I've been thinking about childhood a lot lately. Last week, I found out one of my old school friends has a horrible form of cancer. She's going to receive treatment at the same cancer care facility where my partner was treated last summer. In fact, she's going to receive treatment in the same radiation department.

When I told my partner all this, he said that his own cancer was Mickey Mouse compared to hers.

I've got tears in my eyes just telling you this. I found it so generous of my partner to say this, because I was there with him, watching the pain he was in throughout, and the all-consuming fatigue. He forgets all this, now that it's in the past. I can't remember if I mentioned to you that he said, the other week, that he hadn't been in any pain during treatment. Well, I can tell you for certain that that isn't true. I sat with him, watching him cry because he was in so much pain. But he's probably put all that out of his mind for good reason.

Hello, my friends. This blog stopped rather abruptly, didn't it? I always thought I had signed off, but it turns out I didn't. I just left you hanging. For two years. That's shameful. One big lesson I learned from all these Dutch decluttering videos I've been watching on YouTube is not to keep stuff that makes me feel bad. That's why I've been getting rid of all (most) of my books from university. They were super-expensive and I didn't always manage to do all my readings because I was simultaneously working full-time to put myself through school. So every time I looked at all these books on my bookshelf, I felt guilty for spending so much money on books I never read, guilty for not getting all my readings done, irritated that I had to put myself through school in the first place, and ashamed for having been such a lousy student. My partner brought The Shape of Water home from the library the other day. Neither of us had seen it. He'd never even heard of it. I said, "Isn't that the movie about a woman having sex with some kind of sea creature?" His eyes sort of widened, like he didn't realize what he'd gotten us into. Anyway, we watched it and it was surprisingly lovely. All I'd heard about it was the sex with a sea creature bit, but gosh it had a lot (more) going for it. I never would have picked up that DVD, but I'm glad my partner did. The film really surprised me. It's dreamy and fairy-tale-ish but also suspenseful and gruesome (I had to close my eyes a lot toward the end). The other evening, I was folding clothes on my partner's bed. He walked into the bedroom with his arms full of laundry and playfully asked, "What are YOUR clothes doing on MY side of the bed?" We proceeded to fold laundry together. I watched him go at it and said, "Wow, you could work at The Gap!" He agreed. He is an excellent folder. I couldn't stop smiling. This song has been on the radio a lot lately, and every time I hear it, the same scene replays in my head: I'm at my partner's place and he's just come home from the library.  He takes off his coat and hat and gloves and boots and sits in a chair and puts his feet up.  I've been sitting on the floor, because it's warmest near the fireplace, but as soon as I see his feet, I need to touch them. So I do. I get close and I massage his feet--something I don't think I've ever done. He says, "I've always wanted a foot massage--a professional one, I mean, though the amateur version is very good." The book Memoirs of a Geisha pops into my head, and I tell him so. He says, "Talk about cultural appropriation!" So we do. This song is playing on the radio. There are so many lines in here that got me: "Always was the one you thought would never marry" in particular. #SongoftheDay Maybe Tomorrow (Stereophonics)

You think we're listening to Stereophonics because the word came up in a song the other day, but no! We're listening to them because they are Welsh. And I'm going to admit something shameful: even though one of my grandmothers was from Wales, I still can never tell whether a character on a TV show is played by a Welsh actor who has an actual Welsh accent, or whether it's an actor doing a bad Welsh accent. Isn't that awful? I should be able to tell, considering my partial Welshness.  And I spent a lot of time with that grandmother, as a kid. She used to babysit me and my cousin while our parents were at work. My earliest memories are of watching I Dream of Jeannie with my Welsh grandmother. Mind you, by the time I was born my grandmother did have a type of facial paralysis that affected her speech, so I'm not sure what her accent sounded like before then. Anyway, that's my shameful announcement for today: I can't tell a real Welsh accent from a fake one...
