are technically strobing, but they might have the same effect if you're sensitive to strobes. They're probably fine, but I'm just mentioning it out of an abundance of caution.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Orinoco Flow (Enya)

I mentioned yesterday that I'm grieving the loss of an Irish friend, so we're listening to more Irish music today. I always liked this song, and it strikes me as a good one for mourning. #SongoftheDay Danny Boy (John McDermott)

I just found out a family friend died. He was the Irishest Irish person I've ever met, so I'm listening to Danny Boy and sobbing like an infant. His death is hitting me HARD. #SongoftheDay Rasputin (Boney M.)

Image
I have a friend who HATES Boney M, and I would say this performance probably encapsulates why? Despite my friend's views, I must say I have great affection for this track. It's one of those songs that was hugely popular in Canada, but not in the states. So maybe you've heard it a million times, maybe not. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay The Unicorn (The Irish Rovers)

Image
Remember yesterday, how I mentioned I had the colours part of "Sing a Rainbow" stuck in my head, but I had no idea what the song was called until I looked it up? The exact same thing just happened to me with this song. My partner and I have been working on jigsaw puzzles together, and the one that's currently on the go has lions and elephants and flamingoes and all sorts of creatures on it (even a dik-dik, if I'm not mistaken).  Naturally, this song popped into my head.  Except the only part of the song I knew was the "green alligators and long necked geese, 'hoompty'-back camels and chimpanzees..." part.  Until I looked it up, I had no idea the song was about unicorns! Well, I probably knew. But I probably haven't heard that song in over thirty years, and my memory is not the best. Actually, this song is kinda sad. Reminds me of the movie The Last Unicorn. Remember that? I loved that movie, when I was a kid. Oh, and... what was that other movie ...

#SongoftheDay Oceania (Bjork)

Image
Yesterday we talked about Vivek Shraya's awesome book, The Subtweet , which you should definitely read. The characters in this novel spend considerable time listening to Bjork, talking about Bjork, and singing along with Bjork. So today we're listening to Bjork. Of course, the characters sing It's Oh So Quiet, which seems to be the go-to Bjork song always. It was mentioned in a crossword puzzle I was solving with my partner. It was mentioned in a 90s Trivia board game I played with my family. But you know what? That is my least favourite Bjork song. So we're listening to Oceania instead. #SongoftheDay V V V They Lie (Pantayo)

Image
You know I love Pantayo. I tell you all the time. Well, they've made this socially-distanced music video for V V V (They Lie), which happens to be one of my favourite songs from their spectacular self-titled album , which you should absolutely buy if you haven't already. #SongoftheDay Fool's Paradise (Cold Specks)

Image
I just did a quick search to see which Cold Specks songs I've posted in the past so I wouldn't repeat myself.  I honestly couldn't believe it when my search function found no result. I LOVE Cold Specks and I'm 100% sure I've written about her before, so I guess that was on a different blog and probably on Twitter, too, because I have tons to say about this artist. First off, she reminds me of my sister. (And when I say "she," I'm referring to Somali Canadian singer-songwriter Ladan Hussein, who has released most of her music as Cold Specks.) One of the first stories I heard about her is that she didn't tell her family when her first album was released. Her sister went to the movies one day and there was an ad for Cold Specks' debut record. Her sister saw her face on the big screen and was just like... wait WHAT? That story always makes me think of my own sister (well, one of my sisters), because if she released a record there's no way s...

#SongoftheDay Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody (Louis Prima)

Image
This is another song that came up in one of our crossword puzzles. I got it immediately, because I associate it with one of my high school friends. I went to school with a lot of dramatical types, and my first encounter with this particular chap was his performance of this number in a top hat and tails. He went on to become an actor and playwright of some renown, which is not surprising and also is quite surprising. Like I say, I went to school with a lot of people who had that certain something--star quality--and while some of them went on to become actual stars, many did not. So why do some folks make it while others peak in high school?  Hard for me to say. I consider myself the peaked-in-high-school type. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site.
