 I'm sitting on my bed trying to edit a monster of a book (it needs A LOT of work!) and outside my window what do I hear?

Harmonica.

Somebody practices the harmonica around this time every afternoon (it's 3:30 as I write this post) and you know what? They're pretty darn good.  Not this good.  Not yet.  But getting better every day.

 I'm sorry for everything that's about to happen. You probably don't need to know this about me, but I miss farting. I used to do it all the time. I farted freely, whenever I wanted to.  Now that I live with a man, I try very hard to keep my gas inside me. Sometimes I feel like Kenny in that episode of South Park where he spontaneously combusts from holding in his farts. If I ever spontaneously combust, I'm telling you right now: that's why. Maybe I'm becoming a romantic, though, because if I had to choose between singledom and farting freely or living with my partner and holding it in, I would definitely choose my partner. My partner's fatigue is getting worse by the day. I've written about this before, but it just keeps happening. Somehow, we expect him to feel better, even though his oncology team assured us the side effects of radiation would get worse after treatment. It really is amazing how much we didn't listen, or didn't believe them, even though they've seen thousands of cancer patients. One thing the medical professionals all say is that everybody's experience with cancer and treatment and recovery is different. They can give us an overview, but they can't give us exact dates when my partner will get his tastebuds back, or stop sleeping so much, or when his radiation burns will heal completely, or when his mouth sores will go away, or when his throat will stop hurting. This song has been on the radio a lot lately, and every time I hear it, the same scene replays in my head: I'm at my partner's place and he's just come home from the library.  He takes off his coat and hat and gloves and boots and sits in a chair and puts his feet up.  I've been sitting on the floor, because it's warmest near the fireplace, but as soon as I see his feet, I need to touch them. So I do. I get close and I massage his feet--something I don't think I've ever done. He says, "I've always wanted a foot massage--a professional one, I mean, though the amateur version is very good." The book Memoirs of a Geisha pops into my head, and I tell him so. He says, "Talk about cultural appropriation!" So we do. This song is playing on the radio. My partner has a love-hate relationship with this song. Every time the commercial comes on, he notes that it's remarkably well-done, but since when do people grab their butts and sing about diarrhea onscreen? 1989, I guess?  Last week, my partner was talking about the movie Midnight Cowboy , which I'd never seen. I laughed because I've been watching Futurama on DVD lately, and the film is spoofed briefly in one episode. I never got the reference until my partner described Midnight Cowboy to me. Ever since, I've had this song--Riptide--in my head, just floating around back there, not demanding terribly much attention.  This morning, I recited some of the lyrics to my partner and said, "Do you think he's talking about Midnight Cowboy ?" My partner had, unsurprisingly, never heard Riptide. I honestly don't know where he's been for the past 40 years, because he doesn't seem to be familiar with any music that was created after 1979. Anyway, I played my partner the lyric video (he was particularly amused by the line "I want to be your left hand man"), and when it mentioned the "movie that I think you'd like," he said that did sound like Midnight Cow...

A lot has changed since I first created this blog. Even more changes happened while the blog was on hiatus. Most notably, my partner was diagnosed with cancer. He is currently receiving treatments, the side effects of which make every day incredibly arduous. When you become a caregiver, everybody tells you that you have to take care of yourself first--the whole oxygen mask thing. Even my partner tells me I need to take care of myself first, particularly because I have chronic health conditions that make it almost impossible to function some days. It feels kind of ridiculous sometimes, the two of us trying to take care of each other when we're both sick. We need so much help, and right now we have nothing. All we've got is each other. Every time someone tells me to take care of myself first, I wonder how I'm supposed to do that when my partner's needs are so immediate and life-or-death. He is not a demanding person. I have been incredibly ill. Emergency room, IV fluids, diagnostic equipment, more meds.  I'm so sorry for taking off without letting you know what was going on, but there are times when it can't be helped. I've missed sharing music with you. I think in terms of posts I want to write, but for a while I couldn't come near my computer. Now I don't remember what I wanted to say. Figures, eh? This song came into my mind at a time when I truly believed I would never get better. Time and treatment didn't seem to make any difference. I was just so sick all the time. At this point, I don't know whether I'm "better" or whether the new medication I'm on is just keeping me stable. More medical appointments to come.  Meanwhile, various other portions of my life are falling apart. Not my relationship. That's strong. There are so many lines in here that got me: "Always was the one you thought would never marry" in particular.
