Oh, I... don't like this song. BUT it's earworm-level catchy, so it's been stuck in my head since I scheduled yesterday's post. I don't think I need to explain why, but I will anyway: 
 
Yesterday we listened to Mr. Mister, and so obviously my brain kept going: "Ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio?"

I've been falling asleep to an episode of Midsomer Murders called The Silent Land for the past... oh, three months? (I like repetition) and that episode begins with Joyce and Cully at a music concert of what Cully refers to as "all that folky stuff."  The song we hear performed is this one.  Cully doesn't like this music and she's squirming and rolling her eyes as the performer is singing. I don't buy that a professional actor would be so rude.  I used to work in a theatre, and the actors there are the people who taught me how to be a good audience member. When I say "good" I guess I actually mean "engaged" because the actors taught me to laugh and react, to give the performers on stage energy to work with.  So I don't buy a character who is supposed to be a stage actor being sullen and rude, even if she wasn't enjoying the show.  Anyway, that's my random episode of Midsomer Murders deep dive for the day. #SongoftheDay This Is How We Do It (Montell Jordan)

Oh man, did I fall down a rabbit hole after yesterday's post. Remember how I couldn't rememember the name of the dance party show that was on when I was a teen? I remembered. It was Electric Circus. So then I started looking for clips from Electric Circus, and I did find some, but I was a teen before internet-times, so the clips available were digitized from people's VCR recordings, complete with starts and ends of commercials. Remember when you'd pause the recording at the commercial, and then you'd try to gauge when was a good time to restart it so that you wouldn't miss any of your show, but you also wouldn't waste too much tape? This was a very nostalgic rabbit hole. But not conducive to video posting for our particular purposes. I came across the 1995 NYE countdown of the top 10 songs, but I don't know if it meant top 10 on Electric Circus or... in a certain genre, or... that part of the recording had been cut, so I can't say for sure.  I was raised to be frugal, and it worked. All my life, I've been frugal beyond frugal--you could call me "cheap," even.  It would be true. I was taught to save for a rainy day, and that's what I've always done.  My annual earnings are low (consistently well below the poverty line) to the point that my tax accountant thinks I'm hiding something from him.  I'm not. But he gives me deep discounts because he says I can't afford him. He's right.   At least I can claim his services... on my taxes. But I didn't come here to talk about taxes.  I came here to talk about rainy days. When I started saving, I thought I would one day buy a house. I've been feeling so sick the past few days that I've barely had the energy to watch TV--and that's saying something. Watching TV isn't exactly a gruelling task. But one of my meds has been making me sick to my stomach, and after days of this I am just so weak. It's times like this when I realize how much my partner does to take care of me and to take care of our surroundings when I'm unwell. I'm noticing how much he does because he's not here. He's at his house; I'm at my place. And my place is a mess because I don't have the energy to clean it properly. Now I'm realizing that usually, when I'm sick, he does the dishes, he dries them and puts them away so we don't have a kitchen full of dirty dishes. Normally when I'm sick to my stomach, he runs to the bathroom with me and holds my hair. If my hair is pulled back, he pets my head because he says he doesn't know what else to do. #SongoftheDay The Weight (The Band ft. The Staples Singers)

Robbie Robertson died last week. You probably know that by now, but it hit my partner pretty hard. He loved The Band. He owns The Last Waltz, the concert recording from which this clip was taken, on DVD. We've watched the second half of the film Once Were Brothers twice on TV. Each time we tuned in late and missed the start. Just another excuse to watch it again, this time from the beginning. "Somewhere Down the Crazy River" is a Robbie Robertson song I love, but it has already been our song of the day. It reminds me of late nights at the cottage, playing board games with my family, and it comes on the radio and it tells you you're ready for sleep. I'll be honest with you: I didn't know Badfinger was a band until I googled musicians from Wales. I was familiar with this song, but I never knew who it was by.  While this music blog of mine was on hiatus, I thought about it every day. I missed telling you what was going on in my life. I missed telling you which song had just popped into my head. Like this one. It popped into my head while I was packing up the bathroom. My father was a big Kenny Rogers fan, so I remember hearing this song a lot as a kid.  I always liked it. I have a sister who is in her thirties. We don't spend much time together, in part because of the age difference (we're always at vastly disparate life stages) and in part because we live in different cities/towns, but we were out together a couple weeks ago and a teenage boy called me ma'am. My sister burst out laughing. I didn't get the joke. She was like "Ma'am!" That was the joke, I guess. If she spent more time with me, she would know just how often I get called ma'am. I don't even hear it anymore. And if she just waits a few more years, it's very likely that teenagers will start calling her ma'am, too. (I'll wait a little while to warn her that eventually people who are OLDER than you start calling you ma'am as well...)
