My health has been terrible this week. Truly and genuinely terrible and awful. Every night, as I go to bed, I think to myself: I should be in a hospital right now. Why am I not in a hospital right now?

The pills my doctor put me on had terrible side effects. I've felt like I was going to die for five days straight. I haven't died yet, and hopefully I won't. We'll see how this all plays out.

My partner has this theory that life is irony. I never used to take care of my health. I never used to see a doctor when I was sick. Now I finally start being a responsible adult human, and the cures are going to kill me.

Caregiving when you feel like you're about to drop dead is a lot of fun. You should try it some time. 

Actually, wait, I got that backwards...

What I meant to say is that I wish someone would airlift me out of my life right now.

#SongoftheDay Riptide (Vance Joy)

 Last week, my partner was talking about the movie Midnight Cowboy , which I'd never seen. I laughed because I've been watching Futurama on DVD lately, and the film is spoofed briefly in one episode. I never got the reference until my partner described Midnight Cowboy to me. Ever since, I've had this song--Riptide--in my head, just floating around back there, not demanding terribly much attention.  This morning, I recited some of the lyrics to my partner and said, "Do you think he's talking about Midnight Cowboy ?" My partner had, unsurprisingly, never heard Riptide. I honestly don't know where he's been for the past 40 years, because he doesn't seem to be familiar with any music that was created after 1979. Anyway, I played my partner the lyric video (he was particularly amused by the line "I want to be your left hand man"), and when it mentioned the "movie that I think you'd like," he said that did sound like Midnight Cow...

#SongoftheDay Mercedes Benz (Janis Joplin)

The other day, I mentioned my partner's cousin just died.  He's taking her death pretty hard, and telling me lots of stories about her life. To him, she was always a colourful character.  Their family was very religious and straight-laced, so the fact that she'd done LSD, for example, made her a bad girl in the extreme. My partner recounted to me hearing his cousin sing this song--Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz"--when the adults weren't around and feeling absolutely scandalized. He'd never heard anything so blasphemous. So today's post is going out to my partner's cousin, in loving memory. She's still the talk of the town. #SongoftheDay Sweat A La La La La Long (Inner Circle)

I woke up in a pool of sweat at three in the morning. This is not unusual, but last night's sweat far exceeded the amount of sweat I've sweated on previous occasions. The sheets felt wet beneath me. I could not go back to sleep on them. Fortunately, there is a spare bedroom at my partner's house. Unfortunately, I feel guilty when I use it. I feel bad for leaving him alone in bed. But I really had no choice last night. The sheets were gross. I had to go. After I'd spent the rest of the night in the cool, crisp, DRY sheets of the spare room, I heard my partner starting his day. I got up and apologized for abandoning him. He had no idea what I was talking about. He didn't realize I'd left the bed. Okay, so maybe next time I soak the sheets with sweat, I won't worry so much about heading into the spare room. #SongoftheDay What a Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong)

I didn't expect to be saying these words today (or ever), but after almost 900 daily posts (!!!) I'm going to have to put this beloved little music blog of mine on a brief hiatus.  My partner is moving this month, I'm trying to finish writing a book, I've got a million things to do, and we've reached the something's-gotta-give stage. I love (love, love, love, love) producing this blog for you, but time is at a premium this month and it takes more time than you might expect for me to put together these little posts every day. So I leave you, for the time being, with a special request from my partner. This is "way up there" on his list of favourite songs, and it truly reflects the way he sees the world around him. #SongoftheDay Dream Come True (Frozen Ghost)

It's pretty unusual for my dreams to have a soundtrack, but last night's did. My dream was supposed to be some kind of TV show. I don't know whether it was a crime drama or what, but there was this couple and toward the end of the dream, some hucksters were encouraging them to enter this room. All the cool kids were doing it, that sort of thing. Go in the room. Just go in the room. When we, the viewers, saw inside the room, it was a dull, dark place. Other people were in there. Other couples, I'm guessing. They weren't being tortured or anything. That's what I'd imagined I was about to see: something really horrific. But it wasn't horrific. It was just quiet and boring. Sorry to provide way too much insight into my decimated psyche, but I think this dream was supposed to be about marriage. The narrator (my dreams don't usually have narrators, but this one did, being a TV show and all) kept mentioning engagement rings and proposals. Anyway, I wok...

#SongoftheDay Vesti la giubba (from Pagliacci, performed by Luciano Pavarotti)

After listening to Tears of a Clown yesterday, how could we not play this well-known aria (is it an aria?) from Pagliacci? Pagliacci is, after all, referenced in Tears of a Clown. The two songs have a lot in common--the theme of putting on a face to perform in public after suffering a heartbreak. I'll tell you outright: I feel out of my depth talking about opera. This, despite being a person with an honest-to-god opera subscription. For real. I go to the opera all the time. I love opera. There are a few opera I feel like I can talk about with confidence, but the snobbism that exists in this realm really keeps me from wanting to say anything at all. Even though Pagliacci is a really famous opera, I've never seen it and I know next to nothing about it. Before looking it up, I had no idea the opera was written by Ruggero Leoncavallo. I don't even know who that is. It's an Italian opera from the late 1800s. After watching this Pavarotti clip, boy, do I want to see it....

My partner and I were just watching Land Girls (I've seen it before, but it's much more melodramatic than I remember) and there was a great Billie Holiday song playing in the background of one scene. It wasn't this song. I don't know what song it was. I convinced myself I would remember the lyrics, even though I never remember anything. Sure enough, I don't remember even a single word.
