 I never actually knew when my parents got married until... today, actually. Turns out my parents' wedding anniversary is the same day as the anniversary of my partner's divorce. Isn't that weird?  That's got to mean something. I don't know what, but something.

This song makes me think of that Treehouse of Horrors episode of The Simpsons where Homer is fixing the toaster and keeps going back in time, each time changing the present he returns to. When he arrives in a timeline where the family is rich and everything's perfect, he leaves because there aren't any donuts. Then Marge says, "Oh look, kids, it's raining" and, of course, it's raining donuts.

Last winter, I listened to this Death Cab for Cutie album ( Thank You for Today ) on repeat. I'd probably heard it 20 or 30 times before I clued in to the fact that it was a break-up album, and maybe I was listening to it so much because, last fall, I went through a break-up and never really dealt with it. If you've known me for a while, you've heard me talk about my girlfriend, Sweet. What you don't know is that she isn't my girlfriend anymore. We broke up while my grandmother was dying, which is a stupid time to break up with someone, but the relationship had run its course, we were in very different places emotionally, and it was time to say goodbye. I'm in pain and seeking out the coziest of cozies. Hetty Wainthropp is way up there. I'm in bed with BritBox, hoping I'll come across an episode I missed on TV, but I'm pretty sure I've seen them all. Rewatching the later ones anyway. No reason not to. I was such a fan of Keeping Up Appearances, and Hetty Wainthropp felt like an odd continuation of that show--like, if Hyacinth were actually nice to Richard, and they took in a stray teenager and opened a detective agency?  It's basically the same show, if you look at it that way. I was singing "Stacy's Mom" as a method of self-soothing (hey, it works) when I started to wonder: did the band Fountains of Wayne name themselves after Wayne Fontana? Turns out the answer is no. They named themselves after a garden centre. But did the garden centre name themselves after Wayne Fontana? Probably not. Another somewhat relevant question would be: how can I, as a fully-fledged queer person, embrace such a heterocentric tune? Well, I grew up with it. And, anyway, this song is from the 60s. #SongoftheDay Coffee (Sylvan Esso)

The last time I drank coffee, I spent the whole day throwing up.  It happened to be the same day I started taking a prescription medication that is known to cause nausea, so I put it down to that.  I almost never drink coffee anymore, because it makes my heart do weird things, but I had a few sips this morning and I've been sick as a dog ever since. I'm still on the same prescription medication, and I also take a number of supplements recommended by my doctor to help control symptoms of my chronic illness.  Nearly every medication and supplement I take is known to cause nausea, stomach cramps, and/of diarrhea. I've mentioned before that every day is a delicate balancing act of eating enough food (and the right kind of food) so I can take my meds and not spend the rest of the day feeling like I'm going to puke. For Easter, my partner gave me a chocolate bunny. But you know what else he gave me that's even better than chocolate? No, not that. Well, yes, that too, but that's not what I'm talking about. He bought me some of the supplements my doctor put me on. They're pretty expensive (to me--I don't know what qualifies as expensive to other people anymore) but once I started buying a better brand instead of store brand, I noticed a dramatic reduction in the frequency and severity of attacks (when my chronic illness flares up, it's called an "attack" in the literature--how's that for frightening?). So I'd been talking to my partner about how the better supplements really seem to be making a difference, but BOY are they ever pricy and, sure enough, he goes out and buys them for me as a gift. My chronic illness was sparked by the onset of menopause (thank you very much, hormonal changes) and yet my mother is constantly saying to me: "I don't understand why you're so sick all the time. You were such a healthy baby." Yeah, you'd think that would have carried me all the way through life. Weird. I was listening to a Paralympian talking about proving to the world how much we (people with disabilities) can do. Because I became disabled in adulthood (well, midlife), I find it's the opposite with me: I feel like I have to somehow prove that I can no longer do things I could very easily do earlier in life. And I hate that feeling. And, realistically, it's not "the world" I need to prove this to. It's certainly not my doctors--they have been wonderfully supportive. Yesterday I told you a story about being pushed around while walking with a cane. That was a bad day. But that bad day had one bright spot, thanks to a lady in red. On my way home to the doctor's office, I was entering the not-accessible subway station I mentioned to you yesterday . In addition to boarded-up elevators, this station has the heaviest doors I've ever encountered. Even on a good day, I find them hard to open. And, on a good day (even on a bad one, to be honest), I go out of my way to hold these doors for seniors. They are so, so difficult to open. Ahead of me, there was a beautiful Black woman wearing a stunning red dress. She noticed me. She noticed I was having difficulties. And she held the door for me. And that was the nicest thing anyone had done for me the whole wretched day. And it made so happy I smiled and I said, "Thank you so much!" I have been incredibly ill. Emergency room, IV fluids, diagnostic equipment, more meds.  I'm so sorry for taking off without letting you know what was going on, but there are times when it can't be helped. I've missed sharing music with you. I think in terms of posts I want to write, but for a while I couldn't come near my computer. Now I don't remember what I wanted to say. Figures, eh? This song came into my mind at a time when I truly believed I would never get better. Time and treatment didn't seem to make any difference. I was just so sick all the time. At this point, I don't know whether I'm "better" or whether the new medication I'm on is just keeping me stable.
