#SongoftheDay Pass the Dutchie (Musical Youth)

Image
After the concert I mentioned yesterday, I popped into Tim Hortons for a coffee and an apple fritter to eat on the subway. I was telling my partner that I'd started buying apple fritters instead of other more preferable donuts because they're always the biggest. I just want to cram as much white flour as possible down my gullet. As we rode the subway, we talked about donuts. My author blog is called Donuts and Desires --clearly, I'm a big fan. Funny how we could both name the favourite donut of each of our family members, growing up. My father's favourite was a donut with raisins, a donut called a Dutchie. So here we have a song about donuts. ;-) If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay Wie Du warst! (Wallis Giunta)

Image
My partner has a huge crush on this opera singer--and it's not hard to see why. He calls her his "younger woman," which I find delightful despite the fact that I'm in the middle of a hardcore midlife crisis. Anyway, it's good to have shared interests. We have a shared interest in redheads. My partner bought us tickets for a concert Wallis Giunta gave last week (her name keeps autocorrecting to "Wallis Giant" lol), and it was a lovely afternoon out. In fact, I left feeling not old at all because, aside from the singer herself, I'm pretty sure I was the youngest person in that concert hall. By, like... thirty years? #SongoftheDay Where'er You Walk (Kathleen Battle)

Image
Yesterday I told you about the song my father used to sing at my mom (it wasn't pretty). Well, I shared this anecdote with my partner, and he shared this Handel aria with me: it's the song his father used to sing to his mother. It's a lot nicer that "get an ugly girl to marry you." Where'er you walk Where'er you walk Cool gales shall fan the glade Trees where you sit shall crowd into a shade Trees where you sit shall crowd into a shade Where'er you tread the blushing flowers shall rise and all things flourish and all things flourish Where'er you turn your eyes If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay If You Wanna Be Happy (Jimmy Soul)

Image
Last week, my partner cooked me a lovely meal and then, after we'd finished washing the dishes, he swept me into his arms and danced me around the kitchen. It was a moment I'll never forget, because that's how I've always imagined happy couples behaving behind closed doors: dancing together in their kitchens. Romantic domesticity. Being sweet with each other.  Savouring that person's company. As we danced in the kitchen, I though to myself: if I could show Little Kid Me any moment from the life of Grown-Up Me, it would be this one. I'd want that kid to realize respectful, collaborative romantic love does exist, and that we're worthy of it. The love I grew up witnessing between my parents? It was moments like my father singing this song at my mother, and my mother covering her mouth with her hand, feeling ashamed about her crooked teeth. We all deserve love.  We all deserve respectful partners.  We're all worthy of that much. If you're wo

#SongoftheDay Le Tango Du Qui (Olivia Ruiz)

Image
After singing my brother's praises yesterday, I'm playing my "French circus music" for you today. Okay, so I went through a big Olivia Ruiz phase. It happens. I get the sense that her target demographic was more in the preteen to teenage range at the time, whereas I was well into my twenties, but you know what? I own my likes. I was big-time into her music. One time I was playing a mix tape (well, mix CD) at a family gathering. When this song came on, my brother was like, "Oh great, it's more of Giselle's French circus music." I couldn't even be insulted, because what else would you even call this song? It absolutely is French circus music and I still love it all these years later. (In fact, this song inspired me to write my book A Little Burlesque !) #SongoftheDay Love is in Town (Brenda Boykin)

Image
It's my brother's birthday, so I wanted to play the kind of music he likes. The only problem was that I didn't know what kind of music that would be. So I asked. And his answer didn't help me much, because I'd never heard of the genre or artists he favours. Fortunately, my investigation of my brother's music led me into one of my famous rabbit holes, and I've emerged with this track. Turns out the kid's got taste. I guess he's not a kid, though.  Hard not to think of my youngest siblings as kids, even though my brother's got an impressive streak of grey hair--much more than I have, in fact--and he's spent much of this past year visiting the cardiologist. Yeah... he's not a kid at all.  He's an adult, a full-grown man. And, I would never say this to his face, because we're not a touchy-feely family, but I'll admit it to you: my brother is by far one of the best men out there. He's kind, caring, and generous to a f

#SongoftheDay The Dream (Fawn Wood and Dallas Waskahat)

Image
Well, see, my plan for the evening was to watch another Murder She Wrote rerun on "the old people network," as my partner calls it, but I figured I'd check on Twitter real quick (what would it do without me?), and one of the beaders I follow had just tweeted a Fawn Wood track. Needless to say, I fell down a bit of a rabbit hole, and here we are. I missed Murder She Wrote, but I listened to a fuckton of Fawn, and now we have this post. #SongoftheDay I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Whitney Houston)

Image
I'm currently reading a stellar piece of fiction called Scarborough . It's a novel by Catherine Hernandez , and it's set in the neighbourhood where I grew up. The story is told from multiple viewpoints, many of which are the perspectives of schoolchildren. Toward the end of he book, one of these children performs this song at a talent show. It's a very moving moment. This music video, on the other hand, is hilarious. I don't remember it being comedic. Same thing happened when I went back and watched Olivia Newton-John's video for Physical . You'd think these songs would have hot, sweaty music videos, but nope. Funny ones. Anyway, after you're done watching this video, treat yourself to a copy of Scarborough . Tell them Giselle sent you. They'll ask "Who is Giselle?" and you'll get all embarrassed and be like "Uhhh... never mind," but you'll end up with a great book. If you're wondering how you can support me

#SongoftheDay Such Great Heights (Postmodern Jukebox ft. Kiah Victoria)

Image
I'm sitting on my couch on a Saturday morning, listening to the radio and browsing grocery flyers online. I have no idea what to make for dinner. That's all I think about, these days: dinner, dinner, dinner. The Iron and Wine cover of this song , Such Great Heights, just came on the radio. Because it's so slowed down, I actually listened to the lyrics for the first time: I am thinking it's a sign That the freckles in our eyes Are mirror images And when we kiss they're perfectly aligned These lyrics caught me off-guard, because just the other day I noticed that my partner and I have something similar going on... except we've got mirror image age spots. We really do: mine on my right cheek, his on his left. He's older, so his are more advanced, but mine are making an impression around town. (Someone born in 1995 told me my face has "character"--HA! But also... Thank You!) If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you so

#SongoftheDay Je suis partie (Anik Jean)

I feel like this song should be some kind of queer anthem. I feel like a lot of queer people can relate to the story and sentiment of walking away from family. Although, funny enough, my own family was much more friendly toward me when I was in a longterm relationship with a trans woman than they are now that I'm getting serious with a man. Funny. I've got a little family gathering coming up this weekend, and I can guarantee it's going to be uncomfortable. This would be a great opportunity for my family to get to know the man I want to marry, but that's not going to happen.  He's not invited. Big surprise, right?  Sweet was never invited to family activities. Sometimes I would force the issue and bring her along, but the last time I recall doing that, my mom dropped out. Rude. Gotta hand it to one of my sisters, though: she did all kinds of stuff with me and Sweet.  She was good, that way.  Plus, she doesn't make friends easily, so I guess it's goo

#SongoftheDay Twilight Time (The Platters)

Image
Yesterday, after talking about Mamie Van Doren in Untamed Youth, I went back and investigated the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode I thought I was thinking of, and realized I'd mixed it up with Girls Town --both of which are Mamie Van Doren movies, but Girls Town is infinitely more entertaining. Sort of. Well, it's got some performances that really stick in your mind. First off, a very young Paul Anka appears in the film, as does a very old-looking young Mel Tormé. Paul Anka sings. Mel Tormé... doesn't. But you know who else sings in this movie? The Platters ! Even acerbic Mike and the bots have nothing bad to say about this group. #SongoftheDay Hey Mama (Mamie Van Doren)

Image
Yesterday we listened to the Rough Trade song High School Confidential, so it's only natural that we feature Mamie Van Doren today. Two reasons: 1. Mamie Van Doren is mentioned in the song High School Confidential; 2. Mamie Van Doren appears in the film High School Confidential . Mamie Van Doren was only a name, to me, until I spent an extended depressive period watching old episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 . Joel and the bots riff on her film called Untamed Youth --which is possibly where this song/clip originates? I'm not entirely sure. If so, I'm almost 100% positive it didn't appear in the MST3k version . I'd have remembered a song this bad and a Mamie this naked. Imagine me as a little queer teen--diminutive in size, but often lectured for being "too loud"--sitting in English class. I'm in my final year of high school.  My teacher is leading a discussion about a tongue-in-cheek Margaret Wente article called "I Want a Wife." The article is supposed to be funny because she can't have a wife--she's a lady. Men are so lucky because they have these live-in cooks/maids/accountants called wives. If only ladies like Margaret Wente could have wives too, haha!  Wouldn't life be joyous? I remember feeling irritated and frustrated and confounded for reasons I couldn't yet articulate. Friends was the most popular show in TV, and there'd already been a lesbian wedding in one episode. Was the author of this article not aware that lesbians were a thing? That women could have wives--perhaps not legally, but at least in spirit? Because the basic premise of her article was that they couldn't.  If she took lesbi

#SongoftheDay Sakomawit (Jeremy Dutcher)

Image
I'm trying to remember everything I learned about Jeremy Dutcher from an interview I listened to months ago, but my memory's not the greatest.  He's a classically-trained two-spirit musician (opera singer, I want to say, definitely pianist...) who incorporates ancestral archival tracks into the contemporary music he creates. You'll hear how he's expertly woven traditional and modern sound. His music is beautifully addictive. Look him up. Get hooked. #SongoftheDay Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! (Bing Crosby)

Image
I know, I know--a Christmas song in November. Don't throw things! The reason I'm posting this one today is that it's snowing like a mother out there. This ain't no sweet November snowfall. This is the genuine article. You know what?  I love snow.  Probably because I don't drive and I don't have to commute anywhere. I get to stay at home and look out the window as the world turns white. I'm writing this in the evening, to post in the morning. My partner was here earlier.  After a warming bowl of homemade carrot soup, I walked him to his car.  It wasn't even 8:30 at night, but it felt like 1 in the morning because no one was on the road.  He'd parked about a 5-minute walk from my building. Those 5 little minutes together mean more to me than I can say--I think because he appreciates all the little things I do for him that would be considered chivalrous if I were a man. Before I started walking him to his car, nobody had ever walked him to a car bef

#SongoftheDay Let Your Backbone Slide (Maestro Fresh Wes)

Image
In the early 90s, my cousin and I tried very hard to dance like the Fly Girls from In Living Color .  We failed spectacularly, but we really put in the effort. This was a go-to song, for us.  It wasn't just the running man we were trying to master. There was this move we'd do that involved two people: she'd grab my right hand with her right hand, and we'd both lean back until we were low to the ground, actually touching the floor with our left hands. Then we'd bop up just enough to switch hands--holding left hands, right hands on the floor.  The switch-up was rapid-fire, swift repetition.  It went on until our palms grew so sweaty we slipped out of each other's grip and fell on our butts, laughing. Maestro Fresh Wes showed up again in my life in the early 2000s, when he appeared as an actor in a soapy, sexy late-night TV show called Metropia.  I watched every episode of that show a million times, because the cast was refreshingly diverse and there was SO MUC

#SongoftheDay Piece of My Heart (Erma Franklin)

Image
I know it's Tuesday when you're reading this (or potentially some other day, but this post is going up on a Tuesday), but I'm writing to you on a Saturday night. Remember a few short weeks ago , when I told you my Saturday night song was t hat perfect Sam Cooke track, Another Saturday Night ? Well, now I do have somebody and it feels damn good.  My mother and I are on the outs because she hates him (she hates all my friends--this causes significant friction), but I'm the happiest I've been in decades. At the moment, I'm sitting on the chair in my living room (writing this post), my partner is lying on the couch (reading the paper with a cat at his feet), and this song is playing on the radio. Life doesn't get much more perfect than this. If you're wondering how you can support me in bringing you songs and visits every day, the easiest thing you can do is tell your friends about the site. #SongoftheDay I Talk to the Trees (Robert Goulet)

Image
I'm pretty sure I told you Beetlejuice was my favourite movie when I was a kid. I can't remember if I also mentioned that my partner saw Beetlejuice for the first time just a couple weeks ago. His favourite thing about the whole movie was that Robert Goulet was in it. As for this song in particular, it was featured in the book of sheet music from musicals of the 1950s I had as a teen. I used to play it on the piano all the time. Now I can't play piano at all--I've forgotten how. Plus, my voice is shot, so I can't even sing it particularly well. Dude, aging sucks so hard. (p.s. My favourite Robert Goulet line is from The Simpsons: "Vera said that?!") (p.p.s. Can you believe how young he is on this album cover?) #SongoftheDay Really Wanna Let You Down (Monowhales)

Image
This song has been on the radio a lot lately, and every time I hear it, the same scene replays in my head: I'm at my partner's place and he's just come home from the library.  He takes off his coat and hat and gloves and boots and sits in a chair and puts his feet up.  I've been sitting on the floor, because it's warmest near the fireplace, but as soon as I see his feet, I need to touch them. So I do. I get close and I massage his feet--something I don't think I've ever done. He says, "I've always wanted a foot massage--a professional one, I mean, though the amateur version is very good." The book Memoirs of a Geisha pops into my head, and I tell him so. He says, "Talk about cultural appropriation!" So we do. This song is playing on the radio. I've heard it before, but I hear it differently when I notice my partner glancing at the radio, like he'll be able to see the song more clearly. I feel slightly anxious. I

#SongoftheDay The Loco-Motion (Little Eva)

Image
Another song of my childhood. This tune was repopularized in the 80s when Kylie Minogue released a cover of it, and yet the original 60s version is the one I remember best. I remember dancing to this song in the school gym, which doubled as the school auditorium, so I can't remember if we performed it as a folk dancing number, or danced to it in gym class, or if it was part of a Dancing Through The Decades presentation we performed for parents. (My mom was so embarrassed because, for the 70s number, I'd swiped an outfit from her closet--that had been given to her by a friend, who also had kids at the school, who happened to at the presentation...) All I know is there was a lot of loco-motion in my childhood. #SongoftheDay Let's Dance (Chris Montez)

Image
Left to my own devices any given evening, I'm pretty much guaranteed to wander toward the nearest Shoppers Drug Mart.  For non-Canadians, that's a drug store. They sell food, too. Mostly, I go there because it's open until midnight and I like to wander. So last night, on my way to Shoppers, I walked past an Irish pub and it was BLASTING this song. I found this to be noteworthy mostly because I've been walking past this pub for 15 years and I've never heard them blasting any music. I've eaten there a few times, and I don't even remember it being loud. With chatter, yes, because it's a busy place, but not with music. It's certainly not a place you'd go to dance. The song stuck in my head because I couldn't remember the last time I'd heard it.  Probably childhood. You get to hear so much of my childhood soundtrack. Lucky you. #SongoftheDay Constant Craving (k.d. lang)

One more concert memory: Sweet and I saw k.d. lang at Luminato in 2011 . It was our first concert together, and felt like a lesbian rite of passage. She wasn't pleased about sitting on the ground, even though I'd brought a blanket, but she did it for my sake. And, for real, it was lesbians as far as the eye could see.  A sea of lesbians. Good concert. (btw can you believe this song was released in 1992? feel old yet? because I do!) #SongoftheDay Going To A Town (Rufus Wainwright)

Image
While we're discussing Luminato concerts I was lucky enough to attend for free, let's add Rufus Wainwright to the list. I think I remember this concert so well because I came home and immediately wrote a blog post about it. Writing about the events of my life does tend to cement them in my memory. The only trouble is that, being a fiction writer, I most often fictionalize those life events... and then I can't remember what really happened. It gets messy. Anyway, I specifically remember Rufus restarting this song three times in concert, because he kept forgetting the words. #SongoftheDay You Got To Run (Buffy Sainte-Marie & Tanya Tagaq)

Image
Yesterday I told you about the photos I found on my camera of concerts I have only vague memories of attending. Well, there are pictures of Buffy Sainte-Marie and Tanya Tagaq on there, but trust me: those are concerts I couldn't forget it I tried. And I'm not likely to try. I've mentioned before that I love Tagaq and I've seen her live on multiple occasions. On this particular occasion, I saw Buffy Sainte-Marie and Tagaq back-to-back during Luminato. #SongoftheDay Penelope's Song (Loreena McKennitt)

Image
I never use my digital camera anymore. When I found it tossed in a box, I couldn't resist looking through the old photos. It was a walk down memory lane. I guess I shouldn't say "old" photos, because it's not like they're from the 1930s or anything.  They're photos over the past decade. But what struck me most, in looking at these pictures, is how many were taken during concerts. The most disconcerting part is that I don't even remember attending some of these concerts. I have photos of Loreena McKennitt playing a harp during Luminato. If you'd asked me 3 days ago if I'd ever seen Loreena McKennitt in concert, I'd have said no. And yet, there in my camera, I have evidence to the contrary. #SongoftheDay Prince Johnny (St. Vincent)

Image
Yesterday we had a song called Vincent. Today we have a song by St. Vincent. I saw St. Vincent live at NXNE in 2014. She was touring her Rattlesnake album , which I owned and was intimately familiar with by the time I saw her in concert. My memory is failing me badly right now, but there was one song she performed that blew me away. On the album, it was an okay song. Live, it was an AMAZING song. I spent last night watching a bunch of concert clips, trying to figure out which song I was so impressed by, but I just don't know. If I don't write things down, they're lost.  Which is one of the positives about keeping this music blog. It's not just about music--it's about my life. And if I don't write it down, I'll never remember. So let's try Prince Johnny. WARNING: There is strobing in this video somewhere after the 5 minute mark. #SongoftheDay Vincent (Don McLean)

Yesterday's post was To Be Continued, although I didn't tell you at the time. We listened to Roberta Flack's Killing Me Softly With His Song yesterday, as you'll recall. I mentioned asking my partner who the song was about. He knew right away: Don McLean. But that's not where the story ends. He dug his iPod out of his bag and pulled up this song, which I'd always thought of Starry, Starry Night. Nope. It's called Vincent. Because it's about Vincent Van Gogh. Which, I guess, is kind of obvious if you actually listen to the words. I don't always listen to the words. I don't always listen. But I'm trying. Getting better all the time. Sometimes songs pop into my head out of nowhere. Sometimes I just start singing to myself without even realizing it. The other day, my partner and I were making toasted tomato sandwiches for lunch, and I realized I was singing this song. I seemed to recall someone once telling me it was written about another singer, but I couldn't remember who. So I asked my partner, "Do you know who this song is about?" And he said, "Don McLean." Not even a pause for reflection. He knew right away. And he was right (I looked it up).
