What is this? Where am I? What's it all about?

All good questions. Let me explain.

My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day, starting June 1 2019, to share with you whichever song pops into my head.

Why?  What's the point?

Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. Over the years, I've become increasingly socially isolated and you know what? It sucks. It sucks bad.

The truth of the matter is that a lot of us are socially isolated, these days. And not just older people--younger ones, too.  There are "friendly visitor" programs for seniors, but those of us under 65 are kind of lost at sea. I speak from experience.

Let me be your friendly visitor!

If you need a no-pressure visit every day, let me be your visitor. I'll bring a song--whichever song pops into my head, gets stuck in my head, or seems relevant to something that day.

As a person with chronic depression, music has helped me more than anything. It's magic, I swear. I hope my little musical visits will give you something to look forward to every day, because they'll certainly do that for me.

What kind of music can you expect?

I listen to a lot of indie rock and alternative these days, but I grew up listening to pop music from the 50s and 60s (the songs of my father's generation). I also love jazz standards, folk, classic rock, opera, commercial jingles from the 80s... my tastes are eclectic, to say the least. I will definitely surprise you.

Hello, my friends. This blog stopped rather abruptly, didn't it? I always thought I had signed off, but it turns out I didn't. I just left you hanging. For two years. That's shameful. I'm back in disco mode these days. That tends to happen when I'm well enough to exercise, because I exercise by doing disco dancing workouts. One big lesson I learned from all these Dutch decluttering videos I've been watching on YouTube is not to keep stuff that makes me feel bad. That's why I've been getting rid of all (most) of my books from university. They were super-expensive and I didn't always manage to do all my readings because I was simultaneously working full-time to put myself through school. So every time I looked at all these books on my bookshelf, I felt guilty for spending so much money on books I never read, guilty for not getting all my readings done, irritated that I had to put myself through school in the first place, and ashamed for having been such a lousy student. My partner brought The Shape of Water home from the library the other day. Neither of us had seen it. He'd never even heard of it. I said, "Isn't that the movie about a woman having sex with some kind of sea creature?" His eyes sort of widened, like he didn't realize what he'd gotten us into. Anyway, we watched it and it was surprisingly lovely. All I'd heard about it was the sex with a sea creature bit, but gosh it had a lot (more) going for it. I never would have picked up that DVD, but I'm glad my partner did. The film really surprised me. It's dreamy and fairy-tale-ish but also suspenseful and gruesome (I had to close my eyes a lot toward the end). #SongoftheDay Let's Turkey Trot (Little Eva)

I promised you a story about a frozen turkey, so here it is. If you've read my story about the watermelon, this is basically the same story. There are a few exceptions, the main one (in my mind) being that my partner wasn't there for the watermelon, but he was there for the turkey. My partner and I were shopping together when I noticed an elderly woman trying (unsuccessfully) to pick up a frozen turkey. So I went over to her and asked if I could help. She told me she'd tried to pick up a frozen turkey by its tag, but the tag had ripped off in her hand and she couldn't lift the bird. I told her I would do it for her and then, of course, I couldn't. Lifting a frozen turkey is something I could have done easily prior to living with chronic illness. I was very strong. I probably could have juggled them, if I knew how to juggle. This song has been on the radio a lot lately, and every time I hear it, the same scene replays in my head: I'm at my partner's place and he's just come home from the library.  He takes off his coat and hat and gloves and boots and sits in a chair and puts his feet up.  I've been sitting on the floor, because it's warmest near the fireplace, but as soon as I see his feet, I need to touch them. So I do. I get close and I massage his feet--something I don't think I've ever done. He says, "I've always wanted a foot massage--a professional one, I mean, though the amateur version is very good." The other evening, I was folding clothes on my partner's bed. He walked into the bedroom with his arms full of laundry and playfully asked, "What are YOUR clothes doing on MY side of the bed?" We proceeded to fold laundry together. I watched him go at it and said, "Wow, you could work at The Gap!" He agreed. He is an excellent folder. I couldn't stop smiling.
