#SongoftheDay Blue Skies (Ella Fitzgerald)

By
My partner took me to see Death of a Salesman at Stratford for my birthday. I think it was one of those gifts that was actually for him, since I don't need any additional encouragement to feel massively depressed, but we'll set that aside because he bought me a delicious pizza afterwards.

Anyway.

The production used this tune throughout the performance. It was played on a trumpet, which happens to be the instrument I learned when I took band class in middle school. Have I ever told you that? I don't think I have. I was really good at it, too.

If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.

See you soon!

What is this? Where am I? What's it all about?

All good questions. Let me explain. My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day, starting June 1 2019, to share with you whichever song pops into my head. Why?  What's the point? Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. Over the years, I've become increasingly socially isolated and you know what? It sucks. It sucks bad. The truth of the matter is that a lot of us are socially isolated, these days. And not just older people--younger ones, too.  There are "friendly visitor" programs for seniors, but those of us under 65 are kind of lost at sea. I speak from experience. Let me be your friendly visitor! If you need a no-pressure visit every day, let me be your visitor. I'll bring a song--whichever song pops into my head, gets stuck in my head, or seems relevant...

#SongoftheDay I've Tried Everything (Eurythmics)

By
Image
I have been incredibly ill. Emergency room, IV fluids, diagnostic equipment, more meds.  I'm so sorry for taking off without letting you know what was going on, but there are times when it can't be helped. I've missed sharing music with you. I think in terms of posts I want to write, but for a while I couldn't come near my computer. Now I don't remember what I wanted to say. Figures, eh? This song came into my mind at a time when I truly believed I would never get better. Time and treatment didn't seem to make any difference. I was just so sick all the time. At this point, I don't know whether I'm "better" or whether the new medication I'm on is just keeping me stable. More medical appointments to come.  Meanwhile, various other portions of my life are falling apart. Not my relationship. That's strong. My partner has been taking good care of me physically, and I'm trying to take good care of him emotionally, but now is not a happy t...

#SongoftheDay The Middle (Jimmy Eat World)

We're moving next week. We're not happy about the move, but it's happening nonetheless. I'm going to miss this little house. I know how fortunate I am to live indoors at all, but the past three years have been the only time in my entire adult life when I've been able to live in a house, and going back to living in a high rise isn't something I'm enthusiastic about. The house and town (despite being very small--both the house and the town) are way too expensive to live in. Plus, there's the lack of access to medical care and public transportation.  So we're moving. I'm really sad. And stressed. And busy with all the packing. And my health is poor, as usual. Ill health makes sadness and stress even harder to cope with. That's the big reason I haven't been around. It occurs to me that the last time this blog went on a big hiatus was the last time we moved. It really does consume your life and energy. This song has been in my head every day f...

#SongoftheDay 1984 (Tina Turner)

By
Image
I was watching a murder mystery the other day, and the detective found a clue in the victim's journal: it was an ancient sepia photograph of the woman when she was a child. The photograph was dated... 1984. 1984? Okay, speaking as someone who was also a child in 1984, I can tell you that none of my childhood photos are sepia-toned! I do have quite a few black-and-white pictures of my sister and myself, but that's just because my father was kind of artsy with his camera and he would sometimes buy black-and-white film. But the vast majority of photos taken in 1984 were in full colour. Definitely not sepia! I wondered how old the prop person on that TV show was, and if they thought photography in 1984 was basically the same as photography in 1884. This is a cover of a Bowie song, by the way. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your...

#SongoftheDay Working in a Coal Mine (Lee Dorsey)

Last week, I wrote you a post about spending 7+ hours at the hospital with my partner. Just a day in the life of Giselle. When we got home from the hospital, I wanted to crash. I was exhausted beyond exhaustion, but I had to make dinner. My partner's doctors keep emphasizing to us how important it is for him to keep eating, even though it hurts, even though he can't stand the sight of food sometimes. They want him to keep eating in order to keep his swallowing muscles in working order, and in order to keep his weight up. The oncological dietitian we met with explained how important it is to pack every bite with protein and fats. He's supposed to eat dairy with the highest fat content we can find. Put butter and gravy on everything. If in doubt, add ice cream. Sounds like a dream, except that my partner can no longer taste anything. Plus, it hurts. It hurts so much my partner's doctors have prescribed him all kind of pain meds to take prior to eating, plus a disgus...

#SongoftheDay Day After Day (Badfinger)

By
Image
I'll be honest with you: I didn't know Badfinger was a band until I googled musicians from Wales. I was familiar with this song, but I never knew who it was by. Now I actually understand the joke that mentions them in the Rifftrax riff of Psycho II (yes, that's an actual movie).  (edit: the riff I was thinking of is actually from Amityville 4, which is another lousy sequel.)   If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and anecdotes, the easiest thing you can do is buy my books (most are for adults only!) or check them out from your local library.  Supporting my  AudioErotica  endeavour on  Patreon  would also help me hugely. I'm also an  Amazon Influencer,  so hopefully I can make a little pocket change when you buy stuff by clicking through  my affiliate links . I also recommend subscribing to my newsletter. I generally e-mail subscribers with a weekly update, and I would LOVE to have you on the list.  C...

#SongoftheDay The Dress (Dijon)

By

The other day, I mentioned a dream I had that characterized marriage as being locked in a dull, dark room. Well, the next night I dreamed that I showed up at my aunt's cottage (my aunt doesn't have a cottage) with my wedding dress (I don't have a wedding dress). Clearly, marriage is bubbling around in my unconscious mind. I never wanted to get married, when I was young. Now... I'm not sure I have particularly strong feelings either way. If I lean toward wanting marriage in my life, it's more for practical (legal, financial, etc) reasons, at this point. My partner and I were both self-sufficient adults when we joined forces. I don't feel like we ever really "built" a life together. I still have my own home. He has his. His is better. We spent the summer at my place while he underwent daily cancer treatments in the city. I've never taken care of anyone as intensively as I've taken care of him, except when my siblings were young. We've kn...

#SongoftheDay The Sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel)

By
Image
I had an episode of The Simpsons on last week called Lady Bouvier's Lover, I think?  It's the one where Grandpa Simpson courts Marge's mother. I've referred to it often during Covid, because it's got that one scene where Grandpa goes into the retirement home to grab Mrs. Bouvier and he comes out with the wrong woman, and that old lady says, "Can I come too?"   You know what I'm talking about. Anyway, I quote that line a lot, these days. I've got nothing going on, so any time my partner is going anywhere, I'm right on that "Can I come too?" At the end of the episode, there's a spoof on this song called "The Sound of Grandpa," which is what I was going to play for you... but my partner loves Simon and Garfunkel, so I'm going for the original. In his honour. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell a...

#SongoftheDay Cheers Theme: Where Everybody Knows Your Name (Gary Portnoy)

By
Image
A lot has changed since I first created this blog. Even more changes happened while the blog was on hiatus. Most notably, my partner was diagnosed with cancer. He is currently receiving treatments, the side effects of which make every day incredibly arduous. When you become a caregiver, everybody tells you that you have to take care of yourself first--the whole oxygen mask thing. Even my partner tells me I need to take care of myself first, particularly because I have chronic health conditions that make it almost impossible to function some days. It feels kind of ridiculous sometimes, the two of us trying to take care of each other when we're both sick. We need so much help, and right now we have nothing. All we've got is each other. Every time someone tells me to take care of myself first, I wonder how I'm supposed to do that when my partner's needs are so immediate and life-or-death. He is not a demanding person. Cancer is demanding. It takes over your entire life...

#SongoftheDay Pinky and the Brain Theme Song (Postmodern Jukebox Cover)

By
Image
Whether you were a child in the 90s or an adult who just happened to enjoy a quality animated series, you probably loved Pinky and the Brain as much as I did. Cartoons really spoke to me, when I was a kid. My household was plagued by domestic violence, and I swear there were times when cartoons saved me.  I had Strawberry Shortcake bedsheets and a Smurfs blanket, and when the world was crashing down outside my door (literally--there was a lot of crashing in my house), I would burrow under the covers and pretend I was in Cartoon World with all my favourite characters. I know that sounds like a bummer of a story, but take it as encouragement, especially if you're a creator like me. Sometimes, when the world is crashing down at our feet, writing erotica (or whatever it is you do--I don't know your life) just doesn't seem all that important. But I can GUARANTEE you the thing you're creating will alleviate someone's pain, somewhere, somehow.  Never quit creating. ...
