Something woke us at four in the morning. It was the unmistakeable sound of racoons doing acrobatics on the roof. Except we couldn't be sure: roof or attic? Only one way to find out: we got out my bike light (extremely bright) and started doing laps around the house. Sure enough, a racoon was trying to peel open one of the vents. It was on the roof, not in the attic. There's a relief.

When we got back indoors, I realized my pyjama pants were covered in mud. I had to change before getting back into bed. But then I couldn't sleep. I just kept listening for the racoon we'd chased off to come back.

I finally fell asleep again, and dreamed that my teeth were falling out.

This song sounds like the kind of track a person should listen to at four in the morning. Better than an acrobatic racoon.

I have been incredibly ill. Emergency room, IV fluids, diagnostic equipment, more meds.  I'm so sorry for taking off without letting you know what was going on, but there are times when it can't be helped. We're moving next week. We're not happy about the move, but it's happening nonetheless. I'm going to miss this little house. I know how fortunate I am to live indoors at all, but the past three years have been the only time in my entire adult life when I've been able to live in a house, and going back to living in a high rise isn't something I'm enthusiastic about. The house and town (despite being very small--both the house and the town) are way too expensive to live in. Plus, there's the lack of access to medical care and public transportation.  So we're moving. I'm really sad. And stressed. And busy with all the packing. And my health is poor, as usual. Ill health makes sadness and stress even harder to cope with. That's the big reason I haven't been around.  I had an episode of The Simpsons on last week called Lady Bouvier's Lover, I think?  It's the one where Grandpa Simpson courts Marge's mother. I've referred to it often during Covid, because it's got that one scene where Grandpa goes into the retirement home to grab Mrs. Bouvier and he comes out with the wrong woman, and that old lady says, "Can I come too?"   You know what I'm talking about. Anyway, I quote that line a lot, these days. I've got nothing going on, so any time my partner is going anywhere, I'm right on that "Can I come too?" At the end of the episode, there's a spoof on this song called "The Sound of Grandpa," which is what I was going to play for you... but my partner loves Simon and Garfunkel, so I'm going for the original. A lot has changed since I first created this blog. Even more changes happened while the blog was on hiatus. Most notably, my partner was diagnosed with cancer. He is currently receiving treatments, the side effects of which make every day incredibly arduous. When you become a caregiver, everybody tells you that you have to take care of yourself first--the whole oxygen mask thing. Even my partner tells me I need to take care of myself first, particularly because I have chronic health conditions that make it almost impossible to function some days. It feels kind of ridiculous sometimes, the two of us trying to take care of each other when we're both sick. We need so much help, and right now we have nothing. All we've got is each other. Every time someone tells me to take care of myself first, I wonder how I'm supposed to do that when my partner's needs are so immediate and life-or-death. He is not a demanding person. Cancer is demanding. It takes over your entire life...

Oh, this song... I've started checking out CDs from the library (actual physical CDs from the actual physical library) and was lucky enough to find two albums from Purity Ring at one location. I was familiar with Purity Ring from back when I used to listen to CBC Radio Two.  Pretty sure they got a lot of airplay on a show called The Signal, which I miss every day of my life. This song, Bodyache, is the second track on an album called ANOTHER ETERNITY .  It's so pleading and pained, and when I heard the line "I cried until my body ached," I knew I'd come back to this song when I needed it. And I did, the next time I cried like that--a full-body sob, to the point where you feel like you're going to throw up and you think it's impossible for more tears to come out. I've got Covid

Hi Friends, Turns out the reason I've been so sick is that I have Covid. I tested negative two days ago, but this morning the test came back positive. I'm in a lot of pain--especially my throat and my head, at the moment--and the pain in my eyes is making it very hard to look at this screen.  So I'm going to take some time off, here, while I recover. When I can comfortably look at my screen and I have the energy to return, you know I'll be back.
