#SongoftheDay The Shape of Water (Alexandre Desplat)

My partner brought The Shape of Water home from the library the other day. Neither of us had seen it. He'd never even heard of it. I said, "Isn't that the movie about a woman having sex with some kind of sea creature?" His eyes sort of widened, like he didn't realize what he'd gotten us into.

Anyway, we watched it and it was surprisingly lovely. All I'd heard about it was the sex with a sea creature bit, but gosh it had a lot (more) going for it. I never would have picked up that DVD, but I'm glad my partner did. The film really surprised me. It's dreamy and fairy-tale-ish but also suspenseful and gruesome (I had to close my eyes a lot toward the end).

Hello, my friends. This blog stopped rather abruptly, didn't it? I always thought I had signed off, but it turns out I didn't. I just left you hanging. For two years. That's shameful. One big lesson I learned from all these Dutch decluttering videos I've been watching on YouTube is not to keep stuff that makes me feel bad. That's why I've been getting rid of all (most) of my books from university. They were super-expensive and I didn't always manage to do all my readings because I was simultaneously working full-time to put myself through school. So every time I looked at all these books on my bookshelf, I felt guilty for spending so much money on books I never read, guilty for not getting all my readings done, irritated that I had to put myself through school in the first place, and ashamed for having been such a lousy student. The other evening, I was folding clothes on my partner's bed. He walked into the bedroom with his arms full of laundry and playfully asked, "What are YOUR clothes doing on MY side of the bed?" We proceeded to fold laundry together. I watched him go at it and said, "Wow, you could work at The Gap!" He agreed. He is an excellent folder. I couldn't stop smiling. That's when this song popped into my head. I'm not fancy. I don't need expensive dinners and vacations. I don't even want that. I'm the type that goes for quiet nights at home. This song has been on the radio a lot lately, and every time I hear it, the same scene replays in my head: I'm at my partner's place and he's just come home from the library.  He takes off his coat and hat and gloves and boots and sits in a chair and puts his feet up.  I've been sitting on the floor, because it's warmest near the fireplace, but as soon as I see his feet, I need to touch them. So I do. I get close and I massage his feet--something I don't think I've ever done. He says, "I've always wanted a foot massage--a professional one, I mean, though the amateur version is very good." The book Memoirs of a Geisha pops into my head, and I tell him so. He says, "Talk about cultural appropriation!" So we do. This song is playing on the radio. #SongoftheDay All Things Bright and Beautiful (Singapore Symphony Children's Choir)

 We listened to a theme from a TV show yesterday. Today's song is also TV-inspired. My partner and I watched the first season of the new All Creatures Great and Small series on PBS, and we loved it.  He has a connection to the show in that his parents enjoyed the books as well as the series that was made in the... 90s? 80s? 70s?  I forget when.  I never watched it. This song always reminds me of my partner, because he is so good at seeing beauty in the world. It's really impressive.  I did an online course in mindfulness last year, and so much of it was trying to learn all this stuff that comes naturally to my partner. Even if he's in a sour mood, even if we're in the middle of a disagreement, he will undoubtedly spot a flower or a sunset or a tree or a bird or SOMETHING he finds beautiful, and he'll point it out to me.  My partner fell on the ice the other day. He wasn't hurt--don't worry--but it put him in a sour mood and made me feel especially vulnerable.   A couple weeks ago, I told my sister I've been staying indoors more because I'm scared of slipping on the ice.  She said, "Wow. You got old."   Last week, I did happen to be out, cutting across a park whose path had not been cleared.  It was snow over ice underfoot, and I was walking extremely slowly, careful of every step. Then this young person comes jogging past me and all I can think is, "Are you nuts? You're gonna break your neck!" I do sound old.  I feel old.  Slipping on ice can be fatal, when you reach a certain age. My mother's doctor died slipping on ice in his driveway.   Last winter, my partner fell on the ice and hit his head.  He was in excruciating pain and he lost time--didn't know where we were or what day/month/year it was.  That was really scary.  Luckily, the woman approa...

I just had this random memory of a time when my partner and I were first going out (well, staying in, more like).  I was actually working a job outside the home at the time. It was only a two-week gig, but I'm used to the freedom of a writer's life.  My partner was always on my mind. I thought about him obsessively, like a teenager. I felt young again.  It was amazing. The job I had was out by the airport.  Since I have a terrible phone plan with no data, I would run over to the hotel across the street and use their wifi to send naughty emails to this man I was so wrapped up in. I always wanted to be in his arms, but the best I could do during those daytime shifts was think about him and email him and crave him like candy. Now I sleep beside him every night. Often I feel lucky to have this incredible person by my side, but sometimes I miss that spark of the beginning stages of a relationship. #SongoftheDay The Pharaohs (Neko Case)

Yesterday's song was pretty hopeful. Today's? Not so much. "The Pharaohs" is my favourite track from the album Middle Cyclone , and that's saying something-- Middle Cyclone has got the song Prison Girls going for it. In fact, Middle Cyclone is one of my all-time favourite albums.  There's no dross here.  Only quality tracks.  And they fit together.  That's what I look for in an album: cohesive tone and no filler. Two days ago we listened to "It's Raining Men." Men, men, as far as the eye can see.  Yesterday it was "Holding Out For A Hero." No quality men yet, but still hope that one will rear his head. In "The Pharaohs" we've got a man... but he's no hero. This song suggests there are no heroes.  Only men. And the man in this song isn't the greatest, from the sounds of it.
