This song popped into my head while I was cleaning my apartment. Not sure why. I'm very frustrated and angry over the state of my apartment at the moment. If I get into it right now, I'm just going to get angrier and more frustrated. So maybe this is a story for another time. Maybe not. We shall see. Lots on the go, where housing is concerned. Very stressful.

I've been falling asleep to an episode of Midsomer Murders called The Silent Land for the past... oh, three months? (I like repetition) and that episode begins with Joyce and Cully at a music concert of what Cully refers to as "all that folky stuff."  The song we hear performed is this one.  Cully doesn't like this music and she's squirming and rolling her eyes as the performer is singing. I don't buy that a professional actor would be so rude.  I used to work in a theatre, and the actors there are the people who taught me how to be a good audience member. #SongoftheDay Here's That Rainy Day (Wes Montgomery)

 I was raised to be frugal, and it worked. All my life, I've been frugal beyond frugal--you could call me "cheap," even.  It would be true. I was taught to save for a rainy day, and that's what I've always done.  My annual earnings are low (consistently well below the poverty line) to the point that my tax accountant thinks I'm hiding something from him.  I'm not. But he gives me deep discounts because he says I can't afford him. He's right.   At least I can claim his services... on my taxes. But I didn't come here to talk about taxes.  I came here to talk about rainy days. When I started saving, I thought I would one day buy a house. Well, now I'm middle-aged and there are parking spots in Toronto I still couldn't afford. I realized long ago that my savings were there for that day when everything fell apart. My partner took me to see Death of a Salesman at Stratford for my birthday. I think it was one of those gifts that was actually for him, since I don't need any additional encouragement to feel massively depressed, but we'll set that aside because he bought me a delicious pizza afterwards. Anyway. The production used this tune throughout the performance. It was played on a trumpet, which happens to be the instrument I learned when I took band class in middle school. Have I ever told you that? I don't think I have. I was really good at it, too. #SongoftheDay I'm Getting Sentimental Over You (Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra)

I've been feeling so sick the past few days that I've barely had the energy to watch TV--and that's saying something. Watching TV isn't exactly a gruelling task. But one of my meds has been making me sick to my stomach, and after days of this I am just so weak. It's times like this when I realize how much my partner does to take care of me and to take care of our surroundings when I'm unwell. I'm noticing how much he does because he's not here. He's at his house; I'm at my place. And my place is a mess because I don't have the energy to clean it properly. Now I'm realizing that usually, when I'm sick, he does the dishes, he dries them and puts them away so we don't have a kitchen full of dirty dishes. Normally when I'm sick to my stomach, he runs to the bathroom with me and holds my hair. If my hair is pulled back, he pets my head because he says he doesn't know what else to do. Robbie Robertson died last week. You probably know that by now, but it hit my partner pretty hard. He loved The Band. He owns The Last Waltz, the concert recording from which this clip was taken, on DVD. We've watched the second half of the film Once Were Brothers twice on TV. Each time we tuned in late and missed the start. Just another excuse to watch it again, this time from the beginning. "Somewhere Down the Crazy River" is a Robbie Robertson song I love, but it has already been our song of the day. It reminds me of late nights at the cottage, playing board games with my family, and it comes on the radio and it tells you you're ready for sleep. I found this post in my drafts, obviously written back when my partner still had his house: I'm sitting in the backyard at my partner's place and a cardinal lands on our patio table, which is drenched because it's been raining all day. The cardinal has something in its beak. At first, I'm not sure what. Then it sets the thing down on the tabletop, and I can see that it's a moth. The cardinal plucks off the moth's wings one by one, and they flutter around before sticking to the wet glass table. Once the moth has no wings, the cardinal takes the moth-body in its beak and flies away. This song is playing on the radio.

Oh man, did I fall down a rabbit hole after yesterday's post. Remember how I couldn't rememember the name of the dance party show that was on when I was a teen? I remembered. It was Electric Circus. So then I started looking for clips from Electric Circus, and I did find some, but I was a teen before internet-times, so the clips available were digitized from people's VCR recordings, complete with starts and ends of commercials. Remember when you'd pause the recording at the commercial, and then you'd try to gauge when was a good time to restart it so that you wouldn't miss any of your show, but you also wouldn't waste too much tape? This was a very nostalgic rabbit hole. But not conducive to video posting for our particular purposes. I came across the 1995 NYE countdown of the top 10 songs, but I don't know if it meant top 10 on Electric Circus or... in a certain genre, or... that part of the recording had been cut, so I can't say for sure.
