#SongoftheDay Such Great Heights (Postmodern Jukebox ft. Kiah Victoria)

I'm sitting on my couch on a Saturday morning, listening to the radio and browsing grocery flyers online. I have no idea what to make for dinner. That's all I think about, these days: dinner, dinner, dinner.

The Iron and Wine cover of this song, Such Great Heights, just came on the radio. Because it's so slowed down, I actually listened to the lyrics for the first time:

I am thinking it's a sign
That the freckles in our eyes
Are mirror images
And when we kiss they're perfectly aligned

These lyrics caught me off-guard, because just the other day I noticed that my partner and I have something similar going on... except we've got mirror image age spots. We really do: mine on my right cheek, his on his left. He's older, so his are more advanced, but mine are making an impression around town. (Someone born in 1995 told me my face has "character"--HA! But also... Thank You!)

#SongoftheDay Coffee (Sylvan Esso)

The last time I drank coffee, I spent the whole day throwing up.  It happened to be the same day I started taking a prescription medication that is known to cause nausea, so I put it down to that.  I almost never drink coffee anymore, because it makes my heart do weird things, but I had a few sips this morning and I've been sick as a dog ever since. I'm still on the same prescription medication, and I also take a number of supplements recommended by my doctor to help control symptoms of my chronic illness.  Nearly every medication and supplement I take is known to cause nausea, stomach cramps, and/of diarrhea. I've mentioned before that every day is a delicate balancing act of eating enough food (and the right kind of food) so I can take my meds and not spend the rest of the day feeling like I'm going to puke. My partner put in an offer on a condo in his hometown. Housing prices there are way cheaper than we're used to, but it means you're living in... well, I won't say where, but it wouldn't be my first choice. Anyway, a big part of the reason he wanted to move back to his hometown was so that he could spend more time with a friend he's known since they were babies. This friend is seriously ill. Moments after my partner put in the purchase offer, he got an email from the friend's wife. The friend has stopped eating and taking vital medications. He is likely to die in the coming days. There's so much I could write, in relation to this song, about caregiving and the worn-out feeling that comes with being needed too much and for too long.  I could write five thousand posts about times caregiving tasks have triggered a trauma response in me, because my busted limbic system is stuck in a time when I was neglected and parentified in childhood, when I couldn't be a proper kid because I had to take care of other people in a home that was not safe. But it's going to be exhausting, if I write all that, and I would much rather sit back and listen to this beautiful performance while rain and fall leaves pelt my window, and the sky looms ominous and grey over the neighbour's roofline.  I'd rather close my eyes for a while and disappear into this song. I'm in pain and seeking out the coziest of cozies. Hetty Wainthropp is way up there. I'm in bed with BritBox, hoping I'll come across an episode I missed on TV, but I'm pretty sure I've seen them all. Rewatching the later ones anyway. No reason not to. I was such a fan of Keeping Up Appearances, and Hetty Wainthropp felt like an odd continuation of that show--like, if Hyacinth were actually nice to Richard, and they took in a stray teenager and opened a detective agency?  It's basically the same show, if you look at it that way. Whether you were a child in the 90s or an adult who just happened to enjoy a quality animated series, you probably loved Pinky and the Brain as much as I did. Cartoons really spoke to me, when I was a kid. My household was plagued by domestic violence, and I swear there were times when cartoons saved me.  I had Strawberry Shortcake bedsheets and a Smurfs blanket, and when the world was crashing down outside my door (literally--there was a lot of crashing in my house), I would burrow under the covers and pretend I was in Cartoon World with all my favourite characters. I know that sounds like a bummer of a story, but take it as encouragement, especially if you're a creator like me. Sometimes, when the world is crashing down at our feet, writing erotica (or whatever it is you do--I don't know your life) just doesn't seem all that important. When my partner moved from his apartment in the city to a (small) house in a small town, he said it was because he didn't want to die listening to the woman upstairs snoring. Now he's bought this condo in a his hometown and a move seems imminent. I keep wondering how he's going to react to the other-people noises in this new building. My own apartment building is a concrete structure. This morning, I woke up to the sound of a sneeze. My partner isn't here with me. The sneeze came from another unit. I'm not even sure whether it was a human sneeze. I think it might have been a dog sneeze. He got away from the thing he wanted to get away from, and now he's going back to it. What's worse is that he's moving farther away from the place he wants to be (the city) because it's so massively expensive to live here. My chronic illness was sparked by the onset of menopause (thank you very much, hormonal changes) and yet my mother is constantly saying to me: "I don't understand why you're so sick all the time. You were such a healthy baby." Yeah, you'd think that would have carried me all the way through life. Weird. I was listening to a Paralympian talking about proving to the world how much we (people with disabilities) can do. Because I became disabled in adulthood (well, midlife), I find it's the opposite with me: I feel like I have to somehow prove that I can no longer do things I could very easily do earlier in life. And I hate that feeling. And, realistically, it's not "the world" I need to prove this to. It's certainly not my doctors--they have been wonderfully supportive. Last winter, I listened to this Death Cab for Cutie album ( Thank You for Today ) on repeat. I'd probably heard it 20 or 30 times before I clued in to the fact that it was a break-up album, and maybe I was listening to it so much because, last fall, I went through a break-up and never really dealt with it. If you've known me for a while, you've heard me talk about my girlfriend, Sweet. What you don't know is that she isn't my girlfriend anymore. We broke up while my grandmother was dying, which is a stupid time to break up with someone, but the relationship had run its course, we were in very different places emotionally, and it was time to say goodbye. A lot has changed since I first created this blog. Even more changes happened while the blog was on hiatus. Most notably, my partner was diagnosed with cancer. He is currently receiving treatments, the side effects of which make every day incredibly arduous. When you become a caregiver, everybody tells you that you have to take care of yourself first--the whole oxygen mask thing. Even my partner tells me I need to take care of myself first, particularly because I have chronic health conditions that make it almost impossible to function some days. It feels kind of ridiculous sometimes, the two of us trying to take care of each other when we're both sick. We need so much help, and right now we have nothing. All we've got is each other. Every time someone tells me to take care of myself first, I wonder how I'm supposed to do that when my partner's needs are so immediate and life-or-death. He is not a demanding person.
