#SongoftheDay Ten Again (Half Moon Run)

By

Before Christmas, I listened to a pay-to-play day on Toronto radio station Indie88. They were raising money for a charity that provides new socks to people experiencing homelessness. You could pay $25 to hear any song, and that money would go to the sock initiative.

Many of the requests seemed to be nostalgic garbage songs for 90s kids--like "Can we really get this indie station to play this trash?" sort of thing. But this song popped up too, and I like it. The first time I ever heard Half Moon Run, it was on The Signal, and those artists always hold a special place in my musical heart.

I get an Eleanor Rigby vibe off the chorus. Hear what I mean?

What is this? Where am I? What's it all about?

All good questions. Let me explain. My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day, starting June 1 2019, to share with you whichever song pops into my head. Why?  What's the point? Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. Over the years, I've become increasingly socially isolated and you know what? It sucks. It sucks bad. The truth of the matter is that a lot of us are socially isolated, these days. And not just older people--younger ones, too.  There are "friendly visitor" programs for seniors, but those of us under 65 are kind of lost at sea. I speak from experience. Let me be your friendly visitor! If you need a no-pressure visit every day, let me be your visitor. I'll bring a song--whichever song pops into my head, gets stuck in my head, or seems relevant...

#SongoftheDay Bean Song (Josh Groban)

I'm sorry for everything that's about to happen. You probably don't need to know this about me, but I miss farting. I used to do it all the time. I farted freely, whenever I wanted to.  Now that I live with a man, I try very hard to keep my gas inside me. Sometimes I feel like Kenny in that episode of South Park where he spontaneously combusts from holding in his farts. If I ever spontaneously combust, I'm telling you right now: that's why. Maybe I'm becoming a romantic, though, because if I had to choose between singledom and farting freely or living with my partner and holding it in, I would definitely choose my partner. I love the guy, and choosing farts over love is kind of... well, a very appealing option at times... but I'll stick with love for now. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who ar...

#SongoftheDay Wonderful (Lianne La Havas)

My partner's fatigue is getting worse by the day. I've written about this before, but it just keeps happening. Somehow, we expect him to feel better, even though his oncology team assured us the side effects of radiation would get worse after treatment. It really is amazing how much we didn't listen, or didn't believe them, even though they've seen thousands of cancer patients. One thing the medical professionals all say is that everybody's experience with cancer and treatment and recovery is different. They can give us an overview, but they can't give us exact dates when my partner will get his tastebuds back, or stop sleeping so much, or when his radiation burns will heal completely, or when his mouth sores will go away, or when his throat will stop hurting. I'm so glad one of the professionals on his oncology team told us not to be surprised if one day feels a little brighter, then the next day he's back in hell. That has definitely been happe...

#SongoftheDay Really Wanna Let You Down (Monowhales)

By
Image
This song has been on the radio a lot lately, and every time I hear it, the same scene replays in my head: I'm at my partner's place and he's just come home from the library.  He takes off his coat and hat and gloves and boots and sits in a chair and puts his feet up.  I've been sitting on the floor, because it's warmest near the fireplace, but as soon as I see his feet, I need to touch them. So I do. I get close and I massage his feet--something I don't think I've ever done. He says, "I've always wanted a foot massage--a professional one, I mean, though the amateur version is very good." The book Memoirs of a Geisha pops into my head, and I tell him so. He says, "Talk about cultural appropriation!" So we do. This song is playing on the radio. I've heard it before, but I hear it differently when I notice my partner glancing at the radio, like he'll be able to see the song more clearly. I feel slightly anxious. I...

#SongoftheDay Improvisation in Cm (Indiara Sfair & Arthur Sowinski)

I'm sitting on my bed trying to edit a monster of a book (it needs A LOT of work!) and outside my window what do I hear? Harmonica. Somebody practices the harmonica around this time every afternoon (it's 3:30 as I write this post) and you know what? They're pretty darn good.  Not this good.  Not yet.  But getting better every day. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely! I'm also an  Amazon Influencer,  so hopefully I can make a little pocket change when you buy stuff by clicking through  my affiliate links . But you don't HAVE to do any of that. I'm very happy to get a daily visit...

#SongoftheDay Pepto Bismol Commercial Remix (Chosakken)

By

My partner has a love-hate relationship with this song. Every time the commercial comes on, he notes that it's remarkably well-done, but since when do people grab their butts and sing about diarrhea onscreen? 1989, I guess? That's when the movie Parenthood came out.  I am delighted that there's a remix so that I can share this tune with you AND take up more than 16 seconds of your time. This remix is my everything. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you know--particularly people who are isolated and enjoy music. Readers of adult fiction can also buy my books or check them out from your local library. #SongoftheDay Riptide (Vance Joy)

By

Last week, my partner was talking about the movie Midnight Cowboy , which I'd never seen. I laughed because I've been watching Futurama on DVD lately, and the film is spoofed briefly in one episode. I never got the reference until my partner described Midnight Cowboy to me. Ever since, I've had this song--Riptide--in my head, just floating around back there, not demanding terribly much attention.  This morning, I recited some of the lyrics to my partner and said, "Do you think he's talking about Midnight Cowboy ?" My partner had, unsurprisingly, never heard Riptide. I honestly don't know where he's been for the past 40 years, because he doesn't seem to be familiar with any music that was created after 1979. Anyway, I played my partner the lyric video (he was particularly amused by the line "I want to be your left hand man"), and when it mentioned the "movie that I think you'd like," he said that did sound like Midnight Cow...

#SongoftheDay Cheers Theme: Where Everybody Knows Your Name (Gary Portnoy)

By
Image
A lot has changed since I first created this blog. Even more changes happened while the blog was on hiatus. Most notably, my partner was diagnosed with cancer. He is currently receiving treatments, the side effects of which make every day incredibly arduous. When you become a caregiver, everybody tells you that you have to take care of yourself first--the whole oxygen mask thing. Even my partner tells me I need to take care of myself first, particularly because I have chronic health conditions that make it almost impossible to function some days. It feels kind of ridiculous sometimes, the two of us trying to take care of each other when we're both sick. We need so much help, and right now we have nothing. All we've got is each other. Every time someone tells me to take care of myself first, I wonder how I'm supposed to do that when my partner's needs are so immediate and life-or-death. He is not a demanding person. Cancer is demanding. It takes over your entire life...

#SongoftheDay I've Tried Everything (Eurythmics)

By

I have been incredibly ill. Emergency room, IV fluids, diagnostic equipment, more meds.  I'm so sorry for taking off without letting you know what was going on, but there are times when it can't be helped. I've missed sharing music with you. I think in terms of posts I want to write, but for a while I couldn't come near my computer. Now I don't remember what I wanted to say. Figures, eh? This song came into my mind at a time when I truly believed I would never get better. Time and treatment didn't seem to make any difference. I was just so sick all the time. At this point, I don't know whether I'm "better" or whether the new medication I'm on is just keeping me stable. More medical appointments to come.  Meanwhile, various other portions of my life are falling apart. Not my relationship. That's strong. My partner has been taking good care of me physically, and I'm trying to take good care of him emotionally, but now is not a happy t...

#SongoftheDay Are You Serious (Andrew Bird)

By
Image
This song had me from the start. I first heard it on Laurie Brown's CBC Radio 2 program The Signal. There are so many lines in here that got me: "Always was the one you thought would never marry" in particular. It's become a bit of a theme song ever since things with my partner have started getting... well... serious. Yes, Virginia, there is a vinyl album! But you don't HAVE to do any of that. I'm very happy to get a daily visit from you, so just keep coming back. Oh, and I also recommend hitting the "Subscribe" button at the top of the page s...
