#SongoftheDay Mom's A Capricorn (Ben Katzman)

Image
I heard this guy being interviewed on an astrology podcast. He's made an album where every song corresponds to a different sign. This was the podcaster's favourite music video, so that's why we're listening to this particular number. My mom happens not to be a Capricorn.  She happens to be a Cancer.  A couple weeks ago, I watched about an hour of the Ask an Aquarius channel on youtube live-streaming tarot readings.  A young lad came on to say he's having trouble at home and should he leave?  When he said "My mom's a Cancer," everyone in chat was like ruuuuuun! I hope that kid's doing okay. It isn't my intention to poke fun at his troubles. From the sounds of it, his home life was not good. By the way, I have nothing against Cancers. My best friend is a Cancer. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Soul Bossa Nova (Quincy Jones)

I mentioned this piece when we listened to Dream Warriors' "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style," but it just showed up as a crossword clue and, even though I could easily sing the tune for my partner, I could not name it until we had a whole bunch of letters filled it.  Here we have the original, which you will probably recognize from Austin Powers. #SongoftheDay You Sexy Thing (Hot Chocolate)

Earth Day was last week. To commemorate the occasion, my partner and I went to a nearby park to pick up trash. Most of the garbage we came across was styrofoam take-out containers, beer bottles, and abandoned PPE, but there was one item that will live on in my mind for the rest of my days. You see, I grabbed a plastic bag that had been buried in tall grasses for so long it fell apart as I picked it up.  What fell out was the BIGGEST DILDO I HAVE EVER SEEN. Clearly, it had been abandoned. Poor dildo. Somebody paid good money for it.   The giant (realistic) dildo is now in the garbage.  If it was yours and you were coming back for it, I apologize.  Check nearby bins.  Maybe it's still there. #SongoftheDay 2 Legit 2 Quit (MC Hammer)

Image
In my dream last night, I was shopping at a Zellers that was closing down, but hardly anything was left and all I really wanted to buy were my own homemade baked goods, which I didn't have to pay for because I made them. I might have bought a pair of socks for my partner--or I might have stolen them?--and then my cousin picked me up in her car.  She was there to drive me to a family gathering.  She was excited because she'd transferred her old music collection from tapes or CDs into mp3s, which she played for me. This is the song she had on while we drove. I miss my cousins.  I never see them outside family gatherings, and we haven't had any family gatherings lately because of Covid, so I haven't seen my cousins since December 2019.  In that time, their children have grown from little kids to big kids.  The next time I see them, I wonder if they'll know who I am. On my dresser, I have an acorn and a little toy frog.  These are objects the children shoved in my pock

I went for a walk yesterday and heard somebody playing a trumpet.  Took a while for me to get visuals on this person, as he'd distanced himself far away from everyone else, but I'll tell you this much: trumpet tones carry far and wide. (I should know--I played the trumpet in grade school!) #SongoftheDay Ravel's Jeux d'eau, arr. Teo Charmaine (Harp Quartet)

Image
One of my favourite CDs, when I was in my late teens, was all Ravel.  Jeux d'eau was on there, but as piano music.  I just heard it on the radio played by Angel Hewitt, which is what brought me to YouTube. I knew I wanted to make it our song of the day.  As much as I love the original piano composition, I changed my mind about what I would bring you when I found this magical arrangement performed by Katryna Tan, Teo Charmaine, Charity Kiew, and Loh Jia Hui.  Truly gorgeous.   If your day needs a little relaxation, here it is.  I challenge you to be stressed while listening to this piece.  (Not really--I don't want you to be stressed. I care about you way too much.) If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Dream a Little Dream of Me (Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong)

Image
When my partner was put on hold the other day, this was the hold music that came on. I said, half joking, "Shall we dance?"  He swept me into his arms and danced me around the kitchen.  I'm terrible at dancing (I never learned how), so I asked him to teach me properly. Should I keep my eyes closed and feel what his body was doing or looking down at his feet? He told me not to look at his feet.  He told me to take note of how his hand was applying pressure on my back.  That would indicate what his next move would be and how I should follow. This romance stuff is a whole new world. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Foyle's War Main Title Theme (Jim Parker)

Image
Since we're on a roll with TV-related music, I thought I'd mention another show we've been watching lately. Foyle's War has been one of my favourite shows since its inception. I was so glad when I played an episode for my partner and he was instantly enamoured. As much as I like it, I think it's possible that he enjoys it even more. He's not usually into murder mysteries, but the WWII element appeals him and the engaging relationship between Sam and Foyle seals it. We're listening to the theme music because I'm slightly obsessed with it.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay All Things Bright and Beautiful (Singapore Symphony Children's Choir)

Image
We listened to a theme from a TV show yesterday. Today's song is also TV-inspired. My partner and I watched the first season of the new All Creatures Great and Small series on PBS, and we loved it.  He has a connection to the show in that his parents enjoyed the books as well as the series that was made in the... 90s? 80s? 70s?  I forget when.  I never watched it. This song always reminds me of my partner, because he is so good at seeing beauty in the world. It's really impressive.  I did an online course in mindfulness last year, and so much of it was trying to learn all this stuff that comes naturally to my partner. Even if he's in a sour mood, even if we're in the middle of a disagreement, he will undoubtedly spot a flower or a sunset or a tree or a bird or SOMETHING he finds beautiful, and he'll point it out to me. That is an incredible ability.  I miss all these things.  I don't see them until he points them out. I chose John Rutter's arrangement becau

#SongoftheDay Detectorists Theme Song (Johnny Flynn)

Image
I've watched the TV series Detectorists three times over, and now I'm sharing it with my partner.  It always pleases me when he likes a show I like.  Every time an episode comes on I say, "I love this theme song."  The other night we watched an episode and my partner admitted that, when he'd had trouble sleeping the night before, he started singing this song to himself, in his head, as a lullaby. Isn't that lovely? If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Psalm 104 as sung at Prince Philip's Funeral Service

My partner and I were deeply moved by the choir of four that sang during Prince Philip's funeral service on Saturday.  Choral music is perhaps my favourite genre of music--hard to say, when I appreciate so many musical styles.  Anyway, this is beautiful, so let's listen.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Don't Worry Be Happy (Bobby McFerrin)

Image
When I was a kid, I bought a bag of worry dolls at the Canadian National Exhibition. The theory is you put these tiny dolls under your pillow at night, and they take away your worries.  Throughout my childhood and teenage years, I slept with them under my pillow every night. A couple weeks ago, I was cleaning out the broom closet at my apartment. On the shelf in there, I found a little wooden box I didn't recognize.  The box contained worry dolls, but not the ones from my childhood. Different worry dolls, along with a little instruction sheet specifying that they were Guatemalan worry dolls.  I don't remember ever seeing this little wooden box before, but one of my sisters has spent a lot of time in Guatemala, so I'm assuming she gave it to me?  I don't know.  I have no memory of this. My partner's got a lot of stress, so when I was assembling a gift bag of odds and ends to give him for his birthday, I put the worry dolls in there.  He'd never heard of such thin

#SongoftheDay April Showers (Judy Garland)

Image
I never actually knew when my parents got married until... today, actually. Turns out my parents' wedding anniversary is the same day as the anniversary of my partner's divorce. Isn't that weird?  That's got to mean something. I don't know what, but something. This song makes me think of that Treehouse of Horrors episode of The Simpsons where Homer is fixing the toaster and keeps going back in time, each time changing the present he returns to. When he arrives in a timeline where the family is rich and everything's perfect, he leaves because there aren't any donuts. Then Marge says, "Oh look, kids, it's raining" and, of course, it's raining donuts. #SongoftheDay Hope (Arlo Parks)

I met my best friend when we were in high school. After 25 years of friendship, I pretty much know what to expect from her.  I know that she'll retreat when she needs help the most.  She lives with a lot of serious illnesses and spends a lot of time in the hospital.  I've come to understand that, if she's sick, I won't hear from her. I'll ask how she's doing, but she won't answer until she's home again. I worry about her a lot, because she's often so ill doctors don't think she'll make it.  She is one of the most determined people I know. Just staying alive is a major challenge for her, but she does it. It's been twenty years since we've lived in the same city, so we don't get to spend much time together. I miss hanging out, like we did in high school. We used to bake cookies together.  She's an amazing baker.  She's good at everything she tries, but not in a way that makes you jealous. At least, I don't get jealous. M

#SongoftheDay Mystery Science Theater 3000 Theme (Joel and the Joels)

Image
It's two in the morning as I write this, and I'm watching old episodes of MST3k. I've spent hundreds (possibly thousands?) of hours of my life watching old episodes of MST3k. There was a time when I watched them all night long, until around 5 in the morning, when I would finally go to bed. I was extremely depressed, and they kept me alive. Alive, and laughing. A friend of mine makes films about her experience living with bipolar disorder. Last time I talked to her, she mentioned how hugely funny she finds things when she's inside a manic episode. When I've been at my most depressed, I've valued nothing higher than laughter. MST3k is where I found it most reliably. (I'm partial to the Joel episodes.) I've mentioned before that this show has saved my life. That's no exaggeration.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. Tell anyone you

#SongoftheDay Walk On By (Dionne Warwick)

Image
My partner's best friend hates me. She barely knows me, but she hates me. I think we exchanged maybe three words 25 years ago, but apparently that was enough for her to go on. You'd think I'd be insulted, but I'm really not. When someone makes a snap judgement like that, it says way more about them than it does about you. She views me as a cardboard cut-out, a cliche, a stereotype. That's fine. I know I'm not the person she wants me to be, so I just keep my distance. My partner often warns me she has a viperous tongue when she doesn't like someone. I don't have the energy for that. She can insult me behind my back. I'm used to that sort of thing. If it happens behind my back, at least I don't need to react to it. I actually have nothing against her. She's quirky and creative and she's great at putting ideas into action. Plus, she's a great sounding board for my partner--even if she does think that being in a relationship with me is a

#SongoftheDay Bride (San Fermin)

Image
Yesterday my partner again brought up the topic of buying a house. He doesn't have the money to buy a house and I don't have the money to buy a house, but even just the thought of giving up my independence in any way makes me so scared I can't cope. When things go too well in a relationship, I want to run away. I'm not going to run away, but the feelings are there. The fear is there. I opened YouTube to grab this song, and one of the first videos suggested for me was about people (like me) with childhood PTSD fleeing relationships, or starting arguments to drive a good person away. It really sucks how shit that happens in your childhood keeps a hold on you, even when you do your best to work through it. Early trauma shapes how your life turns out in such a drastic way. Oftentimes I've mentioned that I don't even know if I have my own personality. Am I anything more than just my trauma? My reactions are so predictable. Or... unpredictable. I'm unreasonable.

#SongoftheDay You Think You're A Man (Divine)

Image
I'm on a bit of a Divine kick, these days. The last time we featured Divine here on the blog, you'll recall me saying how much I enjoyed being alive in the 90s. Well, I also enjoyed being alive in the 80s. Big-time. Actually, you know what?  Speaking as someone who is genderqueer, the 80s was a pretty great time to grow up. I can only speak to my own experience, of course, but I wasn't pushed very hard to be feminine. I wore corduroy pants and plaid shirts when I was young. Lots of people thought I was a boy, according to my mother. I don't remember that. I just remember being able to wear whichever hand-me-downs I wanted and play in the mud and catch frogs. When my partner hears me waxing nostalgic about childhood, he's always surprised. He assumes that, because I have childhood trauma, the first 18 years of my life was an uninterrupted hellscape. That's not at all the case. I had lots of happy moments and I had lots of misery.  Sometimes I was even bored.   I

#SongoftheDay I'm Kissing You (Des'Ree)

I've got the stress and the second-hand stress.   April is the month when I get my extremely complicated tax stuff together for my accountant. It's also the month when I've got a lot of other paperwork to submit for my writing business. As I write this post, I'm sitting on my bed, in the one tiny corner of the mattress that isn't covered in tax forms.  I slept on the couch, last night.  Well, "slept" is an overstatement. I was in and out until 3:30. From then on, I was wide awake, staring at the ceiling. I didn't let myself get up until just before 6, and by then I was more than ready. My partner is also stressed by paperworks, some of which is incredibly emotional. Funny how paperwork can be emotional, but it can. He hasn't been sleeping either, and that's where my second-hand stress comes in.  All this to say I've got three cold sores at the moment. Remember a few weeks ago when I had five?   So I'm not kissing anybody. This song pop

#SongoftheDay Hands (Jewel)

This song came into my head today, as I was staring at my hands. I'm not high, I'm just mystified: how can my hands look so old?  They are SO WRINKLY.  Why? When did this happen? We're going back to the 90s with a Jewel track, today. My partner still loves this song--the "only kindness matters" part. Kindness is his thing. #SongoftheDay Easter Parade (Judy Garland and Fred Astaire)

Image
Until Covid came along, I never understood why some people celebrate the hell out of holidays. Of course, different people have different reasons for celebrating--religious observances obviously hold more weight if you're actually religious--but now that there's so little to do and look forward to (aside from the pleasures of work and waking up beside someone I adore), celebrating anything appeals to me greatly. I won't even tell you how much money I spent on chocolate. My partner tells me that, when he was growing up, Easter was a big deal. Everyone in his family got all new clothes for Easter.  Springtime. New beginnings.  I, too, received new clothes at Easter: my Welsh grandmother always bought my sister and I matching dresses and, yes, an Easter bonnet.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. I went to YouTube in hopes of stumbling upon a song to include in today's post, and instead I spent way too much time watching videos of people preparing egg dishes. Maybe that makes sense--Easter and all.   This year feels much like last year, in terms of not seeing family at the holidays.  Last Easter was the first holiday where Covid prevented us from seeing each other. In the same way that every day feels like Groundhog Day, the deja vu nature of this weekend makes it feel like Groundhog Easter. #SongoftheDay Felix Mendelssohn's Lift Thine Eyes (The Choristers of Canterbury Cathedral)

Image
When I was in a choir, as a child, we participated in a production of the oratorio Elijah. This is the song we sang. It popped into my head today, so I figured it must have something to do with Easter.  I know absolutely nothing about the bible, but my partner was raised in a religious household, so I asked him: Does Elijah have anything to do with Easter? He very politely answered that no, it did not. He didn't laugh at me and tell me that Elijah is from the Old Testament, before Jesus enters into the picture. I did manage to piece that together on my own. So here is a non-Easter song that I'm pretending is an Easter song just because I like it. #SongoftheDay Talkin' Softball (Terry Cashman)

Image
This parody song from The Simpsons popped into my head today while I was cutting my partner's hair.   The lighting isn't great in here (despite there being probably a thousand lightbulbs in the living room/dining room/kitchen area), so I wasn't sure if I was clipping off too much sideburns. If you're an Old School Simpsons fan, you know why that made me think of this old softball episode. I don't have whatever season it's from on DVD (I think I have seasons 5, 6, 7, 8?), so I probably haven't seen this episode in 20 years... but I remember it well. And, of course, this song brings to mind a joke from Frasier, because I obviously still live in the 90s (remember when 10-11pm was the Seinfeld/Frasier hour on Fox29?), and it's this: Frasier asks his dad to name a baseball player and Martin says, "Okay... Darryl Strawberry," and Frasier snaps, "No, a real one!" Haha.  If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and
